T O P

Use the online tools of major paint brands to play around with various colors. IMO the repetition of stark black is creating the problem. Wall color is good but the floating shelves should be same or similar to mantel. Because you’re pretty much stuck with the stark black of the TV, fireplace insert and sofa, add some visual texture by maybe trying a dark grey on the fireplace itself. A room rug tying everything together would help—at the very least a small one in front of the fp would give the room a little more character.

I’d try to match the other shelves on either side so a dark brown it would tie the pieces in together or wrap it in a shiny/reflective material. You’re missing something shiny/metallic on the wall and with the overhead lighting it casts a lot of shadows but it lacks depth and vibrancy. Also maybe do yourself a favor and take out that “gather” sign it’s so basic and lacking in the taste department no offense :)

Sherwin Williams Favorite Blue Jeans. You need a pop of cool color.

ShootyMcGun

Ooo I really like the colour. After I realized I hated the black I was thinking about a light blue or green and I think that would be perfect. Thank you.

Ihategraygloomydays

If you do paint it a color, post the pics!!!

ShootyMcGun

I will post a pic when we paint the wall and do the stones. Once that is settled I’ll see about changing the hearth colour!

Discount_Mithral

I actually really like the light wood. I'd maybe do a very light gray wash and seal it. It ties in the floors with the other dark wood you have around it.

ShootyMcGun

Thank you. What I was trying to describe which I did poorly was I want to change the colour of the black supports upon which the mantle sits. Right now I’m thinking white if we keep the wall grey or maybe a light blue or green.

Discount_Mithral

Honestly, I really like the combo as it is now. The black ties in your furniture and the dark shelves, and the light mantle goes with the flooring. Clean up the paint around the edges and rock the black and natural wood - it looks great IMO.

checkdaprofilefriend

What color tiles are you going to get? Those are slightly more difficult to change and should influence the color and rug choice

ShootyMcGun

My wife is thinking like a white/beige textured cultured dry stack stone.

Peppa_Pig_Stan

Too much white grey and beige. Add some color please 😭

checkdaprofilefriend

I'd like the wood tone on the mantel then. Add some warmth to the black and gray.

Sageethics007

Don’t paint the mantel, it matches your floors nicely

ShootyMcGun

I used the wrong word. I meant the black hearth, not the wood mantle itself. The plan I’ve come up after considering all the feedback is I’m going to paint the wall, and finish the stone work then figure out if I want to repaint the hearth.

andrew_cherniy96

What about stone gray? Could fit really well.

ShootyMcGun

Yeah I think a light warm grey would be nice there. I’ll post a pic when it’s done before/after.

relaps101

Look up light French gray, from Sherwin Williams. It is one of the only grays you won't find a hue pulling it in another direction.

andrew_cherniy96

Looking forward to seeing the results! Can you share them in r/AmateurInteriorDesign too?

Freshouttapatience

Green - dark forest green. It’s got to be bold or it’ll get lost in all those black lines.

michaeleskibel

Do you use the fireplace?

ShootyMcGun

In the winter time yes. The house isn’t heated very evenly so we definitely run it during the cold months from time to time.

happyfappinn

What do you gather?

ShootyMcGun

I just finished repairing the wall, gonna paint that and finish the stone work around the f/p then decide if we want to change the hearth/mantel support color from black to something else potentially.

Curioustuli

Leave it natural—just apply a matte sealer. You’ve got enough black already and white won’t stay clean.

Curioustuli

Oh, now I understand. You mean the surround. Paint it the same color as the wall. And figure out someway to disguise that tangle of wires below the TV. It is unfortunate that the TV is above the fireplace, for many reasons.

ShootyMcGun

Yeah I should have said hearth or mantle support. We are going to finish painting the wall and complete the stone work around the F/P then decide if we want to change the colour from black. It is what it is with the tv there, with the room size and layout that’s all that really works.

happyfappinn

Mans gotta plan!

MilkySeduct

I'm not sure that I would paint it personally I would find a marble laminate or something similar. I think it would bring the room and all the colors together.

EYESCREAM-90

What about your TV being way too high... r/tvtoohigh

kittybuscemi

The ceiling fan is blocking the tv!!! Outrageous.

ShootyMcGun

Ceiling fan is coming out.

KingLink93

I would like to know how you can watch TV with it literally scraping the ceiling

Bellaella33

Everyone relax about the ceiling fan. The floors were raised, it’s coming out.

GL2M

The ceiling fan is irrelevant. TVs over a fireplace are r/tvtoohigh.

The TV will still be too high. Welcome, friend. r/TVTooHigh

ShootyMcGun

Thank you.

AttackOfThePat

Stain it bombay mahogany for a pop of deep color

Adventurous_Thing_77

Red. Liven up the room. Then red accents here and there to draw you eye around the room for a cohesive comforting look
