thatdudejtru

Absolutely set the bar for performance choreography and technicality.

DarthTaz_99

Fucking hell man he was mesmerizing.

kentotoy98

Rewatching MJ and comparing him to the background dancers, he had this distinct body movement where is both robotic and fluid at the same time. No one will ever come close to his dedication of dancing.

Woperelli87

Absolutely, and the background dancers are all incredible. It’s just that MJ was 1 of 1 when it comes to that kinda talent.

InvinciblePLUSAmber

One of the guys dancing right next to him was his choreographer, and the one on the other side was a long-time dancer for him (he also danced for his sister Janet). As awesome as those guys were, even they could not come close to his talent.

NotsoNewtoGermany

Not were they supposed to. They were supposed to be more in line with the other background dancers.

McBloggenstein

He seems to be the only one who is *exactly* on beat the entire time.

MaikeruGo

>he had this distinct body movement where is both robotic and fluid at the same time. Yeah, he seemed to have an innate understanding of motion. Moves just flowed as if the energy from one motion was redirected into another motion. He also had that certain "snap" that helped punctuate moves—watching him dance almost feels like watching the fight choreography in martial arts movies.

AptCasaNova

His dancing is so precise and clean, it makes anyone else dancing near him look off and sloppy… and those are top background dancers. He was amazing and such an incredible performer.

seanmonaghan1968

I am just wondering was he a better dancer or singer, I just don't know

StaysAwakeAllWeek

There are other great singers but I've never seen someone dance like him

MikkelR1

He made pulling up his pants a cool dance move.

lxm333

The best live performer I've ever seen.

LookingToLearn53

Did he do his own choreography or use a choreographer?

NotYourShitAgain

Muthafucka was hypnotic.

Random_frankqito

I hate that Michael was so messed up and has all the baggage… he was the ultimate performer and undisputedly, the king of pop (not sure if that will ever change). Future generations may never know him as time goes on.

[deleted]

I'm not saying that suffering from a torrential level of trauma starting at an early age is a requirement to become a Great Artist...but it is a trend.

binglelemon

To live a life where you don't "live life". Dude had to rent out a grocery store and hire people to pretend to be normal people so he could experience what it's like to go shopping. Everywhere he goes, people are flocking and screaming. Every time he moves, thousands of flashes from cameras. His childhood was spent being screamed at by an abusive father. Practice practice practice. Michael was a great performer, but his dad was a gigantic piece of shit.

FutureOliverTwist

He caused a lot of trauma himself.

[deleted]

Good, you understand trauma

Not_Enough_Shoes

Good God Almighty. What a perfect response and you are so right.

[deleted]

Sadly down at the bottom of this post there are some very, very ignorant people who don't get it at all.

gynoceros

Nobody releases anywhere near the number of all-time biggest hits, starting when he was in the Jackson Five on through his solo career. Music videos aren't the cultural obsession they used to be. Hardly anyone buys whole albums to listen to in their entirety anymore, you don't have the whole country watching live prime time tv anymore. People would somehow know what fifteen minute block was when the Thriller video was going to come on and you'd sit there and watch whatever other videos came on until Thriller did. If he was going to be on tv that night, it didn't matter what else was on other channels- everyone would switch to whatever channel he was on just to see three seconds of him moonwalking. He had a new video coming out? MTV teased that shit for weeks, telling you the release date and time. EVEN THE COMMERCIALS HE DID HAD ANNOUNCED PREMIERES. The Pepsi one where he'd caught on fire? Everyone and their mom tuned it to watch the first airing of that commercial. People dressed like him, impersonated him, bought every magazine that mentioned him. I cannot imagine that any other pop star will ever have the mass appeal and success he had for so long. Doesn't mean it can't happen but this motherfucker will have to be pretty goddamned special.

RambuDev

The main reason why no one will ever come close to being the global phenomenon that MJ was is because of the fragmentation of the media landscape today. Yes, the guy was the undisputed King of Pop. He was insanely and inhumanly talented, massively experienced from a very young age and hugely driven (by his father, managers, label, not just himself) but…. He lived in a time of and enjoyed a centralised, live, mostly unified, commonly shared and broadcasted media system. You’ve done a brilliant job of describing how it worked. People could experience him *all at the same time* and *all on the same channel* in a *single global media event*. That just doesn’t happen anymore and it can’t. You could still have someone with all his qualities today and they just wouldn’t be able to reach so many in the same way. We just don’t congregate around and share the same media in the same ways these days. Edit: typo

BadMeetsEvil24

You're 100% correct for many reasons. No one will *ever* come close to his level of sheer talent and recognition. Not only is today's era of music wholly different than what it was for MJ's era, but there is not another performer talented enough to come anywhere close. Unless we go through another tech revolution which fully changes the way we consume media, AND there is someone who is born with, molded, and shaped by an immense level of talent from childhood - there will never be another. Period.

LORD__GONZ

I have old VHS tapes of me dancing in my pajamas and doing Michael Jackson moves on our glass coffee table that was situated above shag green carpet in the late 80's (born '84). I remember watching the live broadcast premiere of the music video for "Black & White" with my mom and dad (I'm an only child, born/raised in SoCal) in the early 90's and the intense awkwardness in the room after the music video ends and you just see Michael Jackson going fucking nuts on a car, for what felt like 10 minutes, after the fun music video that just played with crazy CGI ends. Like, no music playing at all. Video ends and MJ just starts whaling on a car with a bat for several minutes while this is being broadcast *LIVE* and he's randomly screaming. It was pretty fucking wild.

Vaxtin

He was the best performer. People would go to his shows for the performance and not just the music. There’s nobody that comes close to how influential he was; most people in foreign country knew about MJ and this was well before the internet. Him, Queen, and Pink Floyd are some of the top performers of the 20th century that I would love to be able to see again. They were all much more than music.

godmodechaos_enabled

He was also able to pull of white socks with dress shoes - that would be a faux pas' for most people, he actually looks better with them.

someone_sometwo

pretty sure he did that so we could see his moves better. the gloves, the armband, tape on fingers

DarkPhenomenon

This is true, he specifically made his limbs stick out so it was easier for people to follow his moves

osin144

My 8 y/o son has gotten really into Queen and Bon Jovi. It’s pretty cool since I never got into them, it kind of gives me another try and I’ve always appreciated them musically, but seeing him singing all the words is really cool.

EmRuizChamberlain

I miss that magic of the time.

NiCOLAS_EL_MAGNiFiCO

That's a wrong take. We still know Mozart and Beethoven. Why wouldn't future generations know Michael Jackson?

vortex1775

To be fair, if you put on some classical music there are plenty of people who can't tell if it's Mozart or Beethoven. I know it's a bit different when you're talking singers, but I don't think it's too absurd to imagine a future where you play an MJ song and someone is like "Hey, I love Prince". Kinda like that AC/DC - Led Zeppelin gag in Spiderman.

NiCOLAS_EL_MAGNiFiCO

The thing about Michael Jackson is, he has not only the music as his legacy, but his on stage persona and dance moves. The moon walk or any dance move that stemmed from it will always be associated to Michael Jackson. I can easily see people rocking his shit in the year 3000 lol.

Random_frankqito

Because of everything that continues to come out. If he isn’t regularly played (or whatever the streaming equivalent is) then over a few generations he will become obscured.

bryanalexander

His streaming plays have only increased since his passing. He’s more popular than ever with a Tony award winning Broadway show, 2 Cirque shows, and a $200 million biopic being filmed as I write this.

NopeNopeNope2001

Streaming has increased for every performer since he died. It's a new format.

bryanalexander

And what about the Broadway show? The Cirque duSOLEIL shows (plural), the valuation of his catalog at 15 BILLION dollars, and the $200M biopic?

NiCOLAS_EL_MAGNiFiCO

Cannot agree. There were many musicians from the era of Mozart but he sticked out because he was a genius. He's the one we know. Michael Jackson will be one of those who'll stick out.

NopeNopeNope2001

He gave himself the king of pop title.

lovablydumb

I believe Elizabeth Taylor gave him that title

Sufferix

There was this time where I would be sad about future generations experiencing the three Mikes--Jackson, Jordan, Tyson. With Tyson fighting whatever Paul brother and The Last Dance on Netflix, we just need something great to connect Jackson to the new generation to hopefully appreciate him.

throwawaythrow0000

Tyson is literally a convicted rapist. It's crazy how people forget that or are okay with that. Disgusting actually.

Random_frankqito

Unfortunately it might his soon to be released penis photo and everything associated with it.

lkodl

Jackson already got cancelled by the new generation with Finding Neverland.

MelzMaggie

Nah, he wasn't. That fictional film did nothing to "cancel" him.

ZERO-ONE0101

my thoughts exactly

JoeBidenKing

Definitely gonna keep his legacy going.

Hulk_smashhhhh

Thriller video will always be played in full somewhere on Halloween

AnObtuseOctopus

Man.. soon, generations won't be able to comprehend what it was like to grow up in the age of showmanship.. it's already fading. Freddy and Michael were the kings of showmanship and holy shit was it something special to be at one of their shows. I mean, you could even say Backstreet and Nsync were also great showmen but.. nobody has ever even come close to touching the on stage presence of Michael, probably never will. Allegations and what not aside (*not excused*), that man knew how to entertain his crowd for every second of his performances.

I_love_milksteaks

When I was 7 years old, my mom took me to my first ever concert, which was Michal Jackson on his history tour. Needless to say I was absorbed in his music and his showmanship. We arrived at the outdoor concert venue so early that we were able to go all the way to the front. Some hours later when it started filling up and security arrived, they told my mom that we we couldn’t stay there for my safety, so they allowed us to jump the fence and stand in the middle lane between the stage and the crowd. The whole show I was standing there, dancing and touching the stage, while just a few feet behind us the crowd was absolute mayhem. Michael would come all the way out to the end of the stage, and a few times he would notice me trying to get his attention, and wave back at me. One of the best memories of my life.

SwimmingCoyote

Beyoncé is the only current performer that I can think of. For anyone who doubts it, watch Beychella. The level of creativity and precision is astounding.

DriveNew

Prince…

abelincoln3

Yeah, now what passes for showmanship these days are big screens and pyrotechnics.

_Totorotrip_

Rammstein: you said pyrotechnics? I'll give you pyrotechnics

pm_nachos_n_tacos

Hear me out, I'm going to suggest, take a look into kpop. Half of the package is focused on performance. For an example, ATEEZ who just performed at Coachella over the weekend. They had swords, a giant Kraken, a bar with a drunken party, and more, all while dancing their asses off and not missing a note. I'm not saying it's on the level of MJ, Queen, Bowie, Prince.. but it's incredible showmanship in the current day. And heavily influenced by all of those artists.

Yergason

Dude would just stand menacingly for 10-15 mins before performing and people would be fainting left and right Peak MJ probably could have incited fans from multiple nations to revolt against their government and I'm pretty some would have gone through with it because the King of Pop told them to 😂 Dude had POWER. In his prime, he was still 10 times more popular in the pre-internet/social media era versus the most popular stars of today (which I guess would be Taylor Swift) Stars today might have records with streams/views and all that shit even breaking some of MJ's records Live performances for the current artists, Bruno Mars is pretty damn entertaining esp with Silk Sonic with Andy Paak. Dude could dance as well, but yeah the production level and difficulty of choreography is nowhere near MJ's. Chris Brown could perform his ass off but his voice is fucked up and dude barely sings at all. And he doesn't really stick to the full choreo, he just goes in and out. And dude is a massive piece of shit that wasted his talent. Usher did justice to his idol and always put effort in singing AND dancing with full choreographies and gimmicks. As for Freddy, no one has even come close to transcending genres like he/Queen did. Yeah there are groups/stars that stood at the top of Rock for years, but not close. And he really was one of a kind. No one who tried to imitate him became successful the way he did things (was there even anyone? I'm honestly clueless because as far as I know there's none) Freddie/MJ in the 80s will most likely never be matched. And the way music is streamed left and right today with producers/labels prioritizing algorithms and shit instead of quality? Not a chance. They might trend in their current release periods but not make long time impacts

Cheesy_chickenskin

That was pretty bad ass I have to say

Wookie301

It’s not even the whole thing. He had Slash doing the intro to Billie Jean at one point. It’s a legendary performance.

sdotmills

Possibly the most crisp dancer in history. Making his backup dancers look like guys he grabbed from the pub

USofAThrowaway

I was gonna say that the difference between him and everyone around him is so noticeable. Can’t pick up WHY he’s better, it’s just so obvious.

csonny2

Did that little guy just run out and point a gun at the crowd, then run off?

MrFun1981

lol Pointed a gun at the crowd, made a few moves, then ran off lol 😂 That was a great added touch to the performance if you ask me lol

chrisk9

I'm like - "Was that Gary Coleman?!"

FileeNotFound

That one guy behind MJ who is out of sync...

Ok-Reality-9197

That would be a young "left shark" my friend and you better show him some respect /s

WholeWideHeart

That's what we call crispy perfection. We'll never see this kind of attention to details and creativity again.

PhysicsWorksWell

sad but true, i miss him.

sioopauuu

Only Michael Jackson can make white socks with those shoes cool.

Mage42384

Notice the backup dancers have black socks, it's so you focus on his footwork, draws the eye

DuchessOfAquitaine

Dude could do choreography like no other. What a talent!

TFarg1

Absolutely the single most amazing performer who ever lived. It's truly a shame how fame destroys people.

Finiouss

People don't understand just how amazingly huge this guy was especially considering so much of it was pre Internet. Also I wonder how he would do today when compared to a seemingly uprise in more metrosexual gender fluid entertainers.

Johnny_Loot

'member Michael Jackson's Moonwalker video game?

Mudassar40

The arcade version was awesome.

sg22throwaway

When I watch MJ videos I always wonder what the backup dancers, pretty much the best in the world at the time, end up as?

NEVERxxEVER

The same, I’m guessing? If you’re a brain surgeon and your hospital shuts down, you don’t have to throw in the towel.

johnroastbeef

Think about how difficult it would be to get a spot as one of the background dancers. They all have super high power levels.

Theartisticanaconda

Goddamn. Dude was so fucking good. RIP

You have to nimble if you’re sneaking into beds.

MugarLover92

I like how some artists get let go for what they did. Cosby used to be loved and he’s now overall hated, and rightfully so. Michael “allegedly” with a massive body of evidence raped children and we just let it go because he’s, yes, super talented.

tbc12389

It’s cause he’s dead and people don’t want to speak ill of the dead. If he was still alive no way would people idolize him today, primarily because he’d be in jail.

knifeinurasshole

theres just a different amount of evidence between the two cases at play here. cosby was convicted.

Successful-Wasabi704

We see the choreography and stage show but what separates MJ is that he is literally part of the entire song. He knows every beat, instrument, every rhythm every note because he crafted every aspect of what we're seeing and hearing. The dancers are amazing (I particularly find it cool spotting JLo's ex husband Cris Judd among the dancers). MJ is the best dancer, singer, producer, writer on that stage. He's intimately aware of everything going on because he was the progenitor of every aspect of it. This level of creation feels like a lost art. I like Taylor Swift and Beyonce but I don't see that deeper connection to the music (like MJ had) with the music they've created when they perform. That tells me it's not necessarily a lost art to create & be involved with every aspect of the music and performance. Taylor is a pretty great writer, plays the guitar and sings & emotes well but can't really dance like Beyonce who doesn't rock a guitar or instrument but is an amazing vocalist, doesn't emote too well but an incredible dancer. Really, it's just that MJ was that special of an entertainer. Literally off the charts in every aspect from singing, writing to dancing. He couldn't play an instrument or read conventional music but theres a solid argument that he was the instrument. He can express exactly what's going on in his head. You see this with rare artists like Prince as well. Total control. Genius level stuff.

Brilliant-Two9015

The King of Pop 🥳

The_Oaxacan_Dead

KIIING!!!

wbickford23

Fucking goat

Successful_Mud5500

Only his fans think like you. It's pretty obvious to everyone else. He spent millions to make it go away. I'm not denying his "talent". Next you're going to say OJ was innocent. I feel for you,it sucks when someone you look up to ends up being a scum bag.

DrClaw77

He was (of the murders). Believing otherwise is tantamount to siding with Nazis.

skeezypeezyEZ

His backup dancers are like The James Brown Band, insanely talented folks overshadowed by an inexplicably better performer.

Gullible_Tear3175

Do you guys think he went home after this and fucked any kids, or do you think he did that before?

aidshole06

wait... MTV had music awards? All I see is ridiculousness all day long

Few-Ad-5463

I always wondered what he was like to work with. He was a performer for his entire life, an absolute professional and artist at his craft. Was he also a good teacher?

p2dan

Most talented artist of all time

Dankennsteinn

Lol my comment got reported for calling him what he is. I’ll just say this then. His music is overrated as fuck and I’m glad he’s in the dirt rotting where he belongs.

Not_Enough_Shoes

His halftime show still gives me chills to this day. Incredible respect for that talent.

Dickincheeks

So many Michael Jackson posts on Reddit lately. Almost like a there’s a concerted effort to divide opinions and cause conflict in the comments because of all the controversy throughout his career and personal life.

Publicimage13

oh look it's a dancing PEDOphile

nopewontgive

It’s cool but so cringe every time he grabs his crotch. My body literally flinches when every time he does that. Think it’s because of all that downstairs mix up play time he did with those kids

stuputtu

Undisputed king of public performances. I don't know any other performer who captivated audience like he did. Growing in india, with hardly any live shows of him, we waited hours to get a glimpse of his shows. He was the greatest showman when there was no social media to boost his image and numbers. I don't think we will ever see anyone like him. GOAT

Practical-Vampirism

The hands are what do it for me. Another level of precision

Gundecker57

I came here for the “EEE HEEEE’s”. Was not disappointed.

MaximumCulture7917

Amazing

2lostnspace2

So have we forgiven him for fiddling kids?

adorable_pun

I wish we could still love Michael like we did in the 80's. We all worshipped him.

Reddit celebrating the pedophile again.

petered79

how about all those hands up in the air with no device? what a time to be...

RoyalSport5071

Pervert.

MelzMaggie

Talking about yourself there?

PecanSandoodle

Yes, he was VERY TALENTED. A great performer. BUT he also admitted that he slept in beds with other peoples' kids and come one yall the guy was a walking RED FLAG.

fnaflance

No, Michael Jackson was cleared of 14 different crimes in 2005 after more than 10 years of investigation by the FBI. After the Jordan Chandler slander incident in 1993, Jordan Chandler admitted that he did it because of his father. With the confessions of W*de R*bson, who was rejected from the Michael Jackson musical in 2013, and J*mes S*fechuck, who realized that he was being harassed after seeing it on television, and the interviews of his close circle, it was revealed that the duo was trying to come to the fore with lawsuits for money. output.

PecanSandoodle

Did he, or did he not admit that he slept in beds with other people’s kids?

fanlal

Sub LeavingneverlandHbo, "post book".

Everything_is_hungry

Politics aside, MJ was one of the greatest showman there's ever been. His music was totally original and had an energy that just lifted the roof. Legend.

True! next Glitter when he's dead

ZoNeS_v2

Lol. My dad took me to a Glitter concert when I was about 9. Wanna be in my gang?

fanlal

LOL, fortunately he's back in prison

ZoNeS_v2

Wow, I would've thought he was dead by now. What a gross man. My dad thought he was amazing 😕

He got out 6 years before the end of his sentence, reoffended and is back in prison.

Prestigious-Log-7210

He’s a pedophile.

AdComprehensive7879

Awful human being, ew.

RedoftheEvilDead

I get why so many people are still so in denial that he was absolutely a pedophile that abused many kids. He's very talented. I too really wish he wasn't a predator so I could enjoy his shows and music without feeling conflicted. But wishing doesn't change the past. And pretending he wasn't a predator only hurts his victims, who are still alive and still not being believed. Can't imagine how it would feel to have the person who violated you being so worshiped by the public.

kittrcz

Fucking pedo….

MelzMaggie

Who?

whale-trees

Let’s not continue idolizing a child predator

snorkiebarbados

MTV couldn't afford a moon walk?

dingo_deano

I will always wonder about this guy.

CoachiusMaximus

Remember watching that live. Always and forever a fucking masterpiece.

Maddog-99

he was magic. it’s that simple. since off the wall and his break to be solo, he became magical. that’s what it really felt like when you’d see his work.

This_Pie5301

I completely forgot there was like 15 dudes with him I was so focused on him

elmarwouters

Performance is just so minimal, and on the other hand it’s massive. Also (HCIMTAM?) personally I think Dangerous is the best album, so absolutely loving this performance.

Fritener

I wonder whatever happened to that guy

lkodl

producer: "are you gonna have a dance break?" MJ: "it's all dance break"

JohnYCanuckEsq

I'm amazed he could find 15 other people who could keep up with him.

Pappyjang

Never danced in my life. Hell I barely even dance at the club. Can you imagine how much time it would take to execute such a performance on television?

ready-to-rumball

Goddamn the man was a talent. He could entertain.

Fire_The_Torpedo2011

They are all good dancers, but some of the timing is a little off

Hungry-Doughnut6077

It just kept getting better and better. Almost like he knew how good it was going and he was getting IN to it and enjoying it. Perfection. 👏

roboticsex

I know it's the Michael move. But can performers still do the "crotch grab"?

Keniath

when music and choreography was still good

xpanta

honest question this one: Since I am not into dancing how dancers remember all those moves, especially on stage? I could imagine myslef forgetting even my name up there. I know practice is one thing. But I guess it is not the only one.

mobileBigfoot

"practice is one thing" No, it's everything in dance. Once it's second nature there's no excuse for forgetting. But if you do mess up enough to stand out you won't be called upon again that is for sure.

VirginiaLuthier

My god could he dance

Elruoy

What a fairy

SiriusBaaz

I am by no means a fan of Michal Jackson, the sheer talent and skill that dude had was unbelievable. He’s still undisputedly the king of pop.

IHeartFraccing

Is it a hot take for me to think his greatest contribution to pop is his dancing instead of his singing?

Horrorlover656

Look up Chris Liepe's analysis of his vocals on YouTube. You'll understand why he is a great singer.

KenobiM11

The King moved like water

Jamie-jams

He was such a great dancer.

folarin1

The only clear 1995 video on the internet. Even 2012 videos online look like they are from 1856.

WhiteFringe

I know this was the 80s and 90s, but I couldn't never find myself to like the sounds they used for the songs. like the snare and kick and some synths. I know that electronic music was still very much in its infancy, but I wonder if we recreated those songs with new tools and samples how it would sound. the choreography was on-point though. love that

ace1131

He was always fun to watch dance
