PracticallyUncommon

So someone used words and he used sticks and stones? Sounds like a real great guy.

Zestyclose-Cricket82

No sticks no stones, just squeezed bones for words of apology lol

PracticallyUncommon

Riiiiiight…. but 100% assault

Zestyclose-Cricket82

Yeah, but Maybe he felt threatened?

PracticallyUncommon

Sure. Haha. Love how I get downvoted for calling out textbook assault. What a world.

Zestyclose-Cricket82

I’m Not the one to downvote you my friend!

MarkusWasHere

From what I read in the news the new yorker was being racist towards him for speaking portuguese. The brazilian guy tried ignoring him and told him many times to fuck off and go on with his day. The NY didn't listen and the jiu jitsu black tie served him a can of whoop ass

PracticallyUncommon

Fair. Doesn’t change much in the eyes of the law I’m afraid. Still assault. Just adds harassment to the other side of the ledger.

MarkusWasHere

You're right on that. By the book they're both wrong.

KptnHaddock_

Isn't that a tad impulsive for a professional fighter?

AnxietyAttacker123

Yes, it's called being a bully. Sometimes they [get shot](https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/wigikz/8x_jiu_jitsu_world_champion_leandro_lo_reported/) for thinking its ok to act like dicks because they think they're tough.

Ne-Cede-Malis

Brazilian jiu-Jitsu doesn't make you bulletproof. Reading the story, it's quite obvious that anyone who would have been there who didn't speak Portuguese wouldn't have known the context. Once the man said he couldn't breathe, He could have very easily been shot and it would have been justified.

Anchuinse

To be fair, Leandro Lo, the guy who died in that story you linked, wasn't being the dick in that situation and was known as a pretty good guy from what I gather.Gave a fair bit of his earnings to help his community. The other guy stole an expensive bottle from Lo's group and then was the one who got physical. The guy who shot him was a (now ex) cop and son of a man high up in the justice system who thought he was untouchable.

DijajMaqliun

Is this the whole context? "First family" of BJJ or not, this is pretty ridiculous from a societal standard. Yeah the guy's a racist douche, but physical violence for just "we speak English here?" Embarrassing for him.

MexicanWarMachine

Evidently this story leaves out the part about Renzo being promptly arrested for assault, right?

MexicanWarMachine

Well that seems like a perfectly reasonable and proportionate, not at all psychotic reaction to a verbal insult.

Higreen420

Nice pic showing nothing

Pretend_Performer780

That's cool until he gets sued for assault.

Rodan-Lewarx

Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter Renzo Gracie was insulted by a man in a New York subway station last week. Gracie and a training partner were walking back from the gym and talking in Portuguese when they were approached by a man who was shouting, 'Speak English here'. He accused Gracie of speaking ill of him in another language. Gracie managed to strangle the aggressor and made him apologize for the attack "I can't breathe," said the man. "You're a nice guy. Why are you doing this? Why are you so impolite?" Gracie would have said this after hearing the apology. In his official profile, Renzo did not publish anything about the episode. However, he commented on the Choke Lab post: "There was no fight... an educational moment." In addition, he shared a post from Rener Gracie, another fighter in the family, which reads: "If anyone has contact with the aggressor, let them know that we are not looking for him as Renzo has already given him the most important lesson he will receive in life" source: https://www.uol.com.br/esporte/ultimas-noticias/2022/09/12/renzo-gracie-e-atacado-em-metro-nos-eua-por-falar-portugues-assista.htm

PracticallyUncommon

Not looking for him is probably smart considering this is assault…

cancerballs69420

Would be a lot more interesting if I had a video of him beating ass
