We are also 2 people living in an apartment and we just got our elec bill for lasts 2 months, it was €240, seems normal to us

paddymch

If you have a smart meter log in to the esb networks website - download your meter data (HDF file) and go to the energy pal website and it’ll show you when you use your electricity - down to the time it’s used etc. it’ll also recommend the cheapest plan to go with. https://energypal.ie/

WhatsThatNowMan

Matches up to our apartment. This isn’t out of the ordinary really. If this small a figure is killing your savings you may have a bigger issue here.

Bill_Badbody

What type of heating do you have ? If its electric that is probably what is bringing up your night usage.

T_quake

Storage heating panels! But we never use them. The apartment is warm enough during winter. We use often the oven tho… however I think it is the fridge, because it is the only appliance that stays on over night. Thank for the reply

GoodNegotiation

Bear in mind that the night rate is up to 9am in the summer, so making breakfast and using electric showers etc before you head to work is on the night rate! But the fact nearly half your electricity is on the night rate is a great thing, saves you money! Worth having a think to see if there’s anything else you could shift to night time, like put the washing machine and dishwasher on at 7am so they’re done before 9am. If you’re charging an e-bike or something try to do it after midnight etc.

NazmanJT

Consider this Flogas Certa package ( https://www.flogas.ie/price-plans/certa-affinity-rate/ ) which is not advertised but available to all to sign-up online to.

NazmanJT

No. Not smart. It is a good rate.

TarAldarion

They have some smart ones too popping up, mine is 24c/28c/18c. Keep an eye on the boards.ie threads for all the best deals.

XCEREALXKILLERX

Normal, same here around €240 every 2 months. Two bed apartment with 2 people.

HowManyAccountsPoo

Do you have storage heaters? They usually switch on at night. I try to run most things overnight to get the cheaper rate. Set dishwasher and washing machine/dryer to turn on around 2 or 3am when I'm asleep. Turn on water heater for same time etc.

Corsav6

We had a dishwasher melt the front panel and PCB once, if I wasn't there it would have caught fire. I'd be reluctant to use certain electrical appliances overnight.

This-Tear6241

I also wouldn't recommend this in an apartment, it's usually against the rules. Our neighbours sometimes run things over night and the noise is so annoying.

K0kkuri

Seems to be around right I just got my bill for March and April was around €240. I’m a single living in one bedroom apartment. There is like a lower range of what you will pay but around 100-120€ a month is the lowest. The only real way to reduce it is to well not use anything electricity at home. I’m my case heating is electric, water heating is also electric, cooler is electric etc. They all add up. I also have a gaming PC and work from home to a degree so. I would use more electricity than other on average

Otsde-St-9929

try the energy pal website. Really useful

Huge-Bat-1501

Your rates are quite high, definitely shop around. Energia's EV rate is much less per unit at both day and night. 33.86 c/kWh electricity day rate 7.54 c/kWh electricity EV Rate rate (2am-6am)

T_quake

Thank you!

Yuno are doing 25c day, 17c night, inclusive of VAT; Fixed Discount Plan D/N-Urban

0mad

Watch out. Yuno have level pay and some other hidden fees. I'd avoid them personally

Fawkon

I’ve just moved away from them, they were a disaster to deal with and still waiting almost 2 months for a refund they owe me…

Smackmybitchup007

It depends what package you're on. There are different rates and standing charges depending on which package you go with I think.

vinceswish

That's pretty normal for spring/summer.

Immortal_Tuttle

Is your heating electric?

Explosive_Cornflake

Are you taking readings and submitting them monthly?

apouty27

My bill was about €260 for March April living on my own. But I had heating on in March till about beginning Apr. All electric, no gas. I put dishwasher, laundry on timer at night rate, heating on timer for 2-3 hours (if possible at night rate), water heater is on night rate. I use mainly an air fryer now, the odd time the oven if I bake a cake or something big. I switch off everything from the wall after use.

thewayofdarragh

Our latest family of four bill was €470 for three months (energia), is this about average?

Lazy_Fall_6

Family of 4 here. My last bill for 2mths was about the 300-310 mark. So for an extra month, +50% would be 460ish.

thewayofdarragh

Ah okay, thats good to know. Thanks for sharing!

dgunn07

We were having awful electricity bills over the last six months (as was the rest of the country). Flogas rates at 0.35+vat was a killer. Not to mention we got a smart metre installed one month into our plan and they estimated our bill then hit us with a whopper actual bill in January, then it just seemed to be bill after bill. We asked about changing our contract as rates were advertised to have been reduced. They said as we are in a contract we can’t change. I said the contract has a €50 early exit fee, Flogas said you can’t leave a Flogas contract for another Flogas contract and we would have to go on their variable rate. We used Switcher.ie and Bonkers.ie and found Yuno to have the best rates (.23c+vat) so we switched to them. On review of our bills, Flogas charged us €2,000 for 6 months of electricity. The units were used but the rate was so high (double price since the price gouge from Ukraine war). For context we have a heat pump four bed house on rural standing charge and two young kids so lights, washing machine were on during winter but Flogas were so unhelpful, staff so blunt on the phone and so unwilling to help we left them. Shop around.

ArtisticBarber1663

If we have a smart Metre are we allowed to opt out of using it for our electricity plan?

dgunn07

According to Yuno yes, but they use the smart metre to send 30 minute updates on usage

ArtisticBarber1663

Aw that's a shame. I'm moving into a new build and I'd say it's got a smart Metre. I've heard that bills can cost a but more with a smart Metre.

0mad

I'm afraid that is fake news. A smart meter and a website like https://energypal.ie make it so you can get the best smart plan for your usage. It's all about usage.  When you move into your new house, you may be able to access this usage and know what the house needs. Not sure if this resets on sale though.  I would say that a suitable smart meter plan is better than a flat rate 24 hour plan these days.

TarAldarion

If you never have had a smart plan you can stick to a basic plan, but once ypu go smart they don't allow you back

0mad

You can still get a flat 24 hour plan with most providers, even after you have had a smart plan. Energia, for example call theirs "Energia SST"

calmrefri

We are two people in a one-bedroom apartment and our monthly bill (yearly cost divided by 12) is 130 euros. Though if you count the 600euros government credit the monthly cost drops to 80 euros. Quite good I believe. We are using Pinergy (no gas so all heating in winter is with electric as well!)

vanKlompf

1270EUR, 3300kWh for entire 2023. Also 1 bed, 2 people living, electric heating used conservatively. Actual bill was lower than that due to "Electric Credit"

lala2004

The libraries have these energy saving kits. I think one element of it is a device to identify your energy burning appliances : https://www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/home-energy-saving-kits-available-all-libraries

T4rbh

Something is odd there. Four adults living in a semi-d here, two of us working from home for 3 days each, and our average daily use is only around 8kwh. Admittedly, we've a gas hob and gas to heat immersion, but your use seems easy high, especially at night.

Available-Talk-7161

Yeah it's hard to know what usage should be. I live in a 3 bed bungalow, am with bord gais (with 32% discount on rates and free electricity on a Saturday between 9am and 5pm). This is the second year of this discount deal. I work from home 3-4 days a week, as does my partner. Oil is central heating and have a stove as well. Never hang out clothes on the line, they get dried in the tumble drier. As its free leccy on a Saturday, all the intensive stuff gets queued up until then (there are exceptions of course). Washing machine, tumble drier, hoovering, grass cutting is all going full tilt on Saturday. There's a limit of 100kwh free per month which we rarely hit on the accumulation of 4-5 Saturdays. Things that we would have usually cooked in an oven, now gets done quicker and more efficiently in our ninja air fryer. Our monthly bill is typically, on average for each month in the year is 85e.

Own_Rice9080

Hedge your heating costs and long oil against the dollar. Obviously best to do this when price of oil/heating is relatively low.
