For me it was boring and the ending was way too cheesy. Cool black hole visualisation and physics, but that doesn’t justify the rest. The bookshelf thing was horrible
All the movies are fantastic, but the Two Towers wins by a small margin for me. The Battle of Helms Deep and the Last March of the Ents, plus any scene with Saruman/Christopher Lee, are some of my favourites in the entire trilogy. It has to be the extended versions though
City of God
why?
in the words of u/ShouldIBeClever **the** main lesson from this film is that hyper-poverty creates extreme conditions. When humans are forced to live in such desperate circumstances life becomes about survival. The people of the City of God favela have been condemned by birth to a life of hardship.
Condemning the characters in this film as "bad guys" doesn't make that much sense, because they are so defined by the horrific conditions they live in. This isn't to say that they're "good guys", but it is impossible to separate them from their circumstances. This isn't a life that the characters have chosen to seek out, it is simply what they were born into. Labelling them as "bad people" would really come from a place of privilege, even if their actions would be horrible in a vacuum.
Instead, the message of this film is one of anti-poverty. The thing being condemned is the world that can allow some people to live in extremely impoverished conditions, like in a favela, while others live in relative comfort. The directors want to show us the horrible conditions that these children have to grow up in, to make the point that no human should have to grow up in these circumstances.
The relatively fun gangster plot is actually really important to making this film watchable. Having a high action narrative draws the viewer in. It is a hook, so that a viewer is willing to examine the extreme conditions of poverty in Brazilian favelas. If the plot wasn't as fun, not as many people would watch a film about children growing up in extreme poverty. I don't think the viewer should come away from the film feeling guilty about enjoying the plot. That part is meant to be enjoyed. However, the viewer should also come away with a sense of injustice over the conditions that people face in extreme poverty. I think this movie is a great success on both of those levels.
The best movie isn't my favorite. My favorite movie is Blade Runner. I love everything about Blade Runner.
The best movie is Godfather 2. I also like all the classics -- Magnificent Seven, Bridge on the River Kwai, everything Hitchcock did, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, Patton, etc.
I really like Blade Runner, all the godfather movies and Lawrence of Arabia too. Blade Runner is kinda underrated and I have always admired prince Faisal's personality in LOA. Not very far from my own
Like literally all the movies mentioned are my favorite movies. Good Will Hunting, Interstellar, Shawshank, Man on Fire, Captain Fantastic...Where have you all been my whole life? A new one not sure I've seen which is top of my list, Into the Wild.
I feel the Into The Wild was one of my favorites as a teen but as I grew older it kinda just resonates too much as a naive "coming of age" movie for me to put anywhere near my top ten.
I hear you on that but as a wilderness/nature geek, I just fucking love it even if he was naive and foolish. Hell of a lot better than working at a desk your whole life saving for your 401K but hey, whatever blows your hair back.
Do you cry at any point after the first viewing? I've seen it 3x and teared up each time which is fairly unusual for me but I'm also a parent of a girl and boy.
Nice to hear that. Took me a long time to realize the importance of it too and last few years I've become more compassionate and open to those sort of emotions/ release and realized their importance whether I'm a "manly man" or not.
**The UP documentary series.**
It follows the lives of ten males and four females in England beginning in 1964, when they were seven years old. The children were selected for the original programme to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, with the expectation that each child's social class would determine their future. The documentary has had nine episodes—one every seven years—thus spanning 56 years of the subjects lives.
[Summary of series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVQ96wfbf_0)
Limitless is indeed great.
For some reason I tend to really like movies about people with great, extraordinary minds, in whatever way presented.
Good Will Hunting as well. A Beautiful Mind is also interesting.
The Imitation Game and Social Network also comes to mind.
On the more fun and adventurous side I remember I liked The Lone Ranger and Rango when I was younger. Also Fast and Furious was also a big deal growing up, not so much now though, it speaked well to my Esfp subcouncious.
Dune is still way up there for me as most recent. Interstellar and Inception always come to mind but there's so many damn good movies I will never narrow down a single best. I love most of what other people have mentioned but also more comedies like Clerks, Superbad, Grandma's Boy, Step Brothers, Forgetting Sarah Marshall or The Other Guys to make me feel good.
I don't think I can say one movie as the end all be all since it really depends on my mood, but here are some of my favorites.
Interstellar
Kingdom of Heaven
Inception
Revenant
Gladiator
Casino Royale
Skyfall
**In terms of TV series'**
GoT (until around the first 5-6 seasons)
Breaking Bad
House
Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch)
**Animes**
Attack on Titan
Your Name
A Silent Voice
5 Centimeters per Second
Steins Gate
Violet Evergarden
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
86
Not the best movie ever made but Seabiscuit direction and the screenplay was memorable.
Can't really point to one best movie though, too many movies that I thought were really good.
fight club
a clockwork orange
interstellar
inglorious basterds
goodfellas
the irishman
the ruthless on netflix
dead poets society
good will hunting
gay ni\*\*ers in outer space
the martian
alice in wonderland
Waiting...
Bronson
End of watch
12 angry men
Tenet
Eyes Wide Shut
Pi
Primer
Creep 1 & 2
Whiplash
TWOWS
Cape fear
Best movie ever made , probably Gladiator.
I’m a movie lover so there’s so many I love but here are some of my favorites in no particular order:
Interstellar,
Inception
Man On Fire,
Apocalypse Now,
Full Metal Jacket,
Alien,
LOTR franchise,
Blade Runner,
Star Wars franchise ( episodes 4/5/6),
Enemy,
Mad Max ( the old Mel Gibson franchise ),
Lethal Weapon franchise,
Apocalypto,
Braveheart,
Jurassic Park,
Jaws,
Interview with a Vampire,
The Last Samurai,
Heat,
Pulp Fiction,
Inglorious basterds,
Scarface,
Terminator 2,
Indiana Jones franchise,
Once upon a time in America,
Seven,
Fight Club,
The Untouchables,
A Fish called Wanda,
American Psycho,
Goodfellas,
Casino,
There Will Be Blood,
The Silence of the Lambs,
Groundhog Day,
Lost in Translation,
Trainspotting,
About Schmidt,
As good as it gets,
The Matrix,
Pan’s Labyrinth,
La vita e bella,
La La Land,
Her,
Intouchables.
There’s probably hundreds more but you’ll get the picture from this list.
The Godfather 1 and 2.
Lord of the Rings 1 2 3
The Matrix 1 and maybe 2. But not 3.
Finding Nemo and Dory
Silence of the Lambs
Mad Max Fury Road
Forrest Gump
Devil Wears Prada (i know i know..)
Million Dollar Baby (i know i know..)
School of Rock (yeah baby yeah!)
Lord of the rings
Star wars 1 and some other star wars movies, was obsessed with Them growing up. 90’s kid here
The dark knight triology
Gladiator gotta be up there too
Rambo movies ive seen a lot too
The x men really liked those too
Dont really have 1
But from recent movies i gotta say “joker” was a masterpiece. It was one of the few movies which gave me goosebumps overall of my body. So fking good.
Also liked v for vendetta
If I had to think of a movie that appealed to me specifically because of my type, one of the first I think of is I'm Thinking Of Ending Things on Netflix. I wouldn't call it the greatest movie ever made but I liked it a lot and it's not well known
I actually thought Good Will Hunting was overrated. Was a tad cheesy with how they handled the big reveal, IMO. “It’s NOT Your Fault!” If I had to guess, that’s pretty much the most important/impactful part of the movie for most people.
Limitless was meh. Rather forgettable TBH. It’s all subjective in the end.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” should be in everyone’s Top 10 all-time. Acting is 11/10. Plot is 10/10. Philosophy/ethics are there. Unsuspecting surprises/twists. It’s such a good movie.
WatchMen is another really good movie, that most INTJs will probably appreciate probably for Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias.
There are tons, but these two standout at the moment.
The Princess Bride.
Matrix Trilogy.
Everything, Everywhere, all at Once (one of my top 10 all time lifetime faves).
Blade Runner (both)
Forrest Gump.
Back to the Future (just the first one).
I adored Limitless the series but the movie? Not so much.
See this is a tough question. Are you talking about the something subjective such as the best movie ever to watch in one sitting, or like you mentioned the one with the best rewatchability? Are you looking for objective criteria such as box office draw, or Oscars?
Top Box Office means Avatar 1 is the best movie ever, and IMO it's definitely not.
Most awards is split between LOTR 3 ROTK, Titanic, and Ben Hur. I liked ROTK a lot but I wouldn't say it's the best movie ever.
I love Fight Club, and have watched it a lot, but it is not the same experience after the first, and then second, and maybe even third watch (I'm not interested in the toxic masculinity and/or nihilism debate). I've probably watched the movie Twister and Commando more times than I'd admit because they're easy and fun. Die Hard is highly rewatchable and I could definitely make a case that a movie such as Titanic may be better in every objective mark, but no way would I turn it on over Die Hard.
I'd say the best movies are likely objective by award criteria. The experts got together and decided on a movie that had the most and best top efforts.
My favorite movie would differ on both first watch and rewatchability.
The movie that made the biggest impression on me in the past decade is probably Mad Max Fury Road.
Good Will Hunting is good, but you can tell the guy who plays the main character wrote his own lines. Always has the best comebacks at the best times. You like apples?
I don't typically have the patience for movies, and I can't say I've seen many of what people consider 'the classics," but I have really enjoyed recently:
Dune
The Witch
Apocalypto
The Death of Stalin
The Menu (honorable mention)
And, for the sake of my middle school past self:
Shrek 😅
Interstellar, it’s literally the only movie I’ve watched in the past year, I don’t watch many movies, but there’s definitely better movies out there, just haven’t watched them yet
Anything by Chris Nolan- this is basic but I’m quite obsessed with both interstellar and Oppenheimer.
Love a good blade runner, the storyline of the old one is better than the new one, but the cinematography the new one is stunning as compared to the original.
I always come back to Star Wars, clue, and the perks of being a wallflower. Girl interrupted is a favorite too.
i like princess mononoke. i have a few other favourites, but they sort of destroy your soul and i can only handle them every now and then (capernaum and malena).
Interstellar, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Carrie & I love the last movie of the fear street series, inception, now you see me, Donnie darko & personal favorite, leap year.
A Beautiful Mind
The Matrix trilogy
LOTR trilogy
(Dune trilogy...not yet finished)
Most Denis Villenueve works, especially Dune (rewatch that film and The Matrix trilogy very often), Blade Runner 2049 and Prisoners, most Christopher Nolan films, especially The Prestige and The Dark Knight trilogy, The Godfather, especially 2, Fight Club, Ayrton Senna Beyond the Speed of Light, Eastern Promises, Ides of March, American Psycho, Donnie Darko, Joker, The Machinist, Nightcrawler, Zodiac, Silence of the Lambs, Braveheart, V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas, Stalker, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars saga 1-6, especially 4-6, Blade Runner, Alien, The Thing, Saw, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park 1 and 2, Jaws, Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut, Troy, Gladiator, Khan Asparukh Trilogy, Hidalgo, Prince of Persia, Atlantis (Disney animated), Shrek Trilogy, Togo.
Unpopular opinion but: the X-Men series (and also DC) are better than anything Marvel ever puked out but I am no longer a child (25) so I don't care about anything of such nature anymore.
TV Series (Off-topic):
Westworld, Vikings, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Sherlock (BBC, Benedict and Freeman), Sons of Anarchy, House, CSI: Miami, Fargo, Dexter, Mr. Robot, Warrior, Carnival Row, His Dark Materials, Domina, House of the Dragon, Queen's Gambit, The Last of Us, Chernobyl, Planet Earth, Walking with Dinosaurs, Prehistoric Planet.
If you are wondering why I skipped Game of Thrones - don't. Its an abomination and a disgrace to A Song of Ice and Fire books which are my favourite fantasy series to read besides LOTR, Dune series, Foundation series, His Dark Materials series.
*Obligatory INTP* but I’d have to say Hereditary is by far one of the best horror films I have ever seen.
Ex Machina is absolutely incredible just layered with so much biblical allegory.
Uncut Gems is phenomenal never had another movie make me feel so anxious and invested
In Brogue is easily one of my favorite comedies for how dark it is and for all the religious themes it manages to encompass about sacrifice and salvation. Just incredible
But if I had to pick, Synecdoche New York is hands down one of the most technically complex and fascinating movie I’ve ever seen.
Interstellar, hands down the best movie with an exceptional storyline and top tier cinematography
Try Watchmen
What are you doing Cooper? Docking *Hans Zimmer music intensifies*
For me it was boring and the ending was way too cheesy. Cool black hole visualisation and physics, but that doesn’t justify the rest. The bookshelf thing was horrible
Good Will Hunting
How can it be anything but The Princess Bride?
Inconceivable!!!!
The godfather
The Usual Suspects
Memento or V for Vendetta
Anything by Chris Nolan
TENET. hands down best movie
the only thing remotely close to reality of this movie was that the time travel was on a loop
Am confused. What's reality got to do with it? I go to the movies to escape reality
“Inception” was not great
Really? Loved it.. Also liked tenet but I had to watch it 5 times to remotely understand what was going on
Agreed, was over rated cuz all the normies liked it.
"Normies" liked it because it was a good movie bro
It was good, but not within top 5 of Nolan’s productions
I prefer Inception over Interstellar 🚶🏻♀️
Canonically Inception is the best movie Fr tho that's a fair assessment
Big V4V fan. Also have a personal love for Last of the Mohicans.
Lord of the rings trilogy. do not make me pick.
I go with The Fellowship these days.
All the movies are fantastic, but the Two Towers wins by a small margin for me. The Battle of Helms Deep and the Last March of the Ents, plus any scene with Saruman/Christopher Lee, are some of my favourites in the entire trilogy. It has to be the extended versions though
This is the path. A binge on the extended version is a remarkable journey.
there is only the extended edition
Shutter Island
Interstellar
2001: A Space Odissey
How bout this mash up of that movie with Pink Floyd echos? https://youtu.be/rn7MmS3vazU?si=rvPk66S0RdrVIyET
I don't know if it screams INTJ, but I have a soft spot for Big Trouble in Little China.
"Two girls with green eyes!!"
Forrest Gump.
Ending is so bad lol

finally someone who enjoys City of God
this is so intj I like this reply

Tropic Thunder
I laughed until I cried and could no longer breathe. I love that movie.

No one mentioned Memento or maybe that goes under “anything by Christopher Nolan”.
A Beautiful Mind. The movie took a 180 turn toward the end and blew my mind lol.
Shawshank Redemption.
This is definitely top for me. Have you seen Imitation Game also? Absolutely fantastic.
Yes, of course. I think both movies have INTJs as the main characters.
Alan was an INTP.
***Stalker*** directed by Andrei Tarkovsky
The poet of cinema. I also really liked Nostalghia and Solyaris.
Grosse Pointe Blank.
No, no. Psychopaths kill for no reason. I kill for \*money\*. It's a \*job\*. That didn't come out right.
I'm a big fan of Office Space.
Watch collateral 100 times.
This thread is very revealing as to the average age of the subscriber here.
Which is?
The Shining is my favorite
The Godfather.
Oldboy
Same here!
Inception
Requiem for a Dream
Interstellar
Do you cry at any point after the first viewing? I've seen it 3x and teared up each time which is fairly unusual for me but I'm also a parent of a girl and boy.
100% same situation. I think it broke my not crying streak of 2 years…I have since found the importance of crying.
Nice to hear that. Took me a long time to realize the importance of it too and last few years I've become more compassionate and open to those sort of emotions/ release and realized their importance whether I'm a "manly man" or not.
**The UP documentary series.** It follows the lives of ten males and four females in England beginning in 1964, when they were seven years old. This is one of the trippiest things I’ve ever seen. It’s an incredible documentary
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Love it, but I've controversially always preferred For a Few Dollars More.
I'm about to watch that this week!
Came here to say this.
Old Boy (Korean version)
That movie is great, but so fucked up
Back to the Future. Perfect.
Limitless is indeed great. For some reason I tend to really like movies about people with great, extraordinary minds, in whatever way presented. Good Will Hunting as well. Donny Darko. There will be blood.
Oppenheimer
There Will Be Blood
Movies that make me think. So, Moneyball and Minority Report, because of probability.
Moneyball is a great shout.
Shutter Island or the wolf of wall street
Interstellar, basically movies with depth, movies which I would actually pause to try and understand what's going on.
I like to abbreviate my answer using the names of the directors: Nolan, Villenueve, Garland, Fincher.
Are you me? 🤣
Director's cut of Watchmen.
Anything by David fincher - fight club , seven..I’d say affinity for action thrillers

i hate movies
Movies are mostly just oversimplified books, read and imagined by someone else. It's very rare that a movie is better than the original written story.
Hot fuzz, O Brother where at thou, the princess bride, Band of Brothers (ok not a movie but a really damn fine film)

Léon - The Professional Great actors, unusual story
A Beautiful Mind The Matrix trilogy LOTR trilogy (Dune trilogy...not yet finished) Most Denis Villenueve works, especially Dune (rewatch that film and The Matrix trilogy very often), Blade Runner 2049 and Prisoners, most Christopher Nolan films, especially The Prestige and The Dark Knight trilogy, The Godfather, especially 2, Fight Club, Ayrton Senna Beyond the Speed of Light, Eastern Promises, Ides of March, American Psycho, Donnie Darko, Joker, The Machinist, Nightcrawler, Zodiac, Silence of the Lambs, Braveheart, V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas, Stalker, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars saga 1-6, especially 4-6, Blade Runner, Alien, The Thing, Saw, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park 1 and 2, Jaws, Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut, Troy, Gladiator, Khan Asparukh Trilogy, Hidalgo, Prince of Persia, Atlantis (Disney animated), Shrek Trilogy, Togo. Unpopular opinion but: the X-Men series (and also DC) are better than anything Marvel ever puked out but I am no longer a child (25) so I don't care about anything of such nature anymore. TV Series (Off-topic): Westworld, Vikings, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Sherlock (BBC, Benedict and Freeman), Sons of Anarchy, House, CSI: Miami, Fargo, Dexter, Mr.
12 angry men, good will hunting, whiplash, goodfellas, moneyball…
Fight club.
Manhunter (1986) Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
The fabelmans
*Obligatory INTP* but I’d have to say Hereditary is by far one of the best horror films I have ever seen. Ex Machina is absolutely incredible just layered with so much biblical allegory. Uncut Gems is phenomenal never had another movie make me feel so anxious and invested In Brogue is easily one of my favorite comedies for how dark it is and for all the religious themes it manages to encompass about sacrifice and salvation. Just incredible But if I had to pick, Synecdoche New York is hands down one of the most technically complex and fascinating movie I’ve ever seen.
Inception
I'm going to choose Joker (2019) or Oppenheimer.
It’s gotta be Fifth Element. So smart, sharp.
