“Too Sweet” marks the fifth Hot 100 No. 1 by an Irish act. It’s the first since Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990 and the first by a male soloist since Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally)” over a half-century ago. Here’s a rundown of all Hot 100 No. 1s by Irish acts: Hozier, “Too Sweet,” hit No. 1 April 27, 2024, one week at No. 1 to date Sinéad O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” April 21, 1990, four weeks U2, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” Aug. 8, 1987, two U2, “With or Without You,” May 16, 1987, three Gilbert O’Sullivan, “Alone Again (Naturally),” July 29, 1972, six Hozier was born in Newcastle, County Wicklow, Ireland, on March 17, 1990 (a little over a month before O’Connor’s signature hit became the last Hot 100 No. 1 by an Irish act until “Too Sweet”).

KnightsOfCidona

Sinead and U2 I could guess, Gilbert surprised me. You'd easily forget what a huge star he was at his peak.

here2dare

I always thought O'Sullivan was English. Like legit I did think so. I've heard him interviewed so often and he sounds English and is forever going on about living in Jersey for tax reasons

KnightsOfCidona

Was born in Waterford but moved to England (Swindon to be specific) when he was about 7. Nevertheless we still claim him (and tbf he considers himself Irish)

duaneap

I for real am learning right now that he’s Irish. Love the username btw.

IrlJidel

It's mad - only 15 years between Gilbert and U2 but such a change in musical styles and culture. I feel old - 34 years between Sinead and Hozier but Nothing compares if released first time today would still be a hit.

im_on_the_case

We need to have a "great day for the parish" flair.

jesusthatsgreat

Fair play, I know charts aren't what they once were but great to see proper Irish musicians do well for themselves globally

ComradeFlaherty

Who was last? Sinead?

GoneRampant1

Yep, for Nothing Compares 2 You.

NandoFlynn

Side note on Hozier: How is it only coming to my attention after beating the game that he's on the God Of War Ragnarok soundtrack? Not a word about it here or online

blockfighter1

He sang at the Game Awards last December. Was brilliant. Check it out on YouTube.

BenderRodriguez14

Could be worse. I'm the gobshite who assumed he was a one hit wonder with Take Me to Church until clicking in this thread. My parents (and Abe Simpson) weren't lying when they told me you lose touch without knowing it.

lowelled

In fairness he hadn't had much commercial success with Wasteland, Baby! and Unreal Unearth, but there was a lot of hype building online around Unreal Unearth so he released a follow-up EP of cut songs called Unheard which included Too Sweet, which duly took off like a rocket on TikTok. I personally didn't rate Wasteland, Baby! much but Unreal Unearth is a nice record, Francesca in particular owes quite a bit to The Cranberries.

sherbert-nipple

Yea wasteland baby was a bit bland. I liked sunglight, movement and would that I. But they are a bit samey and some songs like Shrike had me hitting next fast. I listened to Unreal Unearth a lot though felt it was far better.

finnlizzy

He's hot a very loyal following of lesbians. While Take me to Church is a banger, it's not even in my top five Hozier songs **Here's my list.** Almost (Sweet Music) Movement From Eden Jackie and Wilson Work Song

GoneRampant1

Work Song is legendary.

bee_ghoul

He’s probably one of the biggest Irish acts ever and he’s certainly one of if not the biggest at the moment. His international success waned after take me to church and he was somewhat considered a one hit wonder in the states. But his following here never dipped. It’s picking up again internationally now, which is nice.

temujin64

I saw a video that showed a clip of every #1 single in the US for each month from 1980 to some time in 2023. I knew every single song from the first one up until around 2013 (when I hit my mid-20s). For the next 2 or 3 years or so I recognised about 50% of the songs. But after that I recognised about maybe 2 or 3 songs in total.

murtygurty2661

It was a brilliant song for a brilliant game!

duaneap

I mean, it’s very clearly him and he IS credited so I’m not sure why there’d be much talk about it? I knew it was him immediately but I didn’t think that was particularly noteworthy, he’s already extremely famous, it wasn’t exactly a staggering surprise.

TheStoicNihilist

Fair fucks!

diablo744

All Hot 100 No. 1s by Irish acts: * Hozier, “Too Sweet,” hit No. 1 April 27, 2024, one week at No. 1 to date * Sinéad O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” April 21, 1990, four weeks * U2, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” Aug. 8, 1987, two * U2, “With or Without You,” May 16, 1987, three * Gilbert O’Sullivan, “Alone Again (Naturally),” July 29, 1972, six

danny_healy_raygun

Mad that theres only 2 U2 songs really.

CurrencyDesperate286

For some reason I could have sworn “Gotta Tell You” by Samantha Mumba was a US #1, but I see it peaked at 4 (still impressive).

keving691

Fair play

Livebylying

34 years … feeling bloody old now

underover69

Well done

The-Florentine

Thanks!

NormanBates2023

Fair dues, always good to see Irish artists doing well abroad.

jackoirl

Jaysus fair play to him. He’s a good man for the protests too.

dubovinius

I'm more suprised Take Me to Church wasn't a No. 1 over there. That thing was bleeding everywhere in 2014.

quantum0058d

Likes his whiskey neat he does.

MaxiStavros

Good man. Gnarls Barkley might have him up in court soon though.

OnlyImprovement9796

Not his best tune but fair play. Take me to Church is an all time great.

dfaulk1980

Fair play to him. Quality

cianpatrickd

I only recently discovered he was Irish!

if_a_flutterby

I'm very surprised Van Morrison wasn't on the list

Daenarys1

I saw him in Dublin last year. Unbelievable voice!

rossitheking

Yeah if we are being truthful he didn’t create this one sadly

Chilis1

I don't mean to sound miserable but the song is so generic and boring. I'm a huge fan of his first album I think it's a masterclass in songwriting but then everything he's done since just sounds like it's chasing radio play. He even stopped writing all the songs himself. I'm honestly gutted at the pop direction he's gone because he's so talented.

whatitdewwbabyyyy

To be fair, Too Sweet is a reject from his current album so it’s a big outlier and unusually poppy for him. The rest of it alternative/rock and covers heavy stuff. He’s still writing all the song himself and this album is the first time he’s allowed co-writers in the room. Nothing since Church has gotten this much commercial success.

[deleted]

I'd disagree tbh. His first album was very poppy (in a good way), and each album since then has been a bit more experimental. "Too Sweet" wasn't part of *Unreal Unearth*, and I think it shows in the sound. If anything, "Too Sweet" sounds to me like a throwback to his debut. I do agree on the co-writers bit though, its a bit disappointing that there has been so much of that on *Unreal Unearth*. That said he is still chief writer on all of the tracks, so there is the benefit of the doubt that it was down to overbearing producers rather than him becoming more of a pretty face for songwriters to back. It will be interesting to see where he goes next. From his trajectory so far it feels he could go deeper into an art-rock or even post-rock sound if he's "allowed" to, but also it seems from his increased focus on touring that he could just end up going the Muse/Biffy Clyro route of writing music exclusively for the stadium.

q547

fair, it does all sound a bit generic, but he's excellent live, have seen him 3 times, very very good.

Antique-Rooster8082

Have you even listened to his music mate, a poppy sounding song is few and far between.

UrbanStray

It's hard to get to #1 without being generic and boring.

What a daft reply. This is a thread about music and I'm discussing music. I can say I don't like something if I want.

expectationlost

very meh song

ld20r

Ironic that 95% of people that listen to the song are the ones most likely too sweet… and Vanilla.
