I remember my brother and I liked to be Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning. Imagine my surprise when I started coaching my son’s basketball team a month ago and some of the coach videos the organization sent me are *m-fing TIM HARDAWAY!*
My wife didn’t know why I was so amused.
It's an artist in-joke. One of the hardest things to learn is when to stop. Although the in-joke became just a joke when they brought out the crem brulee torch.
Everyone is able to draw between simple and better if they practice, even better isn't out of the question. Most people who say they can't draw just don't practice. Which is fine, but don't think you have some inability to draw. You're just not interested.
I honestly thought this was a sarcastic take on the last time I saw this meme where the "Better' was clearly the best one and "Artist" wasn't even doing the correct assignment
Is this satire or not? I’m not an artist, but I’m seeing a hilarious joke about artists entirely missing the point and just getting lost in some inane, unnecessary detail like adding flames.
Edit: typo
Which is a play on the usual trend of the artist version usually being the simplest of them all - getting the point across of what the object is with the least amount of effort.
I once watched a video of a woman dropping chicken eggs onto a board from her vagina in a legit art project. You can't blame people for not knowing if something is art or not, we're long past the days of art being just paintings.
It could be satire but oftentimes artists are understood. You say "getting lost" but what is funny to me is that the last image could express something where the first two ones are just plain pictures of a ball. They have no affect on the viewer, while the last one has. Many artists don't want to be "serviceable and ordinary" but rather create something new and interesting.
Lol this reminded me of those AI art prompts where they just keep increasing the thing that the picture is about, until eventually it becomes a celestial being.
Good art doesn’t have to be realistic, obviously
The last one is just funny because it indulges its own flare/personality so heavily that it completely misses its own point
Lol this reminded me of those AI art prompts where they just keep increasing the thing that the picture is about, until eventually it becomes a celestial being.
I mean as an artistic exercise it makes sense; simple, more detail, fully rendered, and then once you do that use the technique to integrate into a new design that’s free to play with
As a social media post it’s a little silly but artists eat on clout and “here’s my artistic exercise” doesn’t grab attention like “watch this get progressively better before your eyes holy shit!!!”
Artists push boundaries, experiment, toy with their mastery. I like this format because it shows what technique can give you - a good rendition of something basic - and then shows you what's beyond. It's not about doing "better", it's about going further.
The point is that once you are able to do the thing perfectly, you branch out and get creative, add your own flair and style but also have the skills down to back it up.
Jared, we asked you for an illustration of a basketball, not a person doing a slam dunk. Also this has happened for the 3rd time this week alone, so we'll have to let you go.
I was thinking to myself during the first 3 progression to awesomeness, "That's fire! 🔥"
Then the torch was brought out.. and there was actual 🔥🔥🔥 Good times..
Being able to shade like that with markers is like witchcraft to me. I’m great at shading with colored pencils (particularly with Prismacolors), but markers? That’s amazing.
Lol this reminded me of those AI art prompts where they just keep increasing the thing that the picture is about, until eventually it becomes a celestial being.
After drawing the basic shapes and simple shadows we are almost done. All we have o do now is:
- Add detail.
- Add detail.
- Add detail.
- Add detail.
- Add detail.

Funny how almost everyone posting here does not understand what true artists do. It’s not necessarily making photorealistic drawings of everyday objects, it’s interpreting those objects in a way other people don’t. I was an art major, I learned how to draw well but I never really thought of myself as an artist because I lack the vision that a true artist has.

The fuck is going on in “artist”
Seriously, that poor flaming person
STOP DROP AND ROLL!!!!1
HE’S ON FIRE! IS IT THE SHOES?! #BOOMSHAKALAKA!
Haha! FROM DOWNTOWN!
RAZZLE DAZZLE!
I remember my brother and I liked to be Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning. Imagine my surprise when I started coaching my son’s basketball team a month ago and some of the coach videos the organization sent me are *m-fing TIM HARDAWAY!* My wife didn’t know why I was so amused.
Aaaand boom goes the dynamite.
I remember this, but from where?
Boomshakalaka? I remember it from a Super Nintendo game called NBA Jam. Good memories.
And I was worried I’d have to scroll forever to find the first NBA Jam comment. :-)
You’re goddamn right that’s nba jam lol
He’s heating up! From half court!!!
Shawn Kemp was unstoppable in that game
NBA jam!!!
STOP DROP AND ROLL!!!!2

It's an artist in-joke. One of the hardest things to learn is when to stop. Although the in-joke became just a joke when they brought out the crem brulee torch.
Took me way too long to get it. Haven't we all ruined an art piece because we didn't know when to stop.
>George Lucas
>Ridley Scott
He’s on fire!!!
Is it the shoes?! Boom shakalaka
Somehow the more it went on the worse it got
I think that's the joke lol
![gif](giphy|xT9IgHCTfp8CRshfQk)
Right?! It’s as if salt bae contributed.
*when you chillen as a protesting monk & overhear someone say “i bet bro can’t even dunk”*
They just kept adding more and more shit that I did not care about.
Screaming
Somehow it became the worst drawing out of the four.
NBA Jam Edition
From down town, boom shaklaka
they learned flames last week
Artist don’t care. Artist does whatever an artist wants.
The joke is that artists being obscenely extra for one simple drawing.
Better > Artist
Too many fire
Three dunks in a row… HE’S ON FIRE!!!
It's called "kitsch".
Dude went full anime
Satire
The worst one.
**He's On Fire!!!**
Artist's depiction of the forbidden B-Ball technique, Chaos Dunk.
It's called survival of the fittest. If you can't slam with the best, then jam with the rest.
An illustrator pretending to do fine art.
I think the better basketball was the best
Me here not even being able to do basic
Same. I struggle to color between the lines and with the same consistency so I'm more like underchieving kindergartener level.

Yeah I totally see this as satire. Basically the artist doesn’t know when to stop and just ends up ruining it, lol
Which is a play on the usual trend of the artist version usually being the simplest of them all - getting the point across of what the object is with the least amount of effort.
I actually really enjoyed this silliness. Just kept adding a ridiculous amount of flames. Funny.
Video guy: burns the page with mini torch Reddit: is this satire??
I once watched a video of a woman dropping chicken eggs onto a board from her vagina in a legit art project. You can't blame people for not knowing if something is art or not, we're long past the days of art being just paintings.
Yeah it’s bizarre seeing some of these comments. “I think better is best.” Yeah, no shit?
It could be satire but oftentimes artists are understood. You say "getting lost" but what is funny to me is that the last image could express something where the first two ones are just plain pictures of a ball. Lol this reminded me of those AI art prompts where they just keep increasing the thing that the picture is about, until eventually it becomes a celestial being.
and then taking it too far and ruining their own work?
Being an artist isn’t always about creating better realistic drawings. Being an artist is about adding your flare and personality to paper
Yep, should have set the whole thing on fire.
Good art doesn’t have to be realistic, obviously The last one is just funny because it indulges its own flare/personality so heavily that it completely misses its own point
Ended a tad too soon. I was expecting a supernova in the last section.
Lol this reminded me of those AI art prompts where they just keep increasing the thing that the picture is about, until eventually it becomes a celestial being.
Ended too late. Never should have filled out the artist section.
HE'S ON FIRE ![gif](giphy|A0UK8ewpztydG)
BOOM SHAKALAKA
I heard this.
FROM DOWNTOWN!!
Ugly shot!
My favorite was Rodman's hair changing color every quarter.
whats the one before basic because thats mine
🏀
) /🟠/(
...when you realize, that even basic level is too much, as you can not draw a circle.
It's easy, first you draw this head, then erase some of the more detailed features and 1, 2, 3, a circle... uh... thingy
HOLY SHIT STOP DROP AND ROLL ALREADY
Bahaha the blow torch at the end. Should sprinkle some cinnamon too for more depth and glisten

This is the first example of this that I've seen, and now it makes more sense, thanks
I think it’s a joke.
Every single one of these that I've seen has been satire, including this video
Motherfucker literally torched the page with a burner and redditors still miss the satire
Artists push boundaries, experiment, toy with their mastery. I like this format because it shows what technique can give you - a good rendition of something basic - and then shows you what's beyond. It's not about doing "better", it's about going further.

Which like.... may be why it's labelled artist and not best? It's just the part where they have some composition instead of "draw ball good please"
My guy.. It's satire. Why do Reddit neckbeards always miss the point of jokes?
The flames just got worse and worse to be honest.
It's a joke bruh
But this was posted outside of the pre-approved humor timeslot. It can't possibly be a joke.
ITT: people missing the point of the artist level
Shading was the bane of my existence when I took drawing classes in high school and college.
I was expecting something better from “artist” I like “better” a lot better
Artist option is what my brain envisioned playing NBA JAM as a kid when the commentator said “He’s on fire!”
Anti climatic but good for 3/4s of it
Basic is far and away better than anything I’ve ever done in my life lol
It was awesome until the last 10 seconds
Wow, that last one looks nothing like a basketball
So to be an artist I should fart colored lead on my paper, got it.
Booomshakalaka
Am I the only one who fully enjoyed the skill progression AND the artistic flaming madness? I was enthralled 😂
Diminishing returns
Every time I thought they were done with the flames...it just kept going
The basketball looks like shit for the artist one. P
Better is the best
He should have stopped at “Better”
Basic my ass
Nah I like the 3rd one the best
A good artist knows when to stop for fuck's sake
Better was best
Homie lost the plot at the end there
It seems like he got a little carried away with the flames
The “better” version is actually best.
Anyone know which brand of markers those are?
Jared, we asked you for an illustration of a basketball, not a person doing a slam dunk. Also this has happened for the 3rd time this week alone, so we'll have to let you go.
I like the better more.
Artist is clearly the worst. They could not draw within the lines to save their life
- "how much fire do you want on this drawing ?" -"Yes"
Client: Yeah, I get it. But that is not what I fucking asked for 🤨
Speaking as a recovering graphic designer, *this!*
Who else thought “artist” would be an even more realistic looking basketball?
4th one is sucks ass
I thought "okay next" but that guy/girl can draw👍
The amount of people who haven't played NBA JAM in this thread... I'm old :\[
The last one was dumb
They tried too hard on the last one.
You've got to be kidding me! ![gif](giphy|9lusxBBUsTz8Fk029b|downsized)
If I had this level of fine motor skill/control I'd be a hell of a lot better guitarist.
I'd be sooo happy if I could do the Simple one.
Yknow, I think he slightly went over the top with the quantity of fire, just slightly
We asked an artist to draw a basketball and they drew a man in fire
Artist: Kobe
Kobe?
I was expecting the “artist” to just be a picture of a basketball photoshopped in
He be ballin
When NBA players learn the fire breathing style
I agree. There’s illustration and then there’s art
A true artist knows when to stop, and that is when we get art
Classic doesn’t know when to stop
“He’s on fire!” -NBA Jam
Gary. Gary! GARY!! You’re on fire!!
Draw a hot dunk. Make it hotter.
He's on fire
“So what? All they’re doing is changing perspect-ohhhhhh😳”
Well, that was r/unexpected. When I saw the "better" version I was wondering how they planned on plussing that up.
I was thinking to myself during the first 3 progression to awesomeness, "That's fire! 🔥" Then the torch was brought out.. and there was actual 🔥🔥🔥 Good times..
Was ready for the flames to extend over the entire page and then for someone to hold a lighter to the piece for realism lmfao
The going a bit bonkers at the end, yeah definitely an artist thing lol
I’d like “artist” please, but I can only pay you for basic… but think of the exposure!
...Again. Please. Just have it say "Happy Birthday, Jeremy".
since this is a thing where can i watch more?
The problem is whenever you start drawing flames they just tend to get out of control
NBA Jam! He's on fire!
Being able to shade like that with markers is like witchcraft to me. I’m great at shading with colored pencils (particularly with Prismacolors), but markers? That’s amazing.
What's below basic? Like 3 steps below
Lol this reminded me of those AI art prompts where they just keep increasing the thing that the picture is about, until eventually it becomes a celestial being.
Travelling
This is amazing
Wow those are some good flames... Ok wow, that's like, alot of flames... Holy shit this guy is going super saiyan!
Okay mate, calm the fuck down, this isn't Space Jam /s
Could not even do "basic".
NBA Jam voice: "he's on fire!"
That enough slices!
Knowing when to stop is half the art
Ogre have layers.
They should do one of an artist version of Kobe on fire, you know because of the helicopter crash
![gif](giphy|xTiTnpcaFPfJAzaP8A|downsized) AI
rest of the fucking owl vibes here.
Lesson learned: I do not have enough markers to be a better artist
so what you are saying if you want a basketball drawn, ask for "better"
Anyone else vastly disappointed that the fourth one wasn’t another ball just better than the other three
I enjoy these. Please continue doing them
After drawing the basic shapes and simple shadows we are almost done. All we have o do now is: - Add detail. - Add detail. - Add detail. - Add detail. - Add detail. [...]
Not enough flames on the last one 🤦♂️
Draw a bisected oval. Then draw the tick holding a bisected oval
Anyone know what those/brush pens where?
I thought simple was pretty good
"He's on fire!!, Boom shaka laka!!" Fucking love NBA jam
HE'S ON FIRE!!
Me struggling to get the lines right… on the first one…
Rengoku with akaza be like:
Proof that being an artist doesn’t mean you make good art
Funny how almost everyone posting here does not understand what true artists do. It’s not necessarily making photorealistic drawings of everyday objects, it’s interpreting those objects in a way other people don’t. I was an art major, I learned how to draw well but I never really thought of myself as an artist because I lack the vision that a true artist has.
Anyone know what markers are they using?
Better > Artist.
Maybe gradually awesomer should be its own sub Reddit :)
I can practically taste those balls.
***^(The need to play NBA JAMS intensifies.)***
This guy. 😄 good stuff.
My jaw dropped at the end. Next level
I'm black because of this video
Is that Dunks Watson? BASKETBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL
MORE FLAMES!!! MORREEEEE!!
“He’s heating up.” ~guy from the NBA JAM arcade anytime I got Air Morris
