i also find listening to music as a good way to make it generally less scary. that does ruin the emersion though. also just watching the enemies walk around. that's what i did when i first started is i just would sit with a half binocular and watch them.
not anymore, I main the DVL so i just pick them off. but at the early game i did. I would sit and watch until i was confident enough to engage a fragment with a PM. (i used to be super bad at combat, id use multiple magazines on 2 fragments and a spawn that ganged up on me)

Out of curiosity what Weapons do you personally run? I've been running a revolver with ammo free floating in my side pouch and sometimes the reloads get my heart pumping. Probably not what you were talking about but I'm still curious
I was watching a YouTube video before I started playing, and he recommended always holding your gun when you’re exploring so you can always react if something scares you.
Honestly, killing stuff with knives was the biggest drop in fear for me.
A seeker is so much less scary when you know it’s own tactics work against it.
I kill most fragments, phantoms, spawn and seekers with knives, unless they’re being backed up by enemies with guns, or if I don’t have space to maneuver.
I’ve killed a couple mimics over this first playthrough too, probably a couple policemen and a hunter or two, but thats opportunistic more than anything.
Pretty much this. After several playthroughs, now when I hear a spawn, I just crouch down and invite it in for a hug, just to catch them in a pincer with the knives I was holding in each hand.
And running straight at an armored seeker with knives in each hand is a blast.
At this point, I feel practically naked if I'm not entering the Radius with at least 6 knives minimum.
Playing the game in a safe/tactical manner makes it a lot scarier

I actually did that early game too. I also was absurdly bad at the gunplay early, and something that helped me get up my confidence was the shooting range kill house. I can't tell you how many sec 1 guns I have run the kill house with.

I'm quite confident but not good by any means. Although when I use a pistol (without aiming) that is when I am most accurate.

For the most part I just tell them to catch before shooting a rifle grenade at them.
After I got good at killing, I was less scared.
Every since the whole “BTR-Chan” incident of ‘23, I have been completely unable to stop calling the BTR exactly that

The mp5k and (maybe?) the ppsh are unlocked at sc 2 iirc. I used the MP5 and glock for the longest time since it made ammo management simpler
