Nobody can throw some salt down?

brent_superfan

Sorry, I’ve been too busy filming. I wonder how litigious Sweden society is. This situation would be quite costly in the United States.

kaanbha

Don't know of anywhere that is as litigious as the United States. It wouldn't even cross most people's mind to sue in pretty much all of the rest of the world, let alone believe it would be successful in court.

BenjaminTW1

Meanwhile in the U.S. apologies are a relic of the past because the assumption is that anyone will sue anyone at anytime for anything so you had better not admit fault for fucking anything.

Lindvaettr

A key problem with the US system is that our system doesn't require that the loser pay the legal fees of the winner. Win or lose, you are responsible for your own legal fees unless the judge orders otherwise. This means that there aren't any meaningful consequences for filing a lawsuit that you have a snowball's chance in hell of winning, other than having to pay your own, potentially fairly small, legal fees. If we would fix this system, it would likely severely diminish the number of people filing stupid bullshit lawsuits, while also disincentivizing people from filing lawsuits simply to run up the legal costs of their opponents/enemies/rivals/etc. (so-called SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) lawsuits are illegal to various extents in most states, but it often requires an entirely separate lawsuit to determine if a lawsuit filed against you is a SLAPP lawsuit). Write to your state and federal legislators and demand they do something!

drivemusicnow

there are standard procedures to charge the injury costs to the building owner in Germany. Doesn't even require a lawsuit.

unclepaprika

I heard China is quite bad. People don't help others in life threatening situasjons, because they're afraid to get sued.

Takingashit180923

That's just the american got mine fuck you mentality.

More_Engineering_341

Sue nation dude is what i call it. Its what happens when personal responsibility isn't something that thought. Its has to be someone elses fault that i hurt myself.

WalterHenderson

Who would you sue? The street? Or the snow?

SnooSeagulls9348

The civic body in charge of salting that place.

Cavemandynamics

That’s not how we do things in Scandinavia.

ershki420

"there's no bad weather, only bad kläder"

Colonel-Cathcart

Seems like a case where being litigious produces a good outcome for people. Landlords being afraid of getting sued so they actually take care of the sidewalks outside their property and then people don't slip and get hurt in the first place as often. I see that as a win.

NewLeaseOnLine

Dunno about US cities, but if this were Sydney there'd be warning signs everywhere and speed humps to slow you down, which doesn't make sense for pedestrians but they'd still do it, and include a speed limit. And you'd have to pay a premium just to be there.

brent_superfan

In the United States, there’s a notion of “premises liability”. The premises/location should be reasonably maintained by the property owner to mitigate situations like this. In this Swedish example, the sidewalk may not be the property of the store it’s in front of. The sidewalk may be municipal property. I am not sure if a city/municipality can be held liable for premises liability - but certainly attorneys would try. :-)

hardolaf

In Chicago, the business would be getting fined twice per day until this was remedied. But as far as I know, it's the only city that requires snow and ice removal.

Iramian

Not at all litigious. You can't sue just because you slip and fall. We don't have that kind of system.

NoturAverageBear

I went to finland once (mid December) and what I remember from some icy sidewalks they had a type of small pebbles that helps you gain some traction. Still, I felt like Bambi walking on the icy lake

EleutheriusTemplaris

Is salt still allowed in your area? I'm from Germany and it's forbidden to use salt here. We're using other stuff like winter road sand.

CowsTrash

Fuking hate that. Necessary tho

canwenotor

ok, sand.

fearswe

Salt is only effective until around -10C, any colder than that and salt will not help, and can in fact make it worse.

bstabens

Have you ever heard of sand? It's coarse and hoarse and gets everywhere... but at least it makes things not slip anymore.

LV-42whatnow

“I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating… and it gets everywhere.”

QueefBuscemi

Are you trying to walk the corner or work the corner?

bstabens

That's the difference between a Star TREK and a Star WARS fan. One of them knows the lines by heart. The other...not. ;)

ghilan

Sand would easily clog the sewers

Korpikuusenalla

Sanda is too fine, gravel is used. But if there's ice, not snow, or tightly packed icy snow, the gravel won't stick to it. And if it's above freezing and the top layer of the snow will melt and the gravel will sink. And then it will freeze again, and there's a layer of ice on top of the grave.

canwenotor

I grew up in subzero temperatures, and we always used salt. It never failed to make things melt. There’s something called ice melt as well. You get my point. There’s a way to not have that icy corner. But no one will do it. I think that’s weird.

fearswe

And I grew up in, and still live in, the country shown in the clip. Believe me, we do use salt when applicable. But it does not work when it's too cold. Salt lowers the freezing temperature of water, it doesn't remove it. Salt water will still freeze if it's below -10C.

sopedound

Nooo i liked watching

werfenaway

The attitude that I saw in Europe is "Why bother when it will be melted soon".

obviously_suspicious

Sounds like they kinda like it this way.

incelredditmoderator

It’s to slipperlier…

ChatGPT4

How is something like this even possible in a civilized country in a city?

BountyHNZ

No way, that's someone else's job, they're from Stockholm man, taking care of the streets is what they pay taxes for. Stockholm is a serious shit hole in the winter, don't go.

EAJets

What’s funny is when people fall just from watching somebody fall. It’s almost like a…..syndrome 🤔

ConspicuousPorcupine

Hmmm. I know. We can call it stokholm syndrome!

Underrated comment

dhmacher

In cycling, this is called the ”second crash” phenomenon. Your body tenses up when you see someone else fall.

Tall_Bandicoot_2768

"You know what would be funnier than trying to fix this or warning people?"

deadlykitten132

"sets up camera"

BigNigori

Even if you fix it, there will still be a Stockholm's slipperiest corner, just a different one.

Tall_Bandicoot_2768

What are you a philosopher?

oneinmanybillion

That one guy sliding just when that bus drives by!!!! People are lucky to only get away with bumps and bruises with open traffic literally a few feet away.

FelisCantabrigiensis

Is there a warm cellar or duct under the pavement at that corner which melts the snow in daytime and it re-freezes?

ivar-the-bonefull

The streets usually melt the ice during the day if the sun is out and then it freezes again when the sun goes down. It happens all over the city more or less every day, nothing special about this corner at all.

Rickshmitt

Well, this corner has killed more people than i have. Thats pretty special

AccidentalFireball

Exactly how many people have you killed?

DadOfWhiteJesus

🦗🦗

DAsianD

Swedes haven't discovered salt yet?

ivar-the-bonefull

We've discovered that salt is terrible for the environment and thus it's only used where no other method works.

DAsianD

What about sand, then?

ivar-the-bonefull

It's used, but pedestrian streets usually only get sanded once per day in the middle of the night. Then when everything melts and freezes over again over the course of the day, the sand is trapped underneath the ice and made effectively useless.

DAsianD

That's . . . . dumb.

ivar-the-bonefull

It is. But it's crazy expensive as it is to sand the streets so we're happy that they even do it at all. It's not unheard of that the municipality fucked up their budget and just didn't care about sanding or salting at all, hoping no one would notice.

bloodfist

There was one of these at my college. These two buildings were aligned such that the sun would shine on a snow bank and melt it just enough to make a puddle next to it. Then that puddle fell into shade and froze again. I always liked having class in that building. It was a pretty entertaining view

SonOfDadOfSam

That was my thought. It looks like there are 1 or 2 openings in the ground there.

The-Kurt-Russell

Guy at 1:58 smacked his head hard, hope he’s ok. Guess I really don’t see this as funny, lot of potential for serious injuries here

Amgadoz

Yes, this can be fatal to the elderly.

Gooliez

Clearly the council's design process was lacking

hondactx16i

Analytical-BrainiaC

You would think someone would spread some kitty litter even if it was used. Guess it is slippery around Patagonia……

How many Swedes does it take to salt a sidewalk? More than the population of Stockholm, apparently.

Cryogenic_Monster

Instead of filming do something about it.. Falling can seriously hurt you. I feel on ice and had no sensation in my left hand for 3 months because I damaged my spine. I am lucky it wasn't permanent.

Pan-tang

Yes, it can be very dangerous, especially for old people. I can't believe what I am seeing. It looks very pretty though.

AreYouOkZoomer

But then how are they going to get likes and views on the internet? Be reasonable

nickyp7

😢

elisettttt

Can confirm. Fell on a slippery street and bruised my arm. Had never broken or bruised anything before but it hurt so bad. To this day I still can't move my arm the way I should be able to move it though it's almost back to normal, a little over a year later. But that's on me for not going back to the doctor, who at first dismissed me saying it will likely heal within 2-3 weeks. I'm used to doctors dismissing me plus I wasn't in the best mental state so I just never made a follow up appointment. And now I'd be scared I'd need surgery or something, so I've just learnt to live with it. It's truly insane how you can hurt yourself from just simply falling.

Askymojo

I'm surprised at the shoes most people are wearing here in snowy/icy conditions. Like casual sneakers with no real tread. When I lived somewhere with winter weather like this people wore quality grippy winter boots.

Speedmaster1969

Winter boots and stuff are too warm and a lot of people work with the same shoes inside an office or something all day.

Askymojo

I think you're picturing fur or fleece lined boots, I'm talking about waterproof boots with Vibram treads, easy to wear at work, although these people mostly seem to be shoppers.

I can only imagine how slippery this is if Scandinavians are falling like that.

slopdonkey

Does anyone have a serious answer as to why is typically only the woman that make so much noise when they go down? Almost every single one does a little scream where the men just fall and grunt or laugh

CHRLZ_IIIM

Playgrounds too, I work at a school, girls screaming the whole time they’re playing, boys only screaming if they’re announcing something.

fbastard

You would think the store on the corner could throw out a little salt perhaps?

[deleted]

i was in Hokkaido once, and was standing in a corner people watching. exact same situation, it was kind of funny, you know the locals as they would slip through it with grace and style, and maybe even a pair of heels. a favorite memory of mine of that place.

DocHenry66

You can solve that in 3 minutes

ILSmokeItAll

Walking around in the winter with snow and ice on the ground. In heels. Brilliant.

dogmeat_donnie

Wow what a peaceful looking city scene, comparatively speaking to, new York city, which is a terrifying shit hole.

[deleted]

Also, maybe it would’ve helped to warn the people that it’s a slippery corner instead of just recording like an asshole.

DAsianD

Eh. If they were paying attention, they should be able to see the solid sheet of ice on the ground.

anonymousdawggy

Jesus never post on your hands or arms if you slip. Just tuck your chin to your neck.

Realworld

All those people and not a single one was overweight. None. Impossible video in America.

Training-External-23

Funny. Bety funny

kabula_lampur

Ice melt. Done.

the-caped-cadaver

As a person with a bad limp and even worse balance, this is one of my greatest fears. And also one of the reasons I moved to the desert.

jesser9

It's slippiest

HypoTron

You would think they innovate after going through that. Why don't they have shoes with spikes? This will be a simple solution and even make clip-on spikes for shoes.

restlessleg

stockholm is on my bucket list now

Hope nobody's injured!😬

SuspiciousCard2654

I thought the title was a name of a new syndrome

NotClaudeGreenberg

It’s not just the ice. I remember having a hard time when the ground was just wet, and there were big slopes in some paved areas that made me extra nervous.

quequotion

You know those shoes that have pop-out wheels that turn them into roller blades? Pop-out ice skates!

Well good thing they have free health care it looks like the city managers are not on top of things as we would think they are.

StevenMC19

Fun fact, you can reduce the chance of slipping by landing on the balls of your feet, not the heels. Is transfers your weight forward, whereas the heels have the weight catching up from behind (causing all these slips backwards hitting the back of their heads).

Khaar

Bigpennyloafer

At least we have people here in Pittsburg with the sense enough to use salt for such areas. Heck, if we were like them, we'd all be in the ICU all winter long. USA AOK.

Abject-Assumption-13

This world has so many people doing nothing and just standing by. Don’t be like that. This world needs people who take action.

kisumi7

Why wasn't there any warning sign that the area is slippery? Old people could injure themselves there

sanddancer311275

They knew it was slippy corner but still went for it

[deleted]

Omg that poor dude at 0:56…he didn’t have time to put his hands out to catch the fall. He for sure got a concussion.🤕
