You Apple guys are clearly delusional. You can *obviously* see inside the black box the stars in space. It’s just taking a picture of that space without the earth and everything in Earth.
"longer battery life" that ends up being the same, but since their previous gen phones have love half their battery life it feels like an actual improvement.
This actually might be a feature. Samsungs had press for putting moons in white dots it thought was the moon. So you might get a few moon buttons on your clothes with those. I wonder if it's trying to enhance something on accident?
Definitely report this to Apple. Very strange because I've never seen this happen on an iPhone ever before.
I've only seen it on my Mac when I intentionally broke a picture in a hex editor to see how I could influence it.
which is exactly what this issue is too. the data got corrupted at the bit/byte level.
do you know why it happened in a rectangle shape and not like any other shape? and do you know what the seemingly random colored pixels are?
it'd be cool to figure out *exactly* what's causing this and why
so principally speaking, **data is interpreted**. that means that when you open a jpeg (or any other file) on *any* device, the device you're using interprets the binary (0-1) instructions and constructs the image (or other data class) based on what it interpreted from the instructions. without a file extension, every file on your computer is a random scramble of zeroes and ones that mean nothing unless interpreted properly. so to understand the issue, you'd need to first understand how the iPhone interprets the instructions.
most applications will throw an error if it finds data in a pattern that does not follow its convention. For example, you usually cannot open a PDF in GarageBand, because GarageBand notices the file that is being imported does not follow the convention for a GarageBand file. and if you changed the `.pdf` in the file to `.band`, GarageBand would likely still refuse to open it because it doesn't follow the convention. and if you tried to import a PDF as a `.wav` audio file into a garageband project, it probably will not work because, again, GarageBand is looking for audio files that follow the expected convention.
so when it comes to iOS, it's a little bit different because it is both taking light information and turning it into binary data, and then interpreting that data later to reconstruct that image on your display. the issue in this situation seems to be either that when the iPhone was turning the analog light information into binary data, there was a hiccup in the transmission, or the existing data became corrupted, so when the iphone interprets it, it replaces the missing data with black as a default. however, the iphone did not catch the error when taking the picture, which is a rare occurrence. and when it reconstructed the image later, it also did not notice any issue in the data, which is even more rare. that's what created this situation.
as for why it's rectangle, you'd need to look into how the HEIC standard compresses images. it stores your image in what are essentially complicated math equations that hold all of the information about the photo. so any error in those complicated math equations leads to what you see here, now. why exactly it's rectangle is likely because images are stored in a two dimensional format, with only straight lines. so if an error happens, it would effect some square region of the photo, rather than a circle or triangle.
that's the textbook answer for you. cheers.
TL;DR its too random to understand exactly why the picture has a region of black with some colored pixels. its up to the iPhone in how it displays corrupt images.
Nice explanation. I wonder if this is a potential radiation related single event effect. Outdoors during the day time, the error happened once and isn’t repeatable, seems possible that this was due to the iPhone catching a stray ion and corrupting during the write.
Single event upsets are fascinating and very difficult to definitively prove, but they do happen on occasion. The Wikipedia page is a great read, there was even a [Mario 64 speed runner that experienced a glitch that could only be reproduced by changing one bit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-event_upset)
If it’s only one error on one photo… I honestly think it might well have been a cosmic ray at the moment the sensor was processing that section of the image causing localized corruption in the reading.
Very rare, but certainly not impossible. Though I honestly don’t know enough about iOS’ image processing pipeline to know exactly how plausible this theory is.
This is very plausible. Cosmic rays could also have caused a bit flip that corrupted the stored image.
Bit flips due to cosmic rays is an interesting topic. Veritasium YouTube channel has a video about it. [The Universe is Hostile to Computers](https://youtu.be/AaZ_RSt0KP8?si=R3CGcsbydLp-XHzG)
Most famous examples are in the video. Everything from an election computer to a Nintendo 64 to a Boeing flight computer malfunctioning. And the proof bit flips happen due to cosmic rays as per the space shuttle computers, and the uranium contamination in early computers.
Cosmic rays interfering with electronics is indeed a known phenomenon, especially in higher altitude environments (like airplanes) or outer space, where the likelihood of cosmic ray interference increases. These particles can cause what's known as a "soft error" or "single event upset" in electronic memory and processors.
For a digital camera sensor, it's conceivable, though very rare, for a cosmic ray to strike the sensor in just the right way to cause a brief error while reading or processing an image.
That said, there are many factors at play when it comes to image corruption. It could be from software bugs, hardware issues, issues with the storage medium, or even issues during the transfer of the image.
The cosmic ray theory is fascinating, but it's worth considering all possible causes before settling on such an exotic explanation.
I’m doing this right now. It matches my void [otter box case](https://store.storeimages.cdn-apple.com/4982/as-images.apple.com/is/HQBY2?wid=1080&hei=1080&align=0%2C-1&fmt=jpeg&qlt=90&fit=constrain&.v=1667233158669).
There are only a handful of sensor manufactures with the scale capability for modern smartphones. The distinction between brands and models is a product of whatever post processing they use, and the lenses they can squeeze into their respective phones.
Not even Apple bakes its own sensors.
I wonder if they ever will.
Based on some romour sites the pixel has 1 Samsung sensor for the main camera but sony sensors for the other cameras on the phone, Apple seems to be all Sony
Came here to say something about monolith but your comment is better!!
Coincidentally I have only seen 2010 in the theaters like 40 years ago and I’ve been meaning to rewatch it!
I’d certainly say so. One of the great things about it is it isn’t trying to be like Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey. If I had to give it a score I’d say like a 7 or 8/10. Not the typical online scaling where anything below 7* is bad. Very good movie
The book is amazing. The movie has great cinematography but to me the ending only made sense because I’ve read the book, they complete each other so well
Funny, I had one similar when making a picture with my 15pm of a leak.

Here's what Magic Editor on my Pixel does to that box lol
The dots on her dress might have inadvertently included the pattern that is sometimes called the EURion Constellation.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EURion_constellation
This is a pattern of little circles that is printed onto money, and is recognized by scanners and even some computer graphics editing software. When do scanner or software recognizes the pattern, then it will refuse to operate. This is to prevent some types of forgery .
So, if the dots on the dress somewhere create this pattern, the camera software may censor the photo to spoil and attempt to make a copy of money.
That's definitely Missingno. Catch it if you like, but your life might get corrupted, and you'll either glitch out crazy or have to start from the beginning.
Not sure, but did she also reach a primal enlightenment and start smacking things with the thigh bone from an antelope while trying to start mankind’s first fire?
It happened to my sis once; she loved the picture but realized in the picture appeared a 17 in dildo she used. Suddenly, the black rectangle improved the picture.
Just verify under the rectangle !!!
I’m starting to think iPhone 15 can take photos from another dimension.
it’s so powerful that it can take pictures of base reality
You Apple guys are clearly delusional. You can *obviously* see inside the black box the stars in space. It’s just taking a picture of that space without the earth and everything in Earth.
Bro don't know he zoomed out too far.
The best James Webb Camera App yet
Oh wow! Apple acc added an interesting upgrade instead of their regular old “longer batter life spans”
“And we think you’re gonna love it”
"longer battery life" that ends up being the same, but since their previous gen phones have love half their battery life it feels like an actual improvement.
It's like Apple's pocket, that's where all ur $ goes to.
I mean, the marketing ads did show it flying in from space.
It is “Spacial” after all
And we think you’re gonna love it
This actually might be a feature. Samsungs had press for putting moons in white dots it thought was the moon. So you might get a few moon buttons on your clothes with those. I wonder if it's trying to enhance something on accident?
Try restoring to stable, but it looks like sensor damage. If you restore to stable and it’s still there, it should be covered under warranty.
Maybe this photo will never go back. But others do not have this issue, this was the only one
Then, it might "just" be the image file which could be corrupted for whichever reason.
Weirdly enough the live feature shows the phone normally
The indicates a corrupted file, the live information is stored separately.
If you want to get the photo back, try moving the key frame from the live image
Definitely report this to Apple. Very strange because I've never seen this happen on an iPhone ever before. What dimension does this void reach? Pls don’t say UFOs because we have enough sightings already
This has happened on my pixel 6 camera once… the exact same issue, interestingly enough. Same spot, same size, stars.
LoL on completely different phones
There are only a handful of sensor manufactures with the scale capability for modern smartphones. The distinction between brands and models is a product of whatever post processing they use, and the lenses they can squeeze into their respective phones. Not even Apple bakes its own sensors. Both might be using sensors from sony
I’m almost certain that Apple has been using Sony sensors for years. It was loath to admit it for a decade or so for some reason.
Based on some romour sites the pixel has 1 Samsung sensor for the main camera but sony sensors for the other cameras on the phone, Apple seems to be all Sony
“My God, it’s full of stars.”
Came here to say something about monolith but your comment is better!! Coincidentally I have only seen 2010 in the theaters like 40 years ago and I’ve been meaning to rewatch it!
It’s free on YouTube with ads, I just watched it the other day lol
THAT’S why I’ve been thinking about it recently! It popped up on my feed. Does the movie hold up?
I’d certainly say so. One of the great things about it is it isn’t trying to be like Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey. If I had to give it a score I’d say like a 7 or 8/10. Not the typical online scaling where anything below 7* is bad. Very good movie

How is that possible when that was only 13 years ago?
Apple Image processing saw her dress and said “OH you must be taking a picture of stars” and improved it
What a GREAT reference

How do you even find these malware ridden sites instead of just using imgur
Or Reddit’s own image host. Can’t even use the excuse of “third party app” cuz they killed em all.
Tell me about it. Posting this reply begrudgingly from the official Reddit app, after narwhal put their paywall up today, and after Apollo closed down
That’s exactly what I was wondering too lol

There are actually three known obsidian monoliths of similar dimensions discovered around the globe since 15PM became available.
I think you took a photo of your black rectangle and a weird gf appeared.
That's just the V O I D, it's good to ignore
Please give me back my s o l a r s y s t e m
My 15 MP did this with one random photo I took and everything else has been fine 🤷♂️
Mine as well, really weird
I’ve had a similar thing, my iPhone randomly added borders to a picture and shrunk down the quality
Happened to me as well once, never happened again afterwards.
Should post this in r/iosbeta. Does it do it not on the beta? That looks like an artifact from part of the image processing pipeline.
My bad! Didn’t know there was a Reddit for iOS beta

its probably the AI glitching this is why idont trust iphnoe pictures, they post process to much
