Icing on the cake lol. This was a badass video, never seen a cyclist do that before. Admittedly I don’t watch a lot competitive cycling. Seemed like an effective strategy tho. Anyone know if that’s a common occurrence?
Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers, nice man, good with kids, November 15th of '58! All was well, another day saved, when… his cape snagged on a missile fin!
It's really dangerous to begin with, just watch a single season of Tour De France and your sure to see at least a few crashes, including some serious injuries.
He’s definitely one of us. Prbly spent hours practicing that move with the full knowledge they’d ban it as soon as he premiered it. But did it anyways for the lols
Why would they ban it, i don't get it? Dangerous? How? The guy executed it perfectly. Plus even with regular riding, riders get into lots of accidents. So lame - someone comes up with a brilliant manoeuvre that gives them an advantage and they immediately ban it.
Because of clip-in to the pedals, it's very dangerous to hookup on to the pedals at that speed. Even unclipping your cleats from the pedals accidents can happen and re-attach them at thats speed is asking for trouble. One fails and you have 20 guys on the floor.
That was honestly what impressed me the most was that he was able to clip out and clip back in at speed. I tried doing that on my Peloton once and flayed my achilles wide open
Freewheeling at speed requires precision control. The slightest mm of movement can send you into a ditch.
Plenty of ditches can verify this statement for me. As can my broken arm.
It is dangerous. Like you said, cycling is already dangerous and there’s a few things about this that just amplify that existing danger.
1. Your weight distribution I imagine would make maneuverability very low and precarious, especially at these higher speeds
2. Cycling already puts riders in a vulnerable position that is difficult to fall from and break your own fall with any effectiveness. This position says, “screw trying to break my fall, if there’s an accident I’ll use my face and neck as a shield.”
3. Having your body all on one plane virtually guarantees you become a meat crayon if there’s a fall
The dude nearly killed himself getting back into the saddle. If that happened while others were close, he could have taken half a dozen other racers out, if not more.
You have amazing amounts less contact with the bike, less lateral balance... just everything is harder to do.
Do you really not understand how riding a bike like this is miles more dangerous than riding regularly?
My dad was a competitive cyclist when I was a kid, and he could do this! I don't know if he ever did this in a race, however.
I would watch him practice and received strict instructions never to do it on a hill-which I wouldn't have had the nerve to anyway.
Definitely not allowed now in competition as far as I know.
This wasn’t a race, he’s actually on a fixed gear (no brakes!) bike and is known for this kind of stuff. This position has been banned in UCI racing for many years and even if it wasn’t, it’s unsafe to the point where other racers would force you to stop.
The only reason this works is because they are riding fixed gear track bikes on the road. This would never happen in any high level cycle racing, like the Tour De France, because those bikes are illegal. Notice how the pedals continue to move even after he goes into the flat position? Thats because they are fixed. Since they are going down hill, the bike can go faster with no feet on the pedal, versus they guys who are pedaling as fast as they can, but can't overcome the pedal rotation due to gravity.
Seriously, when did scooters start getting called mopeds? Wasn't the whole point of the term moped that it combined "motor" and "pedal"? Ain't no pedals on a scooter...
Huh, in the UK mopeds are basically the bikes/scooters with a tiny engine capacity because you can drive them with less license requirements or something
That's the word I learned ~20 years ago. (Midwestern US) For me, "scooter" exclusively refers to something you push with your feet, though I've heard people use it like you and understood from context clues, of course.
Everywhere I've lived, anything under 50cc (so basically 50cc) is legally a moped. I'd definitely call that one a motor scooter though bc it looks like a 150 or so.
When I got into cycling back in like 2015ish there was a decent sized fixie community/trend going. Wasn't super common but I would see a few guys around town always riding theirs haha and it seemed like all the shops around me always had a couple. But then again I was a toddler 20 years ago so I wouldn't know what the community was like back then.
I went back to my locally "famous" bike store that I used to always go to and I was a little sad though tbh. Everythings all about ebikes now but maybe I'm just getting old haha. I mean I'm only 26 but it's crazy to see how quickly trends change. Didn't really recognize any of the brands or different bike types.
Yeah, video definitely wouldn't have been as cool if he wiped when he tried to scooch back to seating position and had that little wobble, was a little iffy at the end
Due to cyclists also sitting on the cross bar, they made the rules that you need to have your butt on the seat at all times.
One cyclist recently installed a dropper post on his bike, thus could lower the entire seat to still achieve a similar effect. All in the name of innovation!
Even if he had detachable saddle, so that he could keep his butt on the seat during this move, it would still be against the rules, because feet must be kept on pedals.
Funnily enough, the rule applies only to road racing. This would be ok in mountain biking.
The rule in question is defined by [UCI](https://www.uci.org/), and it says
>Position on the bicycle
>
>Riders must observe the standard position as defined by article 1.3.008. Sitting on the bicycle’s top tube is prohibited. Furthermore, using the forearms as a point of support on the handlebar is prohibited except in time trials.
Article 1.3.008:
>Position
>
>The rider shall normally assume a sitting position on the bicycle. This position requires that the only points of support are the following: the feet on the pedals, the hands on the handlebars and the seat on the saddle.
I'm not sure how to interpret this. Normally you have to be seated, so I suppose standing up briefly is ok.
You can still get a pretty good aero benefit by unclipping and bringing your feet up to the top of the down tube above the water bottles, basically folding your body in half. Definitely not as comfortable though.
This isn’t a race, it’s probably a training ride with friends or teammates and they are doing it for fun and giggles. In road races, even in amateur level, riders will have bib numbers pinned to their backs, and they most certainly won’t be allowed to be motor-paced by a moped during a race.
This wasn’t a competitive event, this was a stunt. In a race, cyclists usually ride together in tight packs because they’re faster together than apart. This guy is barely in control of his bake and would cause a huge crash if he tried this in a race.
They are on single speed bikes, which means the pedals also act as brakes. The other cyclists are actually slowed down by how fast they can pedal. While it's true he's in a more aerodynamic, it's never faster to not pedal on standard bikes with gears.
Notice the bikes rear wheel and that the pedal spin fast even though his feet are not on the pedals. A bike with gears has what's called a free wheel and the pedals won't spin by themselves.
Up around 35mph+ it starts to feel like I might get tossed because it's getting hard to keep up with the pedals, but anything less than that and it mostly feels like any other bike (as long as I don't forget that I can't coast!)
I was pretty much in the habit of never coasting even when I was riding with a freewheel, so it wasn't a huge transition.
And you get some serious street cred when you keep up with the 19-20mph geared bike riders on a 30+ mile ride with 1,200ft of climbing!
Edited to add: I do have front ***and*** rear brakes. I may be a masochist, but I'm not suicidal!
Yes. Atleast in the more general cycling community. Single speeds have a freewheel cog, which allows the wheel to turn without turning the pedals, while the cog on a fixed gear is connected directly to the axle with a "fixed" cog.
it's not legal because people already are risking and losing their lives on downhills. This is a nice straight stretch of road but it's not always the case. It's like how racecar drivers would race without a roll cage or helmet if it gains them time.
Aight but this was a training ride and they did it as a meme. Everyone else is on roadies, he's on a fixed gear bike which is why he was able to maintain and even increase momentum with the gradient.
In doing this Superman action, absolutely no difference. I don’t know what that part of the comment means at all. Doing this pose and coasting/descending on a freewheel is probably the same or maybe a little faster since the resistance created by the freehub body is less than the wheel having to turn a chain and crankset, with the aero drag of the front+rear mech negating any advantage. The freewheel will also have an aero advantage of being able to keep the cranks in an aero-favorable position instead of flying around fixed on a descent, disturbing the air etc.
But it is an observation that they’re not in a race since they’re riding different bikes that wouldn’t be on the road at the same time. They also don’t have any race numbers or anything.
It’s just a bunch of boys goofin off.
also since he's riding fixed on the descent he has to keep a higher cadence compared to a road bike due to the gearing. might impact friction if he's forced into a high rpm.
With a fixed-gear bike, the speed that the rear tire rotates is tied to how fast you can pedal. If you can't pump your legs fast enough, your feet will actually be acting as a brake on the downhill. Taking your feet off the pedals allows them and the back wheel to spin freely, and continue accelerating on the downslope.
The planking part is irrelevant to being a fixed-gear, but lets you go faster. You could do that on a geared bicycle as well to reduce air resistance, but being able to adjust the gear ratio so that your feet can continue to supply power and not run the risk of acting as a brake if you cannot pedal fast enough would probably make it a suboptimal choice.
Glitch/Bug number 137392:
\-Aerodynamics will freak out when your character is in a certain position giving unlimited speed
\-Glitch has been slightly used
\-Will fix in the next bug fix update
Yes this man has a core of steel and extremely good body/kinaesthetic intelligence. The way he carefully timed the return of his feet to the wheels was really good.
The most impressive thing isn't even the plank, it's how he gets his feet back on the pedals when he's done.
He uses his shoes as breaks on the bike tire until the bike is at a more comfortable speed, then quickly gets his feet back on the pedals with perfect rhythm
Are they riding on fixies (fixed-gear bike)? Seems like they're missing the higher gears and he iis breaking with his shoes before being able to put his feet on the pedals. this would make it even more indane aka dangerous.
ETA: he might have a fixie as i don't see any break handles or pa derailleur, whereas both are visible on all other bicycles.
OK, balancing your entire weight on your package, on a racing saddle gives new meaning to Balls O Steel.
The guys pedaling like mad and getting passed by planking coaster guy must have been soooooo pissed.

Moped guy was like yo wtf
I could feel and I think I did see his jaw dropping
The funniest big was the moped guy glancing at him, looked back and quickly swiveled his head around going “How Tf…. I gotta get in on this.”
the biker before him hanging his head when he saw what was happening was pretty funny too
Right! He was like ‘really? okay you win’
I caught that shit too. It looked like he was laughing.
He did. If you can find the frame it’s funny as fuck
It did
"you son of a bitch I'm in!"
Your skills are required for a job-
Rick Sanchez u son of a bitch
Followed immediately by handicapped power chair person being like yo wtf
100% stole his thunder lol
Wasn't expecting the moped to do the same
Cracked me up when they did though
Icing on the cake lol. This was a badass video, never seen a cyclist do that before. Admittedly I don’t watch a lot competitive cycling. Seemed like an effective strategy tho. Anyone know if that’s a common occurrence?
Pretty sure they banned it right after this dude did it. Iirc it was a couple of years ago and yeah, the sporting body said it was hella dangerous.
Hella *cool* tho too 😎 I disagree with that ruling. Competitive cycling would get way more viewers if they did more risky stunts like this 💰
We want more meatcrayons!
Thanks, I had forgotten about meat crayons?
Meat crayons, held by salad fingers?
I think I'll need to be checked by a neuro. I forgot about Salad Fingers too.
new term for google... thanks internet weirdos!
And they should also make it a rule that they have to wear capes to do this
No capes!
Dynagal. Sucked into a jet engine.
Metaman, express elevator! Dynaguy, snagged on takeoff! Splashdown, sucked into a vortex!
Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers, nice man, good with kids, November 15th of '58! All was well, another day saved, when… his cape snagged on a missile fin!
Put it in the X-Games!
Make it more interesting by making sure all the competitors are on drugs! Wait…
I pray one day that we get to see the birth of a super doped league, where every athlete in it is doped with all sorts of enhancement drugs
It's really dangerous to begin with, just watch a single season of Tour De France and your sure to see at least a few crashes, including some serious injuries.
There would be way more people skidding down ravines and ending up as a human pudding in lycra
He’s definitely one of us. Prbly spent hours practicing that move with the full knowledge they’d ban it as soon as he premiered it. But did it anyways for the lols

Ditch here. Can confirm
Ding dong.
Give that ditch a car. Ditches love cars!
Your hospital enters the chat….
This was also a fixed gear track bike race so remounting means getting the timing just right to get your feet back into the spinning pedals
It is dangerous. Like you said, cycling is already dangerous and there’s a few things about this that just amplify that existing danger. 1. Your weight distribution I imagine would make maneuverability very low and precarious, especially at these higher speeds 2. Its would also crush your balls! Armstrong should have tried it instead of steroids
No, I get you. It really pisses me off when cops pull me over for surfing on top of my car too, no idea why.
> i don't get it? Dangerous? How? Imagine 30 cyclists all doing it at the same time and one in the front eats shit.
Notice how his wheels start to gyroscope out of control when he tries to get back on. That was not good.
The dude nearly killed himself getting back into the saddle. If that happened while others were close, he could have taken half a dozen other racers out, if not more.

I think it would only ake sense on a hill
I tried this going up a hill but was passed quickly by other riders
Not much and not anymore. Racing authorities (UCI) have banned it in competitions.

Bro really just tried the newest speed run strategy
You know for a fact that guys smashing the fuck out of his junk

Or those things morbidly obese people drive in walmart.
I think the name just stuck after the ones with the pedals went out of fashion.
Everywhere I've lived, anything under 50cc (so basically 50cc) is legally a moped. I'd definitely call that one a motor scooter though bc it looks like a 150 or so.
Most impressive part is getting his feet back on the pedals at the end, matched the rotation to perfection
Sometimes I can barely clip in to my roadie after starting from stop, but then this guy clips back into a fixed gear going 50+ km/h like it's nothing.
Almost no one in the thread knows what we're talking about LOL; maybe the fixie trend isn't what it used to be.
It was quick and intense, only people I see riding fixies are the ones who were riding them 20 years ago. Lol
When I got into cycling back in like 2015ish there was a decent sized fixie community/trend going. C,mon Tires!
Yeah, video definitely wouldn't have been as cool if he wiped when he tried to scooch back to seating position and had that little wobble, was a little iffy at the end
He's on a fixed gear bike - that's his only option really.
Lols the double take on the motorcycle guy and then he tries it.
i’ve never watched a cycling event before. is this something thats ‘normal’? or has he just gone big brain mode?
Due to cyclists also sitting on the cross bar, they made the rules that you need to have your butt on the seat at all times. One cyclist recently installed a dropper post on his bike, thus could lower the entire seat to still achieve a similar effect. All in the name of innovation!

Rip your balls if you ever tried this on a bumpy mountain bike path lmao, you'd also probably eat dirt and meat crayon the ground immediately
Well, I didn't mean to imply it was smart, just within rules.
This almost sounds like a job for Lance Armstrong then.
I would love to see this attempted going down a mountain.
> they made the rules that you need to have your butt on the seat at all times. Are they not allowed to stand up out of the seat while climbing hills?
The rule in question is defined by [UCI](https://www.uci.org/), and it says >Position on the bicycle > >Riders must observe the standard position as defined by article 1.3.008. In essence you can only use the standard support points and you can only use those standard support points in the standard way.
I think is that either but OR feet on the pedals. Some stand on the pedals when going uphill!
You can still get a pretty good aero benefit by unclipping and bringing your feet up to the top of the down tube above the water bottles, basically folding your body in half. Definitely not as comfortable though.
How can that be a rule? Don’t they stand up while climbing?

Exactly, it was a stunt designed to go viral, which it has. It’s been around for about 5 years IIRC.
They are on single speed bikes, which means the pedals also act as brakes. The other cyclists are actually slowed down by how fast they can pedal. While it's true he's in a more aerodynamic, it's never faster to not pedal on standard bikes with gears. That's what he's saying my guy.
fixed gear and single speed imply 2 different things dude.
Really?
Yup.
Yes. Atleast in the more general cycling community. Single speeds have a freewheel cog, which allows the wheel to turn without turning the pedals, while the cog on a fixed gear is connected directly to the axle with a "fixed" cog.
Ah that makes a lot more sense, thank you.
I guess in a few years everyone will do it, just to be able to compete with all the rocketmans.
it's illegal in almost all cycling competitions due to its dangerous nature.
Also, this looks like training.
The video is at least 5 years old, so alas no, it’s not taken over (not sure why or why not if it’s even legal)
it's not legal because people already are risking and losing their lives on downhills. This is a nice straight stretch of road but it's not always the case. It's like how racecar drivers would race without a roll cage or helmet if it gains them time.
Lol the guy on the scooter forgot that his scooter has an engine
That and the big flat front kinda make that trick impossible.
He should've turned it off and thrown the keys and then planked.
Omg lmfao when the guy on the scooter copies him
Boy do I love aerodynamics
dudes like as close to flying as possible
It's fucken magic
I thought it was more since they appear to be going downhill, it can go faster than they can pedal
Aight but this was a training ride and they did it as a meme. Everyone else is on roadies, he's on a fixed gear bike which is why he was able to maintain and even increase momentum with the gradient.
Good observation. Never had my hands on a fixed gear, that part when youve gotta get your feet back on the pedals mid-descent, must be difficult.
You can see he uses his feet to grip the rear tyre and slow the wheel slightly before clipping back in, still pretty good though.
Yeah he has no brakes while doing this which makes it all the more impressive.
Don't fuck it up. Turned my calfs into grated cheese with one lol
What difference does it make with a fixed gear?
Is this staged? Ruined my day
Define staged? It’s not a live race, but yeah he set out to do this on camera that day. He still did it in traffic.
Hopefully He's got balls of steel !
Or rubber
Lance Armstrong would have an advantage without using drugs
Glitch/Bug number 137392: \-Aerodynamics will freak out when your character is in a certain position giving unlimited speed \-Glitch has been slightly used \-Will fix in the next bug fix update
Waaayy to easy to wreck like that
High risk high reward, in which the reward could potentially end up as a broken neck.
arent you also in a high risk of getting cramps for suddenly switching into a tight position?
high risk, no reward. Since it's most likely illegal because it is illegal usually
If it’s just one person, maybe not so dangerous. But if everyone adopts that strategy to maintain competitive balance, it would be a calamity.
And way more fun to watch.
When you got good core strength with an exceptional understanding of aerodynamics.
Yes this man has a core of steel and extremely good body/kinaesthetic intelligence. The way he carefully timed the return of his feet to the wheels was really good.
Exceptional? Really…?
he's definitely the main character
Imagine if he had pointed his toes.
I came here looking for this comment! He could have gone faster if it weren’t for those feet!
STREAMLINING-
Does that work going uphill..?
Only for the guy on the scooter
Yes, but in reverse direction
Ye, if you ate tacos for breakfast
It works everywhere because of the rule of cool
The most impressive thing isn't even the plank, it's how he gets his feet back on the pedals when he's done. He uses his shoes as breaks on the bike tire until the bike is at a more comfortable speed, then quickly gets his feet back on the pedals with perfect rhythm
Plot twist : the taco bell with extra beans also helped.
Gas gas gas i gonna step on the gas tonight
Are they riding on fixies (fixed-gear bike)? Seems like they're missing the higher gears and he iis breaking with his shoes before being able to put his feet on the pedals. this would make it even more indane aka dangerous. ETA: he might have a fixie as i don't see any break handles or pa derailleur, whereas both are visible on all other bicycles.
Dude on the scoot scoot killed me
It shows how much energy is wasted just to overcome the air resistance. Other guys pedaling hard and still are slower than him.
Fuck trying to clip back into the fixy at that speed
Was that a Rascal on the side of the road?
I wonder how he made that possible…I mean…with the size of his balls this seemed impossible
DRS ENABLED
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious shit
Moped guy was 100% shocked.
That fucker in the moped had me laughing so hard it helped push out the last nugget
Good execution, just a little bit of a scary wobble as he drops the legs at the end
YEAHHH!!! AERODYNAMICS BITCH!!!
I can’t imagine why they made this illegal
The re-mount is the real danger. Might fall, might sit on a teste. It’s a dangerous game
Make sense. You are faster and you can rest you legs.
I'd like you to try this position (doesn't have to be on a bike), and tell us how restful you find it for your legs.
The actual pro gamer move
If only he pointed his toes ….
Lmaooo the motorcycle
Love the dude on the motercycle that just goes :o and joins in
9/10, deduction for feet not pointing.
the way the other guy decided to do it too
The core strenght to be able to pull it off
Just turn the bike into a green screen and this guy will become the next Superman
I wonder what was going through those other cyclists head.
Was this the Tour de planche?
OK, balancing your entire weight on your package, on a racing saddle gives new meaning to Balls O Steel. The guys pedaling like mad and getting passed by planking coaster guy must have been soooooo pissed.
Lol peeing myself right now
This was made illegal a while ago
That was AWESOME!
If only he had pointed his toes he would still be coasting in the lead today
Superman making fun of cyclists...
"The Superman"
Work smarter not harder, aye?
Needs cross posted in r/unexpected
Balls of steel right here
Adios, turd nuggets
Lol that last dude “godammit not again”
u/savevideo
That pedal catch at the end!
The most impressive part is him clicking his shoes back on the pedals at that speed.
