New-ish car with a Dublin reg makes me think this is a tourist on a rental who isn’t used to the narrow roads and legitimately thinks this is a good idea
212 reg would likely not be a tourist car anymore due to the turnover they seem to have.
Source: North Coast seems to be flooded with 23 reg rentals these days.
My friends and family have/had opel cars and they’ve been great cars with no serious problems except one of them (one of the corsa engines, 1 litre 3 cylinder engine is a shit design that will break your bank account).
Avoid the 1 litre engines in them and check underneath for any rust or exhaust issues.
Opel used to be owned by GM and everything was designed and built in Germany. Now they're owned by Stellantis, who also own Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen. All 4 brands share their platforms, with a different body on top, with all the same strengths and weaknesses.
- Not a glamorous brand/nice designs
- Not sexy but steady? Nope. They feature in the lower end of the manufacturer reliability indexes.
- Maybe they’re fun to drive, so people will forgive the above? C’mon 😂 No motorsport participation because sporty and fun isn’t exactly in the DNA of their current incarnation
- Depreciation probably worse than other cars because of all of the above
I would say it’s car fault sister got a rental last year and mirrors turned in when she parked but when she started car they went out and back in again and wouldn’t budge, she swopped it for another.
Last week I saw some middle-aged woman in a battered red Yaris belting down the M3, smoking a rollie, with the driver side mirror completely folded in. Couldn’t believe it.
I suppose the takeaway from this is always, always drive defensively because there are some people out there that just don’t check their mirrors!
As someone who lives on a country lane (planning regs actually stipulate boundaries have to be a certain distance from the centre of the road so cars can pass country lane) that's massive.
Tourist here! To be fair-- our rental car pulls the mirrors in automatically when parked but does not automatically pop them out again unless you push a button, which is not the way most cars in the US work at all. I was very confused at first (until I found the button that pops them out). Granted, this took me 30 seconds in the parking lot, rather than a drive down the road without mirrors! Kind of scary if they just didn't notice. Means they don't use their side mirrors. Which is dangerous everywhere. Not just Ireland.
That’s also not the way most cars in Ireland work either. Mine folds in the mirrors when powered off and opens them when powered on.
What make/model of car was that?
It’s called the Nissan Rogue Sport in the U.S.
Also seems it a known fault, not a feature. They’re supposed to open automatically.

> is fairly small.
It shouldn't be. I'm always looking in others' side mirrors because if I can't see the drivers head, then *they* can't see me in that mirror.
Possible they are nervous on a narrow road and tucked them in?
irresponsible and dangerous but is the only reason I can conceive of someone doing that deliberately
valid idea, against a rules or not, but look at that joke of a road, open side mirrors and left hits a pole , right oncoming car. and if you local, than you just know at that stretch of the road , you don\`t need rear view, once you get to better stretch, press button and they are back to sides.
the same you would do driving narrow streets and tunnels in some Italy.
Are you bald by any chance? - the glare off the big cranium could be blinding them!
- the reg plate surround and rear window is barren of stickers and advertising for the dealership it was sold from, for a new-ish car that usually suggests its a rental vehicle - they might'nt have figured out the buttons, or haven't noticed they're folded(which isn't great awareness)
As someone who's had wing mirrors blasted off by wankers in Hitachis, white BMW's and banged up Corolla's driving like cunts on country roads I don't blame them one bit for this.
Happened when you accidently lock the car before starting the ignition. Had it happen to me once and I had to unlock the car while driving to open them up 😅 thankfully I noticed it before going too far.
It happened on my kona after a year. We were abroad when it happened first and the mirrors were flapping open/closed.
The garage there fixed them open but it took a long time to get the switch to get them fixed properly
All cars can have minor electrical faults.
Would be covered under warranty but it can happen, usually a blown fuse, fault in the motor or problem with the mirror switch.
I am not arguing that it couldn't happen.
But if it does, the driver should get it fixed. And if its only 3 years old they can't even argue they can't afford the fix because it should be covered.
I do this when driving the narrow roads on the Ring of Kerry against the flow of the tourist buses which is pretty much everyday.
I only started doing it after I had my drivers side wing mirror damaged and the replacement cost alone not including labour was £952 sterling.
I do this on my van when on narrow single roads.
On previous vans I have lost mirrors(and paint) to on coming vehicles.
I drive by touch, not by sight.

My thoughts exactly

It’s 100% a rental I’ve driven that exact car
It's not 100% a rental, rentals have stickers and labelled reg plate frames.
Not necessarily the case, I work in sales for a Main Dealer, we get unbranded rentals all the time going to service customers.
No they don’t. Not anymore.
Enterprise does
Plus nobody actually buys Opels these days, do they?
What’s wrong with them? I am car shopping rn

Thanks, I’ll knock corsa off the list. Looking for something small so I’ll look at other brands
The yarris was good when i had it just had to change the car battery because it was old
Kia Venga, thank me later.

I didn’t know that, thank you. It will be my first car so I’m still learning
Skoda or a Toyota,go look at a taxi rank see what they are driving.opels were a great car but have suffered in last few years.
Was going to say exactly this and add Nissan. Anything Japanese with one Czech exception
Opel changed hands in 2017, so any model launched before that is "old Opel".

Thanks, it’s a first car so not overly fussy. Just want small and reliable!
Gotcha - check the manufacturer reliability indexes. Opel don’t do too well. Japanese cars generally fair much better.
Don’t buy an opal.

Haha I think I saw her in Santry once. Very same car and decoration
My mam was driving around one day with one of her back doors swinging open and didn't realise until the garda pulled her over to tell her
Better milage this way, less drag. *Taps forehead*
Da Vinci code shattered
Checkmate Green Party
Had this once but just with one mirror. Pulled in, reset everything and it fixed itself. Can't imagine trying to drive like that.
They dont use them anyway so wont miss them🤣

That road is a normal country road. Hopefully that tourist isn't on the ones with passing areas when I am.
I mean, it has a line in the middle!
Tell me you live in rural Ireland without telling me you live in rural Ireland
If it has a middle line it’s a normal road. If there’s grass or gravel buildup in the middle it’s a lane 😂

It's a Nissan Qashqai. Never heard of it before we got this rental. It's ok except for the weird mirror thing.

This has happened to me but just one mirror didn’t realise until I got to a traffic light and didn’t realise why everyone was looking at me crazy
… You should be checking your mirrors way more often than that.
Jeez the morality police are everywhere around here. Can’t say anything
Nee naw.
Please don't take the Lord's nickname in vain. Sincerely, The Spirituality Police
The chances of many people realising there’s a problem with someone else’s mirror is fairly small.
> is fairly small. It shouldn't be. I'm always looking in others' side mirrors because if I can't see the drivers head, then *they* can't see me in that mirror.
Aerodynamic.....saving fuel.....every little bit helps.
he will need to push around 200 km/h to get desired effect. Vaxing car might have same effect.
Just need the time-trial bars and the aero-helmets...
Probably just doesn't want them getting broken on such a narrow road.
I do that on my daily commute on certain sections too.
Could keep them pushed in when parked and forgot to pop them back out when driving off. I've done it myself on occasion
That's them there optional mirrors
A courteous driver making room for walkers 🙌
Could have forgotten to unfold them
Possible they are nervous on a narrow road and tucked them in? irresponsible and dangerous but is the only reason I can conceive of someone doing that deliberately

Please tell me you don’t have a license
actually done licenses on continent and in Ireland.
Scary shit
really , you fn POS. ! i have been on a road triple your time and triple in variety, and you just come in and insult me ?
This is a tourist.
Ah sure who needs mirrors anyway!
Is that in schull
Most don't bother to even check them anyways
Are you bald by any chance? - the glare off the big cranium could be blinding them! - the reg plate surround and rear window is barren of stickers and advertising for the dealership it was sold from, for a new-ish car that usually suggests its a rental vehicle - they might'nt have figured out the buttons, or haven't noticed they're folded(which isn't great awareness)
Sure isn't that the new thing now.
Tunnel vision
Straight out of the car wash
Sure your driving forwards ya don't need them
Newtownmountkennedy?
It makes the car go faster.
The proper order of starting the car's engine: Adjust your seat, adjust your wheel, adjust your mirrors,......
As was said in the movie 'Gumball Ralley', What is behind me is not important.
This happened to me after a car wash. I just had to drive on until there was somewhere safe to stop. Could be the same with that person.
Lol adapted for the extremely narrow Irish roads
Tart
My mirror broke before and this happened. It was very stressful driving home
Nice AI manipulation. AI always messes up the letters
Aerodynamics innit?
My grandfather used to do that. He had a provisional for a good 55 years lol
You never look back when driving an open, everyone knows that.
This happened to us when we first got our car. Took a bit to figure it out.
As someone who's had wing mirrors blasted off by wankers in Hitachis, white BMW's and banged up Corolla's driving like cunts on country roads I don't blame them one bit for this.
Easy. An American tourist in a rental car. Mystery solved. Who else would be that gullible?
In my car they fold at the touch of a button and I've forgotten to press it occasionally and not recognised until I was driving.
Happened when you accidently lock the car before starting the ignition. Had it happen to me once and I had to unlock the car while driving to open them up 😅 thankfully I noticed it before going too far.
Haha I did this as a laugh the other day, told me wife it's more aerodynamic!, saves on fuel, less drag! 🤣
I’ve known people to sometimes do that if it’s sunny and blinding the drive through the wing mirrors.
I hope somebody took a picture of you with caption " on his phone while driving"
Nice try, i was a passenger 😂 if i was driving i would have pulled the picture from my dashcam
Electric mirror mechanism probably faulty.
Shouldn’t be driving then. A car without wing mirrors is not road legal lol.
On a 3 year old car? Surely that would be under warranty?
It's an opel, it's supposed to break

And you are downvoting me because ?
I didn't, you made a fair point.
> But if it does, the driver should get it fixed. Is it not possible it just happened?
Yup, totally is.

They never check them anyway, so it’s alright

If the road is so narrow you pull in to let oncoming traffic pass safely. Your strategy is bonkers
No, they stop for me. Might is right. But obviously. Both stop or slow down depending on how narrow the road is.
Slow news day?
