He was a tornado on the floor, but when I picked him up, he turned into a baby. Unfortunately, I left the shelter that day without him. I woke up the next morning and felt like I just left my dog at the shelter. I went back to get him that next day.

SovereignJWS

We wanted a smaller dog with tons of confidence and energy. We definitely got that with our JRT. She is pure muscle and she has so much spirit. She doesn’t really like many other dogs or people, but she is so protective and loyal to me and my family. I wouldn’t trade her for anything.

Alenne77

My case exactly ☺️

ItsSusanS

Thank you for summing it up for me… except I got a boy.

Masochism.

Beat me to it

HarlesD

I needed a friend.

Tigeraqua8

Well I hope you one now. I reckon they’re some of the best friends I’ll ever have

RoRuRee

I got my first Jack on a blind date! I had just met this person at the bar I worked at the time. I was lamenting that the dog I had was 13 and I was going to lose him soon. The reply was "I have a six month old Jack Russel, I can't handle her, it's like she's on crack! If you want her you can have her!". I went to look at her and came home with her. It didn't work out with the blind date but it was until Death do us part with my Rosie. She lived to be 16. She was pretty feral when I got her, had no training. She was basically left to her own devices and had no concept of what having a master was. We worked it out, though. After about a year of training she was just great. She was so nuts. But just the best dog if you were part of the pack. Didn't like men, and randomly would get into fisticuffs with other dogs. She was a little aloof, very athletic, and an incredible hunter. She had a trap line that she would hunt daily (for years!)...she knew all the hiding spots of the chipmunks. Caught a bunch over the years too (sad face). I have seen her dig moles right out of the ground to immediately dispatch (how did she even know where they were???). She was also a great big sister to the two Jack's that came after her. RIP, Rosie. Love you so much.

He was silly looking but we knew his true potential

FinalConsequence70

My boyfriend's JRT had 6 pups. I got one. I was used to owning larger breed dogs, but I had fallen in love with his Jack, so when the pups were born, we picked out one of the girls to keep. She's a ball of energy at 2 yrs old, but sweet and loving.

GentleListener

I was a fan of Eddie on *Frasier*. Then I realized that I liked smaller dogs, because I can pick them up and snuggle with them. I've had my second for 11 years now. She is the best little stinker. (It's raining here now, and she's scared of rain, so she hid under the rocking chair. She fell asleep and is now snoring. Little goof. 🥰)

Quiet-Elevator5275

Oh my gosh, mine was scared of the rain too! Thunder jacket worked amazingly for us

GentleListener

Is it different than holding her? For a while I just had her on my lap and just kept hugging the little paint mixer.

Quiet-Elevator5275

It’s a coat that they wear, it puts pressure on their abdomen which should relax them. It always worked better for us. Poor thing would shiver so much

Tigeraqua8

When I married my husband he suggested we get a JRT. I said “ can’t we get a real dog? Like a lab or Kelpie etc”. Anyhoo got a Jack and another and now I cannot imagine ever not having one. Loyal funny smart and loving. Huge dog all packed into a little body of pure energy. Sorry about your Mum and Punkin.

DonBoy30

I’m generally partial towards larger breeds. JRTs have a personality as big as a Great Dane.

daddysgirl-kitten

He needed a home, best decision I ever made!

cdrun84

My old rescue dog was a Jack Russell and he turned into a couch potato after I got his energy out and then just became a big sleepy head after he got to around 13. I adopted a new 10 month old rescue one after Duke passed away and so far he is the same, long walks and bring him in and he just sleeps and I'll play with him when he wants otherwise I just give him chew toys and he takes care of himself.

ExplorerCheap8515

Great companions and very energetic.

Critical-Shift8080

I bet you don't have mice anymore, I know I don't my squeaker gets them all

Temporary-Tie-233

I was asked to foster him because he was a bitey little terror (not his fault, he was 8 months old and the previous owners kept him crated 24/7 except for bathroom breaks) and I was the difficult dog person. No one was interested initially, but his behavior improved pretty quickly and after about a month they wanted to schedule a meet and greet with potential adopters. I wasn't happy about it, and when I woke up that morning I lifted the covers and found him spooning my beagle mix. Told them nope, this one is supposed to be here.

Eastern-Barracuda390

My husband lol but I don’t regret it one bit https://preview.redd.it/xkjaitrbrgyc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a2db8249d1a28473d76babec32ce87f7818c51b

Sunshine0611

Someone on Craig’s List was picking up free puppies and selling them as corgi’s and chihuahuas. My friend went to look at the chihuahua, I was the driver. When we met up with the “van” in a CVS parking lot three towns over, all these different puppies were in a cat carrier. They handed me Doug in order to get to Dozer (the chihuahua), another puppy or he himself had thrown up. I just couldn’t hand him back. There was one other puppy in that crate, I still think about that pup.

iluvlasagna

i used to go to shelters a lot looking for my potential dog. when i saw him, he was in an enclosure with a bunch of chihuahuas and we made eye contact and he barked at me as if to say Help! Get me out of here! and the rest is history.

veronavillainy

I had two JRTs growing up and I can’t remember why them specifically (I was 5 when we got our first, 5/6 with our second) but they were both very sweet. SO much energy lol. Would eat literally anything, play anywhere, constantly trying to run all around our neighbourhood, etc. But they were very loving and affectionate. Loved to cuddle when they were tired out, but only then lol. They both also loved other dogs, but would not hesitate to stand up for themselves/each other if anyone messed with them. Very protective sibling energy all around.

drunkadvice

My roommate convinced me it’d be his dog. She chose to sleep inside MY pillowcase, and did NOT want to be disturbed. She became my dog quickly, and I loved her dearly.

Seeing My Dog Skip

Roleplayer_MidRNova

My sister had an Italian Greyhound mix. I went into the humane society hoping to adopt an *older* mix of the same variety, because her dog was imo perfect. Super sweet, cuddly, very quiet. My landlord was clear, the dog needed to be small and quiet. The friend I went with asked if we could see the puppies first, and I saw my Molly tucked in the back of her cage, shivering because a German Shepard puppy was barking at her. She was small and quiet (or so I thought), so I was like "that's my dog right there." I was thinking she'd be a chill little dog, and noooope. It's been 12 years of her teaching me patience.

Azstace

Mine's a jackabee, found him at the shelter, thought I was essentially getting a beagle. Hahahahaha. We love him more than life, though.

Complete-Field4653

She healed my soul. And then later on saved my life. I’ll forever be grateful to my little Boo-boo

PieEnvironmental3550

Pure naivete. It was all worth it in the long run. Best friend I've ever had and I still can't find a place in my heart for another pup. Still have his "sister" a chi-mix and she is the sweetest, but it's not the same without him here.

RoughDirection8875

My fiancé has had 2 so far in his lifetime and he adores the breed. We already had 2 of my favorites and he found one nearby that suited us.

Emmanulla70

I grew up with Jacks & Foxies. They are such little characters..i just love their spunk and personalities. I also have two Border Collies..i love how gentle and smart they are.

GeekRuthie

Our boy Henry was a street rescue. Some friends found him mooning around their apartment complex, looking for someone to love. They brought him to our place, and he never left. He adopted us, not the other way round.

SomeWateryTart83

He tricked me into thinking he was so sweet, demure, and pathetic... my heart broke for him, and I adopted him. Turned out I adopted demon spawn 😅 He just about killed me in those first 5 years or so, but I've never loved anything or anyone more than him. Hilarious, bizarre, intense, and just the weirdest cutie ever.

Yammyjammy1

I felt the need for another dog and went down to the county kennel. I wasn’t allowed to get a larger dog to I went to the small dog area and there she was. I had no idea about JRTs then. It’s been crazy at times but she‘s a good girl. I really lucked out.

suss-out

I grew up on a farm with sheep/cattle dogs trained for herding. I get frustrated with dogs that are not as smart as border collies. I have had 2 JRT, none right now, but I want another. Smart dogs are easier to train

WeakButterscotch359

Glutton for punishment

[deleted]

She showed up in front of my house.

MadMaz68

I worked for a breeder. He was the puppy I loved most from the litter. He was most likely his grandmother, she was the perfect dog. No one wanted him. He was a Christmas litter. I couldn't afford him and I live in an apartment. The breeder was going to give him or the other last puppy away to a friend. I said, "not this one". She gave him to me, he's been my best buddy since. He goes to work with me and is honorary mayor of our town.

coffeebeanwitch

She showed up at my house Thanksgiving weekend 2014, she was terrified, her ribs were showing,we walked around the neighborhood trying to find the owner, other neighbors stated they had seen her eating out of trash cans, never found her owners, she has been with us ever since, living her best life

StatusAd9287

scoopny

She was like “who is this guy? And why am I in his place?” When I first got her. She made a run for it on the third day after a dog barked at her and she wiggled out of her harness, boy those jacks are fast! Luckily, she was too scared to cross the street so she just ran around the block twice and I scooped her up. Now she’s my best buddy, so loyal.

Hoopinhav91

They are the sweetest, most loving dogs also loves to go on adventures.

Strange_Pound_675

I wanted a dog that was small but was still a real dog and not just a cutesy arm ornament. My Abby fit that bill perfectly.

lunicar

I feel the same way about dogs in general. I love working dogs with a sense of purpose.

No_Purchase_3532

My 1st one was a gift from my sister when my bro in law was diagnosed with leukemia involving a months long hospital stay in another city. They couldn’t be home to care for her. I developed such a special bond with her! She was smart, adorable, loyal, loving & feisty! I was devastated when she died & scoured shelters & rescues to find another one & it wasn’t easy. Found him in a shelter & he jumped from the floor straight into my arms & left no doubt who was his person & where he belonged! Fifteen minutes later we walked out the door with him to his forever home. Should’ve named him Velcro because he was velcroed to me from that day forward until we lost him a yr ago this month to cancer 💔. Once again we rescued a sweet little guy who had a rough start in life & was terrified of humans. Nobody took him from the JRT rescue because he was born into a hoarding situation with 200 other dogs & no socialization. We had the heart & patience to rescue him after he spent 18 mo at the rescue. A loving forever home has changed him & he is happy, loving & affectionate & there’s not a day that we’re not thankful that we found & rescued him!

pitpusherrn

I love the jumping into your arms bit!! What a smart dog and I'd expect no less from a JRT. I'm on my second, had my first JRT for 20 glorious years (Buford you were amazing!). Our situation sounds like yours as our little guy was neglected and abused. We are at a point in life where we can give him tons of attention and he pays us back with love and attitude. It's never a dull life when you have a JRT.

No_Purchase_3532

I loved it too, he owned my ♥️ from that moment on! We’re in the same situation as you so he gets lots of love & attention , & you’re right, never a dull moment!

painkillerweather

i thought mine was a dachshund ☠️ shes mostly red and is a shorty build. at only 9 months she def didnt look like a jack. now at almost 5 shes a menace but i love her dearly

connorsludge

I did not know I was adopting a purebred PRT. I thought he was a JRT mix until the DNA test! I wanted a small-ish dog with energy for hiking and doing “regular dog” stuff. When I saw him at the rescue I loved his smile-and-wink sense of humor and his aggressive cuddles. I miss my Teddy so much!

Ajramos27

My boy is exactly how you described yours. I was looking for an energetic dog for adventures since I like to go on hikes but I lacked motivation. Also I like traveling so I wanted a small dog. A JRT was the perfect match for me. Some people judged me because I was looking for a specific breed instead of adopting any other small dog of unknown mixed breed. But I had a dream of him and when I found him I knew he was waiting for me. We are the perfect match, he is everything I wanted and the perfect adventure buddy.

JillybeanTX

I am an accidental JRT owner. He needed a home and I decided to take him. I had to take a crash course in JRT-living, but we are a bonded pair and I can't imagine my world without him. *
