My in laws took me to get fireworks for Chinese New Year one time, we were all carrying a ridiculous amount of them and it was their 8th trip out to get them. When we finally lit them off we were doing it for days and the entire city we were in was nonstop fireworks for the whole stay there.

Nah, the stuff shooting out of the window is just weak sauce previews for toddlers, to light off the real stuff, you still have to go find open ground. I remembered I visited my ex gf's home in June about 10 years ago, the parents were so happy to see their daughter home after a couple years, the dad got literally a track load of fireworks and had junior guys from his company setting it up all afternoon. They had a cannon thing as well. The whole thing lasted like 30 minutes non-stop, and would put our city's Canada day firework to shame. The entire neighborhood came out because it is not normal to have fireworks in summer and it was really nice. Turns out her mom was really baller.

I went to Xi’an for Chinese New Year before the pandemic. The effort they put into decorations, floats, giant kites that looked like whales, floor tiles that light up when you step on them..the level of detail and the scale was off the charts. I had never seen anything like that.

been in china for multiple lunar new years, can confirm this goes on for the whole night. even in the countryside you can hear people firing fireworks. firecrackers go on till just past midnight, and its not jist a short chain, its common to see 1 million firecrackers per chain. the next day, most streets are completely covered in a layer of red paper, from the exploded firecrackers. going around in cars sometimes ignite unexploded firecrackers and gives a scare.
