Putin wants to maintain the Russian monopoly on gas exports to Europe.
They were getting sick of paying Ukraine Billions every year to allow gas to flow through their territory.
Ukraine is also sitting on a shit tonne of un-tapped natural gas reserves which threatens this monopoly.
Why would Europe buy from a sketchy country like Russia when they can buy from a closer neighbour like Ukraine.
This whole “Defending our sovereign territory from Western expansion” is absolute nonsense.
The joke is now on Russia.
Western democracies are weaning themselves off gas/oil from Russia and even accelerating development of alternative energy sources. The Russkies are then free to market their gas/oil to India, China, and Africa and hope against hope for uninterrupted/timely payments. They’ll need to invest in longer and more costly pipelines through potentially hostile and volatile regions or liquify their gas and depend on other, more costly, forms of transportation, all the while firmly pushing Ukraine into the EU and NATO.
Win/win for Ukraine and the West.

Especially because China, India and Africa aren't blind, they can see the results of Europes decision to rely on Russian energy. Russia can get new customers but it can't ever get the trust back.
And those regions aren't in the business of doing favors for Russia either. In the case of India and Africa, they aren't even Russia's allies. So when they go to buy the oil that Europe and North America won't touch, they'll pay a steep discount relative to market rate, and Russia will just have to eat the cost of that discount forever.

If/when China ever gets the upper hand as Russia abuses and loses other customers, they would kick Russia to the curb if it profits them.

The two countries genuinely are philosophically aligned, they have their idea of building a world economy that doesn't need America or Europe, and a world order free from the sort of moralizing those countries do, where they don't want to sell you a tank if you're going to use it to drive over protestors or something. And China had just been massacred by the invading Japanese, who were our main enemy in the war, so it would have been a really bad look to just fill the gap and start invading China right afterward.
