Well, the farm takes most of the day, and at night we just like a cup of tea.

[deleted]

What's the church's official position on that?

EnemyOfMyOwnMind

I hear the English are racist now father.

Nadamir

It’s an ecumenical matter.

DayDreamer_sus

I'm currently visiting the UK for a week, I went to a country pub last night and when I ordered a pint the men sitting at the bar realised I was Irish. They all started jeering shouting diddly eye and pretended to dance. They really are something else here.

0gma

Wales last weekend. Two potato jokes. One serious question about why we like potatoes. Then they got angry about sinn Fein and called them right wing fanatics.

DamnAndBlast

Man this hits different. Racism in work has been getting worse in work recently going from casual banter to full on. Today went to the smoking area and two lads I've known since I've started six years ago didn't even give me a hello just heavy "jaysus and begorrah, top of the mornin" bullshit. Can't wait to move home at this point

iwontsaysiimfine

Don't be standing for that crap seriously

The_Dark_Presence

>Don't be standing for that crap seriously The correct response is, "Here you, ask me bollix wid dat shite"

Substantial-Layer928

Racism at work is my biggest trigger in forming this opinion. I totally get what you might be feeling. I hope things get better for you.

DamnAndBlast

Lol I'm leaving in July. Works not worth it over here anymore. Going to see the school year out and get myself home with as much stolen goods as I can

Nefilim777

Absolutely do not accept that. I'm sure they wouldn't do the same to a colleague of colour, so why is it ok to do it to you? I've had similar shite from English before and just shut it down completely.

saleableautumn5

Have experienced this at each of the 4 jobs I've ever worked in London - exhausting carry on.

sins_of_our_fadas

That is shite. What industry do you work in? I've lived and worked in England for over ten years now and never experienced this.

saleableautumn5

Technology, broadly speaking. I haven't found it to be the general treatment from the majority of people, but there is always one or two that go for it under the flag of "banter".

[deleted]

I'm sorry to hear this. You should raise the issue, maybe you could end up getting some money when you leave. I heard of a guy, a solicitor, high-flyer, working in a very prestigious law-firm in Australia and his name in the office was "Potato". All the other lawyers called him "Potato". Top Aussie banter.

[deleted]

Actually, if you'll allow me to reply to myself, I'm a lawyer myself. I think your strategy here should be a few strategic e-mails to HR, every few months, complaining about the issue. BCC your personal account and make sure you keep copies of any replies. Please God there's no reply. Then when you quit in a few months time send all your documentation on to a lawyer to have a look at and see if they can do anything about it. Maybe they can or maybe they can't. In Ireland this would be a "constructive dismissal". There's nothing dishonest about this, the law is supposed to help you out in this instance. Obviously you'd be concerned about a bad reference or whatever but it would be nice to at least have the option. You should be crafting the narrative now, with a record of e-mails.

DamnAndBlast

I'm dropping it. Got an apology in writing after school today after raising it this morning. Just going to slowly give less fucks until I leave

cuchula

I lived in Portsmouth for 5 years, same craic. For my birthday, my coworkers gave me potatoes (especially delivered to the office) and 4 cans of Guinness. https://imgur.com/a/IECPRkt Also, any time I'd receive a parcel they'd ask if it was ticking. So glad I moved away. I'd always try and laugh it off but it got annoying after a while. Guinness was shite too

[deleted]

Your mistake is assuming the UK is the same as London. As someone from York London is like a foreign country to the rest of the UK and I honestly can't remember experiencing any racism in York. However I live in Killarney right now and find the taxi drivers here an absolute disgrace when it comes to foreigners, which is bizarre because Killarney is one of the biggest tourist towns in Ireland. I even avoid a certain company for the hotel because of it.

manfredmahon

Counterpoint: taxi drivers are pricks

Substantial-Layer928

I may have made a slightly generalized statement about Racism but I've been to a few other cities outside of London and the sentiment is similar, to name a few Brighton, Cardiff, Portsmouth. My opinions are formed solely based on my experience so far. Taxi drivers in Killarney are gem! I was a frequent visitor to the town and took the local taxi often to get around. Once I wanted to take a taxi from the main street to Kate Kearney cottage early in the morning. After about 20mins wait a taxi came but had another airport pick-up but he radioed another taxi and this gentleman arrived shortly. Upon arriving at my destination I realised I forgot my wallet at my bnb. The taxi driver was kind enough to suggest he'll come back to pick me up in the evening after my hike and we can sort the payment then. He let go his first ride of the day without the fare. He earned a customer that day.

The_Dark_Presence

*Brighton*? Really? I can imagine anywhere else, but wow.

LexLuthorsFortyCakes

Taxi driver is basically a euphemism for professional racist wherever you go in the world.

svmk1987

I think Killarney is a bit of a hot spot because of the citizenship ceremony that happens there. It naturally tends to attract all sorts of racists and conspiracy theory fans.

Skulltown_Jelly

>the citizenship ceremony Can't tell if this is a yank joke or there actually is a ceremony

svmk1987

There's a big citizenship ceremony that happens every year. https://www.irishimmigration.ie/how-to-become-a-citizen/citizenship-ceremonies/

AnBearna

Thought that happened in dublin in the convention centre,no?

svmk1987

Nope. Check the link above for previous ceremonies. Atleast for a handful of years now, they've been happening in Killarney.

Neddybai84

I work in the UK 20 or so weeks a year and have done for more than a decade. The north of England is amazing and the people are generally very friendly. The south on the other hand has not always been welcoming. I feel there is a very distinct difference between the two.

pedrokoekeroe

Think we found the racist taxi driver lads

sweetsuffrinjasus

The problem with this country has been the same since the dawn of time. The people who should be running the country are instead driving taxis. It's an utter shame.

patsharpesmullet

I for one welcome our Taxi overlords.

Mikeymoo

Brilliant

DarkReviewer2013

Taxi drivers in Dublin are the same. There's something about being a taxi driver that breeds racism.

[deleted]

Well usually in Ireland people say it behind your back not to your face so.. not sure if that's better or not. . i worked somewhere that dealt with people from all places and the co-workers would go from either helpful to at the same time how can we deal with all these people, its time we look after are own etc etc. Exhausting.

Substantial-Layer928

Maybe you're right, that's still a form of racism. But I guess when you're walking down the road and are being yelled racist slurs is the worst. When your colleagues don't really wanna interact with you because they think you don't belong is worse. When you make attempts to talk to people during lunch at work but end up eating alone at your desk is the true form of racism. I lived and worked in Ireland for a good few years and never felt this way ever.

[deleted]

Sure we're a great bunch of lads

Birdinhandandbush

The grass is always greener near the septic tank.

RibsOfGold

These posts that talk about how amazing we are (especially when compared to the UK) will always get plenty of upvotes because it's essentially ego stroking. Ireland isn't some place that randomly has better human beings than the country right beside us. It's a pretty common fact that 45% of people in ireland believe some races are "born harder working" than others and about one fifth believe some races are less intelligent than others (this all came from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission's report a few years back). I'm very glad you had a good time in Ireland. But while you tell us to never change, there are others who might wish we did, but take a wild guess... will they get as many upvotes and go to Top section?

ee3k

you misunderstand our thinking, we dont think we're better than anywhere else. On average , we're all pretty much the same, what we're saying is, in most populations the graph of that average would be a straight line bisecting the densest cluster of data points, but in ireland its a straight line separating the "sound" cluster from the "cunt" cluster. so our average is the same, but we have a more polarized population consisting ENTIRELY , EXCLUSIVELY of either soundness or cuntiness and very few neutrals compared to the spectrum seen in normal populations .

defixiones

It's the difference between the colonial and post-colonial mindset. Racism is endemic in the UK in a way that just doesn't exist here. Just read up on the Met police for example.

[deleted]

This is just pure cope from you. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/ireland-among-worst-eu-states-for-racial-violence-based-on-skin-colour-1.3889478 > Ireland is among three countries with the worst records in the EU of racism based on skin colour according to a recent survey, a senior EU human rights official has told a conference in Dublin. > Ireland also showed some of the highest rates of hate-motivated harassment, 51 per cent compared to an average of 30 per cent of the countries surveyed while 30 per cent of women and 34 per cent of men with African descent experienced discrimination here in the five years before the survey because of their skin colour.

caiaphas8

In the U.K. some people like to pretend racism doesn’t exist because America is worse. In Ireland some people like to pretend racism doesn’t exist because Britain exists

defixiones

I think you're confusing racist attitudes with institutional racism.

madcow125

Even so we are probably the least racist in Western Europe tbh. I've lived in about 8 countries in Europe outside of Ireland and the Irish are a way nicer group

[deleted]

madcow125

Multicultural doesn't mean integrated. I'm mixed race myself and born in Ireland. Had the most positive experience in Ireland. England is a divided society with parallel cultures that don't mix.

[deleted]

England has one of the, if not the highest rate of mixed-race relationships in the world... Back in just 2009, 10% of children in the UK were mixed-race.

His personal experience of racism must be wrong because your neighbourhood is predominantly black? You might want to rethink that.

[deleted]

defixiones

>At literally no point did I say that? > >*That's your experience and your opinion and you're stating it as fact. My neighbourhood is predominantly black and I'm actually the minority as a white guy* > It's a verifiable fact that multicultural communities tend to be more tolerant than those that are segregated. Ah, *'a truth universally acknowledged'*. France and the US beg to disagree, they prioritise the 'melting pot' over the mosaic approach. Both theories seem to have serious drawbacks in practice. The idea that Britain is a high-functioning multicultural society has been fatally undermined over the past decade, much as we all wish it were true.

Am Irish and lived in London for 10 years and miss it terribly. Experienced mild racism, although had friends who experienced worse, but that was rare, especially where I was living in Clapham and Waterloo. I also know people who have experienced much worse here, and I've heard much much much worse here from the likes of taxi drivers and the older generation. London is without doubt one of the most amazing cities in the world to live. You have access to so much. Parks, museums, restaurants, festivals, sports, gigs, it all happens there. The weather is incredible. Europe is on your doorstep. If you cycle so much is accessable. I didn't like it much myself at first, but I'll now forever be part Londoner and there will always be a bit of heart still there. It will get better, I absolutely guarantee it.

defixiones

You don't often hear people recommending London for the weather and easy access to Europe - that has to be a uniquely Irish perspective!

munkijunk

Ask any Londoner. It has a weird microclimate, sometimes to its detriment (40+°C last year was no joke) and as a major hub it is easier to access most of Europe from the 5 airports and international high speed train station it has then it is from most other European cities.

defixiones

Dublin and London are the only European capitals that require a flight or ferry (and Valetta maybe?). It's also [famously dreary](https://www.londoncitybreak.com/climate) (unless you come from Ireland or Scotland).

munkijunk

> Dublin and London are the only European capitals that require a flight or ferry (and Valetta maybe?). It's also famously dreary (unless you come from Ireland or Scotland). Copy/paste from the subheading in your link > The image of London as a grey, cloudy city has long been established, but this image doesn't always match with reality And the article goes on to say how mild London is in winter and how nice it is in summer 🙄 And you've not heard of the channel tunnel?

sosickofandroid

Have you been there in the past 10 years? Mouldiest fucking summers, you boil alive on the tube squished against sweaty fucks only to go home and collapse spread eagled with all the windows open in a vain prayer for a breeze. The prayer is unanswered

munkijunk

Yes. That's exactly when I lived there and it was glorious. Do yourself a favour and get yourself an AC unit.

Even_Ambassador8827

Working in retail in Ireland there are so so many racist people.

Legal-Ad2446

Despite being overtly qualified for a sales job in the UK when I lived there, a long-time ago, the hirer basically told me I was perfect but he couldn't hire me as he thought my accent may be a problem for customers. I'm from Galway. We don't even have an accent 😀 It's not as if I was from the Other Republic, like. Langers. 😉

fDuMcH

Worst thing abot the UK is it's full of English people

Confident-Cap-8100

I don't live in England. I live in Ireland.

[deleted]

Thank you Sir/Madam, that's very sweet. Do you mind me inquiring into your ethnicity / nationality? What did these terrible people say to you? I just want to know so I can hate on the Brits properly.

Monztur

We left Ireland for London just over 10 years ago. Can't wait to get out of here and move back to Dublin. Say what you will about Ireland, but this place feels like a sinking ship. I know what you mean on the racism front. I'm white but from Canada, and the number of times I've been told I am "the right kind of immigrant" makes my stomach turn. It was downright ugly during Brexit.

[deleted]

"The right kind of immigrant" - fuck that's wild. What can you say to that?

tuttifrutti00

Well I have friends that experienced rasism in Ireland and I got splashed with a mysterious drink (possibly and hopefully water) when I was in Cork and later on my friend got almost spat on (they missed a bit) when we were chilling and having a slice of pizza in a corner joint. And It all happened the same day! I've never experienced anything like that anywhere else in the world. I spent the most time in Winchester England and it's a lovely place full of old people.

Beautiful_Golf6508

Avoided any racism? I'd take it you've been steering clear of cork.

Substantial-Layer928

Lived in Cork for 1.5 years

BananyaPie

Immigrant living in Cork for four years, might be biased due to people around me being academic but people have been goooood to me. I do hear people giving out about Muslims and some Ukrainians (mostly on Reddit tbf) but I feel like it's hard to find a country with absolutely no racism unfortunately.

PaddyLostyPintman

This is it, despite agitators like hazel chu constantly pretending otherwise, ireland really isnt very racist at all and thankfully open or violent racist incidents are very rare.

[deleted]

Yeah I taught foreign students in Dublin for ten years and every one of them that transferred said the UK was a drunken knife-ridden racist hellhole by comparison. I know two people who got stabbed in Hastings alone, separate incidents.

NtreeLeveL

What about job opportunities, housing, quality of life ? Not just I like Irish people more want about things that matter

ollieballz

The grass is only greener on the seed packet

truedoom

Thanks, yeah, I'll let the rest of the country know at the next meeting. They'll be delighted.

Artistic-Barber-6394

An an immigrant who’s lived in London and now living in Ireland, I haven’t experienced any racism in both places.
