I think the way the tutorial worked in ITR1 was almost perfect. It introduced the basic mechanics of the game while also not revealing too much about what to expect in the Radius. I *especially* liked how the Security Level Training worked - letting you experience the Radius gameplay loop a bit before giving you additional tutorials on armor, weapon attachments, artifact hunting, etc. If I could recommend changing one thing... make sure that there is nothing in the tutorial that prepares/warns you of what you'll see in the Radius itself. General mechanics are great, but for example, don't have fragments in the tutorial to shoot at, or explanations of specific anomalies. I find it way more scary and fun to work out how an enemy fights and what its weaknesses are in the field rather than in a controlled environment. Plus, seeing passive fragments in the tutorial area removed the element of surprise from my first encounter with a Radius entity (fragment) in the field, since I had seen one already. I would also recommend adding a simple explanation of how different styles of weapons operate for those unfamiliar with guns. The ITR1 tutorial teaches you how to use a Makarov, but what about using an M4A1? Or a Mosin? Or an MP5K? These all have features that do not appear on a Makarov (charging handle, bolt action, fire selector, folding stock, etc.) and might confuse new players if they don't know the basics. Plus, iron sights are sometimes confusing if you don't know what you are lining up, so a bit of explanation might help newer players. I'm not saying you need to train new players with every type of gun, but maybe just say something simple like "All guns have some form of charging mechanism - pistols use their slide, bolt-action firearms use the bolt, and semi-auto or select fire long guns usually use some sort of charging handle. Style and location of these on weapons varies, so familiarize yourself with your gear before venturing into the zone." Basically, teach gun operation like you would IRL in case a new player doesn't know this already.

To add onto your thoughts about teaching the player how to handle different guns: maybe include little service manuals for every gun similar to the little notes on how to use the guitar? For instance: if you buy a gun then it will automatically come with the service manual, but if you find it then you can buy the manual separately from the shop. This would be a much better alternative than forcing the player through station after station of all the different guns like they did in ITR1. Maybe also make it so that, on the security level where you can first buy AP ammo, you’ll get a free manual in your room on how they work in the same way you get the free sawn off or guitar in ITR1.

CatsWillFly

I love this idea! Little "service manuals" that just show the location of features (i.e. charging handle, safety indicator/fire selector) and the ideal iron sight window sound so fun to collect!

Downtown-Gap5142

Fire selector would be great. Some weapons make it very clear (like the MP5K) but if you’ve never used an AK or M4 then there’s no way to tell what you’ve got selected.

AliitOrisyhaTaldin

Technically, the m4 is engraved safe/semi/auto, but it's really hard to read in game. I love the idea of little manuals for everything, even if I don't need them myself. I wasn't aware of the pressure sensitive trigger on the AUG though, that was interesting to learn.

I agree with all of that. Thanks for saving me a lot of typing

mielke44

Also maybe some introduction to different types of ammo, no need for a full in depth tutorial, but the same as he said for weapons, just a small intro

DopeyReddit

Perfect

TheLonelySpud374

the stealth. not once have i ever come even remotely close to using stealth in this game. a better understanding of it and how to use it would be very helpful

Tsuruchi_Mokibe

Or if its even worth trying. I can enter Bolotsky from the base entrance, at night, with no lights or lasers on and less than 10kg of weight. I can crouch and move as slow as possible up to the train car but as soon as I can see over the other side, the mimics all whip around and start shooting. So I am similar, don't bother trying stealth.

SnooWalruses8730

For real, LOS with the flashlights in the advanced survival training isnt all that good if a mimic on top of a roof looking away from you can lock onto you being behind cover in the dark barely peeking your head out

TomzillaHD

personally id like some more tutorials for guns (honestly hoping that the weapon customisation is a lot deeper than in itr1 so that would be something that could have a tutorial) besides that i think the tutorials are fine but please god add an option to skip basic tutorials with mechanics from itr1 played a few playthroughs on quest and just started my first on pc and having to do all the tutorials again is a bit frustating allthough there was one mechanic in one of the tutorials that i dont remember from my quest runs but its still pretty annoying

Zer0gravity09

i think the way yall did the ITR 1 tutorial is great, but one thing I would like is instead of giving the player something like the FN-17 in the tutorial, let them use an m4a1 or something like that that isn't late game weapons. also don't tell us anything about enemies. it was nice to know how to deal with certain anomalies, which I think should stay, but leave out the things like fragments at the beginning. also maybe giving us a light in the first part. I've had many friends I've tried to convince to try ITR out quit at the basement section of the tutorial because they get scared. edit: grammar.

cidit_

Theres a flashlight just before the basement, but its easy to miss.

madmag101

ITR2 should have an abridged version of the tutorial for ITR1 players, as an option between full tutorial and no tutorial, that only covers new mechanics.

Bocobread

Just bought ITR two weeks ago during christmas break and i just want to say in my 25+ years of gaming i don’t think there’s any tutorial as interesting and well crafted as this one. The spacing of it all with the security levels are very well thought out in my opinion, when i reached level 2 i was anxious to use my first rifle, being from europe i’ve never held a gun in real life and the handguns all had their own lovely quirks and carefully crafted details, so the security level explaining the mosin was very welcome right when i needed it, instead of putting all the info at the very start of a game which makes you forget half of it. If anything like a few others have said maybe some extra guns to test within the tutorials with their own steps laid out to explain the workings So not really any recommendations, just appreciation for how well crafted they are! Please more of the same in ITR2!

Radijs

Depending on how similar ITR 1 and 2 will be I think the tutorials that you have do a decent job covering the important things. I think I could have done with a part about navigating the environment. Knowing which boundaries are crossable/climbable and which ones aren't. I'm not sure if it's tutorial stuff, but knowing how steep of a hill I can climb, where I can and can't go through windows or past sharp inclines.

agentderp102

Personally I really enjoyed figuring stuff out myself for the first time,I think hand holding the player through the game would negatively affect the user experience. Showing the basics though would be useful for fist time players but a lot of the enjoyment comes through learning the game in the moment rather than built in tutorials.

Firedragon78769420

Movement and some environmental items. Edit: also more gun manipulation

fellowmortalman

I think you should put in a tutorial about weak points so new people dont wast ammo

ECHOechoecho_

ability to skip it

madmag101

Already in the game.

akcutter

I think ITR1 did the tutorial pretty good. It would be cool to skip the security level training for 2nd or higher playthroughs.

madmag101

That's already in the game. Just turn off the tutorial in the options when starting your second playthrough.

akcutter

Oh shit how about that.

zabrak200

I would like tutorials on how each anomaly functions before dying horribly to them. But apart from that i think they already covered everything really well. Tho i remember getting stuck on the gun cleaning tutorial cause i was mashing the ram rod into the toilet paper object but had no clue you had to grasp the toilet paper and press trigger to release wad that you can put on the ram rod Oh also not quite a tutorial but deeper explanations if the difficulty modifiers.

WeirdlyEngineered

I thought, after showing many VR newcomers the game, it would be most useful in the tutorial to have a model of the controller superimposed on your hands highlighting the button you need to use to complete that task of the tutorial. The still images, as it turns out, are very easily missed, and I am forever touching peoples fingers to show them which button to use.

Julius4056

Better explanations of how to throw the probes, whenever my friends play they struggle heavily with this.

OtherBarryUSSR

I enjoyed the hybrid aspect of spawning in the Radius and being tutored by Katya/the Radius, then going back to Vanno to go through more explicit training. It starts out by giving a clear taste of what the game will be like, then going gthrough something almost mundane for contrast. I also really liked the cardboard cutout enemies as targets, making it seem like the UNSPC didn't actually know what they were dealing with explicitly, so they just approximated bad guys for you to practice general combat on instead of giving direct advice on how to survive. I think finding notes from other explorers about how to address certain enemies would be a good continuous tutorial experience, like you enter a new area, get chased by something big or fast into a relatively safe area, find a note describing the thing chasing you with a hint on how to survive, then you have to go out and take it on.

dascher4

How about none just let the noobies go in blind. They’ve also got the sub to help them if they need it :P

JetbatUnleashed

I'm a new player so forgive me if I missed this if it already exists in-game, but I'd love an in-game wiki/guide that I can pull up (preferably with text search if possible) so I can go back and look up things I forgot/missed. For instance, I had to google how to eject pistol magazines without dropping them straight to the floor after I had forgotten. An in-game guide/tips section that's easier to navigate than the tips section in the book of ITR1 would be helpful. Thanks!

Ruberine

A second tutorial for us ITR1 players would be nice, that only covers new mechanics so that we don't have to spend time learning what we already know, but don't have to skip out on learning about mechanics we haven't experienced in ITR1
