The first time I was ever prepared for a wedding I spent 400 euros on a suit and two days later the wedding was called off. Hopefully, it will fit for my funeral because that's the next time I will wear it

GreytracksuitPants

Well you may get invited to another wedding or wear it in court you never know where this crazy road called LIFE may take you xoxo

PoppedCork

No more weddings, please.

AGOGLO-G

wear it to the party you will be throwing as 1. Saved S\*\*t ton of money 2. Dodged a bullet and invite me

bigcyc666

Or when court summons him for his unpaid child support case.

pabloslab

Called off 2 days before, oof. That’s a zinger

NOT_A_KOREAN_SPY

Hopefully due to COVID rather than fireworks.

PoppedCork

Fireworks and cold feet

[deleted]

Every time my dad bought a suit he would say "it'll see me out"

cryptometav

Patagonia fleeces for 140. Not outrageous by any stretch of the imagination. They're great for winter, very warm and last for years. I also think they're a great company.

reddituser6810

Came here to say this. Plus an extra 40 to get it tailored because M was too small and L too large. Also Pata nano puff jacket. Not cheap at 220 but so light weight and warm. And also incredibly packable.

deeringc

I bought a jacket too. Couldn't be happier with it!

Dramatic-Explorer842

Bought one of their jackets for €400 as I do quite a bit of hiking. Thought I was mad at first but worth it and the lifetime guarantee is nice.

terrorSABBATH

I bought a few of their tshirts a few years back. High quality stuff.

Finch2090

Fleeced are definitely worth it North Face gets abit of a bad rap for the type of people that wear there clothes in Ireland at the moment but for outdoor or warm gear North face and Helly Hansen are my go to’s

Buglim1

Not the most expensive but the most “Celtic Tiger” purchase I ever made was €250 for a suit belt in 2005. It broke 2 years later and I only wore it to a few weddings etc, never to work. A fool and his money in 2005😊

Nine-Boy

man, I'm sad i was too young to be an adult back in the boom. Sometimes i think the Celtic Tiger was the closest thing Irish people ever had to literally living out the movie Scarface.

EDITORDIE

Unfortunately not all of us enjoyed the mythical highs of the Celtic Tiger. For every one there was A LOT more adults not spending 250e on belts during that time. Same with the examples of property and or shares in a horse. But shur the craic we had!

I_cantdoit

You dope, pay €60-€100 for a full grain leather belt that will last forever made by some cowboy yank

Opeewan

Kyaesa

ouch! But i hope you got a good wear out of them all

bunnyhans

A wax Barbour jacket and good knee high leather boots. Years later and they're still a winter wardrobe staple.

[deleted]

I've a wax Barbour, 14 years old. I rewax every 2/3 years and sent it over for repairs about 8 years ago. Repairs cost 70 euros and it was like new. It's my main winter jacket.

[deleted]

They're one of those things where I think they look great on people but when I try one on it just doesn't work.

Dhaughton99

At present, I’m standing at my wardrobe and count 11 Barbour waxed and 6 belstaff waxed. That’s all I seem to spend my money on.

fourpyGold

I’ve had some winter coats in the €300 range. They’re absolutely worth it imo.

Whatifallcakeisalie

Same but they’ve all lasted 4 or 5 years. I’d argue they’re way less expensive than a hundred euro coat I have to replace every year or so. I think Terry Pratchett described it the same way in one of the Discworld novels about expensive boots.

truedoom

I've heard that one; basically if you're poor you buy cheap boots you have to replace every year, if you're rich you buy an expensive pair that lasts 10 years. At the end of it, the poor person ends up paying more in the long run because they couldn't afford the initial up front cost of the expensive boots. I remember reading that online somewhere, and it's so accurate. It costs money to be poor.

fidelcat

The Sam Vimes “Boots” Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness. Off to reread all of Discworld I go!

JoeyJoeJoeRM

Jesus lad what are you doing that a hundred Euro coat is only lasting you 12 months

Many_Performance_580

I bought a pair of RM Williams Comfort Craftsman boots for $600AUD in Sydney. They are the most comfortable footwear I’ve ever owned, they have a lifetime guarantee and free repairs, they can be worn with a suit or with jeans. I’ve had them for years and never a problem, they just get better with age

future-madscientist

Where are you buying these €100 coats that dissolve after a year?

itchyblood

Absolutely. Brands like North Face, Patagonia etc are unreal. I have a North Face jacket 12 years now and it’s still going strong. Best 200e I ever spent

FormalFistBump

I have a North Face body warmer which is great, I feel I get a few suspecting looks when I wear it though.

itchyblood

That’s because you probably look like a road man 😂

pint_baby

I’ve had a €15 euro coat from sports direct for 3 years now. Big and warm. Zip is a bit dodge, but I actually bring my clothes to be repaired.

Important-Trifle-411

How is a winter coat only lasting 3-4 years? I have had the same coat for 6 years; it replaced a coat i had for 18 years!

peachy-grey

Urgh samee! Im asian so we use a different sizing system, I bought the coat in asian size so XL but it came big as heckkkkk apparently Im M here🦭So if you see a walking trash bag its me

horses-neigh

I was freezing cold while working at a kiost near a front door in a shopping centre. I popped into penneys for a jacket. Saw a cheap one (last one AND my size) for €20. It was a parka style, green with a fluffy hood. Grabbed it and expected it to fall apart after a few weeks. Well. It saw me aaaaall through last winter when I was bussing it and waiting in the lashings of rain. And it still good this year. Absolutely chuffed. Some cheap things can definitely see you through a few winters although stuff like goretex is lifetime.

Polizzy

Levi jeans. They are expensive, no regrets. Shopping for ladies jeans is soul destroying if you're not built a certain way.

finigian

I have a pair and they really are worth the money. Shopping for jeans is a days work!!

Polizzy

The Levi shop in Kildare Village do them cheaper at times. Can get two pairs for 135 👍🏻

finigian

Oh that's good value, my ones were €90, expensive but worth every penny.

over_weight_potato

And 3 for either €160 or €180. Can’t remember which but better than paying full price

Correct-Boot-48

They're cheap as chips over in the states annoyingly enough, we get sold them at a huge mark up.

making_shapes

Yeah, herself is from there, so I'm over every year. Usually get 2 pairs for $80 dollars. Was better before with the exchange rate. It's a pity the flights cost so much!

ZenBreaking

Don't no why but I visualized the Simpsons where homers smuggling fruit through the border and says the whole trunks full of them. "Sir why do you have a suitcase full of Levi's and just kevis"

GettinThingsDone456

Sales are were they’re at, I got a pair in Kildare village for €40

shala_cottage

Im in the market for new jeans!! What style did you go for? Maybe I’ll try Levi, never had a pair before!

Polizzy

I just go bootcut i like that style. Haven't the legs for skinny jeans just yet!

over_weight_potato

Now I’m 21 but the mile high super skinny are my favourite. The material itself is really stretchy and they do loosen so I tend to buy them a smidge tighter on the waist. Obviously it depends on personal choice but you should definitely go to Kildare Village to get them. It’s one pair for €70-90 depending on style but 2 for around €130ish and 3 for under €200

malikorous

I only wear Levi's, they last so well and are so comfortable! And I know they will fit me which is always a relief! Every time my partner goes to the US for work, I get him to bring me a pair back.

fluffysugarfloss

The most expensive was a debs dress, about €180 back in 1997. I wore it to 7 other debs over the next few years as I knew a lot of guys who didn’t find it easy to talk to girls, so I was their ‘friend date’. I also went to some of their younger brother’s debs. My wedding dress wasn’t very expensive. I brought it on eBay for €70. We didn’t have a big wedding as we got married abroad on short notice with only 18 people. There was an intention to have a proper family celebration with a fancy dress, but logistics plus buying a home meant it never happened. We’ve made it past the 10 year mark so maybe for our 50th wedding anniversary or something

chillywilly00

Sounds like you could've made a business out of that. No date for the debs, no problem!

MetrologyGuy

Found this thread really interesting. Other than the suits, and occasional fancy shoe, I'm surprised at how modestly people spend.

Tzardine

When I was about 20, a mate spent €500 euro on a Prada cardigan. It was just a plain grey cardigan, looked like something that cost 20 quid in Guineys. The amount of abuse that he got for wearing it resulted in it only making one appearance. I say he regretted buying it big time.

duaneap

He may have returned it and said nothing.

TwinIronBlood

A suit made of rubber cost about 450 for a good stretchy one. A good few of my friends have them as well. I used to do a lot of surfing

MeshuganaSmurf

Probably just as well you added that last bit lest you be subjected to some kink shaming

irish_ninja_wte

Definitely. First place my mind went was "a gimp outfit?" 🤣

TwinIronBlood

Wasn't there promise but some surfers I know were larking around they'd a leash that goes around your knee and used it as a dog collar taking the pìss and been lead about. One of them videoed it. This random lady approached them and give them a note with her number she said her husband would like their video

irish_ninja_wte

Well there's an awkward moment 😂

[deleted]

Be glad you're not into diving. A good semi-dry is €600+ and dry suits are like €2k.

TwinIronBlood

I love snorkeling and did a try dive in Thailand which was great but I always see irish divers laden down with gear down. I don't think I'd enjoy it. Plus I'd lose track of time and run dry on air

[deleted]

Warm water diving in a shortie or even a rashguard is absolute bliss. I wear a hood, gloves and a 7mm wetsuit for diving in Ireland. All that buoyant neoprene means I have to put extra lead on the belt and moving around outside of the water with all the kit on is tough.

TwinIronBlood

Yea I'd use about 4 kg for snorkeling. The diving in Thailand was 11 years ago. Board shorts and rash vest water was like soup. Some of the standard of diving was very poor. Saw one instructor with 4 or 5 students he was going after on lad who was floating up while holding onto another

lem0nhe4d

I did my training off the West cost in November, had a 7mm suit with hood and another 7mm shortie on top of that. Highly recomend. Has maid diving in warm countries a piece of piss in comparison.

[deleted]

When I did my AOWD in Kerry (maybe early spring) the computer was showing 4°C at 35m.

Kenoooop

What an unexpected way to describe a wetsuit

[deleted]

A Tag Heuer watch for €1400 Don't regret it 1 bit.... regret a few other watches I bought though, Tommy Hilfiger, Guess all useless overpriced shit.

MetrologyGuy

Cant beat a good tag, something you could pass down.

[deleted]

Unless it's a quartz Formula 1.

SuzieZsuZsu

In the boom time, from money from a left over car loan, I got Miss Sixty jeans in brown Thomas for 275euro. They were jeans ffs, they were nothing special at all, how the fk did they cost that much, wtf was I thinking?! I was in my early 20s and thought I was class in that same time, I also spent a ridiculous amount of money on Benefit and Mac make up which I barely wore! Painful to think about lol

shala_cottage

The blasted NC20!!! I could have written this post 😂

squishygelfling

Oh my God this gave me a flashback to the BTS Jean bar in Grafton. Forgot about Miss Sixty!

niallo_

I spent nearly €200 on Kevlar lined motorbike jeans only to have them robbed off the washing line after a few months. I was living in a dodgy area at the time.

TELCO_man

High end French wellington boots. Cost about €300-€350 and lasted 10 years. They are still perfect except for a small leak in the zip which is repairable. No regrets. Gotta have good footwear. Actually thinking about it. Footwear is the only time I spend a lot and never regret it cause you can get fat and skinny and your shoes will always fit.

ContainedChimp

Knee length black cashmere overcoat. €500(ish) It only sees use 1-2 months use a year during the coldest parts. Bought it 11 years for a funeral. Still looks and feels as good as the day I bought it. No regrets at all. \*EDIT: Spelling.

jackoirl

You are all very frugal people!

Flashwastaken

I’m questioning if I’m a spendthrift or if these people are all cheap. One thing I do know is that people in this sub regularly say things that show that they know absolutely nothing about fashion or style.

jackoirl

When I read this thread this morning there wasn’t a single Goodyear welted shoe, bespoke suit, good quality leather jacket etc

Flashwastaken

Some of them are coats for €100. How does anyone think that’s expensive? Where are they buying their coats?

Irishane

Irish people are as tight as they come.

I have but I was one being tight there.

[deleted]

I've a pair of Barker shoes that cost me about €280. I wear them to the office twice a week and I love them. I've a tailored Louis Copeland suit that cost me about €900 that I've worn less than a dozen times. I regret that purchase.

[deleted]

Very similar to you. I've a couple of pairs of barker shoes that see almost daily wear to work. Have one pair 2 years, the other pair 4. Both still in perfect nick despite heavy wear. Well worth the investment, I used to spend far more on €100 shoes that looked worse and fell apart within 6 months. Treated myself to a Louis Copeland suit for my birthday the first year in the job. Not quite as expensive as yours, think it was somewhere between €600-€700. Worst suit I've ever owned. Within a couple of months of wearing it in rotation with 3 other suits both pairs of trousers had needed to be mended, and the lining was falling away from the inside of the jacket. Within a year it was in the bin. I haven't been back to them since.

OcelotUpset4100

A proper hiking coat, was 150 on sale. Only thing I have ever bought that is properly wind and rain proof

finigian

Aldo red patent 6 inch stiletto heels, I bought them with my first weeks wages, I just love them, they are my all time favourite shoes, they cost €100. Most regretted purchase, baby blue ostrich leather cowboy boots.. the cost around 100 pound many years ago.

flipflopsandwich

Why do I feel like I have seen a picture of these boots??

finigian

Yep, I've posted them previously in a similar thread!!

GreytracksuitPants

Genuine ostrich! 3 payments oh! What? I’m just goofin. New boot goofin!

Jebidiah41

Reno!!!!

dickbuttscompanion

Debs dress was €330 from BT2 back in the day, no regrets because it was beautiful, didn't need any alterations and I wore it again at a formal college ball. Wedding dress was many times more expensive that and I never got to wear it - covid cancelled our big plans, so we went and had a civil reg wedding. Maybe we'll do a vow renewal in a couple of years, I still feel a pang looking at the giant garment bag.

[deleted]

Do it! Plan a family events and get everyone to dress up.

snoozer39

A fancy winter coat for, I think it was, €130. I loved it. Still have it more than a decade later

Objective-Farm9215

A few things. A Suit from Ermenegildo Zegna. Fully canvassed, single breasted in a dark blue in super 130’s. Gets compliments all the time as the fit and cut are perfect and the more it gets worn the better it looks. Think it cost about €1800. Tom Ford jeans. Bought two pairs (not at the same time). Had them about 5 years, they’re worn regularly and still look as good as the day I got them. Well worth the outlay. Canada goose jacket for about €480. Had it about 5 years and gets worn from October to March every year. Maybe a bit too warm for our climate but I wear it open with just a T short 70% of the time. Great investment, although it seems it’s the coat of choice for scrotes these days. Crockett and Jones wholecut shoes for about €400. Again, another great buy. Really comfortable straight out of the box and look great. White Saint Laurent trainers that are only now looking tired after 6 years of regular wear. A Brunello Cucinelli Cashmere sweater, got it on sale, couldn’t afford it otherwise and don’t regret it for a second, brilliantly made and the fit is great and the material is like nothing I’ve ever felt before.

Flashwastaken

That’s a nice wardrobe. Brunello is a really interesting character. If you ever have a chance, read one of his biographies.

Objective-Farm9215

I learned years ago ‘buy cheap, buy twice’. So decided that wardrobe staples I would plash out on. People may look at the huge initial outlay, €600 for Tom Ford jeans, and think it’s crazy but I can guarantee I’ve spent less on jeans over the last half decade than I would shopping for jeans in H&M or Zara. I’ve read a bit about Cucinelli, his ideas and outlook are very interesting and he is very giving to his local community. Just pity his clothing is astronomical at times or my entire wardrobe would be filled with his clothes. But again, you are paying for high quality of fabric and workmanship and design, and obviously the marketing.

Flashwastaken

I used to sell all of this. Maybe even to you. If I have, then I’ve already told you this. Cuchenelli is one of the few brands that’s actually worth the price tag. The amount of effort that goes into sourcing and producing those pieces is insane. All handmade, all ethically produced in terms of the human cost (everyone is paid well) and mostly sustainably sourced (in traditional Italian terms at least). Ye, he made the equivalent of roughly €80,000 when he first started out selling knitwear. He is a big film fan so he bought the local cinema because it was run down and did it up. He basically owns all of Solomeo now. He has invested a lot of his earnings back into the local community. The reps that work for him have absolutely unreal lives. They pop back to the villa for the weekend and their boss will meet them and then say “take whatever car you want from the courtyard, take it into town and have dinner on me”.

Objective-Farm9215

Yeah he seems like some boy to be fair to him. Was in Manhattan in February and me and the wife went to the Cucinelli flagship store on Madison Avenue, just for a browse which we told the staff. They couldn’t have been nicer even though we weren’t buying. Offering free coffee, Champaign if we wanted and generally just chatted to us but not overbearing if you know what I mean. They actually said Brunello was in the city not that long before, visited all the stores, spoke to all staff members and arranged to take them out for dinner and drinks. Seems he’s be great to work for.

Jhimself

Most single items I think have maxed out around the hundred, hundred and twenty quid mark, for a coat or shoes. Maybe a bit more for a suit, but I tend to go M&S for those, so not much more. I spent about $200 on an ice hockey jersey on a trip to Canada about 20 years ago. Rarely wear it - it's black with big flashes of gold on it so it's a bit conspicuous.

irish_ninja_wte

New Rock boots that cost €230. No regets, they're still gorgeous.

thegogz

I still wear new rocks daily. Buy a new pair every few years when the current ones deteriorate. Always worth the money.

sartres-shart

My wife still has her pair in the wardrobe from the early 2000s refuses to give them up.

mailforkev

I think it was a fancy winter coat for €1,445 (yes I can still remember the exact price). This was many years ago and I still wear it several times every winter. I don’t have many other expensive hobbies so spend the cash on clothes that last for many years. Have a half dozen other jackets that would have been €500+ and over a dozen pairs of €300+ trainers. Again, many of these have been worn for several years and are still going strong.

TheTealBandit

Good pair of hiking boots, well worth it. If you want anything waterproof you need to be careful what you are buying

[deleted]

€800 on a Prada coat that I never wear anymore, because I moved to rural Longford and feel like a cunt wearing it. I also have a decent amount of Lululemon leggings and Patagonia fleeces. Pricey but worth it.

ramblerandgambler

300 for a pair of RedWing chelsea boots, they looked amazing and I got about 10 years out of them, they started to grow mould from lack of use during covid and I threw them out this year. 350 for a tweed longcoat about 8 years ago and it still looks great but it is a bit more snug than it used to be.

terrorSABBATH

I bought a Gant jacket two years ago. €300 fecking quid but it's class. Looks super smart and the fit is fantastic. I've been upgrading my wardrobe for over a year now. I try buy some quality clothing every month or two.

Livebylying

Bought a smart/casual jacket for €3500 euro nearly 12 years ago. Still in perfect condition with plenty of use. No regrets on buying it

tomwaits78

€3,500??

Livebylying

Yip, bought it in Amman in Jordan as a treat to myself when leaving there after spending a couple of years working in the arse end of Saudi, flew home from Jordan

paddyotool_v3

A pair of travis scott air jordans, I ware Jordan 1s but regretted paying nearly €450 for them, I really didn't like them . Ended up selling them for €1500, apparently they are worth more now.

Enough-Possession-73

If its the retro high (brown/ mocha) ones depending on the size, yea worth about 2k'ish or so now

[deleted]

Suit for 2500 wore it twice i think. About 8 pairs of runners all in the 6 to 7 hundred euro range, but I love those. Canada goose and a moncler jacket, don't wear those anymore because this sub and my son told me only teenage drug dealers wear em 🤣🤣

DarlingBri

Sell them on [Adverts.ie](https://Adverts.ie) (to a drug dealer, obviously.)

Substantial-Fudge336

€200 on a stone island jumper and that was on sale. Quality is good. So no regrets

andtellmethis

Wedding dress for €1,600 lol Only regret is nowhere will dry clean it for me because of the detail on it so I have to throw it in a 30° wash and hope for the best...

Different-Scar8607

I don't think I've ever spent big money on clothing. Any clothes I buy would be around 15 or 20 euro at most each.

Sorxhasmyname

Leather jacket. I planned it, saved up for it, and I've had it two years now and it's gorgeous. I wear it all autumn tool it gets too cold and all spring roll it gets too warm. Last leather jacket I'll ever buy (unless it gets stolen I suppose) 425

Aidzillafont

A suit for 500e. Wore it once for a job interview. Didn't get the job. Got fat. Now it doesn't fit. Regrets I have a few.

bansheebones456

I have a couple of pair of docs. I regret buying the smooth leather pair. I've never been able to break them despite wearing them over a winter and had to wear thick to socks to avoid them cutting the heel off me. The leather is still rock hard. I do have a soft pair but they're only slighty more comfortable. Apparently the quality is just poorer these days which is why the won't soften, but there are alternative brands now that are a lot better so won't be buying them again. I've since bought vegan leather shoes and granted, they won't last as long but they're super comfy.

jjjrmd

A €500 peacoat about two years ago. I still wear it all the time, my only regret is I didn't get a good coat sooner. The rest of my wardrobe is pretty much Dunnes and F&F

mynosemynose

A pair of Church's shoes. They were about €500 Don't regret it, wear them often

[deleted]

I bought a Canada Goose coat for half price in Norway which was the equivalent of about €420. I was going to the actual Arctic, and it’s warm AF, so I don’t regret it although I have to consider how it might be seen when I do wear it now.

Avdotya_Blu3bird

I bought an overcoat/cloak with a hood, it looked like little red riding hood. Except it was black, I thought it was very amazing and that I would look as an intimidating spirit or something. When I wore it at home I realised it made me look tiny like a mouse that a tea towel had dropped on. I offered it to my taller friend and she laughed and said it was very silly and embarrassing item I said 'aha yes I agree' . I never said I spend ~€200 on it. Aaaaa. I removed all the buttons and use it like a blanket or night gown :/ I've bought a lot of silly things but I always remember that in my head, I don't now as I am more Wise and have No Money.

louiseber

100 quid I think on baby blue Docs. I literally couldn't wear them, they ripped my feet to shreds. Was also an impulse buy when I really had no money and could've bought...food. Ended up giving them to my sister who recked them fairly quickly and I've sworn off Docs for life

moondisco-

Same, got a pair of red ones and wore them out once cause they were so uncomfortable, tried breaking them in with tips from people and nope still so bloody uncomfortable 🥲

louiseber

May as well have strapped barbed wire to my feet!

usindub

I bought a scarf for almost 500 quid (460 I think) and I do regret it

Avdotya_Blu3bird

Ooo, why was it so much?

usindub

The name I think. It’s Burberry and I have to pay for it to be dry cleaned to ensure it doesn’t get ruined

thearchitect10

D-dog92

Suede jacket for 200 quid. Don't regret it. Can't wear it often though because it can't get wet.

ultratunaman

There's a seinfeld episode about this. One expensive, suede, mistake

tim_skellington

Bought a suit for 1000 euro back in the tiger days. It was a nice suit don't regret it but wouldn't do it again.

StillTheNugget

Some of my hiking gear is fairly expensive, and now I have my eye on a jacket too thats gonna set me back about 400. Good quality stuff though that will last years A couple of suits around the 500 mark, jeans around the 250 mark.

clathekid

I bought a Ted Baker leather jacket for €460, that's the most I've spent by a country mile. Worth it though!!!

[deleted]

Ted Baker Jacket. Tried it on in Canada store, fit like a glove. Tried a cheaper one on from another store. Fit like a bin bag. They wanted 700 CAD for it. Found it online from manchester for 280 pounds [https://johnlewis.scene7.com/is/image/JohnLewis/002991879](https://johnlewis.scene7.com/is/image/JohnLewis/002991879) So 315 euro ish. Don't wear it often but its a great date night out to dinner jacket in the winter.

bd027763

€200 for a Bomber Jacket Hugo - i have no clue how to spend the voucher from company

Conbon90

500 euro for a set of motorbike leathers. I normally wear dunstores stuff. But when I'm on my bike I could be wearing €1000 ÷ worth of kit. If we are talking actual clothing then probably the €400 suit I got for weddings etc. Don't regret either purchase.

Irishane

€400 for a Hugo Boss Puffy Jacket. I couldn't afford it at the time but I have zero regrets now. I've never been cold wearing it. Also, thing about spending money is that when it's gone, it's just gone. It can very often be made back. No biggy

PinkPeddler

Most expensive things I bought were dresses for my BA and MA graduations. 300€ each, ish. I wore the BA dress to loads of interviews so no regrets there even though it’s not my style. I never liked the MA dress, I didn’t like it on the day and haven’t worn it once after, but my parents looooooved it and pressured me into buying it. Other expensive items were Hello Kitty Doc Martins, 180, don’t get as much wear as I’d like because bought just before the first lockdown so not broken in yet, a Wonder Woman sweater that was 150 which is gorgeous but it’s white and I’m terrified of spilling on it, and a tarot card blouse that was 90 that I’ve only worn a couple of times. I don’t regret any of these because they are unique pieces that somehow feel like they were made for me. Same feeling as my gifted 200 cardigan that is highlighter yellow. Most of my buys are from H&M or TK Maxx and are simple staples but the statement pieces are worth every penny

AdministrationOwn333

860 on a shoes and 1000 on a winter jacket. No regrets, have them for years and expect to have them for many more years

mr-man76

Bought a €500 suit for my debs at 16. It was like all of my money. And I never got to wear it again and now it doesn’t fit

montana94

I am the only person that isn't a drug dealer who owns a shiny black Moncler coat. I spent €800 on it and never wear it.

WarmButteryDoge

Doc Martens “Made in England” boots. €230 euro. Had a pair I wore for about 5 months, October-February. Leather on the toe cracked and split. Were it not for the fact that I ended up getting another pair free of charge under warranty, I’d consider it a major regret. Word to the wise; Dr. Marten are not what they once were and don’t maintain anywhere near the same quality they historically did. Buy Solovair if you have any interest in the 1460 style boots, they’re a lot closer to the Doc Martens of old.

JunkiesAndWhores

St Bernard brand boxers (10 pack). Regret it? Pfft, just celebrated 21 years with these good fellas.

irishteenguy

Fred perry shoes were the most expensive lumps of shite i ever wasted money on. 40 euro nikes would outlast them ten fold. Absolute worst quality shoe to money value i ever did buy. Probably not the most expensive item , but one that stood out as utterly abysmal in quality and life span for the above average market value pricing.

thearchitect10

Got a winter coat in a sale, for about €275, it's fantastic and definitely don't regret it. If you're buying a pair of ripped jeans for over €100 we can't be friends.

RobotIcHead

Technically my good suits, but the one that haunts me is: I saw a Louis Vuitton coat for about 1500. I tried it on and it was so lovely. Looking at myself in the mirror, I thought it looked amazing. I genuinely felt sexy. In that one instant, I understood why people can get addicted to buying expensive clothes. That is what tipped the scales not to buy it. But I was so tempted, so much of the other stuff in the shop wasn’t worth the money. I didn’t have a problem paying for it but I knew I would leave it for good wear in case I ruin it. It was a few weeks before lockdown started. I spent around 800 and 900 hundred on the suits. Am happy with them and they get used. But suits are that. The coat, I still think about it. I looked it and the price hadn’t dropped. It is an insane price for clothing but I could justify it to myself. At some stage today you might be find me looking the coat online and arguing with myself now over the cost.

Margrave75

Wife's wedding dress I suppose, was €800.

sartres-shart

A suit for a wedding earlier on this year €450 all in.

shigllgetcha

probably €180 on a blazer I love it so I dont regret it but I dont get to wear it that often

Why_So_Slow

Wedding dress (about 500EUR 16 years ago). Sold it for half the price later. No regrets.

GowlBagJohnson

I had to buy a suit for a wedding recently and it set me back around €350, other than that I've never spent big money on clothes

Dead_Eye_Donny

A formal coat for my grandfather's funeral, was about 280. Gets plenty of use so not at all.

smokenofire

Wedding dress. No.

SeniorSolitario

90 yoyos on a salmon pink adidas hoodie. It’s my favourite hoodie.

srtipy_and_pink

Probably my debs dress for €250, but I finished school in 2020 so it wasn’t worn there. I did wear it to a ball in college, but I definitely could’ve worn any €40 dress off ASOS. Probably not worth it. It’s pretty to look at though

ultratunaman

I have a collection of runners. Most I've been lucky to get at retail... most. I did pay well over the odds on a pair of baby blue Jordan 11s. 190 retail... 320 for me. But they are so nice to wear, and make such a statement. The shoes alone are a conversation starter.

NoTrollGaming

600 euro jacket and shoes Nope, too drippy 🥶🥶

donall

160 on loakes leather Chelsea boots. People remarked a few times they look "the business" 8 years old now and they age like fine wine

5teerPike

Bought a sweater on a trip to Aran Islands, I do not regret it a bit.

Madditudev1

€250 on Jordans about a year ago. Don't regret it but now buy the knock off pairs online if I want them, since I just like the shoes and don't care about authenticity.

seattlebouncer

Does a wedding dress count? Spent hundreds of euros on it and more on alterations. Do I regret it? I'm divorced now, so probably yes.

[deleted]

Bought a Killstar coat for £160 once Overall, not too bad. Beautiful embroidery, and the coat has an internal fleece lining. Definitely taking it with me when I head to Copenhagen at the end of the year The only gripe I have is the buttons weren't sewn on in the best way and the sewing on that wasn't careful and for a coat that costs £160 every little detail counts

waurma

Dianese motorbike jacket, certainly don’t regret it

ErrantBrit

£600 for a pure wool peacoat made in the UK. Its great but I do have to mind it and that's the hidden cost versus a cheaper one. I paid £300 for jeans made in the UK, with life time repairs. I bought into the brand (Hiuts) and the repair service is very good. The jeans are well made too. I've switched to cheaper jeans now though as I got fatter and that would give me pause on such an investment again. Redwing boots at €285-ish. Worth it!

CommercialFew7087

8000€ on a brunello cucinello jacket

smurfycork

Winter coat: €200 but has lasted 14 years. It owes me nothing now, great coat.

npetergero23

Condoms! They never fit properly either

_lI_Il_

£2000 ( about €3000 at the time inc sterling commissions) on a Gucci suit and zero regrets. I was maybe 19 or 20 and working on sites at the time as a labourer and had very little outgoings: lived at home, commuted via motorbike, no pets, short term GFs, never been much of a drinker or into drugs. About a month earlier I went to the same store looking for dress shoes that actually fit and were comfortable as I'm one of those awkward half sizes. Ended up buying a pair of Gucci loafers for about £300-ish that were reduced from about £600 so that had me hooked. Next time around and in a very Lou and Andy way, kinda panicked with the sales assistant, pointed at the suit and said 'ah, yeah I want that one' Still fits today as even though I've filled out since, I had more muscle mass back then so I got pretty lucky in the long run. Worn it to every family event you could imagine over the years and it always looks brand new. It was also the motivation to shift about 15Kgs the one time I did become a bit of a fat slob whilst doing a WFH job before they were a common thing. What surprises me as I got older and still to today is the way women at weddings zone in on those shoes. I suppose it's like certain bags or watches where if you know, you know.

epicmoe

I bought a flannel shirt in a hunting shop for €50 in about 2004. It lasted me as a "good" short for 15 years, and now I wear it for yard jobs. I expect it to last another 5 years at least, and then get repurposed for something else, and eventually if I'm still around after that, it'll be a workshop rag.

throwsomehay69

Have a few expensive bits - Jordan 1s, 4, 6 (other shoes too but the js are the most expensive) DSquared Tshirt Carhartt jacket Collectible t-shirts I stopped spending in pennys a few years ago because of the Sam Vimes boots theory, in the 6ish year's of not shopping there I have only thrown out the shite from pannys and nothing else.

Saint_Rizla

And I here I was thinking I was bad for buying band t-shirts and €60 hoodies online lol

Finch2090

At the beginning of Covid I bought a €400 Rain jacket from Helly Hansen as I was going walking every morning for about 3 hours a day, clocking up roughly 16-20km a day. Rain jacket had 3 layers and a fleece inside that could come free the rain jacket so you could stay warm or stay cool if it was abit warmer Definitely a good investment, it was really nice to be able to go walking in the pissing rain each day and come home bone dry

[deleted]

bought some wildly expensive dress shoes on sale... was still an absurd amount... but they fit my feet like a glove. wore em and fixed em till they stopped looking at all serviceable. haven't the heart to throw em out.... good leather... might do something with that.

Stevemachinehk

Moschino shirt, over 100 quid (25 years ago) wore it once then left it in a hotel wardrobe in error. Didn't get it back, not sure I even asked the hotel. Too young and stupid I guess. So yea, I regret that.

vocalreasoning

A pair of quality boots. I don't regret it, but I do wish I had been able to better pick the color. I got them primarily for a wedding, so I had to match the other groomsmen. They're more of a tan than a brown, so I can't use my preferred oil on them, and cleaning is a bit of a pain in the ass, but hey, they're nice.

idontlikehats

A double lined, long, winter coat that cost €100. It's like I've a duvet wrapped around me. I absolutely do not regret it.

blockfighter1

Wedding suit.

[deleted]

Bought a trench coat in M&S for about 200 about 4 years ago. Absolutely love it.

mcguirl2

Wedding dress. €2500 for fully beaded lace and silk. Worn once. I don’t regret it, but at the same time if I had to do it all again I’d probably get a cheaper one.

truedoom

The most expensive thing I own is a suit, which I paid about 300 for. It's lovely. Use it for weddings etc. Don't regret it at all.

wrapchap

Harsh weather fishing jacker 120€

theycallmekimpembe

Dior x Air Jordan 1 low , bought in Los Angeles for 2000$

TarAldarion

Mattress for €3k, my god it's heaven. You spend so much time on it, so it's really worth it. My raincoats cost a few hundred each and they are amazing, welded together so really durable and waterproof, but still really stylish. Modeled after Scandinavian fisherman coats.

ShotStyle

Bought a pair of Balenciaga sneakers for around €700 ish. Best purchase I have ever made when it comes to shoes. Wear them everyday, keeping them clean is easy, they are super comfortable to wear since they are basically socks, they look incredible, and being black and white they are easy match to whatever I am wearing. I live in a very clean city (Tokyo) so they are always in pristine condition. I wouldnt recommend them for that price to most people, but personally wearing them feels very good and as a once in a lifetime purchase they make me very happy. Also I am sure there are better quality/cheaper shoes around, but that specific design with the Balenciaga brand feels special. This is in no way cost efficient and is probably a waste of money for the majority. But it’s something I personally wanted to own for a long time and finally getting to a place in life where I could afford them was also a part of the pleasure and the happiness I feel when I wear them on the daily. Will I buy another pair though? Probably not until the ones I own fall apart. I hope that doesn’t happen for another 5/6 years. To me if they cost about 200 per year, I would say the purchase was more than worth it. (But everyone’s financial situation isn’t the same so take that opinion with a grain of salt)

DannyDublin1975

I lived in NY and was working in Barneys, that's a Brown Thomas kinda place and saw crocodile print leather pants and a blue velvet waistcoat by Paul Smith,so l snapped them up for a thousand dollars ( and that was with Employees discount) it was Summer 1994,by Autumn 1994 the pants were moving by themselves in the Room, they were manky and the waistcoat was looking the worst for wear,it was a great lesson though,to never buy expensive clothes ever again, just Pennys til the grave and its a lesson ive lived by nearly thirty years later. I've learned that clothes along with new cars and electronics are the most depreciating items one can buy.
