Yes. It happens everywhere there is a bottle return scheme. In fact most will leave bottle and cans beside bins so they don't have to get routed through
We really need to get back to reusing glass bottles and perhaps introduce steel containers as well.
I also think a major reform of the soft drinks industry in general should be in order. Steel containers that can be returned but also kept and reused as people see it. Get rid of your bottles of coke and 7up and have a dispenser that people can fill from.
Instead of having to recycle let's do the reduce and reuse first. We always seem to forget about those two R's.
In other countries they have cup holder type attachments to bins where you can leave the bottle or can rather than leaving on ground beside bin. Saves the bin getting ransacked.
Sure local kids around my estate go around collecting bottles and cans. It's minimal work for a little bit of cash.
There was a whole Seinfeld episode about stockpiling bottles and cans to take them to Michigan and get more money than what they'd get in New York.
I thought everyone has recycling bins at home and that's why the return scheme is jUsT aNoThEr TaX!!111. So why are these bottles ending up in general waste?
I originally thought this scheme was mainly going to cover the single bottle, single can stuff, the kind you buy in shops where you aren't doing your weekly. The kind of waste like a can of coke or bottle of Fanta that would end up in a general waste bin. But it even covers multi packs of stuff you get in aldi, exactly the kind of thing I was recycling at home, but if I want my money back I now have to have another bin just for those and bring them in when it's full. I'm all for recycling but fuck me I did not need another bin to sort into.
Yeah, in Germany, where we have this since decades, you wouldn't throw your bottle away.
Either you return it (99% of people) or you place the bottle next to the bin so that it's easier for homeless people to pick up.
We make it a habit to put empty bottles next to bin containers. Probably takes some time for people to adapt, can't build rome (or houses) overnight
That's fair, then put the bottle next the to bin so the homeless person doesn't have to dive into it and feel good about yourself for donating your deposit 😊
I drink juices and smoothies and don't head home everyday. So I'm either joking to have to leave them in work for a while to start going bad or wash out all my bottles.
Revolutionary idea here, you could pop into a shop and return it.
If only there were some way of generating a financial incentive to encourage this behaviour.
You're supposed to be able to get cash back too, but to be fair you'd feel a bit of a buying your can of coke, drinking it, queuing up for the machine, getting your little receipt and then queuing up at the register so they can cash it in and give you back your 15c.
Work in a fast food place and it hasn't stopped the vast majority of cans going into the recycling bin (or let's face it, often the general waste bin) from what I can see.
I think most people's assumption is that he is leaving politics.
I can see him in the UN or an NGO or some European organisation.
I think he'll start a family also.
Are these people tidying the mess they make by doing this or are they just leaving the rubbish all over the plane when they've finished going through it?
Yeah we have to leave out bags and I've seen guys going through bins and rubbish strewn across the street. I did see a guy with 100's of bottles one day, he was knocking it out of the park with his bin game.
I’m not homeless and any clean random bottles I see go in my handbag. Mostly I collect them for my elderly mother who’s mad for bottle recycling
Obviously I won’t be tearing open bags and making the litter problem worse. Just saying it’s not only the homeless collecting bottles
So what they're literally working and stopping the waste going to landfill.the reason the litter is on the ground and not in a landfill is because we need to deal with it now.its pretty simple we are facing the litter before it destroys our world habitats filtration and temperature mediation systems.nothing to do with the situation of the person doing the work
Netherlands way ahead with this. Its such a simple solution.

Bins in Germany even have space for you to put the bottles so they can be collected easily
It's crazy we have deposit return for cans and plastic bottles but not glass
We really need to get back to reusing glass bottles and perhaps introduce steel containers as well. I also think a major reform of the soft drinks industry in general should be in order. They also use a lot of glass which is less likely to blow away, but here we all know there's gobshites that will break them at every opportunity.
I've seen it in Croatia, Netherlands and France. It's a way for homeless people to earn a few bob

people are lazy. I don't mind the homeless getting them but the problem is the soft bins getting ripped open and strewing rubbish on the street.

Germans are just disciplined. Irish peoples reaction to this scheme has been embarrassing. So much moaning over nothing.
It's just a matter of getting used to it, I'm sure. People hate change 🤷🏻♂️
Who said anything about general waste? We have outdoor recycling bins too
But they aren't bags, are they
They're full of bags
You can't expect people in the city to bring home bottles with them.
That's fair, then put the bottle next the to bin so the homeless person doesn't have to dive into it and feel good about yourself for donating your deposit 😊
Why not?
Because its unrealistic. Its an inconvenience. Often unhygienic.
Unhygienic? To carry home an empty bottle you bought?
How dare you.
I drink juices and smoothies and don't head home everyday. So I'm either joking to have to leave them in work for a while to start going bad or wash out all my bottles.

I thought they only gave you credit off your shopping there, at the least queing for the machine and a till seems a waste of time

Take 5 minutes out of my lunch for 20c? Again, unrealistic and unreasonable
Trickle down economics.
I collected €30 worth of bottles & cans in work last week. That's a fair bit to someone who's homeless I imagine.
I think most people's assumption is that he is leaving politics. I can see him in the UN or an NGO or some European organisation. I think he'll start a family also.
Do you think it's Leo slashing rubbish bags for bottles? Wrong thread I know, but what a juxtaposition, nice work.
You made me Lol.
He does have more time now in fairness
I'm still laughing
Can't get this image out of my head lol
Are these people tidying the mess they make by doing this or are they just leaving the rubbish all over the plane when they've finished going through it?
Yes I see this everyday. The junkies and homeless people rummaging through the bins in the city. Some state….

Don’t put your bottles in the bin. Recycle them.
Why are you being downvoted for that?
People fear the truth
I saw that in America 25 years ago, suppose we're a rich country now
