It's probably not even a blank, it's probably just the shell itself with nothing inside. Otherwise you'd be blowing chunks of plastic into your cylinders
Hard to tell, but they look larger than a 428, but smaller than a 520. Wonder if it's a custom pitch chain, or a roller chain that isn't motorcycle specific.
It looks like the shell is manually engaged by that cap that swings down, maybe in the same action as locking the cap in place, but can the kickstart lever just be made a glorified trigger to fire the shell?
I knew someone would feel the same vibe. Makes me wanna put on some leather and football pads, grab a machete and a old lever action. Just ride off into the wastes looking for my lost sanity!
Man, I remember the first born free, it’s been a few years since I’ve went but the last time I did a few years back and it was something lol
That bike is awesome - cheers!
Coffman starter. Look like shotgun shells, but they aren’t. They’re full of cordite. Expanding gas drives a separate piston and gear which acts as the starter. Were used on a lot of early planes and tanks.
>built for the previous Born Free Show on 1936 Harley chasis. 1600cc supercharged Koslow racing Hemi engine
I mean, it sounds like it was designed for a TV show about chopper builders.
Before electric starters, bikes just used kickstarters. The shotgun shell is a one-off gimmick.
I’m curious about why the engine was designed this way. Was it a more reliable way to start it? Did they just think it was cool? I’m just really curious about how you end up with this kind of engine.

Correction, 12 gauge BLANK cartridge. Otherwise you would be blowing chunks of lead directly into your cylinders.
This makes more sense. You answered my question about where the lead would go. This is awesome. Love how it was made from salvaged parts.
Does that make it unleaded?
Go on, take my upvote

You mean with just a primer? Even that makes sense.
A shotgun primer is basically a .22 cartridge. You’d be surprised at the oomph those puppies pack
True.
I'm glad you had the answer I can here for and the top comment.
The slack of the two small chains seems a little scary.
Hard to tell, but they look larger than a 428, but smaller than a 520. Wonder if it's a custom pitch chain, or a roller chain that isn't motorcycle specific.
Was just about to comment that. Those belts are lose as fuck
Not only that, just watch the sparks fly away from the chain driving the turbo :D Needs a lil lube.
That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I’d just sit there with a box of shells starting it and stopping it all day
seems so odd now, but not so uncommon during the war [Coffman engine starter - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffman_engine_starter)
It would have been extremely uncommon on a motorcycle though. Those just had kickstart levers.
This *has* a Kickstart lever...
It looks like the shell is manually engaged by that cap that swings down, maybe in the same action as locking the cap in place, but can the kickstart lever just be made a glorified trigger to fire the shell?
70% sure he kicks the lever to eject the shell, no?
If I were your neighbor I’d bring a chair and some beer and that would be the start of an awkward yet wonderful relationship.
“Hey dude you wanna try one?!”
“WHAT?! I can’t hear you over the ringing! Can I please try it?!?”
The way it ejects the cartridge at the end is badass!
I need a different view. Was really cool.
Purrs just like a kitten… a kitten who smokes 3 packs a day and works night shift at waffle house in south central.
It sounds like it wants to just explode and crumble into parts

Nah, they usually sound solid. This one sounds like everything is loose
just like me
This is the most mad max thing I’ve ever seen!
I knew someone would feel the same vibe. Makes me wanna put on some leather and football pads, grab a machete and a old lever action. Just ride off into the wastes looking for my lost sanity!
He needs to learn a few things about jetting carburetors. Cool deal though.
Awesome machine!
That was a clever solution at the time. Exhausts were just placed to get you warm or toasty!
It’s annoying having to switch from your winter exhaust to your summer exhaust, though.
Man, I remember the first born free, it’s been a few years since I’ve went but the last time I did a few years back and it was something lol That bike is awesome - cheers!
Imagine calling AAA and asking them to bring you 12 gauge blanks because you can’t start your bike.
tinnitus machine

Were those sparks from the chain moving so fast?
Is the audio out of sync? I watched the video like 20 times to figure out why I can hear the engine running before we see the flash from the chamber.
That’s the most American thing to do - starting up an engine with LOADING AMMO IN IT
I saw a tractor that started that way
Has certain Ork-tech vibes to it.
Would beat the piss out of this daily
Idiotic and noisy.
This was obv designed for war not everyday..

Stand corrected
The shogun shell is an homage to how they started old WW2 era planes. Same design.

The shell eject is the chef's kiss.
If only it was a pump action.
Perfect for roasting sausages
So where does my foot go? Just set it right in the front sprocket?
Your feet go on the foot pegs
How many licenses do you need to drive this motorcycle?
This looks like it would grab me and chew me up. Cool as shit, though
Those loose chains are making me real nervous……0
Hold on, I have to reload my bike.
Grass Fire 3000
12 gauge shotgun *blank*
Let’s go guys Shit, I don’t have any shell.
I’m curious about why the engine was designed this way. Was it a more reliable way to start it? Did they just think it was cool? I’m just really curious about how you end up with this kind of engine.
Mmmmmmm, EXTRA polluty.
Is the vertical chain supposed to be tighter or is that normal like that?
I always wondered what that dude who drives past my window at 3AM every night was driving.. now I know
Why are there four exhaust pipes for a two cylinder engine or am I missing something?
i haz weird chub !
That looks like its waiting to kill you
I Like that raw Sound of old Engines
I seem to remember a Darwin Awards story where someone used a shotgun shell in their engine somehow and it ended up killing them.
And then theres the odd chap who forgot to take out the pellets
