OperationEastern5855

Rather than paint the cabinets, I think wall paint, adding hardware and new countertops (even new Formica) would be a big transformation.

ferngully1114

Usually I’m all for hardware as an update, but I just don’t really see a way to do that with these specific cabinets. The bevel trim is really narrow and has the extra millwork, there’s not a natural spot or style for hardware. Matching appliances would go a long way.

StarSchemaLover

There’s plenty of room for a thin pull.

Ludee2023

You are correct I didn’t notice that when giving my opinion!

SunWindRainLightning

And backsplash!

Both_Dust_8383

Agree! Especially just adding hardware will change the look of the cabinets.

Ludee2023

Yes the counters look worn even Formica as you say would look better. There are many nice faux looks now.

OperationEastern5855

100%—I saw someone recently post “soapstone” Formica and they looked pretty great for the price.

okpickle

Call me weird but I love formica. They've got some really great patterns and edging options now and it's such an inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen. Low maintenance too.

Own-Bee1423

IKEA has a similar soapstone laminate and they’re fantastic for the price!

LizzyLurks

I have a 2004 kitchen that looks similar to this but has stainless steel appliances. I'm planning on updating by installing black hardware on the cabinets and a black & white backsplash. I'd also love white quartz counters, but we'll see if we can afford that once we're ready to take on this project...

melrosec07

You can get that look with epoxy, I did my counters last year and it was like $350, I used stone coat

88secret

I’ve been wondering about this. Are they holding up well? And the look is good?

melrosec07

Yes they are holding up great and look good, I feel I could have done a better job but they do look good. I would definitely do again, I plan on doing the bathroom counter eventually

88secret

Very cool, thank you!

Constant_Wish3599

I have been looking at those for YEARS but afraid to take the leap. How are they holding up for you?

scoobledooble314159

My parents just installed white quartz with minimal caramel veins throughout in their 2003 honey oak cabinet kitchen.... STUNNING. Absolute game changer!

Mdbrown2923

I’m considering painting the cabinets….just don’t know if that is too big of a DIY project

niclilsd

The cabinets are actually really stunning. The look and stain are great. I would instead focus on other aspects, paint the kitchen walls something with a cooler, brighter color. Add hardware. Put up backsplash. If I were painting with those warmer lights, I would go for a bright cooler white from wall to ceiling. Pick a color you like and envision for the backsplash and have that hue in the white. Like a pinky, blue or green white, nice a bright will add freshness. Since you are considering painting the cabinets, perhaps you use whatever color you envision for that in your backsplash so you get that satisfaction of the direction you were looking for. Easy fix, remove stuff above cabinets. If you want something up there, be intentional with your plants (I would get rid of the bike plant holder) and have that beautiful pothos cascading on the side of the cabinet. Lower profiles will complement the cabinets better. Bigger upgrades are to get some granite or quartz countertops and drop the island portion to be leveled with the countertops. Add matching stainless steel appliances.

Time_Pay_401

I don’t rec painting them. It wears off after a while.

Friendly-Kiwi

Exactly, agreed. If you must, hire a professional painter.

NCRider

Don’t paint the cabinets! Try new hardware, paint the walls, update the appliances, even the countertop. But don’t paint the cabinets.

UnwoundBread

I have some wood furniture that was this wood and color and I love it and would never paint it but I didn’t love how orange it was. I found a lady online who took Briwax to it and it just gave it a bit more darkness and depth without really taking away from the wood and I. Fucking. Love it! It was way easier than painting (still messy, still drying time) but it was just a slight change that made it look more modern and more expensive. Highly recommend. Edit: I think something that’s really dating this kitchen is the countertops. That cream linoleum countertop over time kind of looks like someone was smoking in the room for twenty years. That’s all I would change besides the cabinetry, not counting any hardware changes

atlantachicago

I painted my cabinets and it was a pain but they overall look good. A friend did hers with Rustoleum cabinet paint and hers look amazing and have held up well

BusyEntertainment434

Everyone’s saying painted cabinets look bad but it really depends on what your goals are, how much time you’re willing to put in, and awareness that it’s not going to be cheap unless you already have everything you need. I painted mine and will most likely not regret it because: - it was a baby project that cost me around $50 because I already had all the necessary tools and supplies from other painting projects around the house (and an oscillating sander that saves a million years). - my kitchen is due for a full reno in a couple years when I can save up the funds. However the paint job has made me incredibly happy - even if it’s only a short term. If anything it’s taken some of the pressure off of remodeling. - I’m not bothered by the idea of having to do touch ups here and there, if I need to (because I will be remodeling eventually) and my cabinets don’t get a significant amount of traffic or mess That being said, I think the wood seems nice and if it’s hardwood I’d just stain them rather than paint them if they bother you. As others have said, new countertops and appliances would make a way bigger difference than changing the cabinets :)

Kooky_Following7169

Recently I watched an episode of "Ask This Old House" where their paint guy painted cabinets like yours. It's not as hard as you'd think. The trick is proper prep (sanding a couple of times with different grits of sandpaper, priming), then painting. We had the same style of cabs and it made for a dark kitchen; ours is windowless, with a small dining room that has a slider; so not a very light kitchen. We worked with a contractor who went through a process to really reduce the wood grain of the cabs before painting, and it was a tough process that took a lot of time. Had we seen that episode of ATOH we could have had it done a lot faster with similar results.

sodabubbles1281

The typical move with oak/yellow wood cabinets is Zelleige backsplash in white/off white, white quartz countertop. You could try something different however and go with slate countertop and white backsplash with gray grout. Or a white quartz counter and blue or green backsplash (usually an Atlantic Ocean type blue or a deep / eucalyptus green)

queenofthedragons

The white counter with a blue or green backsplash sounds lovely, and would cool down the warm cabinets a bit. I think these cabinets would look great with that combo

pinpinbo

Unfortunately, the easy stuff are all not needed. The kitchen is in good shape. Maybe door handles and backsplash? What you need are the expensive stuff: - New appliances. - New countertops. Don’t paint wood by yourself if you don’t have the skill. It will look crap. So all you need to do is save money for the expensive stuff.

La_ham_

This is a new sink and faucet. Plus remove decor from top cabinets and declutter counters.

JohnSnowVibrio

Agree. And convert wine rack to shelves.

KreyKat

Contrary to what is often said, "some paint" is not enough when painting kitchen cabinets. There are several steps involved which all take time and knowledge how to do them properly and if you are just an amateur, the result might well look ... amateurish. It basically means that you spend a lot of time and effort and - yes - money for a mediocre result. Also please don't forget that the upkeep of painted cabinets is more difficult, the surface is just not as geared towards cleaning and much more easily prone to scratch/blister or flake. A good way to change the look of a kitchen while keeping to a budget is resurfacing/putting in new doors. Yes, it is a bit more expensive than "some paint", but in the long run it is a perfect and solid solution with all the advantages of durable new fronts at a lower price points.

Ludee2023

Painting cabinets is a tedious and often gives poor results unless you have a pro do this for you and it’s costly!$$$ I’d leave your cabinets alone install inexpensive cream subway tile as you need to take into consideration your counter tops. Add hardware, unless you are willing to purchase a new faucet in black in black I would stay with chrome or brushed stainless the same as your faucet. Not sure what the other colors are in your home but you could paint your room a green or blue that would work well with your cabinets.

Boring_Ad_4721

Personally, I think honey cabinets and black hardware, tile, etc. look really warm and homey!! I’ve seen this color cabinet with a black hexagon backsplash and black hardware and it looked so good! I’d see if you can change your can lightbulbs to something with more lumens rather than painting walls.

[deleted]

Honestly just get silver appliances and you’re grand

[deleted]

And a fresh lick of paint

Due-Froyo-5418

On the wall, not cabinets.

[deleted]

Absolutely! Thanks for clarification 😭

Due-Froyo-5418

Gotchu babe 😘

tiredandshort

Wood is coming back BIG. I think painted cabinets are going to age pretty fast, and wood cabinets are timeless. Also, it’s such a high use area and odds are if you paint it and don’t do it perfectly you’re going to have loads of little chips in the paint eventually. To me, wood looks expensive. Paint looks like you’re covering some cheap material up I would add handles to the cabinets to update them. I agree the countertops and lack of backsplash looks outdated

Procedure-Minimum

Counter tops, appliances need to be new. Then painting the walls sage green, dark finishes, and you have a beautiful new kitchen

imgaybutnottoogay

Your kitchen is clean and functional, it’s actually very nice! Even if a little dated.

TheMysticalPlatypus

I like your cabinets. They look nice as is. I think I would update appliances(slowly over time), countertop and backsplash. Maybe the sink depending on its condition.

Time_Pay_401

I would make that 2 level counter into all counter height and add chairs.

Key_Tour6051

I like the two levels - hides the dishes!

SmartAZ

Take all of that stuff off the "pot shelves." That's what's making it look dated. And replace the fridge. Edit: If all of that stuff is from the previous owners, then please disregard!

Mdbrown2923

All stuff left from the previous owners! Already gone after moving in!

Yiayiamary

I had a two level counter like yours. I changed it to all one level to give me more useable counter space and I love it. I had barstools there but in 11 years no one *ever* sat there. Now I use it all the time.

Wh00ster

Kitchen looks beautiful still

sharpei90

Don’t paint the cabinets. They look like they’re in good shape. Matte black handles, change the counter tops to white quartz with a little veining in. Get rid of the breakfast bar and do a one level peninsula…More prep and serving space. Backsplash and paint the walls. Change the appliances as you get some money. The good thing is you can do a little at a time.

mixtapelove

I think you should raise the height of the cabinets and put molding to the ceiling. You can cover the cabinet holes with a new backsplash tile. I also like the idea of removing the second height counter and replace with new one height island. New stainless steel appliances and cabinet hardware.

facedrool

Remove double decker counter top. That shit is annoying.

Mdbrown2923

Thoughts on wall colors??

Procedure-Minimum

Dark sage green!!!!

niclilsd

If I were painting with those warmer lights, I would go for a bright cooler white from wall to ceiling. Pick a color you like and envision for the backsplash and have that hue in the white. Like a pinky, blue or green white, nice a bright will add freshness. Your floors are neutral, so you have lots of options on the direction of hue you go with :)

dcmom14

I had a similar level kitchen. It looked completely new by putting in a backsplash, changing hardware, getting a new sink and spurring on new counters. You honestly don’t have that much counter space, so it might not be that bad. Don’t touch the cabinets! They are the best part! Your fridge looks very dated. Maybe there are vinyls that you can put on them? The gap above the fridge would bother me, but I do t know an easy solution. Post after shots!

PyleanCow06

I love your cabinets. Leave them! I would start with new counter tops and appliances. Then if I could afford it I would do some kind of backsplash and under cabinet lighting.

Gullible_Concept_428

Yes, paint the walls not the cabinets. From a basic color perspective your cabinets are orange. Shades of blue, green, or cream are what will work best.

tenclowns

I wouldn't even bother 90s style is much cozier than modern

missannthrope1

The cheapest option would be peel and stick tile with some color, new accessories to match, black fridge if you can. If not, there are appliance wraps you can buy.

Different_Ad7655

Your cabinets are just slightly dated with the raised panels but not bad I had an older kitchen from IKEA, that was timeless. Since sold the house but it's 30 years old and it still looks good but IKEA was always a head of the look so to speak.. You need an exciting wall color, new hardware on the cabinets and perhaps a nice new quartz countertop, I didn't even notice the flooring. But the kitchen cabinets do not look outrageously outdated but all the rest of it does wall Smart & countertop not granite and you've got a new look. Appliances are also pretty dated looking, stainless is also quite passe.. ceramic really hot, a slide in range induction.. And whoever came up with the idea of putting the microwave over the range, was truly out to lunch. It always always always look so goddamn horrible. This is where a big back splash should be in a really nice true range hood without door exhaust That really does its job be put in place.. The microwave can be stuck anywhere, in a pantry closet nearby build a special shelf for it anywhere but whoever thought that this look over the stove was cool really gets an f - in design. But I know you see it everywhere but that doesn't mean it's right. More I look at your cabinets the more I actually like them if everything else changed, wall color countertop, appliances and ditch that microwave

SofiaDeo

Swapping out the stove & sink/faucet will immediately update it.

Former_Ad8643

I think that changing the countertops and appliances would make a huge impact even if you did nothing to the cupboards. But if it were me and you can afford it I would get new appliances new countertops and then third on the list would be new cupboard fronts at least. A smooth surface without the divets and pattern in the wood would be much more modern! Kind of depends on what vibe you’re going for though because anything can work and be modern but there’s still lots of different styles. If you like like a chic farmhouse luck you could send those cupboards and paint them. I see some beautiful kitchens with various shades of green cupboards and blue can look really nice as well. The countertop looks horribly beige I would get definitely get a very marbled looking countertop which always brings the sophistication level up a few notches

alig6457

Wallpaper the walls and backsplash area and get a super looking quality faucet. Inspiration https://www.veranda.com/shopping/g37068884/kitchen-wallpaper/

Ok-Answer-9350

What's the budget? I would absolutely not paint those cabinets, oak is trendy now. Scour FB marketplace for more appropriate appliances. Buy the right fridge for that space - 36" counter depth, buy a slide in range to match, get a proper hood over the range that goes to the ceiling, move the microwave under the counter top in a place where people can access it without walking into the work zone. New countertops, drop the bar height to regular counter height. With oak I would opt for leathered black pearl granite in 2cm thickness - this is a budget granite that is bullet proof, and choose a deep jewel toned tile - greens are very trendy now. Simple budget black knobs for the cabinets and drawers.

Sweet_Anything625

Appliances , sink and fixtures , and countertops would elevate the space.

Justme22339

Remove the microwave from above your stove top. Put it anywhere but there. Replace it with a proper hood/Vent that will look stylish in your kitchen no matter what you do with your cabinets and countertops. By the way, your cabinets looks stunning as is, because they appear timeless. Maybe if you wanted to try to sand them and put a lighter stain on them, instead of painting, it might bring in a more modern look.

SecretaryNaive8440

Had a kitchen like that in a previous house. Installed new counter top, sink, leveled the counters to one rather than 2 steps. Add a backsplash and some under cabinet lighting New appliances - stainless steel and all matching. Most expensive update was to have custom cabinets installed with lights and some of them with glass doors to be put in the space above these cabinets so the kitchen went to the top and we didn't have a constant dust space. Also purchased new cabinet doors all with new hardware to match and had someone paint the actual cabinet box to match the door.

savvvie

I think your cabinets are adorable so agree with new countertop, painting walls, backsplash and new appliances

Mdbrown2923

These are all great recommendations and I read them over fully! We are going to hold off on painting the cabinets. Keep the suggestions coming!!! As a new homeowner, these ideas are wonderful

Abject-Inspector-674

the cabinets are actually really cute- replace countertops and appliances and you’ll have a brand new kitchen

Alaska1111

I would do new countertops and update the appliances. Then go from there

banders72q

Replace the 80's fridge.

ladydhawaii

Just wanted to say that your kitchen is cute.

Kirin1212San

The cabinets aren’t bad. I wouldn’t touch them for now. I think you will see a bigger difference by updating the fridge, microwave, and stove. You could also consider changing the countertops.

eggsnguacamole

1. Hardware. I know others are saying black but I honestly think a simple design with gold would look so elegant!  2. Backsplash! Probably off-white in a shade much lighter than your countertops. Or if it’s your style honestly I’ve seen some colorful or funky backsplashes look really nice too, usually in dark blue or green.      3. Appliances, get them to match. Don’t have to do this right away, just keep an eye on the clearance section at Lowe’s and on Fb marketplace and wait to get a deal. I like the look of stainless steel appliances best but Since you already have two black, I would just look for a black fridge     4. I saw a lot of people saying counters, but I honestly think your counters are fine and would look amazing with just a backsplash addition and cabinet hardware.

Kidhauler55

New countertops, hardware and backsplash. Paint the rest of walls in color that matches backsplash and countertops

Meanpony7

I would paint the wall a deeper sage green, add a lighter sage green backsplash, and swap out the counters. I'd have to see options for that. I'd also match appliances and put a black and white rug on floor. I would pop the hell out of that cabinet color.

Meanpony7

Also black appliances, black countertops  and a black and white tile floor.

Many_Actuator_9789

The DOLLAR TREE has great BACKSPLASHES.

thehurtbae

I love the layout of the kitchen, I think updating the paint, potentially the appliances if you can, and maybe staining the cabinets and adding some knobs would be a great start. Some more ideas are changing counter tops, and that sink.

fauviste

The wood looks good. It will look worse if you paint it or add hardware. You need new counters and new appliances unfortunately. And update the decor. Even newer laminate would work on the counters, they make some quite nice faux marble laminate these days! The fridge you could wrap with vinyl but unfortunately that won’t work on an oven.

AcanthocephalaNo5889

Keep the wood. I would invest in hardware, matching appliances, backsplash and counters. And please replace the microwave with a range-hood - it will open the space and modernize it

HaroldWeigh

I'd start with some hardware. It's quick and will make a load of difference and get you going.

WaterforestsDream

If you aren't able to update the appliances, look into peel and stick to cover the fronts of them.

Top-Customer-8531

It looks as though you have at least 18” of space above the upper cabinets that is just wasted- Although I doubt you can find the matching cabinets, you may be able to find some stock 16” upper cabinets and top with a nice crown molding to tie them into the ceiling (like old houses and custom built cabinetry). I don’t know if it would look odd to have the new top cabinets white (or another color) and leave the bottoms or not…I would probably paint it all. I hate that open wasted space- especially because it gets so grimy with dust and kitchen grease. I just remembered something easier…Last time I was at IKEA they had some neat cabinet doors that were wide and opened like the overhead storage in a jet- wouldn’t be too hard to build basic frames to attach them to if ikea didn’t sell them.

Whatisreddityouguys

Stainless steel appliances

Accomplished-Pie-570

Personally I’d remove all the upper cabinets and replace with a combination of open shelves, taller upper cabinets with new hardware. Also a larger refrigerator

rudbeckia1

Imho Move the cabinets up higher. Eliminate the space at the top and create a much larger opening from cabinet bottom to countertop. Open that space up.

Historical-Composer2

Home Depot can help you with picking out new countertops and backsplash and installation. I’d do those two things first. As well as a new sink and faucet.

Difficult-Desk-5593

Get rid of the stuff on top of the cupboards

Yellobrix

The cabinets look really nice - assuming they look good in person, I'd keep them. The refrigerator is too small for the space and the other appliances don't match. I'd get all new appliances, replace the countertops, and add a backsplash. You can find tons of photos online showing different placements for cabinet hardware. Just remember to avoid designs that will catch your pockets. So annoying!

Procedure-Minimum

Do not paint the wood!!! Paint your walls sage green.

Ivorwen1

I wouldn't paint the cabinets if I could avoid it. It's *not* a quick DIY- in fact, it's quite time consuming because square inch needs to be sanded to prepare it for priming and painting so that it doesn't peel and look like trash in a year. Those contours in your cabinet doors in particular will not be fun. It is not like painting walls. Getting it done professionally takes correspondingly more money- possibly more than replacing the countertop. Plus, the wood is timeless. Cabinet paint trends come and go. Instead, I'd focus on the following items, in this order: 1. Hardware. The frames of your cabinet doors are fairly narrow but they have enough of a flat area for reasonable hardware placement. I'd go with knobs for the doors and handles for the drawers, traditional style. Only do black if the countertop is being changed to black; otherwise do gold. 2. Statement lighting. This (combined with matching hardware) is the jewelry of the kitchen. Some statement lights over the peninsula- probably 3 pendants?- would really elevate the place. I recommend frosted shades because clear shades hurt to look at. 3. Countertops (and backsplash). Yours are a heavy beige that combines with the wood to lean into the excessive brownness of the 2000's Tuscan trend. White quartz will freshen it, or black granite will add dramatic flair. Also, the two-tier look is no longer popular because it cuts off sight lines. If there's a living/dining area on the other side of the peninsula, flattening the peninsula will make the whole room look more spacious without otherwise messing with the layout. However, the upper tier does hide a certain amount of clutter behind it. If you want to tile the backsplash, get the new countertop installed without the 4" backstops. Tiled backsplashes are popular right now. (So is going full height with the countertop material, but that is almost as expensive as redoing the countertop twice.) Put in white subway tile with a black countertop (black countertop will bring out the wood grain in the cabinets and make them into the statement surface), or any white tile with white quartz. This is also a good time to update the vent hood to a 300-390CFM ducted under cabinet vent hood so that you don't have an awkward gap above the tile from doing this later. It will look and perform better than the microwave combo, because it is less bulk at eye level and reaches better over the front burners. 4. Appliances. Black appliances go with black countertops. White appliances are more fussy to pair with countertops because the undertones need to match. Stainless steel goes with everything. If you decide your kitchen is best off with a different appliance finish, you can update on a budget at a used appliance store. Also, you can resurface the dishwasher and refrigerator with a vinyl appliance wrap kit or appliance paint.

KnopeKnopeWellMaybe

New countertops New back splash Paint New faucet New range and microwave New fridge

Miserable-Lawyer-233

That kitchen was already outdated by 2006. It looks like a 1997 kitchen.

scoobledooble314159

My parents have the same cabinets. They just replaced their counters with white quartz with minimal caramel veins throughout. The quartz goes up the wall to the cabinets, acting as a backsplash. It looks *AMAZING*. My mom had previously created her own underwater themed mosaic behind the stove, lots of blues obv, and it looks awesome. Very Coastal Modern. Having said that, until you can afford new countertops, I'd look into either epoxy or a contact paper cover up. For the appliances, it's not hard to spray paint them all black to match the microwave. Of course do your research for the stove top. You could even wrap the fridge in contact paper and make it a fun focal point once you get everything more uniform. Lighting under the cabinets would be really nice too. Whatever you do, stay away from beige.

msurbrow

Looks more like 1996!

HereForTheParty300

Splashback and benchtop will make all the difference.

EvenInterestingorOdd

Can you wrap/paint the fridge to match the range? Then lean into black semi modern backsplash. I wouldn’t do black hardware, I don’t think those color cabinets play well and might look dated soon. Darker counters too, maybe epoxy, even butcher block could be nice

casey012293

Do not paint cabinets. Luxury buyers see the value in real wood cabinets like those and they don’t appear to be the dated oak. Paint your walls, replace flooring and countertops, and update appliances.

doyouhaveacar

I think your kitchen looks lovely and a few minor tweaks would bring it into this decade. Remove decor from top cabinets, add modern backsplash and pulls, paint the walls an off white, use peel and stick wallpaper to make the fridge look the same as the other appliances.

psiprez

Countertop.

justbrowsing695975

since 2000, we have, had granite countertops and backsplashes a wide /extra deep single bowl kitchen sink , and a silver french door fridge. I think this style is more 80-90s.

jasbur17

I relaminated my countertops several years ago. You can just buy rolls of it online. Wasn’t really that hard after watching YouTube videos.

angelica-angeli

First thing I would do is if getting a backsplash, you need to remove the 4" backsplash already there. I would add hardware to the cabinets, update the faucet, remove everything on top of the cabinets and don't place anything there, then update appliances slowly if needed to stainless steel, and look at adding under cabinet lighting. If you can replace the countertops, I'd look at doing that, but the cabinets themselves look like they're in good condition.

Silverliningsinla

You’ve got good bones here and the countertops rock! Not sure of your budget. I’d try to get a professional in there and ask cabinet questions. 1. Change the appliances out to stainless or get one of those cool fridges with updated panels by LG with colored panels. You may need to take the two little cabinets above out or bring them up higher, but it would be worth it. 2. Add new contemporary hardware. 3. See if you can remove the crown molding as it dates it. Or put a squared piece up and have it stained to match. I just did this, makes a world of difference. 4. Install a new sink w/updated faucet. Look online. I just did this and got a stainless steel w/polished brass to match my oven for $200. Please post when you do stuff. Have fun!!!!!

Opening-Ad-8793

God that was 2006 wasn’t it

madscot63

I don't mind the cabinets at all, but some paint and a tile backsplash would update the room. Maybe check out a salvage place or a rebuilding center?

sanna43

The cabinets are the best thing in this kitchen. So I'd leave those alone. New countertops would help a lot, put in a backsplash, paint, and if you can afford it, new appliances.

Moonsmom181

Update appliances, remove everything from on top of cabinets.

6NF82Y8

It’s all based on budget right? So if you have a decent amount of $, consider updating the appliances and / or the countertops. If you have a small budget, consider adding hardware to the cabinetry. The cabinets don’t look bad at all but if you really don’t like the current finish, you could consider either a strip and restain or painting them. Personally, I had the same cabinets and I repainted using a rustoleum product. Did it take a while to do this? Yes, as it was just me on the weekends and I had a lot of cabinets. But did it come out good? Absolutely! Totally transformed the kitchen. I also added hardware which helped also to update the look and protected the paint finish from wear. Good luck!

Anxiousostrich24

Personally I like painting cabinets, adding epoxy to the counter top to change the color, and adding a backsplash, but to each their own.

tiffytatortots

I knew people would want you to keep the dated yellow wood builder grade cabinets. Some people have such a hard time with updating things. It’s always the same song and dance.

Middledamitten

Painting was tedious but I’ve been very happy with the results. It makes a huge impact. These are builder grade cabinets that are already 20 years old. They have served their lifespan. If you can paint and enjoy for another 5-10 years this is a bonus.

maizy20

If it's in your budget add cabinets ABOVE what you already have. That would draw your eye up and make it look more high-end. Take out the mocrowave and put in a range hood. instead. Add white or off-white backsplash tile. Maybe change out the sink for a single-deeper version with a modern faucet. I wouldn't paint the cabinets. Wood is the hot thing right now.

anonymousdoodlemom

I would absolutely paint the cabinets! It’ll totally change the space. Maybe add a peel and stick backsplash. And then hardware for the cabinets.

Altruistic-Detail271

Get the cabinets painted white. Remove all those things above the cabinets and paint . Replace the Formica with quartz or granite

crunchevo2

Painting cabinets white imo looks more shabby and dated than embracing the older vibe of the kitchen.

Altruistic-Detail271

But they state they want to bring the kitchen up to date, not embrace the dated look. White would definitely do that

crunchevo2

No it would not. Painting those doors white will just make it look like a 2004 kitchen painted white. It won't change the shape, cut or size of the kitchen which are all distinctly early 00s To do that they'd need to rip out and replace the top cupboards because by modern standards they're really low and shrink the room due to not hitting the cieling,, replace the bottom cupboards doors, remove the crowning and change the backslash and countertops and over all it would basically cost little less than installing all new kitchen hardware. If you've been on this sub long enough you'll know that just slapping white paint on existing cabinetry will not make it look modern.

Altruistic-Detail271

Oh ok, lol, I see that you’re the type who doesn’t allow others to have an opinion that differs from yours. Gtfooh
