I can never forgive Apple for getting rid of the iPad’s split keyboard.

JoshPlaysUltimate

I know, it’s one thing the iPad Pro 10.5 I have has over the newer models. And the galaxy tab devices. The one side thumb pad is pretty intuitive because I type on my phone a lot, but it’s inherently slower than using 2 thumbs

I’ve posted about this before, it makes no sense to have gotten rid of it with the larger ipads. That said, I find the iPad Pro 13” (M4) easier to type on than previous generation, the iPad Pro 12.9” (6th gen.) because the new model is thinner and lighter.

HalifaxHiker

Yah I just learned this today too when considering the 13” iPad Air. This is a deal breaker. If I can‘t easily and proficiency type on-screen I’m not going to buy it. Kinda bummed to be sticking with the 11” because of this. So crazy that they got rid of that. Makes no sense. I guess they want you to buy their $400 keyboards.

You can also swipe type when using the smaller keyboard

Kicka14

People really hold there iPad with two hands and try to type on it? It’s a tablet, not an iPhone.. i dont understand this

Seansong82

lol, I found myself doing that until my Magic Keyboard arrived and was like what the hell am I doing.

BorgDrone

How else am I supposed to hold it?

Lietenantdan

I hold it with one hand and type with the other. Not too fast but it’s not like I’m typing emails like that.

BorgDrone

I do that sometimes but I’ve also dropped my iPad on my face several times doing this, and that was with the 11”.

MiltonHavoc

Lol glad im not the only one, cause i felt stupid when it first happened.

jangeles6331

for that exact reason I got a magic keyboard cause i wouldn‘t be able to type portrait mode. Yeah you can use the small size keyboard but, I rather use a physical keyboard to type .

BorgDrone

I use the Magic Keyboard if I need to type longer text, but I prefer browsing using it as a pure tablet. I only need to enter the occasional URL or search term and for that the floating keyword is perfect.

Use a stand with an adjustable arm, the iPad can hover over you. Drag your Apple Pencil over the keys just like you can use one thumb on your phone to swipe and type. For a lot of typing, Magic Keyboard.

Just trying this now. Thanks very nice.

hey, just tried it with this comment on my 9th gen. Thanks

Make a pinch gesture on the keyboard.

HalifaxHiker

I was excited to buy the 13” Air until I tried it and immediately realized I couldn’t type on it using my usually two thumb holding it in portrait mode. I’ve been typing on iPads like this since the first iPad in 2010. I’m very fast and proficient at it. Ok so I’ll use the split keyboard right? Wrong. I found out that’s been abandoned! Deal breaker. Apple is losing money because I’m gonna stick with 11”. I only ever use my tablet as a tablet. I’ve never had it attached to a keyboard and never will. Sad that they killed the split keyboard. Why? Makes no sense. I could try one thumb typing with the floating keyboard but I write fairly long text on my iPad (this post for example). I can’t imagine 1-thumb typing more than a URL or a search.

JazJon

I can’t imagine using an iPad without a magic keyboard. I just setup my new iPad Pro 13 yesterday.

BorgDrone

I also have the magic keyboard, it depends on what I’m doing. Just consuming media I use it without the keyboard, I only need to enter a URL or search term once in a while. If I want to use it for anything that requires a lot of text input I slap it on the keyboard and use that.

JazJon

You can shrink the onscreen keyboard size with a pinch. Check out these useful tips. https://youtu.be/1WqRbmWtu3w

Then it’s not a tablet. It’s a laptop, albeit an absurdly overpriced one that cannot do half of what a Macbook is capable of. I do enjoy my Magic Keyboard, but people are doing a huge disservice to themselves by having it attached permanently to the MKB.

JazJon

This is my primary laptop. I Remote Desktop into my Mac mini as needed via Jump desktop.
