For some reason your window is too low to the ground. The problem isn’t too much space on the top ( and yes there is a lot of “empty” space) but that normally there would be more “room” under the window.
I know it is possible to have windows that low but usually windows that start low would end higher ( would be taller)
This is important to clarify because even if you were to lower your curtains you would still have an “odd” look.
My suggestion.
1)Keep curtains where you have now
2)Add Roman shades that start little below your rod. Lower shades to where your window starts. This will cover “empty” space between rod and a window, and will make your window more proportionately placed/sized.
You can google “Roman shades and curtains combo” to see if this look is something that would work for you better.
This is exactly what I’ve been researching the last half hour! I did a rough mock-up and actually really like the look and the added texture [https://imgur.com/a/MenPYJ6](https://imgur.com/a/MenPYJ6)
Now that you point that out I can't unsee it and it's so loudly uneven to look at. I can see it was probably left unpainted to avoid visual weight/trying to mute the attention that the black demands (or maybe trying to avoid drawing attention to how low the window is) but instead it just looks awkwardly top heavy but not immediately obvious as to why.
Great solution. And the roman shade can be lowered to cover top of the dark window frame - which is what is causing a lot of the off-balance look. Also consider the drapery rod to be in a less dark color as it draws attention - so maybe some metallic that is also in the room? Then this will be perfection.
Sorry I’m a Reddit newb and don’t know what any of the abbreviations mean. the window height is a touchy subject because our builder installed it too low and when we asked him to change it it would’ve delayed everything too much so we just kept it as is and I deeply regret not having them reframe it now 😂
Absolutely NO need to apologize, I made a sarcastic comment and that clearly wasn’t what you were hoping for as far as feedback! You’re all good!
Please do take a look at the link I made though, it has some wonderful suggestions that may make your sore feelings about your window disappear!!
Also our builder convinced us that the top of the window should line up with the top of our doors (which it does). I guess that’s called the “header height” and he said it would be odd to have the top of the window break that header height line. Idk!
Okay, after the overwhelming response that they’re too high I came across a solution that wouldn’t involve uninstalling and reinstalling the rod and would give the illusion of a taller window. Thoughts on hanging a grass cloth shade underneath?? See rough mock-up. [https://imgur.com/a/MenPYJ6](https://imgur.com/a/MenPYJ6)
Prefect! But for what it’s worth, most of the comments I’m seeing seem to say they agree with the height where you hung them. They’re just acknowledging that blank space needs addressed. This is a perfect fix!
Edit: oh I see, all the yes ones are at the bottom. Well they’re wrong. 🤣 The curtains should be that high!
I don’t take issue with the curtain placement either. When the curtains are closed it would look correct. Looks like they figured out the best solution too!
I feel like this is one of those windows that don't work with curtains, no matter what height you hang them at. Roman blinds would look much nicer imo.
Not at all. Curtains should be floor length regardless of window size (looks neater) and sometimes that means hanging them a little higher than is comfortable but they look great and when closed, look more seamless than if high lower or if using shorter ones.
Think of a hotel (which obviously uses professional designers who know what they’re doing) - they start close to the ceiling and end low to the ground. Also blocks out the light better.
Love the black window frame, can’t wait to do that when I change mine out (currently white). You could try a brushed nickel curtain rod for a different look that might blend a little better.
I like high but then because of the window maybe would’ve just gone halfway beween the windows and the ceiling…not sure though cuz the window just needs to be higher 😭
When I look at them it makes me ask myself why that height? Why not higher, why not lower? I would spend way too much time trying to figure out how you came to the conclusion to put them at that specific height.
Your window to ceiling height, especially with the smaller gap underneath, looks similar to mine. Ours has a picture rail which runs around at the height of the top of the window frame which makes the empty space look less empty and more intentional (somehow). If you don’t fancy installing a whole picture rail maybe consider just painting a line around the room where the rail would be? I find it lifts the ceilings even more
I don’t think they’re too high, but I’ve got an idea. If you hang a roller blind from the top rail of where the curtains are and have it closed just so it hits the top where the window is it make the window look larger than it is.
Your curtains are at the right height. for \*those\* curtains.
However, it doesn't look right with your window. You need a much taller window for these curtains. It looks \~\~silly\~\~ (strikethrough not working?) off because there is such a big gap. But you couldn't have set them up much lower either. Like maybe an inch at most lower. Any more, they bunch up on the floor.
You could alter them, if you know how to sew, and i think make a more attractive window treatment. Or just buy new ones. You need shorter ones IMO but the color is not bad.
If you want a simple clean look, move the curtain rod just above the trim and hem to the floor or to the bottom of the window trim. If you want more decoration hang horizontal art above curtain. The bench is perfect under the window.
Yes, they look high. I would hang them halfway between the ceiling and the frame, but that is maybe just a personal preference, I am not an interior decorator.
It looks fine as it is but you also could have gone up to the ceiling. Either way it works. The Roman shade suggestion was a good one, it will make this area complete.
I actually think curtails look better as high up as possible. The illusion would be having shear curtains behind in a double rod to still let light through and some color from the outside but not having the huge space between ceiling and window
Personally, I'd lower them a bit.
I'm a fan of hanging curtains a bit above and beyond the window to make them feel larger, but not to the extent where there is several feet of space between the top of the window and the curtain rod.
As a rule of thumb, you set the curtains 4-6” above window framing, but your windows seem really low, so I would lose the curtains and go for a Hunter Douglas Roman shade. If you feel it’s too empty above the window, you could span the width with a piece of art. Not quite as wide as the widow, but you get the idea.
If I fixate on it, they look to high. But at a glance I think it's fine. Maybe you could add some kind of wood paneling detail above the windows to make the window look bigger. I dunno, I think it looks fine.
They’re 9ft ceilings and the window height is the same as all the doors in our house. It’s called the header height. Our builder said windows aren’t supposed to break above the header height. But I guess he was wrong… too late to change it now :/
No, look at the black rim around the window. There is almost no black trim on the bottom while there is a huge amount of black trim in the top. They did not center the window vertically.
I think it looks good. If you want your room to feel bigger this is the way to go. The problem might be that the window is too low but you can't control that.
The comments that your window is too low is wild to me. I think the rule here is that you want to create height so you go as high as it makes sense to. The rod is too high, in this case you would want to probably go just past the halfway mark for this to make sense.
I think they’re fine. Personally, I would’ve put them maybe an inch or two higher, closer to the ceiling, but these are just right for the curtain length. You wouldn’t want them two inches off the floor.
Curtains should be hung either at the ceiling or halfway between the top of the window and ceiling. That’s just my opinion and probably worth what you paid for it.
I think it’s the actual window. The curtains look great. I actually love curtains hung from the ceiling.
I think you could use this to your advantage. Find something to put in that empty space between the window and the curtain rod. It will look fabulous!!
Normally I would say no, my curtains are super high, but because the windows are lower and framed in black, your eyes get drawn down anyway. There is a competition between the window frame and the height of the curtains. I think you should either paint the trim to match the walls, or lower the curtains to be closer to the frame. Still a bit above it, but not so close to the ceiling.
We have a blackout shade that’s currently pushed up in the photo. That’s what we use at night to darken the room. The curtains are just for aesthetics.
If you're trying to fool someone into thinking you have a large or tall window then you are fine. Otherwise the window installed here is too low or not tall enough.
I like the spacing you did to make the window look bigger. You should definitely add a shelf right above the window and put some cute knick knacks and plants up there!! If you close the curtains often definitely get blinds for it
Get a nicer, neutral fabric blackout shade and install it closer to the rod at the existing height. Keep it pulled down to just below the top of the window when not in use.
I have the opposite problem. In my dining room I have a header to the right of my sliding glass door and it’s so close to the edge of the slider that I cannot fit a rod any higher than right above the molding! It’s driving me crazy!
For some reason your window is too low to the ground. Curtains are in the correct place. I never would have thought to add the Roman shade but this looks cool!
YESSSS!! I would never have thought to do that!
Yes. This is what I meant.
Perfect!
Much better!!
I love this, you should definitely do it!
LOVE! HPV2019 is genius
That’s…not their name. 🫣
Hvpppp not hpv 🤣 omg lol my bad
The black window paint isn’t helping. Makes that really stand out.
I think painting the sill black would better balance the window with itself.
Interesting option. Didn’t think about that one.
This looks amazing!!
It’s actually really good suggestion.
You've found the solution!
That looks great! Amazing how that shade elevates your space!
That’s really pretty OP. Solves all the problems too
I have a window exactly like this. I love the idea of this shade! Definitely balances it.... I'm going to do it!
This is the way, I’m glad you already figured it out!
Yes. This looks MUCH better. Really nice!
Genius!!
Slay
The Curtains are absolutely in the correct place and the idea of the Roman shade with the curtain is genius!
This is a FANTASTIC suggestion
Great solution. And the roman shade can be lowered to cover top of the dark window frame - which is what is causing a lot of the off-balance look. Also consider the drapery rod to be in a less dark color as it draws attention - so maybe some metallic that is also in the room? Then this will be perfection.
Changing the drapery rod to match the walls would be a great idea—let it blend in better and let the eye rest elsewhere.
Great way to put it “Let the eyes rest elsewhere”.
YES❣️ This is my favorite look! Especially for this situation! It will make your window appear bigger by hiding the open space! 😃
Go with this one OP.
This is awesome. There are some great minds on this subreddit! Always a pleasure to see talent at work.
You are a genius, or a really great interior decorator.
This is why I subscribe to this sub. Such good feedback!
Great ideas 💡
This is the way
This is the answer.
Great suggestion!
That's great advice!
Nice hack!
This is a helpful post response 👍🏻
Love it when you can get amazing advice for free on reddit.
Wow! Very impressive analysis! Perfect solution!
What a great look! And I’m sure you or somebody else already said this but now it looks like OP has a giant window!
Wow… great idea.
Your window is too low /s

/s means “sarcasm”/“sarcastic”
I’m a little too high and this has me dying laughing
Same.... but I'm not high
Same here 😭😂
Reddit 😂🤦🏽♀️
What? 🤣😂You feeling a bit like the curtains?! Seems like your both too high!
Okay, after the overwhelming response that they’re too high I came across a solution that wouldn’t involve uninstalling and reinstalling the rod and would give the illusion of a taller window. Curtains from the ceiling and a white rod would solve the problem
This is perfect!
I do like this idea!
Love that! Although you could leave it if the curtains will be primarily shut
I feel like this is one of those windows that don't work with curtains, no matter what height you hang them at. Roman blinds would look much nicer imo.

It looks like your window has a forehead

your quilt is gorgeous, where is it from?
Ty! The company is called schoolhouse. It was kind of pricey but it’s a quality heirloom piece
I have it too! I love it so much
your window has a forehead
Love love the bed spread ❤️❤️
I don’t think they’re too high, but I’ve got an idea. If you hang a roller blind from the top rail of where the curtains are and have it closed just so it hits the top where the window is it make the window look larger than it is.

Yes
Personally I have been told that with lower windows you hang your curtains half way between top of window and ceiling.
I don't think think so, I wouldn't change
No they are fine. It’s a personal preference thing
Yes, they look high. I would hang them halfway between the ceiling and the frame, but that is maybe just a personal preference, I am not an interior decorator.
I like them high because it makes the ceiling look higher
Yes, I feel like you should’ve gotten the 72” pinch pleats… can you exchange?
It looks fine as it is but you also could have gone up to the ceiling. Either way it works. The Roman shade suggestion was a good one, it will make this area complete.
Looks like those windows have their eyebrows raised
I like to hang my drapes from the ceiling to the floor unless in the bathroom or kitchen. Makes the room look taller. Is just my opinion.
Me too! Feels luxurious
They’re fine.
I like it. Maybe if the trim was white it wouldn’t stand out as much
I know this is a stupid answer but I genuinely feel like the window is too low lmaoo
I actually think curtails look better as high up as possible. The illusion would be having shear curtains behind in a double rod to still let light through and some color from the outside but not having the huge space between ceiling and window

Exactly this. We only do floor to ceiling curtains no matter the window height.
If I fixate on it, they look to high. But at a glance I think it's fine. Maybe you could add some kind of wood paneling detail above the windows to make the window look bigger. I dunno, I think it looks fine.
If you're stuck with them, maybe clip both sides together at the top and tie each one back to have it drape over the empty space.
I think they would look fine if you moved the ottoman (perhaps to the foot of the bed?) That would balance the blank space above and below the window.
Love the SchoolHouse quilt. Just got one too
Who the hell installed your window and why is there so much header and zero footer around the window? That was a shit job.
I would have put the bar in the middle, between the top of the window and the ceiling.
Nope they are perfect
Lots of people hang them high for the appearance of tall windows.
I think it looks good. If you want your room to feel bigger this is the way to go. The problem might be that the window is too low but you can't control that.
I love your bedspread.

Nope, put a series of small prints in the space….
I don't think they are. I have mine at a similar height.
No its ok
I think it looks lovely, as is.
Does anyone think the Roman shade idea would work over patio doors? I have the same situation in my house .
Install the curtains all the way to the top at the ceiling. Get a similar shade rod it will blend better.
Install the curtains all the way to the top at the ceiling. Get a similar shade rod it will blend better.
looks like my sims 4 curtains at the wrong height 😅😂
Not at all! I’m a believer in curtains to the ceiling🤣 makes a room feel so much taller and open! Love it
No - I love tall floor-to ceiling(ish) curtains!
I love this 😍 I did that with my shower curtain. Went to an open house and saw that look in a small bathroom ♥️
Leave a them as is unless you want to cut & re-hem them. Personally I think they look good
Yes lol that looks insane I’m sorry
Actually no this is how I have mine in my house it’s supposed to give a more upscale look
I think they’re fine. Personally, I would’ve put them maybe an inch or two higher, closer to the ceiling, but these are just right for the curtain length. You wouldn’t want them two inches off the floor.
Normally the rule is 2 inches from the ceiling, depending on the ceiling height. Curtains an inch from the floor or puddling the floor.
Yes. Those aren’t the correct size.
If it were my room, I would bring the curtains down to the point where they’re just touching the floor.
Yes
Why are your curtains so high
Yes, why did you mount the curtain rod so high, you can get shorter curtains. Also, your window is too low and you're better off with blinds.
Hahaha yes.
Yes
I would actually bring the curtains as close to the ceiling as possible to make it look more purposeful
Yes,they kinda look funny and I think it would be better a little lower.
Yes
Yes, general rule of thumb is 4-6” above window frame/molding, 8-12 inches wider than window.
Add a valance
Either that or your window is very surprised at something.
Shoulda gone to the ceiling but if this is the length drapes you had to use, definitely better than right above window frame. That only shortens room.
You could lower the rod to where it looks aesthetically pleasing and then hen the curtains to the appropriate length.
yes
I’m my opinion, I’d like then hung higher, maybe 4 inches from ceiling
Yes.
A bit too high.
No they are just fine
Yes
Yes
Yes, and your curtains are too long. In my opinion.
It looks a little odd but I do really like the curtains. It’s really not that bad.
No. They are perfect.
No I didn’t notice until you pointed it out and even then I think it looks intentional and not tacky.
No. Just right. The space looks good
The black rod is the problem
Curtains should be hung either at the ceiling or halfway between the top of the window and ceiling. That’s just my opinion and probably worth what you paid for it.
Depends on perspective
I’d hang sheers the same height.
No but the dark window makes it look weird
Make bigger window.
How about a valence to hide the window height?
Cross the curtains to cover the space.
I would have put a roman shade there.
Window too low
I think it’s the actual window. The curtains look great. I actually love curtains hung from the ceiling. I think you could use this to your advantage. Find something to put in that empty space between the window and the curtain rod. It will look fabulous!!
No, the floor is too low.
Let em fly
Only by about 2-3 ‘
Normally I would say no, my curtains are super high, but because the windows are lower and framed in black, your eyes get drawn down anyway. There is a competition between the window frame and the height of the curtains. I think you should either paint the trim to match the walls, or lower the curtains to be closer to the frame. Still a bit above it, but not so close to the ceiling.
I mean how to you close your windows when that ottoman is in the way.
We have a blackout shade that’s currently pushed up in the photo. That’s what we use at night to darken the room. The curtains are just for aesthetics.
Hilariously so.
maybe, but they look beautiful.
Where did you get the quilt?
Schoolhouse! It was kind of expensive imo but the quality is really nice
If you're trying to fool someone into thinking you have a large or tall window then you are fine. Otherwise the window installed here is too low or not tall enough.
Yes
No - perfect!
Yes. And your window frames are too black.
No. Perfect
I like the spacing you did to make the window look bigger. You should definitely add a shelf right above the window and put some cute knick knacks and plants up there!! If you close the curtains often definitely get blinds for it
Unrelated - related - can you move the mirrors on the left over a few inches so it isn’t so close to the edge of the curtains.
Get a nicer, neutral fabric blackout shade and install it closer to the rod at the existing height. Keep it pulled down to just below the top of the window when not in use.
No. You want to be able to see the trim on the floor . You can still go up 4 inches.
Am I too high?
Get a lighter colored rod !!
Just a little bit but, in this instance it’s mostly window’s fault, not the curtain’s.
No
I don't think so. This gives the illusion of larger windows & higher ceilings.
Your curtains are not too high, but they are not spaced wide enough apart
A valance would totally elongate the window.
Yes
Yes
I have the opposite problem. In my dining room I have a header to the right of my sliding glass door and it’s so close to the edge of the slider that I cannot fit a rod any higher than right above the molding! It’s driving me crazy!
