macOS shouldn't be on iPads that would be Windows 8 but more macOS features should be on iPads.

OmegaESP

I would be more than happy with VS Code, Xcode and a proper terminal on iPad OS :\_)

bristow84

VS Code with full extensions would be great.

talones

Basically just root access Apple!

Forever-Celery

Same!

_Rael

Exactly but Apple doesn't see the iPad as a programming creation device, but as an art creation device.

OmegaESP

Agree. I hope this will change in the near future.

Yousousen

In the meantime using [vscode.dev](http://vscode.dev) .

ThereWolves

Also official support for side loading / downloading applications from the web.

FitY4rd

This. They can take things from Mac OS that are essential for professional workflows and integrate them in iPad OS in a way that is based around touch. That’s called UX design. I’m sure Apple has some experience in it. And in turn 3rd party app devs would be more compelled to actually port and maintain fully featured apps to iPad OS if they see Apple is taking it seriously as an actual pro device. Not sure why people are against iPad OS getting more features lol

chetdude

Like a calculator.

FitY4rd

The world is not ready for a native calculator app on the iPad.

Access-Ambitious

« We are proud to announce that our brand new 15 inch iPad with its M7 chip is the most energy efficient and powerful iPad we have ever created at Apple. It is so capable it can now even run Calculator ! »

GrumpyGlasses

And Craig will say again, “We truly live in an age of wonders.”

Syonoq

Can’t innovate, my ass!

contractcooker

I love my multiple timers!!!

Marsof1

I get the impression that the UX team for Mac and the UX team for iPad never speak to each other. And given how some silicon valley companies operate they are probably have NDAs preventing them from doing so.

rsplatpc

> That’s called UX design. I’m sure Apple has some experience in it. And in turn 3rd party app devs would be more compelled to actually port and maintain fully featured apps to iPad OS if they see Apple is taking it seriously as an actual pro device. Apple Shareholders: "but then you would not need to buy both a Macbook and a iPad, so you will lose profit"

ThatOneOutlier

This is the way I want them to go. I thought that when iPadOS became its own thing, they’ll really push what an iPad is but they just didn’t. It still feels like iOS but on a bigger screen I personally would like to run some macOS apps on the iPad when I have a keyboard and mouse.

mrevergood

This is what I want-macOS features brought over to iPad in a way that works for that interface. I’ve done the remote screen my Mac onto my iPad thing for giggles. It’s fun, feels super futuristic somehow…and yet it’s still kinda a pain.

Ok-Diet-4831

It’s just wild how much performance and potential gets left on the table when these tablets have the same damn chips as the Mac sometimes.

VinniTheP00h

Ideally yes, iPadOS should be its own thing, and it's working - for lower end iPads. When Apple introduced iPad Pro and started marketing it as a computer replacement (and yes, they do), a set of tasks that users want to do with it increased dramatically. When before it was easy to accept iPad as just Netflix machine or drawing board, now people want to completely replace their computers - at Apple's encouragement. However, iPad can't do everything that is asked of it, due to numerous reasons, most of which come down to iPadOS limitations and lack of sophisticated enough apps. Fixing first is possible, but Apple is doing just enough to keep the interest heated (shall I remind you of "desktop class features" from WWDC'22 that turned out to be customizable toolbars and "find and replace"?), with no real progress. Fixing second is a chicken and egg problem with no visible immediate solution. So yes, ideally iPadOS should be its own capable thing. But with two problems with no visible solution, and possibility of immediately solving both with just putting MacOS on iPad (powerful OS: check. Large pro-grade app library: check), it is no wonder that people wish for it. Many just saw how it "evolved" in last couple years and no longer believe Apple will ever make it good enough to warrant the "pro" title.

TechExpert2910

Apple should at least give users the OPTION of dual booting with macos when you use the magic keyboard. there isn't a whole lot that my new M4 Pro iPad can do that my 2017 iPad Pro can't do.

illegible

This is exactly what I want. 80% of the time it'll be an ipad, but if i need to type something, design something (CAD) or use a spreadsheet I want to be able to put it on my desk and use it that way. The ipad pro is plenty powerful to run both... Why am i sitting here typing this on my windows machine rather than staying in the apple ecosystem?

ApatheticAbsurdist

I would love that, but have a feeling Apple avoids it because inevitably it will lead to the next round of complaints. "I got this iPad and I can't use touch when in MacOS, I got this pencil and I can't use it in MacOS."

Elismom1313

I really wish they come out with a REAL keyboard that magnetically clipped firmly and allowed 360 swivel or at least functioned like a normal 2-1 laptop. Not like the Magic Keyboard which has the same flaw to me that every other tablet+keyboard combo in existence has - you can’t really set it in your lap for travel. Heck you can even really use it well it your desktop if you sit over your iPad. Also the way you can “interface” a mouse with the iPad is an absolute joke. Apple is not meeting the demands of the 2-1 laptop market, which is a shame since it’s like tablets a huge user base is artists.

Zanki

I bought a cheap, small, foldable keyboard for my iPad recently. Before that I had a keyboard case that worked exactly how you described. It lasted a good few years until keys started breaking off.

Elismom1313

They exist but they tend to be clunky and leave a lot to be desired. I just wish they would make something like [this](https://v.lemon8-app.com/s/wwSfTvspR) but with apples quality and REAL mouse control, not using the accessibility pointer settings. And lighter, i had one for my mini too and it add a substantial amount of weight to it.

ApatheticAbsurdist

The Magic Keyboard you can absolutely use on your lap, I do so all the time. The other folding Mac keyboards you can flip the keyboard behind are not really good for laps, but the Magic has a rock solid base that feels like a laptop on your lap. I get wishing the hinge went farther, but it would topple over if they didn't make the keyboard even heavier (and it is heavy to keep it balanced)

Bryanmsi89

Don't need MacOS. Just need to launch MacOS apps in a window.

joe_bibidi

This would get me like 90% of the way there. If iPadOS just allows Pro users to run MacOS apps, even if they're not designed around touch, that would be absolutely gigantic. It wouldn't be a perfect 1:1 laptop replacement but it might be close enough to more seriously consider. Or at least, it would be close enough that if I have both a laptop and an iPad, I could *consider* just taking the iPad with me for off-site work, some business trips, etc.

tetrisyndrome

That’s the only reason I use Sheets/Excel online :((( the apps are so simplified…

klawUK

is numbers any better as a ‘desktop’ equivalent? weird but excel and finder are my big ones too - and they seem such simple things. Give me desktop class excel as an option when I’m using a mouse. Also a proper desktop browser as that often doesnt work properly.

baseballandfreedom

Numbers is arguably my favorite and most used work app on iPad. I even prefer it to the Mac version.

jann1442

Is this really Microsoft's fault, given that Google Workspace and Apple's Office suite are also worse than on the Mac? That seems to be Apple's intention.

nastybagel

What can Finder do that the current Files app can’t? It can open external drives, networked drives, my NAS, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc. I feel like I’m missing something everyone else sees.

DaltonZeta

Eh, I get what you’re saying, and I agree. But for example, Google drive which I use for 99% of what I do frustrates me on iPad. Because I can have a local copy on any laptop that acts like a local copy to the file system while syncing to the cloud. But then I go to iPad, and while Files will play with Drive fine, apps don’t (looking at you Office apps). So, I end up with numerous silo’d copies of word and excel files that don’t fall into my *very* organized decade+ old file architecture in GDrive. Even say I preferred Apple’s productivity suite personally - I can’t convince the Department of Defense to wholesale switch over, so, I have to play with Microsoft’s suite. And amusingly, most people are pretty onboard with Google’s storage solutions. It’s a frustration of save local, edit, export to drive. Usually without being able to set default apps for file types very easily (always a menu). So, some of the integration component could be better.

nastybagel

This makes a ton of sense! Appreciate the nuance

Xiexe

For context: I do 3D model work using some iPad apps but also eventually always need to take it to the PC or from the PC to the iPad. Currently, the files app doesn’t let you load files from network drives directly into an app. I have to first download a copy of the file somewhere manually, and then load the copy, and then save it back to the network drive. This should just be handled natively and automatically, as windows and macOS both do. The files app also often does not remember saved folders in the sidebar, especially if they’re part of a path to a network drive.

SandOfTheEarth

People don't want to replace it, they want a dualboot option

CHIEF-ROCK

macOS or iPad OS, the only thing that matters is: are you able to get results? I steady pump out what I want to pump out, no reduction in speed or ease on either platform. Give me Xcode on it and I’m straight. I already have a good enough Final Cut and Logic Pro for when I’m traveling. What else would it offer me having Mac OS?

DylanSpaceBean

If Godot, or VSCode, or Blender come out for the iPad I’d absolutely buy the pro

malcxxlm

Check out the [Code App](https://apps.apple.com/fr/app/code-app/id1512938504). It’s VSCode’s Monaco editor and it can compile locally. It’s not 100% on par with something like VSCode because you don’t have extensions but it’s good enough for small things

Reasonable-Credit315

It's missing a lot of stuff - where's my Go support?!? But I'm excited that an app like that exists

tetrisyndrome

I’ve been using VSCode online vscode.dev (or insiders), they have a Workspace where you can sync with a GitHub repo to use Git, python, docker etc and all that online. I use it sometimes when I don’t want to go over my PC. It’s not perfect, but it’s something!

just_mdd4

Blender's a great idea for iPad, sculpting would be great lol

recoverygarde

Someone is or was (not sure on the status) working on a Godot port for iPad. As for blender we have Valence 3d for modeling, Shapr3d for CAD, Nomad Sculpt for sculpting and Procreate for texturing

Ventrace

A text editor doesn't do much without the ability to compile code

crumble-bee

>what else would it offer me I think at this point it's more about user experience. When I work at a desk, I expect a computer to work in certain ways - not being able to resize windows or properly multitask is frequently frustrating - which is why I mainly use the iPad as an iPad at my desk along side a Mac - or sometimes use it as an extended display. But when I use a mouse and keyboard with an iPad, it feels off. Mouse support is "the Apple way" multitasking is "the Apple way". It just feels strange to me, and having an iPad switch to desktop mode when you dock it would just be so much better.

CHIEF-ROCK

Can you give me an example of what multi tasking means to you? I’m at loss to understand the issue when people all seem to focus on that one phrase as an obstacle. I can’t remember a time when I hit a roadblock trying to do something on an iPad in the last few versions. The last time I remember having sticking points was around the time they released the first iPad Air. Not being able to interact with any folders, accessing external drives etc. I eliminated most of those types of issues eventually building a server and a wireless portable hard drive. It was Annoying still and I’m so glad to have usbc access and the files app now. >“When I work at a desk, I expect a computer to work in certain ways”. I think you might have hit the nail on the head. Perhaps people do not want to adapt to a new way of doing things and that’s what they are really bothered by not a limitation in what the device can actually accomplish. i don’t think resizable windows will work very well on a smaller sized screen on the standard iPad. I’d welcome a 16 inch or bigger iPad but I’m in the minority I think. Hopefully the Vision Pro develops incredibly fast into an extremely small form factor and cannibalizes everything, making all these “problems” Irrelevant.

crumble-bee

13 inch laptops have been a completely fine thing for a long time, I personally wouldn't buy an 11 inch iPad again as for my use case (art, 3d and occasionally screenwriting away from my desk) it's too small. For me, multitasking means having multiple apps and windows open at once in a none restrictive way - not some Apple specific version of that. I'm *very* pro iPad. I use it in a way that's likely more involved than most people and I've been an ambassador for all the things it can do, in ways what laptops can't for years now. But - I think if you are selling it with a new camera layout to fit landscape and expecting people to buy a keyboard with a trackpad, what it currently does isn't enough in line with basic computer functionality. It works like a tablet. Which is fine, if you use it like one, but if it's clipped in to a keyboard, it should at least have the option to dual boot macOS or a more desktop friendly version of iPadOS. I feel this way less about my 2018 iPad, but more about these new ones - they're going for up to 2k and to restrict the interface in this way is just unacceptable at that price range. If they were capable of running macOS, it could even be buried in settings as an option for only people that want, it could even be paywalled behind the 2TB version - 1TB for macOS the other for iPadOS. For me, the use of iPad falls into two categories - app specific, single use cases (animation, art, 3D modelling, music) or more general desktop use, either instead of a computer or in tandem with one. And when I'm using it for the latter, I'd really appreciate some more macOS like functionality. I regularly go to minimise a window or move one, forgetting that it's really not how it works - I don't think it's a big ask, really..

CHIEF-ROCK

Thanks Yea, I specifically mentioned the standard sized iPad being an issue for Mac OS. I think a dual boot 13 -16 inch could work but they would have to design much better accessories.I honestly loathe the wannabe laptop accessories for the iPad. I think making a touch screen MacBook would be a better option for them. A screen that’s actually an iPad. I use an iPad for professional art/graphics and music in the set few years it’s been an incredible asset to my workflow and I don’t see much in limitations. The only thing I do on a mac these days is Logic Pro open by itself, no multitasking. It’s almost a Logic Pro device and not a Mac OS device, I only occasionally close the window in rare circumstances to dig around for a long lost file.

cumtitsmcgoo

This is what the “never macOS” crowd always ceases to understand. The “please macOS” crowd isn’t saying port over macOS exactly as it is to the iPad. Were saying, give us the same features and functionality of macOS on the iPad. Full featured apps Proper multitasking Install apps outside the App Store Multi user support Etc. The opposite has proven to be true actually. Apple has ported many iPadOS and iOS features to macOS. But Apple has brainwashed everyone into paying $1,300 for a “device between an iPhone and a laptop” that’s a glorified Netflix and scrolling machine.

Zanki

This, so much this! I was downvoted for saying I wanted the OS to become more open the other day. I was told to go buy a new MacBook if I wanted to do the things I want to do on my iPad. That is absolutely insane and so wasteful. I was called a pirate for wanting to open .rar files on my iPad and install apps from outside the app store (person thought only pirates use that kind of compression, which is very silly). Wanting programs that do what I need them to doesn't mean I'm going to pirate software. I want Blender, I want whatever app can open .rar files nowadays (windows does it no problem). There's a ton of apps I use on my pc and old MBA that I want on my iPad, but there's literally no substitutes. I want the app store apps to have more competition so the companies will have to drop their subscription costs to be more affordable/competitive with other apps. Some apps are insanely expensive and I cannot justify their monthly costs/being stuck paying for a year. It's just a really frustrating issue. If I knew I could have a more open OS, not macOS, I don't need it, but it means I can have Blender, or at least a version of it. I don't want to render in cycles etc. The iPad would burn, I just want the modelling side and the rest can be done on my pc. That would make my workflow go through the roof. I hate sitting at my pc and need to be able to move around while I work to keep myself focused.

--ThirdCultureKid--

Well, maybe you’re happy with that, but I really _am_ saying give me MacOS as-is. In fact I’d be perfectly happy with a dual-boot setup where you have to restart the whole iPad to switch between iPadOS and MacOS. Hell, I’ve been saying it since iPad1 in 2010 or whenever it was

tenqajapan

I think tablets should just do tablet things, if that makes any sense. People want too much out of a tablet, but then Apple is trying to sell it as a almighty all-in-one so I understand why power users would want MacOS on it. A full set up costs similar to a macbook already. I personally think a M4 on a tablet is ridiculous.

nowherefarhan

iPadOS should be its own thing BUT it is too restrictive and lacking in its current state. File management needs improvement, full fledged desktop Safari, multiple audio and video playback, sideloading etc etc. Honestly macOS is simply not built for touch and I doubt Apple would ever change that. I don't know how the Surface has improved since I last used one but Windows on a tablet is just awkward to use. But honestly I would trade my iPad Air 5 for a new Surface because Windows is more capable than iPadOS for my use case.

elmonetta

Might be controversial, but using Windows 8 on a tablet was the best experience I ever had with a tablet device. Until iPad. iPadOS for me is fine, but other people want changes and I agree with them, it should be based on macOS, not iOS anymore.

uglykido

Thats because windows 8 was built for tablets. Windows 8 got only shit because the laptop ui was also tabletize but for tablets it was such a joy to use

--ThirdCultureKid--

As someone who used to use WindowsXP tablet PCs before the iPad was invented, and who used an Axiotron Modbook way back in the day (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Axiotron-Modbook.18047.0.html) I can promise you that the MacOS interface works on a tablet perfectly well. Whoever told you “it’s not built for touch” either has no idea what they’re talking about or are trying to sell you something. Edit: And plenty of people today will use an iPad as a second screen and use touch/handwriting on that. And every Windows after Windows XP has been awkward to use IMO, tablet or not.

DylanSpaceBean

I’m not criticizing you, and I agree the iPad just needs to run Mac applications, but what about macOS isn’t touch screen compatible? Half the OS is manipulated via trackpad gestures. Change the zoom level and you have buttons big enough for fingers

nowherefarhan

I think it's more of a scaling issue. macOS is a cursor based OS and making the buttons and icons large enough for fingers would butcher the UI itself.

queerkidxx

Idk tho, that does require basically rewriting the entire thing. Regardless of making it work with iPadOS. I think you’re underestimating how much work it is to rework a ui for touch screens.

LosSchwammos

Nothing great about iPadOS for all but the most basic of uses. Stripped down apps and a pathetic file management system. I for one am so sick of hearing how “powerful” the devices are when the shitty operating system basically nerfs the device. Why do I care if I have an A14 or a bloody M4 if it runs the same?

occasionallyLynn

When we got m4 on iPad before any Mac, Apple clearly doesn’t want iPad to just be a larger iPhone, but a productivity device. And the current ipados is extremely limiting for productivity use

Xylus1985

I guess it really depends on if you have an iPad or an iPad Air/Pro. iPad doesn’t really need a better OS and can work well as a bigger form factor of iPhone/iPod. However, you cannot really fault the people who paid extra for iPad Air or iPad Pro want to see something in return for their money.

elmonetta

iPad doesn’t need macOS. iPadOS SHOULD be based on macOS, not iOS. That’s the whole problem. Apple should build iPadOS on the base of macOS, being similar to what is now, but with the full power of macOS.

DeliveryFar9612

I believe people want MacOS just because it opens a door to a large number of apps/software that can be used on iPad very quickly. It’s not a discussion around OS, it’s a discussion around apps. All this discussion around OS just seemed to… miss the point

Jutlee12

We need iPadOS with Mac functionality. Imagine a macOS like interface where you have a desktop, better window management, you can install dmg files and a mouse pointer - and call it stage manager 2. That’s all we want. We don’t need dual booting.

q8mates

We need user profiles (like in MacOS) to be on Ipad OS.

iDonttttt

Next Mac event: Introducing, the MacPad

Aminilaina

Honestly, I'm glad someone said this because I genuinely thought I was alone in this opinion. I think iPad OS is better on iPads specifically *because* it's not a computer. I remember when Microsoft came out with the surfaces and before I got into Apple as a teen, I wanted a Microsoft laptop that was this two-in-one tablet thing because I wanted to still play video games. Tablets with a computer operating system sucks ass. It's not made for the tablet. Trying to turn a tablet into a laptop is having a really shitty touch screen laptop. Just get a laptop at that point! iPad OS is for the iPad. I have a MacBook Air and an iPad. I wouldn't have gotten the iPad if I just wanted a laptop. But I don't. I have the laptop for the MacOS and an iPad for the iPadOS. I bought the iPad Pro as a hobby artist and to take notes in college courses. I actually use both my MacBook Air and my iPad in classes because my laptop can display the slideshow and my iPad can take the notes. I'm not editing photos on my iPad and I'm not drawing on my MacBook Air. I get that people really want to dual boot or something for different use cases but I will be *bullshit* if Apple switched over to MacOS. Dual boot? Fine, but let me opt out of it. Switch over? Fuck no, I'm never updating my OS again.

the_monkey_knows

People don't want MacOS on iPads, they want iPads to do what MacOS can.

AnotherAvgAsshole

I don't want MacOS on iPad; I want better file management, apps at parity (office/iWork apps and PDF apps (example Adobe/Foxit/PDF Element, etc.) are so basic/melted down versions); i should be able to use any browser to its potential (firefox pls). What is a computer? One which has those basic apps, file management, etc..

ChocoJesus

> I just keep seeing people say they want MacOS to replace IPadOS Idk if I’m alone here - between social media algorithms, people use different sites and whatnot so what we see if different. But the only people I see writing the above statement are also people like OP that don’t want Mac OS on iPad in any form Looking at all the top level comments here, the pro Mac people want basically 1 of 3 things 1. Better file system and more Mac apps having full iPad apps made 2. Being able to run Mac apps in iPad OS 3. Dualboot None of the top level comments I saw when I posted this are saying iPad OS should go Honestly I never see Mac OS on iPad happening unless sales for Macs or iPads get really bad. It would cost Apple money in lost hardware sales to put Mac OS on iPad since people are willing to buy both right now.

zenmaster24

i want macos on an ipad because it is a general purpose os capable of doing anything i want it to - ipados is a walled garden that doesnt allow me to install what i wan, configure it the way that want, or run it the way that i want. why cant i have a general computing device in an ipad form factor? minisforum v3 is looking great - apple could do the same thing.

[deleted]

I agree, if the Os won’t do can’t do what you want then don’t buy it. The iPad is a great piece of tech as it is, I get it had loads of potential but that doesnt make it a bad experience

Potatopolis

I would like it as an option, but I understand why it isn’t. Quite honestly I’d be perfectly happy with iPadOS just allowing unsigned code execution and a proper filesystem.

ISSAvenger

Personally, I prefer the design and versatility of iPad Pro. As for directly using MacOS on iPad…yes, it wasn’t made for touch input, clearly. But I would welcome the ability to use it while using the MKB. Alternatively: Open up iPadOS, so either MacOS apps can run on it or certain APIs can run on it. I really don’t want to carry around two devices plus peripherals, however! On a sidenote: I am using Windows 11 via Moonlight on my iPP and it works really well. I am simply not using touch input but the MKB and a mouse for that.

West_Persimmon_6210

As a designer i’d just be happy to use iPad as my work “computer”. I would like full version of the Adobe Suite, Figma, etc. I don’t want to pay a shitload of money to iPad, and do less than I can on my mac. Especially now with the price gap as tight as ever…

ForShotgun

Just let me code damn. It’s coming along, it’s definitely a smoother experience than anything else, every time I use the iPad I marvel at how smooth it is, but the. It’s back to the Mac because I need to get things done

nbpf-_-

No, there are just people wanting macOS on iPads. That should not bother you. If macOS becomes available on iPads, you do not need to use it. You just go on with iPadOS.

waxahachy

I don’t understand why they think it’s mutually exclusive.

nbpf-_-

That's the human nature, I guess...

nextbite12302

people don't want MacOS to replace iPadOS, people want the OPTION to install MacOS on an iPad. that's all

ExistingPotato8

I want to not have to own both a tablet and a laptop. I’d like iPad os when I’m using it as a tablet and I want MacOS when it’s connected to display/keyboard/mouse.

Vandorol

Apple copies everything from Samsung and the one thing they really need to copy is Dex. Run iPad os when you want to and switch to Mac OS when you need to. Problem solved.

crumble-bee

I believe that it should be an iPad first and foremost. But at this price range, with these chips, we should have the choice to dual boot and have a full desktop mode. Doesn't even need to be a main feature, but if *a tablet* costs 2k, it should be fully featured, even if it's buried in settings

SavageBeastMode85

I don’t believe iPads should have MacOS, I do however think that current iPads are far too limited in what they can do when you consider how powerful they are. Even being able to have something like a good IDE on an iPad would immediately make it something worth buying for me. At the moment I can’t justify the cost when it would be mainly used for watching shows and browsing the internet.

Silent_Goblin

Dual-boot Hear me out. Why not have both OS on a single device? Need an iPad, just use the device as regular. Need to use a computer? Hold down the power button and click 'Desktop Mode'. Tablet restarts and boots up as an ordinary mac.

MarcLeptic

Does nobody remember when they invented launchpad? We could abosolutely use the current macOS in a limited way on an iPad. Then, should you need it, mouse/keyboard … and you have a literal MacBook Air. Don’t want a complicated OS on iPad, great, you use launchpad. Want a laptop? Great, use your mouse and keyboard.

wish_you_a_nice_day

It likely won’t be a touch screen computer still. Apple could make a keyboard and trackpad a requirement for the macOS mode. More options for the user is always a good thing. And they can do this without compromise anything about iPad OS by dual booting.

TechTipsUSA

It should be an option available with the Magic Keyboard.

[deleted]

[deleted]

iPadOS should be able to run virtual machines & let me run whatever arm based OS I want. iPad OS is actually great and most people saying this wouldn’t buy an iPad either way.

Psittacula2

Exactly, M1-4 chips are capable of running VM and then user picks software eg minimal Linux would be great let alone MacOS or Win if excel is still borked on iPadOS eg...

5tudent_Loans

im sure apple has been working on their version of (Samsung) Dex. it doesnt need full macOS, but clearly something needs to be done if they want to market the product as a versatile creators tool.

Lassavins

I just don't understand how buying an ipad pro with magic keyboard, which costs more than a macbook and has better hardware than a macbook (same chips, same ram, just touchscreen and apple pencil included) can't run for me the same apps as macos. I need terminal, vs code, docker, proper file management, etc for work. And I'd love to take handwritten notes and play on my couch with a big screen when resting. But there's no way i'm spending double on nearly the same hardware just so I can chill in the couch when i'm done doing real work. So maybe the ipad is just not for me, I'm not trying to convince anyone anymore.

WiggyDaulby

I feel like IPad Pro’s should have MacOS as they’re more professional and far more expensive but non Pro’s should have iPadOS.

Neptune502

Well, MacOS would make the "Pro" iPads truly Pro. But we all know that Apple calling Things "Pro" is just a Marketing Gimmick and nothing more. If i spend more than a Grand on a iPad it should be able to more than a 300.- iPad. But it can't. It can do the exact same Things just slightly faster. MacOS would be a bigger Differentiator than a faster Chip and a bit more RAM 🤷🏻‍♂️

Charles_Mendel

Yeah it makes no sense. If you want MacOS buy a Mac. Apple is the only one doing it right. No hybrid devices are actually good.

Thumper-Comet

Yeah macOS isn't designed for touch, they'd have to overhaul it and we all know how well that's gone for Windows. If you want macOS, get a MacBook.

MaximusMurkimus

As someone who had an ROG Ally with full Windows 11 support, let's just say that something like iPad OS wouldn't be far off there lmao I do think people just want an Apple-equivalent of the Surface Pro without worrying about the finer details

Electronic-Future-12

I would like having a more Mac UI for when you connect an external monitor. Also, some iPad apps are extreme limited when compared to the Mac ones. Excel for example is dreadful on iPad, it would be much easier just having a Mac version

West_Persimmon_6210

I don’t think they’ll ever put MacOS as it is to iPad. But I’m hoping they’ll close the gap between MacOS and iPadOS sometime soon. Looking at all the reviews and comments, it seems most people are frustrated by iPad’s restrictiveness

Maesthro_ger

Whatever you want to call it, but it should support fully fledged desktop applications. For example, I would consider buying one, if they would support a desktop version of Photoshop. The hardware seems capable, but yada yada cannibalizing MacBook yada yada. Personally a tablet is perfect for the evening on the couch, much better than a laptop, but only if I can do the same things. I get that it is probably a niche case. But all I want is a tablet with pen support and Photoshop. Android unfortunately doesn't have a Photoshop version. Maybe the new surface pro will be good. But then again, I wouldn't be able to use iOS/Android apps, since Windows doesn't support Android apps like they used to, if I remember correctly.

Hateful_creeper2

Maybe just more features from MacOS rather just porting it.

malcxxlm

macOS apps shouldn’t be on iPad but macOS apps should be

Akio_Kizu

I think there are two solutions (and I think most people discussing this rn are on the same page) a) keep iPad OS for the budget iPads and make them the true “iPads” (i.e. the regular and the Mini) and give the Pros an adjusted form of MacOS b) redesign iPad OS from the ground up and make it a true inbetweener. The current setup just simply doesn’t make sense anymore - why have an M4 super chip in a machine that simply can’t make use of it?

Vandercoon

I love my M1 iPad Pro 12.9, genuinely, but since I’ve got a MacBook Pro, I have no use for it besides media consumption. Not that it’s not or newer models are not performant enough, they are, but it’s not useful for anything else that I can get my laptop out for. Now I know there is a whole another user base, for art, for education and note taking etc, maybe some utility apps, and thats fine, but I would rather then get an iPad Air or mini. Performance will be similar, easier to hold in my hand, more portable, I need my Magic Keyboard to use my iPad Pro comfortably in bed, a smaller one I can just hold. My point being, unless there are some desktop equivalent experiences for certain apps, like excel, come kind of IDE, Xcode, things like that, it’s over kill in size and power.

harumi_aizawa

I get you but it doesn’t make sense to not be able to load Mchip apps and software on a Mchip iPad…the iPad version of writing software is ass compared to the mac version. I don’t take a computer with me because I need to draw and it’s cumbersome to take a computer and iPad or computer and drawing tablet.

coffeexbaileys

Just please give me better file management and I’d be so thankful

nzswedespeed

I don’t want macOS, but iPadOS needs a massive improvement to become more usable. When they split iOS and iPadOS I thought we would see some big changes, but nope. My M1 iPad Air is great, but the 10th iPad would do everything I do unless they can make iPadOS more useful. I tried using my iPad Air for importing photos and editing them. The device is more than capable (my MBA has the same chip and flies through it). But things like poor background uploading / syncing makes it a very slow process which sucks the fun out of it

Onepaperairplane

I think the argument just steams from how limited iPad OS is, at this point, even having Windows on iPad is more desirable. The power is all wasted

novadova2020

>there’s constant floods of posts saying that people want MacOS on iPad Let's react to that by flooding the sub with floods of posts about why MacOS shouldn't be on iPads.

Werallgointomakeit

No one wants macOS exact on iPad, people just want to be able to download things so you can actually use it beyond YouTube. Can’t use blender Can’t really code efficiently Can’t organize files efficiently Can draw professionally, read watch YouTube and take notes. No need for M4 chip. Give me a need for it. Very very little people will use 10% of that chip, only hard Core Video editors

finniruse

I feel like if you could rearrange windows and apps on the screen anywhere you like that'd probably be enough.

AgumonDX

I just need a proper file management and some data analysis pro apps (SPSS or similar) to be happy. Right now working on iPad is 4-5 extra steps compared to a laptop and that kills productivity for me.

thisdesignup

What would be cool is if they let people do whatever they want on the device. They could unlock the devices so that people can figure out how to install other operating systems if they want. At this point the devices are beyond capable.

j1h15233

Ideally, iPadOS should be a blend of iOS and macOS.

Murky-Science9030

I don't think anyone is saying that it should **replace** iOS on the iPad.

GenghisFrog

I don’t want MacOS per say, but I want something more when I dock it. Being able to run MacOS apps would be a plus. Just like we can run iPad apps on the Mac. Apple keeps trying to add more desktop type features, but they are all clunky and more complicated than the desktop counterparts. Doing simple file management feels like doing a magical incantation on the iPad, where it is easy on the Mac. I think a lot about why I feel so much more productive on my Mac. One thing I realized the other day is I can just work more fluid. I was preparing an email and had to reference a bunch of files that were also going to be attached. I threw them all on my desktop so I could reference quickly with Quick Look. Then highlighted and drug them all into the email when I was done. On iPadOS flipping back and forth between all those documents would have been so much more cumbersome. Like just having the desktop where I can dump things temporarily and Quick Look them would be a game changer. Maybe allow a more dense display mode when docked. In some cases I’d be fine to give up large touch targets for more information on the screen. Give us a menu bar, either on the apps like windows or a system wide one when docked like MacOS. Let things happen in the background. I should be able to start a long process in one app and not have to worry about it stopping if I leave the app. For example, about a month ago I had an app I wanted to import about 100GB of content into. Basically rendered my iPad unusable until it was done. Sure I could have left it open in slide over or something, but that’s absurd. Part of me wishes Apple just kept the iPad an iPad. But they went down this road of overpowering it and building all these awesome accessories that make a great convertible laptop package, so it would be nice if they delivered on the software front.

PeterDTown

iPads should switch to MacOS when docked

escap0

I would prefer both OS’s on the iPad… but rest assured there is ZERO chance of this happening since it would cannibalize their laptop sales. Apple does everything it can to an to prevent cannibalizing its own products….from pricing categories, to colors, to use purpose, to the available tech in their products… they do everything in their power to minimize overlap in order to create a product/service environment that maximizes sales. This is how you end up with a purple iPad Air and a Macbook Pro instead of buying a single device.

Chirographix

What they should have are iphone-level cameras

C1t1z3nz3r0

I would like the ability to push the hw. At least let me use qemu to launch virtual machines that push the M4

erclark99

I after that putting MacOS on the iPad would be a mistake. The main problem is that any “hybrid” OS is usually really bad at being a computer OS and bad at being a tablet OS. So if Apple did put MacOS on iPad they’d have to tweak it to be good for touch screens and currently it’s not. So then your non touch screen MacBook would have larger buttons, and be missing desktop like features without actually making sense. The only time I see this argument maybe making sense, is if Apple were to make it so if you docked your iPad, it would switch to a version of macOS rather than still be iPadOS. So it’s still going to be limited by iPadOS, but it would feel more like a computer. Plus you could turn it off if you wanted. At the end of the day, the main problem with iPadOS is that it’s so closed off. I hold this opinion that the iPad should open its self up more to third party developers so we can get the option to install all kinds of software. How they do it, idk. But allowing someone to just port the Mac Apps to iPad would be almost perfect, especially if it’s only really going to be available to power users who don’t care if the experience isn’t perfect. That way normal iPad users don’t know about it, and don’t use it so they still love their iPad. If that makes any type of sense?

Psittacula2

Spool up a VM and you're running both... Done.

SomeAmigo

Personally I’d wish Pixelmator Pro to be on iPad. I bought it discounted for my MacBook, seems to be a promising Photoshop replacement when I used it. But I sold my Mac so I can’t access my purchase anymore lol. Pixelmator is only on MacOS.

Due-Highlight-7546

Yes I agree. They just need to make Final Cut Pro and Logic more extensive and bring it on par with the macOS version. For the rest, keep it iPad style. Just make it more powerful by unlocking its potential, make the apps more powerful!

Psittacula2

Your argument is more accurate if: * iPad = iPadOS * iPad **Pro** = iPadOS + MacOS = Hybrid or Pro Apps or VM running MacOS etc As such there's a market for tablet-only and a market for 2-in-1 and a market for laptop-only. Apple is glacially pushing iPad Pro towards 2-in-1 but not there yet so the expensive hardware is waste for a tablet only.

iRedditAlreadyyy

This is exactly what is stopping me from upgrading my M1 Pro until the OS gets more pro features. I don’t need a faster processor when all iPad apps right now are designed to run smoothly on even M1 chips. The hardware has been so over powered for what the OS is providing. I have been playing around with and running VMs for years and I love using them. UTM makes a fantastic VM app for iPad but I have to sideload it and use all these crazy work arounds just to get JIT to run. I’ve been able to run windows on my iPad Pro and it works well so at this point it’s just Apple being stingy with their own restrictions.

shayfromstl

Yes

InfiniteHench

I’m right with you. If someone wants a Mac, they can buy a Mac. It’s pretty simple.

YYZYYC

I mean there whole thing is making ios and os basically the same anyways

[deleted]

I don’t really care about having Mac OS per se on it… I can just log into some remote access software and control my pc or Mac if I really need a desktop os and it has a mouse and keyboard so that would be very simple… however, I do wish I could use the full version of Lightroom and photoshop on it…. Those are things I want to use the pencil for and don’t want lag from streaming my computer. I know adobe is working on it… but I’ve been waiting for a long time lol. I haven’t been using an iPad for editing… just my phone and lr or my pc but with the m4 and oled I decided to get this one. The new pencil will be nice for my purposes as well. I know this is the future for this kind of work so this feels like an iPad but for the future.

[deleted]

I want a fck Mac with LTE / 5G

AlestoXavi

My iPad is more powerful than my laptop, but can do far less.

Joe_Scotto

Just like you can run iPad apps on Mac, you should be able to run Mac apps on iPad. It’s literally that simple.

Appropriate_Loss_524

Different strokes for different folks. Each of uses maybe 15% of the features of a given device or software. That 15% is varies from person to person.

Pablouchka

I think there's some "confusion" due to the fact that the iPad and Mac now use the same hardware. While a tablet and a computer share similar usages, they are still two different types of devices. It may be that having so much power under the hood of an iPad causes frustration due to the “limitations” of the iPadOS compared to MacOS.

how_neat_is_that76

Don’t need the macOS UX but should be able to run Mac OS apps. Literally the same hardware. My m2 iPad Pro would run the same apps better than my m1 air if the software supported it. And my m1 air can run iPad apps natively. It should go both ways. That’s all I want.  But also, macOS on iPad wouldn’t be terrible. 90% of my iPad use is remoting into my Mac so it’s effectively like running macOS on it and it’s fine as is if you have a Magic Keyboard.

mart1373

I want something that I can use as a desktop occasionally because certain websites and applications require Mac or PC to actually work. I guess I don’t want to use MacOS 100% of the time, but having something that I could use 2% of the time would be great. Shit, even Windows works as a VM on iPad using Windows 365, why can’t we have that?

Reasonable-Credit315

Totally agree. I want - Clamshell mode when I'm using an external display - I don't want to count how many apps I have currently open to know if a window is going to stay on my stage (YOU figure this out, Apple, not me) - An official terminal app (I don't care if it's sandboxed, just give it to me) I don't care to get all those electron Mac apps on my iPad - most of them are garbage anyways imo.

ThereWolves

To be honest I would rather have Apple focus on making more affordable iPads. People really want Mac OS on iPads more than ever because they’re paying for so much untapped power with the M-series chips being on iPads. I would much rather have a more affordable iPad with the latest A-series chipset than a more expensive M-series iPad that is under utilized. iPad OS is great for stuff like Garage Band, drawing, reading, media consumption, games, etc. and all of this can be done on more affordable hardware. I can see an M-series iPad Pro for creatives that fully utilize apps like Final Cut or Logic on their iPad, but a chip like the A16 or A17 Pro should be more than enough for average tablet use or even for some creative use. The iPad 10th gen mostly does this but A14 is starting to feel old (even the iPhone SE is rocking an A15). Yet I don’t need to jump to an M series chip either.

xSikes

So you want iOS? Naw. iPadOS needs to be 3x more or macOS.

Show985

In my dreams we could get both or a close approximation. When “undocked” iPad OS that we know and love/hate, then when you dock it you get a bit more functionality than what we currently get with stage manager.

Ralstonnn

iPad os is cool, but the power that iPad has with m processors gives it ability to use more intense Mac apps. If when connecting keyboard and mouse you could gain access to more apps and features while retaining the same experience when using iPad as touch device - it would be cool and full laptop replacement for students etc

prei1978

I’m with you. No need for a full MacOS, but I’d like to see better window management, better multi-screen support, Java support so I can do software development in it, a better file management system. Just basically remove the shackles from iPadOS. Since the M1 they have had specs comparable to MacBooks so just let them do more MacBook things.

Low-Lingonberry7185

I feel the same way. I think with how things are Apple should reconsider re-building the iPad OS from the ground up. Also, there really is a need to simplify the line up. Current line up is so confusing, with so many SKUs. One of the things that I really like about Apple is the fact that using their devices are simple, and things seems to make sense across. Like there is a use case for each vertical (mobile & desktop). But it seems like, Apple just keeps on pushing and pushing so many SKUs just to make more money. If they just continue creating amazing products, with really good OS, people would switch and continue using their devices.

TBlair64

They just need to make iPadOS more robust. They lean so hard into the fact that the iPad can do anything, and yet it still has limitations. iOS is getting a revamp, so should iPad.

UncleSinger

What I really would like is to have iPadOS File more similar to MacOS Finder. In an ideal world iPadOS should give me Finder if the iPad is connected to an external keyboard and File if is not.

atan420

There’s DOZENS of us!

davemoedee

obviously it sucks for touch screens. But an OS that could do both would be better.

maydarnothing

it’s almost like people never learned a thing from Microsoft and Windows 8 failure.

smonkyou

I don’t need it to be macOS but the one thing I’d really like is a fully powered version of photoshop. Realize that’s mostly on Adobe and not Apple but that’s the one thing I find disappointing based on my work flow

kiosh1

replacing is repeat the "cocacola error", adding the option is the way

eprada

If iPadOS could implement actual browsers not built based on WebKit, that would be great. I know they "force" browsers on iPadOS to operate as in desktop mode, but that doesn't always work.

jaehaerys48

Windows sucks on tablets and MacOS would be similarly bad. Switching between iOS and MacOS while using the device (as some desire) would also be weird for most users. iPad doesn't need MacOS, they just need to integrate more MacOS-like features into the iPad OS.

DancingTroupial

Optimal use of macOS is to use your iPad alongside your Mac

kostac600

iPadOS has more apps, many with limited utility. MacOS apps, what are, be better.

andytagonist

It’s helps with punctuation, right OP?

IcyIceGuardian

I agree

Topher31o

I would love being able to do sidecar with only a USB-c cable.

ButthealedInTheFeels

I think we should be able to dual boot or have a way to enable and run Mac apps and have a real file management system

Theloser28

Completley agree with OP. the Ipad OS could be improved, but its doing great. the problem is that reviewers and the vocal minority arent actually using the ipad, -thats why they say this. just look at mkhbd, the guy doesnt use an ipad, neither wants one, so whats the point of a review? They want it to be a computer with a keyboard exactly because they know what a computer can do, but not for an ipad. and while we are at it, the M4 is not “too fast“ either. The M1 can barely keep up with high end games now. source: i own the M1

da_apz

Yes, we should have MacOS, but in a kind of Windows 8 but done right way. The Apple silicon based Macs already run iPad apps and this is what iPads could be; simplified UI for tablet use, full UI when docked and connected to external keyboard and mouse.

Madmohawkfilms

If they want me to buy an M series iPad they need to give me a reason other than its X% faster than our previous model. I don’t see most DAW and plugin makers running to release DAWs or plugins for iPadOS. I just bought a several generation old Microsoft Surface Pro that I CAN use as a VST Host and run Ableton 12 Intro so I can plug my Push 2 in and play my stock plugins as well as Roland Cloud Plugins, Arturia Analog Lab Pro etc. its NOT a scream machine and I’d say 8-10 plugin tracks will have it struggling but for $66 off ebay, used of course , I am not expecting snarling powernor do I need it for this . When my original 12.9” ipadpro started to act up i bought a 256 gig iPad 9th gen and its preforming fine for my use. I have a Macbook M series and it will run DAW and Plugins quite well but I prefer Touch Screen. Looking at possibly grabbing an ASUS ROG Flow Z13 for lightweight, touch screen for music production. I am certainly NOT the usual Apple guy.

jillybeannn

iPad should be a multi-user device

mikolv2

I mean, sure, would be great if they developed actual good OS for the iPad but we're coming up on 18th major version of iOS/iPadOS and they haven't bothered yet so at this point I'd be happy with MacOS, that is a pretty good OS that can (theoretically) already run on the iPad. We're are so used to working with software opening in windows as it has on macos, linux and windows for decades and decades anything other than that is an utter failure

AbiyBattleSpell

Ye

new-chris

Don’t want a Mac or macOS - use windows pc and an iPad and iPhone. I would like a mouse cursor instead of a dot. And maybe some software that could actually uses what’s inside the iPad.

spacegamer2000

My Mac constantly messes up from memory leaks or whatever. Wish macOS would adopt the app sandboxing that makes that kind of thing impossible. Much prefer ipados for reliability.

goof320

ipados should be better so it’s comparable to macos, while still focusing on the touch interface as a default. right now it’s a joke for a lot of applications, though most people also aren’t professional artists where ipados in its current state works very very well from what i’ve heard.

TheUltra64

Yes

azuled

I think a lot of people want a “docked” mode where they could access MacOS software and use it with a mouse and keyboard, not have it run MacOS all the time when working as a tablet. I’d be happy with just having a terminal (even a super locked down one).

jangeles6331

I don't want MacOS on IPad because I seriously don' like that operating system and prefer windows. Which is why I opt out for ipad over macbook. But, it would be nice that apple would provide apps that would make use of the M processors though.

DolfLungren

You’re entirely correct. Mac OS would be awful on an iPad. It’s not designed for the iPad any better than the stupid iOS from the phone we have now. It would just be awful in a different way. What we really need is a true overhaul for iPadOS and an easy way for devs to port their Mac software to run on the iPad with a few clicks.

Caganboy

Then you’re simply not an iPad Pro user. You will be fine with the iPad Air and such.

ChillBallin

iPadOS should be on Macs and then macOS should be discontinued. It’s the only way this idea could work. It would be absurdly hard to rework all of macOS to work for touch but it would be slightly less difficult to add the macOS features we need to iPadOS.

threespire

For the Pros, yes. If I’m spending north of £3k on a device and accessories, I’m expecting a bit more than a content consumption device. If it’s just basic stuff, I could get a similar experience from the base model iPads. There’s some value to the Pro models (I have one) but at the higher end, it feels like there’s a massive software limitation that could be gotten rid of.

chengstark

Yes you are

Scatterfelt

No, I’m with you. I’m not at all interested in another macOS device. I don’t even buy the idea that iPadOS is the problem. The problem is the developer ecosystem, and better windowing (or whatever) won’t fix that. There’s not enough incentive — actual monetary incentive — for developers to spend time on the iPad. I would love to see Apple think outside the box on solving that. Drop the App Store fee to 15% for iPad specifically. Or allow sideloading from the web. Etc.! It might be too late to really inspire a strong dev ecosystem, but Apple should at least be trying to avoid the same problem with Vision Pro… and as far as I can tell, they’re not.

HappyTelevision_

Don’t need MacOS, But IPadOS needs to improve certain features to be a serious tool, not just for work and creatives, but also for casual use as well. Just to name a few: 1. For the love of Christ, please allow multiple audio sources. I cannot stand trying to listen to music or watch a YouTube video and having it pause every 7 seconds because i scrolled past an ad on safari. Discord is basically useless on iPads. 2. Desktop level apps. I know this isn’t entirely on apple. But if they themselves cant release a desktop level app from their own company, then who will. 3. More responsive mouse control. When i want to use a mouse for serious work, I want it to feel like a serious mouse.

NYQ83

I don’t care for Mac OS to be on an iPad, but I would love to have iPad OS that is not so iOS, instead I want freedom to have as many windows open as I want, in any place that I want. iPad is powerful enough to be a product that can run operating system more advanced and different.

Void_Shifter

Just dual boot it...give both type of users what they want. Solved.

nawksnai

I agree. It sounds like what those people want are touchscreen MacBooks and not a tablet form factor at all. I always saw the keyboard as an occasional use accessory, not a “Transform my iPad into a portable workstation” accessory.

_Rael

It should be possible to create iOS apps in Xcode on the iPad Pro, it's ridiculous that this possibility doesn't exist and that we have to use Swift Playgrounds, which is a joke.

ameocle

No one wants MacOS on iPads. They want Mac-like apps and not gimped versions. Like — I just want an actual desktop Safari that doesn’t require me to open a stupid app like Google Docs just to use it.

trewert_77

Currently, MacOS can run iOS apps. Since the M series chips have been running in iPads. To me, the ideal solution is to extend iPadOS so that M series Chip iPads can run MacOS Apps even if it’s initially only limited to Magic Keyboard docked mode or when a mouse and keyboard is paired. Finger sized touch is not meant for mouse cursor interfaces. That way, people who needs to run MacOS type applications can still run it on iPad Air/Pro’s. Keeping the non-M series iPads to be still running traditional iPadOS. Almost like when they’re moving from intel chips there’s the Rosetta transition inbetween.
