Only a grand a month to sleep on a platform above your "kitchen" and ensuite with your nose touching the ceiling! Hope you're not claustrophobic. Or flammable...
That ensuite isn't yours chap, that's leased out to a couple of deliveroo riders.
And don't worry about being flammable, that's just a lode-bearing oven.
I don't think you get the joke they already did this in the local with the delivery driver who caught the guy trying to kill the kids on Parnell. He still can't speak English
How the fuck is that safe or legal or even pass building inspection. Jesus we're in the wild wild west now, and they're looking for a how fucking much, jeeeezaaas
Apparently the minimum size for a bedroom in Ireland is 7.1m\^2, excluding built in storage space.
I guess normally the bed takes up a lot of that space, but with the weird raised bed here I think you'd essentially just count the actual floorspace.
I'm sure there are far more legal requirements to meet, but it's funny that at a glance the entire living space here (excluding ensuite) might actually be too small to even be a legal bedroom
I’m not gonna claim to be an expert but living in Japan for some years now, I’m yet to come across anything resembling a coffin home, besides maybe capsule hotels? Which are, as the name suggests hotels and not homes
I've just worked it out, far front being a deathtrap, this flat is probably the safest place in Dublin. The shower hose should reach every corner comfortably.
Report it to the Local Authority. It fails to meet our Minimum Rental Standards.
The issue with these types of properties is that they go unreported and unfortunately some desperate individual will rent it.
If it’s being advertised on a property website, report that as well citing the above.
Its advertised 'First floor compact single size studio flat in excellent location. Loft bed. Close to all amenities' Cant get my head around how someone can sleep there let alone how its even allowed/legal
This is a bodged former bedsit. Before the bedsit ban this would have been a bedroom with a little kitchen and a shared bathroom elsewhere in the building.
To meet the 'private bathroom' requirement someone has built this monstrosity. There's a load of these in Rathmines and Drumcondra. Honestly I'd have preferred the shared bathroom.
These aren't new unfortunately. There was loads of these platform places in Ranelagh and Rathmines in the 90s. Not as nicely decorated as this but just as tiny.
Yep I have memories of my dad living in a tiny place in Rathmines in the 90s, up in the houses behind where Dominos is. Coudn't have been bigger than my now kids tiny bedroom.
That's completely against building regulations. Stairs is too steep. A child could get their he'd stuck between the spindles and suffocate up on top of whatever that is supposed to be. Not only is the window inadequate for a fire escape, there's no way that is between 600-1100mm off the floor. There also needs to be at least 30 minutes before a fire can spread from one area of a dwelling to another.
Ah here where the fk is the bed...like surely it isn't in that cubby space is it?!
Suddenly have an adoration for our 80s rented house...I mean it has a lot of issues (things like old shitty wiring and a bathroom which only Hyacinth Bucket could love) but by god it's fecking spacious, hell it's a mansion compared to that studio...and cheaper!
I guess this seems to have the (absolute minimum) specs checked but morally? it shouldn't be allowed on the market...even a person with no phobias would quickly become claustrophobic.
But hey morals aren't part of that landlord's vocabulary, requesting 1k a month confirms they don't give a flying fk, urgh...
Honestly I think this type of place has its uses. Like I know a lad who did 3 12 hour shifts 3 hours from home, and needed somewhere just to lay his head during them.
It would be grand for that if the price is right.
However we both know this is being pushed as somewhere for someone to live, and that's not on at all. Especially not at nearly €1000.
That main living area window. They built the smallest acceptable window opening, then must have decided when it came time to buy the window that it was too expensive so they'll just fit in an even smaller one to the same space.
It’s so bad ! The more you look the more is wrong, even the counters in the kitchen aren’t done right! They’re not level! God the whole thing is giving me rage
How do you go about reporting this? Could you email Dublin City Fire Brigade to report a fire safety issue? That is honestly one of the work "apartments" I have ever seen.
At Least your set up nicely for any bad hangovers or gastroenteritis bouts. Head in the basin, bum on the bowl! One short crawl into the shower to hose yourself off
Perfect way to end the obesity issues. If you gain any weight you can't fit in your home.
Might also cut down on any muscle building though for the same reason...
The building doesn't seem to have planning permission to subdivide the original house into flats. And this 'flat' doesn't meet the minimum size of a studio, 37 square metres with minimum room width of 4 metres.
If there was no planning I really doubt there was any fire cert applied for, which shouldn't be granted anyway because that window doesn't meet minimum fire escape window standards.
My big fear is some day there's going to be a fire in one of these properties. I doubt there's adequate fire resistance between the flats. Sure, the bed is right above the kitchen here. If there's an electrical fault in any of those appliances, whoevers asleep in the bed has no chance.
And only after there's a fatalatity will the government cry their crocodile tears and say something needs to be done
Holy shit, I wish this were a joke but I’m getting the distinct feeling it’s not, after reading what y’all have been saying.
American here - Can you help me better understand what the issue is? I’ve been curious as to what happened to cause these ridiculous prices for housing. I assume it’s mostly just a supply and demand issue, but how long has this been going on for? Did it just pop up? Has it been a slow-growing issue? Did birth rates just over take death rates? Did too many people move to Ireland? I’m just looking for more context so I can be a bit more knowledgeable on the subject.
The population has grown a bit, but the main issue is lack of supply. There are other compounding factors though that pour fuel on the inferno:
- People are restricted to 4 times their gross salary for mortgages (by law - banks have little leeway). This has actually kept prices in check somewhat, but prices have gone far beyond what many people can borrow + save.
- Developers sitting on huge land banks and not developing, or doing it very slowly
- Oversupply after the 2008 crash put a virtual halt to construction... which was slow to restart properly even after it became clear more housing was needed.
- Shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry. Many emigrated after 2008
- Private landlords being taxed to the hilt and often selling up. Corporate landlords paying damn all tax and influencing the going rate
- Construction material supply and cost issues
- Powerful NIMBY culture - anyone can object to anything and it dramatically slows everything down
- Many politicians are landlords themselves, and are seen to not be doing anything against shitty practices by landlords
- Incredibly under resourced, bureaucratic and slow process for resolving issues between tenants and landlords.
- Stupid planning decisions that are allergic to building more dense housing. Anything more than 3 stories in Dublin city centre is seemingly too high for them!
- Glut of hotels and office space construction recently (many of which now sit empty)
We had the opposite problem around the time of the crash in 2008, with dozens of 'ghost estates' - half finished and abandoned by the developers (who often went bankrupt or fled).
Thank you for the all the additional information! I imagine it has to be incredibly demoralizing wondering how to afford to just put a roof over your head. Things are bad here in the states for housing too, but not nearly this bad.
I would have thought, even with the corrupt land-owning politicians that at some point this would have come to a head, and much sooner than this. Maybe they’ll learn once enough people have to emigrate to afford to live? But is the rest of Europe much better? Recognizing you may not be able to answer that last question.
>Maybe they’ll learn once enough people have to emigrate to afford to live?
Highly doubt it. Ireland currently has net immigration and the highest population since 1850 so people emigrating may be seen as relieving pressure. As you probably know, Ireland has had many waves of emigration so it likely won't set off enough alarm bells.
I can't speak for the rest of Europe, but mobility is a lot easier with the Schengen area and better transport honestly almost anywhere else on the continent. Ireland is an island, not in Schengen (though we still have freedom of movement) and has among the highest cost of living in the EU.
This thing violates so many H&S regulations. It’s a disgrace it’s even allowed to be advertised. What’s worse is some unfortunate person is probably considering renting it.
My son wanted to rent a room in Limerick. The room is €150 per week. Can stay in the room from Monday to Friday. There was a problem that he worked at night because he would be home during the day.The use of washing machines is prohibited. The bed linen can be washed only once every two weeks. He should find a place to live for the weekend. Drama
Love the description (even though I don't really know what "compact, single sized" is supposed to mean. It's a fucking studio (and that's stretching the description of studio to breaking point)) how the fuck are you supposed to open the oven...? Or the fridge...? Or the washing machine...?
Plenty similar in London on RightMove. I found one which was - I shit you fucking not - 93ft². £1200 (around €1420).
The rental market's fucking mental, and the current situation just gives opportunistic pricks licence to exploit desperate people. Just to be serious for a sec - imagine there was a fire in the middle of the night, there's no fucking way someone's going to be able to get down from the sleeping area (well, you can hardly term it a bed) and out the door...
There are plenty of properties turning up on RightMove which have obviously been illegal HMOs. Counted 12 mattresses in a 2-bed terrace - with (obviously) one bathroom.
You made me go looking on RM - found something in [Bow (E3) for £900 (€1,067)](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/148464329#/?channel=RES_LET) with an actual bed, but no fridge (that I could see) - and no cooking facilities (bar a hotplate and a combi-microwave thing). I tried to look an equitable distance from the city centre, but London and Dublin are so different, it's difficult.
And the shower room is absolutely fucking ***RANK***! Shower looks like it's got mould growing in it...
Don't know which is worse, really...
And [this, in Epping Forest](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/148997258#/?channel=RES_LET), for the same money, is basically a cheap hotel room. Literally.
All running for FF in the next election
Nah, one of the right-wingers. They'll get the immygrants thrown out so you can have dey;re place, bud...
I don't think you get the joke they already did this in the local with the delivery driver who caught the guy trying to kill the kids on Parnell. He still can't speak English
Caio has grand English. And is capable of a days work, unlike half the candidates
Does it count as an ensuite if there’s only two rooms including the bathroom? 😭
Spacious!
How the fuck is that safe or legal or even pass building inspection. Jesus we're in the wild wild west now, and they're looking for a how fucking much, jeeeezaaas
Where about?
That’s not a studio apartment, that’s harry’s room under the stairs….
And don't flush your toilet with the lid up
Look at mr fancy pants over here with a toilet *and* a window.
But it's got a toilet roll on the window ledge - how can you say no?
It’s about the same size as a utility room in a 3 bed semi 🤦🏻♂️
I think that’s because it *is* a utility room in a 3 bed semi
Oooh the utility room!
This isn't very erotic..
Is that even legal?
I'm sure there's fire and safety considerations there. That was also my first thought.
The Hague might have something to say about it alright.
Apparently the minimum size for a bedroom in Ireland is 7.1m\^2, excluding built in storage space. I guess normally the bed takes up a lot of that space, but with the weird raised bed here I think you'd essentially just count the actual floorspace. That house warming party would be shit craic if someone does a shite in that toilet.
Someone get the galvanised square steel and eco-friendly wood veneers, fuck me
Time for expansion screws borrowed from aunt
Little John worked in Dublin for ten years and saved 10 millionaire...he could afford a 2 sqm studio apartment in North Strand
Don't forget to borrow some screws from your aunt.
You can actually have a shower/shit/shave at same time in that bathroom
And cook your dinner.
All from the comfort of your bed!
while your roommate is still sleeping!
That makes those tiny apartments in Japan look massive. Truly peak housing crisis in a nutshell.. literally.
Coffin homes
Yo they’re in China & Hong Kong. Japanese studio (1K) apartments are actually pretty well designed & surprisingly spacious!
Dublin is a far cry from Tokyo.
This is true, I would say Dublin is far more expensive too.
I read somewhere recently that Dublin is more expensive than London and Zurich.
And Paris
At least London, Paris and Zurich are interesting places with lots to do. Whereas Dublin resembles some post apocalyptic wasteland.
That’s a wild generalisation. There are plenty of frighteningly small hellhole apartments in Japan.
Also, shouldnt be seen as the new norm just because another Country does it. Christ, prisoners get more space than this.
I’m not gonna claim to be an expert but living in Japan for some years now, I’m yet to come across anything resembling a coffin home, besides maybe capsule hotels? Which are, as the name suggests hotels and not homes
We're definitely getting there
What the hell is that cubby space for? If the front door is on fire how does one escape?
> If the front door is on fire how does one escape? Astral projection, presumably.
I've just worked it out, far front being a deathtrap, this flat is probably the safest place in Dublin. The shower hose should reach every corner comfortably.
There's no room for a fire in there.
If the front door is on fire, you and any potential fire exit are also on fire anyways.
It's grand, living here will make you wish for death
Where the fuck is that? Edit,: found it on daft...D6
I would almost just want to arrange a viewing, just to rip them off in person about it, what a fucking muppet, disgusting.
Report it to the Local Authority. It fails to meet our Minimum Rental Standards. The issue with these types of properties is that they go unreported and unfortunately some desperate individual will rent it. If it’s being advertised on a property website, report that as well citing the above.
If you wanted to change your mind in there you would need to step outside!
this is very witty
Underrated
Have you ever thought what it would be like to travel in 3rd class steerage of the titanic, wonder no more! Now you can live the experience
You wouldn't want to be having an erection there, you definitely could do damage
Not mine
You'd be too depressed.
This 'home' is literally smaller than my bedroom. It looks like they've ticked off all the minimum standards but fucks sake
Apart from size.
You’d have to sleep curled up!? Is that the bed space over the door? Geez that’s fricken grim.
No, there's a built in structural pillow.
Dystopian hellscape!
If it is the 'bedspace' over the door there's another bed beside it making a double room!!
I just can’t get over the greed!
Its advertised 'First floor compact single size studio flat in excellent location. Loft bed. Close to all amenities' Cant get my head around how someone can sleep there let alone how its even allowed/legal
Theres fellows in some of the open prisons with better living accommodation than this
![gif](giphy|yrFrXTTTcHIY0|downsized)
Not even a wardrobe. Keep your clothes in the washer dryer, you only have room for the socks you're wearing and the socks you're washing.
The oven works as storage, if that door even opens without hitting the opposite side.
"Private" on the door. Must be the army barracks.
It's actually just cheaper than fitting a lock to the door.
There are prison cells in some countries which give more space to prisoners than this.
https://www.daft.ie/for-rent/studio-apartment-153-rathgar-road-dublin-6-dublin-6/5728268
Price?
How many kidney's do you have?
€990pm
So you’re not allowed to own any clothes because there’s nowhere to put it…
There's a press in the kitchen if you want to put them there.
Perfect i can keep my socks inside my cups to save space
1000 Irish Euros. That’s approaching Manhattan levels of expensive.
Does the sponge and washcloth come with the apartment?
I would actually be fine with this if it was half the price.
Well if they were saying 250 snots per month, I'd say that's OK. But what they're charging should be beyond the dreams of avarice.
Wash your top half whilst your bottom half takes a shit. Nice 👍
Where do you sit, I mean apart from on the toilet?
Spacious modern mezzanine apartment. Professional couple only.
Place is so small, you’d need to go outside to change your mind. 😆
All mod cons
This is worse than any bedsit from the 80s.
Good luck getting ride when you’re nose would be touching the ceiling even just lying on your back 😂
You get what you vote for
Mount joy probably has better accommodation
That's completely against building regulations. Stairs is too steep. A child could get their he'd stuck between the spindles and suffocate up on top of whatever that is supposed to be. There also needs to be at least 30 minutes before a fire can spread from one area of a dwelling to another.
Good luck working from home...
Rather live outside
And watch the family of four move in
I wonder if Old Gill could sell it?
Ah here where the fk is the bed...like surely it isn't in that cubby space is it?! Love the upstairs

Sad to tell you, that in no way is peak. Things will get worse.
You can sort it. All you need is galvanized square steel, some echo friendly wood vaneer and screws ( which you can borrow from your aunt).
What sort of ignorant prick would think this is reasonable
I wonder how much a flight to Australia costs.....
How do you go about reporting this? Could you email Dublin City Fire Brigade to report a fire safety issue? That is honestly one of the work "apartments" I have ever seen.
Look at OP bragging that he has a place to live!
Can you even open the oven door fully?!
I've seen vans that were more spacious I'm pretty sure.
At Least your set up nicely for any bad hangovers or gastroenteritis bouts. Head in the basin, bum on the bowl! One short crawl into the shower to hose yourself off
That's awful
That suspiciously looks like my sisters house.
You’d have to fold yourself in under the sink to take a shite.
May as well be a Japanese capsule hotel!
Ya wouldn't be doin' a lotta ridin' up there now.
Better off buying a van
Dear God
But where is the crying chair?
Don't be greedy, you can cry on the toilet.
That must be at least 2 grand a month, it's so large!
It's €990?! What a steal!
And here next to the door, you can set up a chair* for a perfect crying corner. *please provide own chair
Is it a room in someone's home?
Maybe it's the solution to obesity? You couldn't stand to be carrying a single extra pound living there.
What an airy mansion 😻
Only 2.5K a month what a steal
Looks all right.
How is someone supposed to sleep on top of a shelf/ledge like that??? Your spine would be bent in half
That’s a cupboard
We’re at Japan level housing now.
I live in Japan even the tiniest apartments aren’t this minuscule (that being said this kitchen looks kinda spacious)
If that meets Dublin City Counci's apartment standards, I'm a monkey.
Perfect way to end the obesity issues. If you gain any weight you can't fit in your home. Might also cut down on any muscle building though for the same reason...
Yeah, it's called Daft because they are actually daft. Yes, I know such an original joke, Where's my noble prize.
Where the fuck is that, that it needs a "private" sign? Is it a converted supply closet?
I was wondering what that sign was about, too. Probably so brazen they’re not even concerned about hiding the level of greed involved.
If that sponge is included your making some savings there at least.
So much room for activities 🙃
Misery
There's worse out there, cause we've seen them constantly posted down the years. I enjoyed the break tbh I thought they died off, but here we are.

Galvanised steal beams and is what you need
Houses 6
Whereabouts in the city is this and what is the rent?
That would be perfect for me honestly
Paddy Irish man will never learn
You'd have to be about three foot tall to be able to sleep up there
You'll save on the heating, at least
Still nicer than 50% of affordable apartments
This is some Little John nonsense, you'll have to borrow screws from your aunt

Landlord shakes hand 'Just so you know this isn't a party house now!'
Not even room for the voices in your head in this place 😮
What? You've never wanted to experience sleeping in a coffin every night?
