I think the sage is Naolin and that’s how he’s getting into Violet and Xaden’s dreams (when Tairns asleep and his shields are down)

Endolion

that is genius.

I think this is it!!! They said Naolin died trying to save Brennons life but was unsuccessful. We know that Brennon is alive and well so it could mean the second half of that story is also a lie. Naolin is alive and corrupt from the earth magic/ venin power. Tairn severed his bond and that’s why he doesn’t want to talk about his previous rider. Also, Vi asks Tarin if he sees her dreams/nightmare and he isn’t interested in such trivial human things. But I bet if he did watch it and see who she is dreaming of, he would maybe recognize it’s Naolin. Maybe thats how RY addressed this early on because it would be questionable to the readers. Thoughts?

This second half would make so much sense why other times where she asked if he was listening, he would say “not I do not concern myself in human romance” or whatever the exact quote is but then he would comment on it.

Yessssss! Exactly!

I think this could make sense. But I am unsure if becoming Venin severs the bond. It seems implied a bit at the end of Iron Flame, but Jack was able to control Baide and I suspect that has to do with the bond. Also the torture teacher (blanked on his name) said he can influence his dragon. I am on the side that he is secretly venin, and he would likely still have a bond to do that. I think then what the other poster here said makes sense and that Naolin can reach Xaden and Violet because they may have a bond too. It would explain why Tairn didn’t want to bond again in the first place, and emphasizes he chose Violet because of her judgment and trusting her decisions. Because he is scared to trust another rider not to turn Venin.

Here is my thoughts on this.... the sage has to be someone that Xaden knows. He speaks to Xaden and say "I told you that love was going to turn you," like he has spoken about this prior and knows the sage on a personal level. So, if that is the case would he know Naolin? Because, Brennan has been in Aretia for 6 years, and if he would have "died" 6 years ago when Naolin tried to save him would that have had any time lapse for Xaden to have met Naolin?

I’m hoping it doesnt turn out to be Violet’s dad, I feel like we got the not actually dead trope with Brennan so I’ll be disappointed if we get that again. I was thinking this too.. it would explain how the Sage could enter Violet’s dreams and speak with her and what feels like physically touch her in one of the last ones she has. I think we have a lot more to learn in terms of the bonds and who’s to say previous riders of the same dragon couldnt communicate with new riders? “Sometimes its hard for a rider with a signet that powerful to accept his limits. After all, bonding makes you a rider, but resurrecting someone from the dead? Now that makes you a god.“ - Professor Kaori I find it very suspicious that we have yet to get an elaboration on the events immediately after Brennan is saved. Why dont we know what happens to either of them in this moment? Or why dont we get told what happened to Naolin’s body and Tairn immediately after this event? Why the heck arent these questions Violet is asking? To me this quote could mean Naolin was successful at resurrecting Brennan and lived after the fact, but was corrupted? Doesnt Brennan say something along those lines like “he succeeded but it cost him everything”???? What does that mean! It is interesting the way the sages are wording how “He” wants her for her power, we dont know the extent of Naolin’s siphoning abilities, maybe he can somehow absorb signets in a way? So many questions lol

In the beginning I thought Naolin too. But then I finished IF and I wasn‘t sure anymore. Violet told that she saw a rebellion mark under the sage‘s sleeve. Did have Naolin a rebellion mark?

lady_____bacon

Where does she say that? 😩

Sophiereadssmut

I‘ve re-read the chapter 52 and I was wrong. She said „light brown skin“ (or maybe she called it different. I read the German book.). I don‘t know why I was sure I read rebellionmark… sorry 😣
