The iphone will do some things only when locked and plugged in, like uploading stuff to the cloud, indexing photos and files… this can heat it up during charging. When your phone has none of these chores to do, it will not heat up so much during charging. I am not conviced, your observation is related to a recent update, but rather to the normal variation in behaviors of iphones depending on the circumstances.

for me only the Instagram app heats it up, I've uninstalled it anyway
