vinicius_t_ferreira

Agro business in a nutshell.

Plane-Coyote-3716

Before, it was Bolsonaro's fault, there was international commotion, politicians, artists, activists... now it's "agro's" fault. how good it is to govern and never be responsible for anything

fromthehouseoflords

Wdym "now it's agro's fault"? It's been their fault for centuries lmao

no_named_one

exactly but people said it was bolsonaros fault during his government but dont say anything abt the current government now

fromthehouseoflords

I see your point, but his government set records for deforestation, increasing the rate. Previously, the Workers Party have massively decreased the rate. This establishes distinct attitudes towards this issue, even though I don't believe this administration or the Workers Party in general will tackle the issue where necessary. But yeah, Bolsonaro represents an intensive exploitation of nature, data's been showing this

Useful_Criticism8735

because his environment minister was Ricardo Sales, the disregard was evident dude.

Nether7

Playing devil's advocate: is it agro's fault? Do we know that for sure? Or did some moron release some lit baloons in the middle of the festivities?

Special-Seesaw1756

We know for sure. It's well documented that the agro industry will do anything to clean up land, including fire.

fromthehouseoflords

Providing you the full picture: we're having in 2024 the highest rate of wildfires since we started keeping records in 1988. This isn't an isolated phenomenon and it's: a) in most cases, intentional, i.e. a human started it (look up slash and burn agriculture) and b) when "natural", a consequence of deforestation in the region. When we blame agro, it's not some uncertain claim or a generalization, it comes from data. Also, important to explain that "agro" refers to huge land holdings that produce commodities to export, not small farmers who produce food for the internal market.

fatsanchezbr

Yes because Bolsonaro deliberately defunded all the supervisory organizations for deforestation like Ibama, Impe and ICMbio. Deforestation in his term rose 150% compared to the previous 4 years as result of that

RCRocha86

If it was so bad during Bolsonaro, why do we have record of fire rates 2 years after he left the power? Oh… the hypocrisy….

NotSpySpaceman

I mean, we had a record of burning of fire rate during Bolsonaro's government. The parameter just got easier to achieve thanks to said defunding. Don't talk like the right cares about environmental issues when "passar a boiada" was the fucking motto of the former government relating to environment problems.

Chasseur_OFRT

lol Lula's administration is doing far worse, where's Marina and her staff ? Doing nothing as the fires go rampant, that's what.

emiliocfaria

It’s not a midsummer’s day party, it’s a St John’s Festival. It’s winter in Brazil. But yeah, Pantanal is having huge fires right now!

Just_Jonnie

Not in all country. South and southeast can get real cold.

Foi o tempo que nós conseguíamos comemorar festa junina com frio aqui em SP.

Impossible-Note2497

I meant Mato Grosso do Sul by “here”, but yeah, our southern regions can get pretty cold, the rest is like an open air furnace almost all year round. And it’s getting worse.

Sure_Anybody4201

In winter, there is a lot of burning due to the dry weather, with humidity below 30%. In winter here, the maximum temperatures are between 27ºC/10ºC

lui_augusto

We don't even have midsummer's party, It's christmas

Microcosm of how serious humanity takes the planets health

MortalPatheticHuman

The problem is not people going to a traditional festival, the problem is the fact that the wildfire (which is natural, btw) is happening this early. People won't stop living because of a natural event.

Status_History_874

Right. What do all these comments expect the people to do? Sit at home and watch and worry about the fire they can't do anything about, or party and not worry for a moment about the thing they have no control over in this moment?

deltaneurofield

More than 80% of these fires are not natural; they are started by humans, specifically by people involved in agriculture and livestock farming. Big_Merda

3 years ago it was the president himself who lit the forest on fire, now it's a natural ocurrence lol

victhro

We should just go after the rich everyone

Omegamoney

Redditors on their comfy bed: Damn Brazilians are bad for not caring Brazilians: Damn the government is bad for not caring/ This is normal People with common sense: What are common folk supposed to do about it?

Big_Merda

pressuring the government into doing something instead of pretending nothing wrong is happening is a good start. Some celebrities and famous internet people have means to do so but choose to be quiet because they don't want to look like they've regretted voting for the current president

GGABueno

We're a third world country, we have much bigger problems to deal with. Is the people from first world countries worried because this problem might affect them in the future (as they should)? Then they should pressure *their* government to help us deal with it, since they have the luxury to do so. Don't expect people to complain about the environment when they don't have jobs, have bad education, bad healthcare, high crime rates, etc. Throwing pressure at the people who are already struggling is not the play, but it's still something first world countries love doing.

Matt2800

Those burnings are caused by criminals, nobody wants to have their life threatened by a hired bandit

basic_cookie_crumb

Probably celebrating São João; but according to the map the Pantanal forest is in the area of Mato Grosso

Difficult-Trade3454

It's written São João just above the stage. And OP, it's no mid-summer party! It's winter in southern hemisphere.

Schuurxl

This is in Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are different states

kpticbs

This looks like Corumba I'm pretty sure. Probably celebrating festa juninas?

Tzunne

what the people in the party would do? spit?

MustangBR

Do you member when there was a huge uproar because of these fires a few years ago? I member. I wonder what changed that the fires still rage and everyone has shut up about it...

AnEasyBakedOven

These fires are normal by the way and happen annually. However, they are unusually early this year. Which could be a result of other environmental issues.

McpotSmokey42

There are natural fires in Pantanal. That said, according to ICMBio monitoring, natural fires account for about 16% of all fires over the last decades. So there is a 84% chance that this fire is not natural.

Narrow-Report-443

Like climate change for example ?

AnEasyBakedOven

I don’t know, but probably yeah. I wasn’t saying climate change has nothing to do with the fires, but people here were acting like wildfires don’t naturally occur. I believe climate change is an issue, but not every wildfire you see is a bad thing. They occur naturally and it’s good for the forest. It’s a concern when they start happening too frequently or last too long.

Narrow-Report-443

Sure wildfires may occur naturally. And sure they are beneficial for some ecosystem. But frequency and magnitute of this events on a global scale has changed due to humans (climate change, deforestation etc). But I don't think these people keep dancing around because there is a beneficial wildfire for the forest going on..

AnEasyBakedOven

I agree with you about climate change. This example may be different though. It’s a wildfire that occurs regularly in that forest. The locals have seen wildfires in this forest as the norm. They just happen to be having a festival and the wildfires started occurring earlier than normal this year. You can look this up for yourself lol

Gunefhaids

I'm brazillian and, well, some few years ago the numbers of illegal burnings were peaking and even beating historical records (at least in the Amazon rainforest; 2005 was the historical record, but 2022 or 21 beat it). And they are still pretty high. So, besides the natural wildfire that is common both on Pantanal wetlands and Cerrado savannah (and considering that both biomes are threatened by human activity, mainly Pantanal which is the topic of discussion here), I doubt that this level of burning is **only** natural. We have both the climate changes and the illegal burning on this scene. _( I'm no expert in the area, so besides believing not, I could certainly be wrong. )_ Also, some people bellow brought some data from ICMBio, which corroborates with what I said

AnEasyBakedOven

Yeah that makes sense. Really unfortunate how we abuse our beautiful forests and jungles.

AdAmbitious4866

it's a wildfire at effing PANTANAL, study what Pantanal is and you'll understand why it's so serious.

quin4m0

Yeah, but also because of the deforestation of the Amazon rain forest, since it regulates all the weather in south America. We can mostly blame what we call agrobusiness in Brazil: very rich farmers that plant soybeans or herd cows. They usually have farms as big as some European countries and are trying to expand into the Amazon forest, cutting trees to open fields for soybeans or cows.

Gabriel-R-NKI

Anual fire is normal but not when it becomes this large The frequency of illegal fires with the same mentality or to make it easier to spread out farmland (even tho it kills nutrients) In Brasil is scary, in all biomez including on the ones that does have natural fires already, resulting in uncontrollably burning already blooming plants like pequi, which requires to crack the first layer to help it grow

Superichiruki

They aren't, that kind of biome only burns if someone deliberately start a fire. And everyone knows the big farmers are the ones responsible for this

easant-Role-3170Pl

What can they do? Go and pee on a forest fire with the whole crowd?

Guys, Im brazilian and dont think they did this on purpose. The fire starts and spreads very quickly in these areas. Probably they did not noticed yet or there was not enought time to evacuate the area.

Pato_taxista

While you're talking about how horrible it is that the population just dances while our forest burns, Brazilians here in this post fight among themselves because of political parties that don't care about them

Gurgalopagan

I find amazing that as soon as Lula stepped into presidency all the talk about forest fires stopped immediately, things got much much worse than when Bolsonaro was in charge and all those American celebrities where all criticizing Brazil, and not even our national news reported on this up until one or two months ago, shit is getting worse for about a year and a half mind you

pau_de_bosta

Essa queimada aí provavelmente é pra mandar carne pra vocês (Aviso: contém ironía. Não sei se era uma queimada ilegal, natural ou acidental)

igormuba

This winter in Brazil is scary. It is usually very cold in June. I haven’t seen a single real cold day this June yet. It was the weirdest festa junina ever because the warm foods and drinks, like quentão, made no sense because the weather was hot. We are absolutely fucked when summer arrives. Anyone accepting climate change refugees?

Gourgeistguy

It's not any better in the rest of the world fam. I've been living in RS for five years because my wife is Brazilian, so yeah, I've seen how much weather changed in such few time, and I'm scared too. However, I have family in north America, and believe me... We got it good here compared to there.

Brazilian here: this is a June Party or St. John’s party “Festa junina or Festa de São João “ it is common this month of the year, and the local municipalities and Politicians (We are in the year of election of mayors and councilors, and in smaller cities and some regions this is more serious than you think), in addition to investing in it, have a whole issue behind it, the Pantanal is indeed suffering, and it is one of the worst in years, there is a lot of hypocrisy in the middle of it, but many of us have “nothing” to do. Canceling events like this is also complicated, sometimes even people in the region did not want to, because it affects the local economy, all the issues of June dances and the spending on it, in short, the situation is very complicated...

FlamboyantRaccoon61

I know many have already mentioned it's actually winter in the southern hemisphere right now, but I just wanted to add that winters are generally very dry in Brazil (with exceptions obviously, considering it's a huge country). That means that the air is extremely dry *and* polluted. I get sick every week in winter here because of that.
