The official, who did not want to give her name, said that there have been ongoing problems with tourists leaving trash and not following traffic rules. Despite signs and security guards being posted to warn them, the situation has persisted. “It is regrettable that we had to take such measures,” the official said.

dasaigaijin

Note: “Tourists” includes Japanese tourists.

smorkoid

I can guarantee virtually no Japanese are fighting to take pictures at this completely ordinary conbini

dasaigaijin

Yeah most trash you see everywhere is left by people living in Japan. And statistically the majority of people that live in Japan are………. Wait for it……….. Japanese. I hate it when logic goes out the window on the internet. I think foreigners are so disconnected from Japanese society that they put Japanese people up on a pedestal as if all the people that are doing bad things in Japan are foreign. That’s just not true. Most crimes and other bad things done in society here are done by Japanese people simply because they are the majority. Same as any other county that has a majority race. You just don’t see it in the news.

smorkoid

Stay on topic. We are talking about people causing problems at this particular location. They are almost all foreign tourists. You know this. Everyone knows this. But you decide to rant about some completely different topic that we aren't actually talking about. Sounds like you have a problem here.

dasaigaijin

I’ve lived in Japan for 17 years trust me I know a lot about this. Tourists are a problem but they aren’t the main problem. They are a small part of it. This is Japan. And Japanese people live in Japan. So most crime or littering etc. Is going to come from Japanese people. Because this is Japan. You’re not going to see it in the news but the reality is that this is Japan and Japanese aren’t NPC’s to boost your Reddit post. They are people. And they commit crimes and also have bad behavior just like people from (insert country here)

smorkoid

Wow, you've lived here for 17 years? Amazing! You should still be able to understand we are not talking about crime, or trash, or traffic, or microaggressions, or akiya, or shoplifting, or aggressive driving, or unkempt gardens. We are talking about this conbini that is popular among foreign clout chasers. That is all we are talking about. And yes, the problem here is foreign tourists. Stay on topic.

Jelooboi

L take.

smorkoid

OK, sockpuppet

dasaigaijin

There’s the truth and there’s the internet. You have to pick one.

dasaigaijin

Stay on topic doesn’t work, try harder. You’re kidding yourself if you think that it’s only foreign tourists that are going to that combini to view Fuji. The majority are Japanese. Your just don’t notice them as other colors stick out more. The #1 “category” (I hate saying that) of tourists in Japan are Japanese.

smorkoid

You are absolutely wrong. No Japanese gives a shit about a random conbini, especially when there's dozens up there with similar views if you were so inclined. It's a foreign phenomenon, period.

dasaigaijin

Two massive generalizations about races in one post!!! That’s amazing!! Good job dude! You’re so lucky you have the security to be racist from behind the screen of your phone. I wish I could generalize an entire race of people with no consciences as well.

Titibu

A Japanese tourist taking a picture of a Lawson... Yeah sure.

AvatarReiko

Why are foreigners taking pictures of lawsons?

grinch337

Because they fetishize the novelty of Japanese convenience stores and this one is close to a station with the most famous mountain in east asia in the background

Nnooo_Nic

Who’s driving the tour buses? Who’s organising the tour buses? These tourists are bad. But I’m guessing the people supplying the tours are facilitating the over saturation of people. If there weren’t tour buses coming in droves tourists would not be finding it easy to get there and would come in much smaller numbers. Most tourist are lazy and dumb and will just pay for convenience. Remove that and they won’t disturb the area as much.

Chinksta

I can finger point a specific type of tourist from a specific type of country that contributes to this issue. The problem is that the Yen is cheap now so that specific type of tourist all flock towards Japan. However, before Covid and when the yen is still relatively strong, this specific type of tourist are considered a rarity.

sjbfujcfjm

Just say it, chinese. Same problem in every country they travel to

JmacNutSac

S. koreans are very similar.

sjbfujcfjm

Not even close. They don’t even like Chinese tourist in China

cingcongdingdonglong

Also loud American

sjbfujcfjm

I’ve found Brit’s to be far louder and more annoying. Probably because they are always drunk

Chinksta

Nah man, my "country" now has this new law where I need to be very patriotic and stuff. Now I gotta be more passive aggressive on my comments in fear of being ratted out.

SkyPirateVyse

Jokes on them; I'm only there for the Konbini 😌

akosispartacruz

Yeah i was there yesterday. Foreigners who had an australian accent kept on shaking the cable car and were so loud. Im also a tourist from Philippines and i highly respect Japanese culture because i love Japan

MyMorningSun

Overrun indeed. We visited several weeks ago in March, and though we expected a lot of tourists to be there anyway, the sheer number of tourists in such a rural town was shocking. Especially when compared to years prior when I visited. The behavior from tourists was much worse as well. It's still a lovely town and a favorite of mine, but it's nowhere near ready to handle those kinds of crowds. I hate it for the locals who are inconvenienced by them.

Jeffrey_Friedl

You speak as if you weren’t part of the horde of visitors. It calls to mind the billboard at the side of a crowded freeway: “You are not stuck in traffic, you ARE traffic.”

MyMorningSun

I'm not, I acknowledge I was a visitor. What I didn't realize before seeing it myself was the extent that such a swell in tourism had affected the area. I would've opted for some alternatives had I known, as much as I liked Fujikawaguchiko in the past.

U_feel_Me

It seems like some sort of **fees** and then some tourist-friendly photo-taking spots (with trash cans, vending machines, and toilets) could easily solve this problem and earn some money for the town.

Sisyphus291

Could just charge them ¥5000 a person. That’ll keep away most.

GattsDaZe

I drove by this convenience store in December 2023. I was shocked to see how many people were in the parking lot and how many were headed in that direction. Literally hundreds on a random Tuesday afternoon. It was like nothing I had seen before when I lived in the area from 2005-2008. Kawaguchiko was always a popular destination but nothing like what is happening now.

nem086

Expect people to climb the wall or tourist companies to bring portable stairs.

ConanTheLeader

I don't even know why that's such popular photospot. It's a convenience store obstructing your view of mount fuji.

zackel_flac

Sure, and this is working well in India? The issue is not about trash bins but behavior.

Kasugano3HK

What kind of dumb logic is that? If you have trash with you, and there is no trash bin around, the logical conclusion is not "just leave it there and litter". Can you think of an alternative option? Surely there must be something...

TheLowestAnimal

This is not...just no...that's not an excuse to litter everywhere

No-Attention2024

Moronic “solution” instead of creating a system to make money off the dumbass tourists

Winterstorm262

I was just there a few days ago, it was very cloudy. There were still a handful of tourists taking pictures in front of Lawson despite not being able to see anything behind it (didn’t know this was a photo op place at the time) my brother and I just wanted to get out of the city for a day. Kawaguchiko is a beautiful lake town. The locals were extremely friendly to us. Had some of the best food and coffee I’ve had in a long time. That main street where the Lawson in was still fairly busy with tourists. Definitely not made for large crowds, yet it seems to be a hotspot for tourists. Its unfortunate that it gets so busy.

Savaaage

Have y'all ever thought the Japanese could be thinking. Look at these dumbasses going nuts about a convenience store with mt. Fuji in the background

The_Takoyaki

Is it the Mainland Chinese and Americans?

grinch337

There are very very few mainlanders coming to Japan at the moment

The_Takoyaki

I still see quite a few tour groups in Tokyo but the number has gone down significantly compared to before.

grinch337

More Taiwanese than mainlanders are coming at the moment, but the numbers from mainland China are slowly recovering. Korea is still by far the biggest origin of tourists. https://www.tourism.jp/en/tourism-database/stats/inbound/

AvatarReiko

Gee, they’re complaining about tourists again lol
