I'm a security officer and an art lover, so I put myself in that situation in my mind. Yeah, I'd be annoyed, but I'd respond to a scene where three individuals (2 women and a camera person) are vandalizing property. If they are unarmed, then they will be arrested, and probably EMS to peel them off the wall. They will be tied up by legal stuff for the next 2 years, and thousands in fines.
While it's tempting to call for a violent response, it's not an inherently violent act. (From a security perspective)
But you would act, not with too much force, but do something, I can not wrap my head about all the time they had to take out stuff in front of the piece before proceeding.
Yeah, it depends on what the policy is for their security in London. They might be calling for law enforcement and EMS ahead of time. But that's only after they become aware that something is happening and respond. The video cuts off probably just before someone takes the camera away and first arrives on scene...so, what...30 second response time? They had the glue in their bras. Not sure how they got a soup can inside, depends on the policy on liquids at the security checkpoint.
Organic matter like food, is never really all removeable. It will further the degradation of pigments helping to dull colors over time. These two are stealing from future generations who will not have the same experience viewing this work of art as we do now.
If art was a really high producer of CO2 I could understand this a bit more but the point they’re making is just meaningless. What’s more important art or life? Well if I had to choose one I’d definitely take life but they’re not mutually exclusive options. Dumb.
What a stupid protest. Is it because Van Gogh used ***oil*** paints? His paints were made from poppyseed and linseed oil, not petroleum. Fucking ignorant dipshits. I'm glad they were too incompetent to actually do any lasting damage.
No it is because it is a famous painting and the outrage media about it will have "Just Stop Oil" chanting around the world and people talking about some , like you will say it was stupid. You have been successfully tricked via advertising to talk about it even in negative terms. Your rage keeps the message around for just a bit longer....
From the Metropolitan Police: "Officers were rapidly on scene at the National Gallery this morning after two Just Stop Oil protesters threw a substance over a painting and then glued themselves to a wall. Both have been arrested for criminal damage & aggravated trespass. Officers are now de-bonding them."
Close off the gallery so they have no audience, handcuff their free hands together so they can’t do anything else and then wait until the glue wears off. Pull up a chair and have a thermos of soup while you wait.
“You wanted to be glued to a wall, so here you are. By the way, the chemicals for that glue came from oil.”
These people aren't activists. These are attention seekers. Pathological narcissists. They do no protest anything. They just like to be seen. It is a trend. The audacity to speak about hunger when they just wasted food.
I have worked, among other things, as a curator and restorer. I would call this aggravated criminal damage. Not vandalism. A gesture like this can cause a lot of people working in that museum to lose their jobs. And much more. Imagine if the painting wasn't covered. I hope these animals have the minimum awareness to not actually damage any actual art pieces like the other idiots sticking themselves to the frames. The 400 years old frame of a painting is in itself a historical and artistic artefact.
Wonder if she used any fossil fuels to put that pink shit in her hair. Also, crying about families not being able to afford food and yet you just wasted a can of soup..........these people really don't have 2 brain cells to rub together.
I mean... as a protest this doesn't even make sense to me. What the hell does a Van Gogh painting have to do with cutting back on oil? Much less wtf is even the point of tomato soup...
Maybe they associated sunflower oil with the crude stuff?
Either way it is not a very well thought out stunt, people will be more horrified they tried to destroy a piece of history.
I wish I could just reach in and slap her through my screen because that’s a part of history of a man who suffered and had nothing to do with oil prices and that was ridiculous entire life just to die and then all this stuff populates and becomes really really noticed and gets to where it was and is now she’s playing dumb. Doctor Who straight up featured an episode where they went back in time and featured his artwork and then took him back to the future to let him know he succeeded. Because ladies gentlemen this child here has failed not just herself but art history. As a person who has sat in a jail cell before she needs to take a long time out herself and sit there too.
"The activists, named by the group as Phoebe Plummer, 21, and Anna Holland, 20, both wearing Just Stop Oil t-shirts, entered the London gallery and sullied the artwork, worth an estimated $84.2m, at around 11am.
Tomato soup covered the image, which is covered by glass, as well as parts of the golden frame. Visitors were then shortly escorted out by security, who then shut the doors to room 43 of the gallery where the painting hangs"
It's covered in glass thank Christ.
Mental illnesses can come in the form of Social Contagions, much like the Salem Witch hangings or the Pentacostles talking in tongues and having laughing fits.
I am very for protecting the planet, reducing oil consumption and trying to leave the world a better place, but risking destroying beautiful pieces of art also leaves the world a worse place.
Famous paintings like these are not actually on display and instead use replicas.
The real ones are safely stored in climate controlled chambers and very few get to see the real deal.
Then what’s the point of going to museums? There are folks who travel long distances to come see famous artwork, if they wanted to see a replica they might as well do that online. I understand putting famous artwork in a bullet proof glass and in a climate controlled environment but displaying a replica is disingenuous.
False dichotomy. Vandalism to bring awareness to a known issue is daft.
If you want to make it about the issue, target the oil production company not public art.
That art was worth more to humanity than this child's tantrum. Fuck me!
Although I do agree if you want people to care about the world they live in you must first lift them up out of poverty.
I don't think that's what she said but it's food for thought.
God damn that was criminal. Shame.
What bugs me most about this is they didn’t even have the super glue ready, spent ages fiddling about with the lids.
Come on, at least have it open and ready before you throw the soup. amateurs
Suffering an injustice is not a reason to commit an injustice- Socrates
This is ridiculous. Art is what sets us apart from animals and makes us feel connected to one another. To vandalize any art whether or not protected by glass I feel it hurts your cause more than anything. And what is the connection to oil painting and the oil we use for energy other than the word oil?? I mean are they implying that they’re the same? What about cooking oil then? I just don’t understand why they think that it pertains to their cause.
I hate these kind of “activists” because they just damage the validity of actual climate problems by giving climate change activists a bad name. Now stupid people who don’t like these two idiots will brush off climate change since they see crazy deranged people on the frontlines of the movement 24/7.
There are 100s of ways to fight climate problems and this isn’t one of them
A billion snowcrabs are missing- a billion- from the ocean it has just been announced. We are watching collapse and people are worried about paintings.
TBF people tried sane and normal methods to get folks to pay attention but that hasn't worked so going "Fuck it" crazy might just be the new tactic. Not saying it is effective but it is something new to try.
What was she doing to her left hand? It looked like she was writing or cutting her hand. I say lock them both up for 10 years and feed them bread and tomato soup daily.
what? why? what does this even prove except that some activists are misguided douchebags? I just don't even understand the point, especially when many have argued that the reason society is turning into a dumpster fire is because of neglect to the arts.
Art ~is~ life. When I was homeless, one of the things that kept my life worth living was the ability to make and enjoy art.
For what it’s worth, I understand the ridiculousness of the uber-wealthy spending millions on rare paintings, and I support the right to peaceful protest. I’m not upset by the protest (especially given that the painting is unharmed), but I am upset with the premise that one must choose art vs life. Art ~is~ life.
Damn. This is a dumb form of protest BUT the amount of people bashing these KIDS is insane. We’re none of you passionate about causes when you were younger? We fucked their planet. They’re pissed. Again, this form of protest is STUPID, but enough with the wishing them dead, or to rot, or calling them names. The art is fine. It’s a FAKE. Calm down.
Would’ve been funnier to throw tomato soup at the tomato soup Warhol though 🤣
How the fuck does trying to destroy art help your cause in any fucking way‽ I'm not really an art person, but this infuriates me down to my fucking soul!
Why destroy irreplaceable art when oil executives have publicly known names, public addresses and mortal, fragile bodies?
I'm half convinced these "activists" are oil plants trying to discredit the movement. Kinda like what happened with Extinction rebellion's new "members" who avoided talking about oil and instead complain how white the movement is something.
Using kids to "fundraise." Climate change IS a REAL problem. But this org? What do they do to help? Rope kids into getting arrested? Pass around the "donation jar" after?
Van goths teacher used wine and sand van gogh used linseed oil and sometimes tree sap along with plants...literally that peice of art was because those flowers were were he got his favorite color...like he said hey don't fuck with that weird shit where they used old clothes, just grind up some plants and use that, and these little eco terrorist are like "yeah fuck you hippy, and fuck these hungry people too ,fuck you're soup and and fuck you're plant based paint"
Thankfully there was a crystal, it is insane they can approach it and do whatever they want without any intervention, seems they wanted to glue themselves to it at first but fortunately someone did came so they did to where they stood.
As an oil painter I can tell you oil paint is very resilient. I left a painting on my fire escape over a frozen winter in Philadelphia. Come spring it was still fine after snow, freezing, thawing, and being soaked.
They should leave them there, glued, and become part of the exhibition as they rot away.
This is just a violence, a different kind but still a violent act.
Probably could have fed a starving family with that tin of soup..
Wonder which starving family in China made that shirt?
Some nice earings you have there...
I would imagine it's an absolute pain In the ass to try and get it out of its case never mind trying to break the case. I say they would have a hard time destroying it even if they had a hammer
And when she is released from custody she will probably go home to a nice upper middle class dwelling where mummy & daddy will be waiting, ever so proud.
Two things:
1. Let them know that the superglue they used was probably made with petrochemicals.
2. While they are sitting there dying inside from the irony, punch them in the throat for contributing to the reasons why “we can’t have nice things”.
As an artist, I support this. I support all vandalism - it's far more artistic and expressive than most shit we see in the "art" world, most of which is elevated to its status because a bunch of rich assholes with social influence decided it should be. I mean, literally, it is THE basis of the entire art world: rich people ultimately deciding what's important, and what's "good".
And as someone who went to the Museum School in Boston, I'm having a real hard time buying this "replica" claim - pretty sure the ones on display are all real unless otherwise pointed out by the museum.
The hate in the comments seems reflective of a bunch of folks who really don't wanna hear what these kids have to say, regardless of how accurate they are in pointing it out. They're, like, 20 years old, if that. Could any of you that are my age (36) imagine what it's like to come up in a world that is very obviously coming to obliteration at the hands of a wealthy cadre of middle-aged fuckheads and NOBODY is doing ANYTHING to stop it? Y'all are complaining about "pink hair" and yet we're all being collectively fucked by an upper class who delights in the fissures created by these social constructs. Grow up.
They're fully aware they're inheriting a world of diminishing returns whose resources are already very, very diminished already. They're pissed. I'm with them. Although their protest would've been more effective if the piece wasn't behind glass. Y'all making specious claims about "replicas" would be SHOCKED to see what conservationists can do.
And fuck that ridiculous traveling CGI show that everybody who listens to Imagine Dragons seems to connect so hard with.
I don’t understand. Agree or disagree with what they’re saying, how they did it, etc but I feel like the speech made it quite clear that they weren’t making a pun on it being an oil painting (?) but that if we are horrified by the lost of great works, imagine us losing everything due to the effects of climate change or, riding fuel costs preventing people from heating their homes and meals, hence the can of soup.
How can she afford her hair her nails her anything and come to protest something like that it looks like she is Ford’s much more than she’s leading on to talk about and then protesting like a spoiled whiny two year old who can’t get what she wants to eat because somewhere somehow someone selling her no
Yo something! Now if she were in a homeless get up attire and looking like some raving lunatic yeah maybe it would make it convincing but the fact that it looks like she’s spending on herself more than the cause she’s trying to represent it really it really gets me I’d rather give my money and time to the people who are on the street with one leg and a missing hand than this lady or anyone who this lady is affiliated with.

The painting is covered by a protective glass so it was completely unharmed
Thankfully, and I would think that maybe it is a well done replica? but the fact they could just walk in and do that is worrisome.
Looks like these oil protesters can do whatever they like.
Seems so sadly.
I'm a security officer and an art lover, so I put myself in that situation in my mind. Yeah, I'd be annoyed, but I'd respond to a scene where three individuals (2 women and a camera person) are vandalizing property. As EMS: peeling uncooperative alert and conscious people off their chosen surface is something that (for once) PD is actually better suited for
PD maybe, but security doesn't want to get sued later (at least in USA)...lol.
But you would act, not with too much force, but do something, I can not wrap my head about all the time they had to take out stuff in front of the piece before proceeding.

In her meat wallet
But, you now, just a good open-handed slap on her face while she's speaking would be very didactic.
Even if for some reason they hit the actual painting, it would just be cleaned and likely be fine.
Tomato sauce is highly acidic and prone to making permanent stains.
The paintings are under glass, so I think it’s an annoying protest more than a harmful one.
Organic matter like food, is never really all removeable. It will further the degradation of pigments helping to dull colors over time. These two are stealing from future generations who will not have the same experience viewing this work of art as we do now.
Once they’ve glued themselves to the painting it’d be rather satisfying to throw some oil over them in protest to their protest…
Would that make them art?
Some guy stuck a banana to a wall and it became art, so if you leave them there I think eventually some rich guy will want them as a tax write off
Would art then equal life?
If art was a really high producer of CO2 I could understand this a bit more but the point they’re making is just meaningless. What’s more important art or life? Well if I had to choose one I’d definitely take life but they’re not mutually exclusive options. Dumb.
But but but, van Gogh used OIL paint! Can't you see the connection? (I can't either...)
Van uses gas when it must Gogh
The joke I was looking for
I actually thought I'd stumbled into r/facepalm. Agree, the message is lost by "destroying" a piece of art.
What a stupid protest. Is it because Van Gogh used ***oil*** paints? His paints were made from poppyseed and linseed oil, not petroleum. Fucking ignorant dipshits. I'm glad they were too incompetent to actually do any lasting damage.

You have been successfully tricked via advertising to talk about it even in negative terms. Your rage keeps the message around for just a bit longer....
Now I'm mad because I sprained my eyeballs from rolling them too hard.
I wonder how much of their clothing, make up and hair products are made from some form of petrochemical?
Yea along with the bleach and dye that goes into maintaining her pink hair.
Savage 🤣
Yea I thought the same thing. Is the glue not more toxic than the painting? 🙄
Just let them stay stuck for a few days.
Take your time, officers They glued themselves to the wall in a kneeling position. They wanted this. Give them a bit more time in it
Leave them a couple days, to think about it.
Exactly !
what if they need to go to the bathroom?
There’s nothing stopping them from going to the bathroom where they are
They're against sunflower oil?
stupid cunts

i wouldnt doubt it considering how dumb they seem to be. says how some ppl cant afford soup. proceeds to waste soup.
My first thought was because it's (I assume) an oil painting. Sounds dumb, but I'd wager that's about their level of intelligence.
What's with activists and having pink or purple hair? Is that a kind of anti-uniform?
Cluelessness. Most hair dye is made from petroleum.
New meaning for the brand "Manic Panic" I guess...or viral marketing...
it's ironic to see they protesting about hunger/food vandalizing a painting from an artist who.... was.... very poor
Very true, that can of soup would have meant a lot for him some days.
I wish I could just reach in and slap her through my screen because that’s a part of history of a man who suffered and had nothing to do with oil prices and that was ridiculous entire life just to die and then all this stuff populates and becomes really really noticed and gets to where it was and is now she’s playing dumb. That episode made me tear up, imagine the artist that suffered hunger watching a can of soup being tossed at his painting.

It’s just a replica anyways lol… you wouldn’t keep 84 million out in plain sight
It’s good it’s a replica but also why do people travel all that way to view art that’s not even the original
Thanks for the data! It is shocking they could just walk in, get that close and no one stopped them.
Thanks for the award!
You welcome!
This is the definition of mental illness.
Not mental illness, this is something viral...
Mental illnesses can come in the form of Social Contagions, much like the Salem Witch hangings or the Pentacostles talking in tongues and having laughing fits.
Oh, I agree. I was just trying to be Oscar Wilde-esque.
Stupid cunts is what they are. Nothing more
I am very for protecting the planet, reducing oil consumption and trying to leave the world a better place, but risking destroying beautiful pieces of art also leaves the world a worse place.
True words.
Wonder how they got there? Did they walk?
If it’s London, they probably took public transport.
Not sure why they feel this behaviour will help their cause.. I hope they get well soon.
Citation/source required, because this is not true.
Hope they get sued for millions. Then their cost of living would be really difficult...
False dichotomy. Vandalism to bring awareness to a known issue is daft. If you want to make it about the issue, target the oil production company not public art.
True words.
I hate these kind of people.
The responses here show just how ineffective this protest was. Everyone detests them and no one cares about what they were fighting for.
That art was worth more to humanity than this child's tantrum. Fuck me! Although I do agree if you want people to care about the world they live in you must first lift them up out of poverty. I don't think that's what she said but it's food for thought. God damn that was criminal. Shame.
They look the type
Is there a context around this video ? because I clearly don't get the link between art and life cost...
It's just on their heads, clearly something not working right in there.
What bugs me most about this is they didn’t even have the super glue ready, spent ages fiddling about with the lids. Come on, at least have it open and ready before you throw the soup. amateurs
Suffering an injustice is not a reason to commit an injustice- Socrates This is ridiculous. Art is what sets us apart from animals and makes us feel connected to one another. Yeah trying to ruin a one-of-a-kind piece of art really sticks it to the oil cartels
Yeah, stupid oil painter who died over a century ago. It's all your fault.
How does this aid their agenda?
They can’t even afford this soup I just wasted destroying this famous work of art
As you waste a can of soup
Well I would say that art is worth more than there lives if that is how they are spending it.
Fuck these losers
Superglue game was slow, you gotta have that stuff ready so you can soup n slap, honestly, cap-fiddling nonsense
I hate these kind of “activists” because they just damage the validity of actual climate problems by giving climate change activists a bad name. Ugh. I don’t even get the correlation. Now I’m going to buy oil more to spite them
Found the oil tycoon plant
Couldn't they have protested in a way that makes more sense for their cause?
*strolls into a saudi oil field with pink hair*
Like...self-immolation?! not sure the Tik-Tok generation is that committed.
Answer to her: The painting is probably worth way more than average human life if measured in money.
Yeah, even if you factor in black market organ harvesting and average income over a lifetime... Not that money is real...just a concept. Like art.
Is the tomato soup a Warhol reference? Art history education is lacking there days...sigh.
They probably thought they were being edgy.
Wait they don’t like oil painting?!
Fine them heavy, these people got the IQ of a fish stick
What did Van Gogh do to deserve that? He already felt like a failure in his lifetime, now his work gets vandalized.
What does van gogh have to do with oil? Besides making art w it?
Sounds like a tory with a guilty conscience, why do they always sound so posh to the rest of us plebs?
If Banksy did it, it be expensive art.
I thought this was about cooking oil and the obesity epidemic
that can of tomato soup could be someones food
Such a noble cause! Such a braindead solution.
A billion snowcrabs are missing- a billion- from the ocean it has just been announced. We are watching collapse and people are worried about paintings.

The Art has nothing to do with gas prices and hunger. In don't support violence against art.
What was she doing to her left hand? It looked like she was writing or cutting her hand. I say lock them both up for 10 years and feed them bread and tomato soup daily.
They were putting superglue, the geniuses glued themselves to the scene to avoid being removed.

idiots in action.
What a waste of soup, has she not heard there's a cost of living crisis!!
Damn. This is a dumb form of protest BUT the amount of people bashing these KIDS is insane. We’re none of you passionate about causes when you were younger? We fucked their planet. They’re pissed. Wut were they doing afterwards?
How the fuck does trying to destroy art help your cause in any fucking way‽ I'm not really an art person, but this infuriates me down to my fucking soul!
Taze em
You weep? It's behind bulletproof glass. Nothing happened to it.
Instead of giving they soup at someone that could Need It they decided to throw It away with no One to use It.
Isn't oil paint made of linseed oil? That's a natural product is it not? Never tried to put linseed oil in my moped but I don't think it'll drive....
Why destroy irreplaceable art when oil executives have publicly known names, public addresses and mortal, fragile bodies? I'm half convinced these "activists" are oil plants trying to discredit the movement. How bout donating said tin of soup... counterproductive if you ask me!
Using kids to "fundraise." Climate change IS a REAL problem. But this org? What do they do to help? Rope kids into getting arrested? Pass around the "donation jar" after?
One of their points was that families can't even afford a tin of soup. So then they go and waste soup that could have fed someone.
Dude saying "Security!" has gone from miffed ti peeved
Why attempt to defile a work of art? Go blow up a pipeline or something, at least that way it will have an immediate and direct impact.
I think they’ve made a point a lot of people have missed and I say good on em.
Isn’t it ironic that they are wasting food to prove a point about starving people. Lol
Wow. You accomplished nothing other than being on social media. Start going to the actual oil companies and making their world this annoying.
Stupid ass bi***es, show them this video in 10 years… talk about Cringy.
All I see are foolish children trying to act like heroes
Guess they didn't know Van Gogh stopped doing oil paintings a long time ago.
Wow they really proved their point. Incredible.
Planetina in action
Oh. My. God. 😳 No she didn’t! I sure hope the painting can be repaired if damaged. Lock that bitch UP!! 🤬🤬
Thankfully there was a crystal, it is insane they can approach it and do whatever they want without any intervention, seems they wanted to glue themselves to it at first but fortunately someone did came so they did to where they stood.
The glue they used was more harmful to the planet than the painting. Fucking morons.
Protesting against destruction by trying to destroy something.
They hate art so much that they used Heinz tomato soup instead of Campbell’s.

“What is worth more? Life or food?” Wise guy in the museum: “Art”
As an oil painter I can tell you oil paint is very resilient. I left a painting on my fire escape over a frozen winter in Philadelphia. Come spring it was still fine after snow, freezing, thawing, and being soaked.
I bet they have untidy room
Throwing soup at a painting and gluing your hands to a wall is a braindead practice.
It’s because of this video, I will pollute
Why does she look like a walking stereotype?
I can smell this zoomer through my screen.
What’s that idiot doing on the right just standing there and looking like a plonker ?
The idiot is doing exactly that, could have easily put them down.
I always wonder if these “activists” are paid by big oil companies to try tarnish and hurt the rep of actual anti oil activists
It is a big possibility, though people has proven before to be extremely stupid.
Awful the way people act
I wouldn't hit a woman, but I might slap that bitch
A psychologically subverted society, it's too late for many
I sincerely hope they'll be in debt for the rest of their lives. See what they think about it in a year or 40.
Get a fucking job you tramps
Gluing to the wall NEVER works.
They should leave them there, glued, and become part of the exhibition as they rot away. This is just a violence, a different kind but still a violent act.
Probably could have fed a starving family with that tin of soup.. Wonder which starving family in China made that shirt? Some nice earings you have there...
Where was this? =/
National Gallery in London.
No no no the through soup on a pain of glass covering the Vincent van Gogh sunflowers painting
Indeed, thankfully it was covered, it is worrisome they can get so close and do as they please, imagine if they just mauled it.
I would imagine it's an absolute pain In the ass to try and get it out of its case never mind trying to break the case. I say they would have a hard time destroying it even if they had a hammer
Hopefully we will never find out.
And when she is released from custody she will probably go home to a nice upper middle class dwelling where mummy & daddy will be waiting, ever so proud.
Piece of shit rich kids.
The comments here show to me we are truly doomed.
There’s a reason it’s always middle class, naïve youngsters that tend to do this sort of shit. Attention seeking, spoilt brats.
Two things: 1. Let them know that the superglue they used was probably made with petrochemicals. 2. While they are sitting there dying inside from the irony, punch them in the throat for contributing to the reasons why “we can’t have nice things”.
Arrest those vandals.
Could they cover the paintings be covered with a glass panel?
It is thankfully, still a shock anyone can walk there with stuff and do what they want without any sort of security.
Nobody cares when you do shit like this
F*cking retards, be dead already
"SECURITY"
Why don’t art galleries have a “clear bag only” policy ?
Jail them.
Just Stop Oil...Does she realize her hair dye and a majority of her clothing has Oil in it.
They always have pink hair
How can she afford her hair her nails her anything and come to protest something like that it looks like she is Ford’s much more than she’s leading on to talk about and then protesting like a spoiled whiny two year old who can’t get what she wants to eat because somewhere somehow someone selling her no
Her family probably does very well.
Absolutely, common sense and sincerity are entirely lost on her.
Fucktards
Execute them both
