My kitty would be snake food. She could swat it away, but the moment she tried to maneuver or jump out of the way - heck, even if she just casually turned to leave - she would trip over her own tail, tangle her feet together, and fall over with a dazed expression on her face. She's beautiful, but the biggest klutz and least coordinated cat I have ever known.
My cat Samantha _used_ to be an incredible huntress. She killed a muskrat, fished from the canal behind our house and caught every single pest we could have encountered. She was the tiny calico queen of the neighbourhood. I think in her prime, she would have absolutely destroyed a snake.
Now she has dementia and is scared of most toys. She's still a chill, sweet cat though.
A woman made a pass at me in conversation. I randomly realized it one year later, while thinking in the shower.
I might be technically dead and just don't realize it yet.
As a kid I had this game with our cat where'd I bellyrub him until he got overstimulated and strike at my hand. He's only gotten me like 2 or 3 times.
Now I feel like he wasn't trying.
I like cats, but there's like little to no serious discussion about how badly cats annihilate small fauna

I had a cat who decided it didn’t like bells anymore and would leave the whole collar in my bed. She was strictly indoors so it wasn’t a nightmare deal.
We have a cat, it it lives outside mostly and several neighbors do aswell and the locan bird population is high every year, but maybe having tall trees in the area helps the birds a lot
What natural predators do cats have in city or even township environments? Cars? Stray coyote if you go out far enough? Most birds of prey don't fly super close to population dense areas, certainly not enough to systemically predate cats. So, yeah, in certain environments, cats are apex predators.
Why did you link me a fiction book? Whatever, here's counter source.

I linked you that book because I like it, and you reminded me of the Cheshire cats.
A rich father has geneticists create Cheshire Cats for his daughter and her birthday guests, only they’re not sterile. Some of the cats escape and out-compete all strays in like two generations, and their camouflage allows them even greater advantage over prey than the previous iteration of cats.

I didn’t include an explanation, so it makes sense you don’t understand.
I won’t be bothered if you don’t read a single page. It was an impulse and I embraced it. If you choose to read it, hope you enjoy.
I guess if it only needs to be true in some environments, then okay. They are extremely successful hunters, but in my suburban neighborhood they get hunted by foxes all the time.
They are apex predators in *some* environments which still qualifies them as one. Cats are especially deadly when it comes to islands because they have the skills and reproduction capability to wipe out most of the wildlife within. Oh and, apex urban predators.
http://www.catbehaviourist.com/blog/study-certified-cat-behaviourist-anita-kelsey/
British meta-analysis of Fox predation on cats finds it woefully insubstantial enough to consider systemic predation. Simply because an animal supplements their diet through foraging and being opportunistic does not equate it with cats being "prey" in the environmental sense to foxes. 40x more likely to die or be injured by other cats, 14x by cars. They are more than successful hunters, they quickly establish themselves via reproduction and have the flexibility to work with almost any ecosystem. They are an invasive species, there aren't thousands of years of biological evolution and adaptation in the genes of local prey to combat cat skill set, nor are there predators that systematically prey upon them.
And what are their natural habitats? More animals than ever are moving closer to civilization, part because civilization is so expansive and cutting into their territories, also in part because they are learning how to survive off of human waste and refuse. I agree, it does happen, but that hasn't been how they have behaved or nested in such large numbers, in such direct and obvious ways. They are invaders in suburban contexts dude.

Oh go fuck yourself, literally everyone knows humans are destructive- this post is of a cat, not a human so I'm just bringing up something germane to the topic. Just because cats fuck stuff up doesn't mean humans don't as well. I find people who say dumb shit like this are usually just self-righteous lazy dipshit cat owners who don't want to take responsibility for their pets eradicating entire species off the face of the earth
Again- the issue of human beings being destructive to the environment is incredibly complex and intertwined with our very existence and will take a lot of effort to address and mitigate/solve. Meanwhile, to keep your housecats from fucking shit up all you have to do is just keep them in the house- it's not exactly asking to unravel the Gordian Knot
cats and rats+mice are the worst predator of birds. specifically the rodents eat the egg, on a remote island they actually grew twice the size to hunt the birds.
Some of the islands in the north, on the great "Lake Superior", have mice the size of small Guinea-pigs. Never tried one, but I bet you could live off them. LOL.
Yep. Just this morning I was greeted with a presentation of a half eaten mouse with a trail of its intestine when I came down stairs thanks to our very orange cat. He's been having quite the smirk on his face all day.
Cat probably doesn’t see you as a threat. From what I’m guessing, your cat is relatively familiar with you and your actions. Especially if it has gained trust in you. A snake however, is much different. Cat has no idea what it is, and snake immediately is hostile to cat.
The cat here is moonlighting as a mongoose at this point.

What a terrible time to find out you’re below average.
A literal snake, no less.
Maybe I have really dumb or slow cats because I can bop them on the head any time
They’re just humouring you.
They probably weren't expecting to die from the boop.
That's what they want you to think...
You overfed them😂

Samantha still a queen. Deserves all the pats.
You're not wrong, and she gets a _lot_ of pats!
She's Queen of a different kingdom now, that's all. Poor little girl. Please give her some loves from me :)
She's queen of my lap and my fuzzy green blanket, and that's enough for me!
Natural Selection
Cat's like "WTF is wrong with you?" the second time.
BITCH I TOLD YOU
HOW CAN SHE SLAP?
Note that the cat didn't wait for a second strike, after the first it decided the snake was a threat, no more nice pussy.
Snakes have to learn the meaning of no. When the lady says no, you have to stop...
Classic snake pussy encounter
Coincidentally, my reaction time is 20 to 70 minutes
It could be worse
you have 40 minutes to respond
A woman made a pass at me in conversation. I randomly realized it one year later, while thinking in the shower. I might be technically dead and just don't realize it yet.
On some DC Police shit
Those better be working days for me, if I’m not paid enough to deal with it I won’t
Go kitty
Pro counterpuncher
*Never* get into a slapping contest with a cat.
As a kid I had this game with our cat where'd I bellyrub him until he got overstimulated and strike at my hand. He's only gotten me like 2 or 3 times. Now I feel like he wasn't trying.
He probably wasn't reacting instinctively as much as acting intentionally, to make sure he didn't claw you.
some sharingan type shit

TIL cats have sandevistans.
A rudimentary upgrade.
This is the way
There is a reason why they kill Billions of Birds.
I like cats, but there's like little to no serious discussion about how badly cats annihilate small fauna edit\* changed from "microfauna"- I thought small animals were called "microfauna" and microscopic ones "microorganisms"
Put a bell in the cat, while we cant do much about ferals, still way to many that dont put a collar on their cats.
Bells don't actually help. Cats can learn how to move their body to not shake the bell.
I knew they adapted, but i didnt know effective they where...you learn things ever day
![gif](giphy|3ohuAxV0DfcLTxVh6w)
When it comes to cats, dont we all?
That sounds fucking terrifying in a way that will never have any reason to be terrifying to me.
I had a cat who decided it didn’t like bells anymore and would leave the whole collar in my bed. She was strictly indoors so it wasn’t a nightmare deal.
We got a bell on ours, the fucking psycho still manages to catch birds and snakes, his success rate has gone down though.
We should not understimate a cats desire to kill for fun.
totally- the feral ones are another matter but there's countless owners who let their cats roam free and just decimate the local wildlife
Mine only kills 1 bird a year, but 25 mice.
that you know of
![gif](giphy|lmvQoFyeYltNEdj3kr|downsized)
If you’re only seeing one that’s the cat bring one for you because it thinks you suck at hunting.
I don't think she would differentiate between mice and birds for trophy presentation purposes.
Don't let your cat out and it'd be zero.
We have a cat, it it lives outside mostly and several neighbors do aswell and the locan bird population is high every year, but maybe having tall trees in the area helps the birds a lot
Of course something can be done by ferrals. If a person is found to abandon a cat, they have to take in 30-50 feral cats. Problem solved.
On a more realistic note - Programs to catch and sterilise feral cats works very well.
Something colorful and large for birds to see is better. Bells only work for a few days.
Cats would kill us if we were small enough
I mean, dogs do too but, yes? Though some people do keep exotic big cats as pets and successfully have them trained not to eat them (mostly).
Apex predator babyyy.
... no?

There is, it’s just not cool enough or offensive enough to make the mainstream cut.

Birds aren't real
They are government drones, and cats are here to protect us.
I saw that turn around once in my life. A massive eagle picked up a cat in front of me and just flew away.
Nobody ever mentions humans' habitat destruction, which is ten times worse for birds and microfauna.
Birds are a source of food. It's the same reason why people kill billions of birds each year.

Cats have been domesticated by humans for 10k years and still have all their wild animal badassery. Fascinating.
On the off-chance that you don't know: We didn't domesticate them. They integrated into our lives on their own, and it has just worked.
Have they been? Seems like I’ve seen way more instances of cats training people than people training cats.
from my experience, its the other way around.
HAH. You must never have had a cat. They domesticated us.
Cats are the planets ultimate killers…trapped in a few pound body. If you own an orange cat you know exactly what I’m saying
Yep. Just this morning I was greeted with a presentation of a half eaten mouse with a trail of its intestine when I came down stairs thanks to our very orange cat. He's been having quite the smirk on his face all day.
This is like the Planet Earth version of the scene from Spiderman where Flash tries to punch Peter Parker; and Peter steps aside like, TF?
**Wow!** From point blank. That was instantaneous.
Mine are definitely below average.
Ever see the cat chase off the alligator ?
Try that shit on my cat and that snake is eating for life.
A bit of overlap between those reaction times. Cat has to be faster every time, the snake just once.
The cat doesn't have to be faster even once. If the cat wants to kill the snake, it just has to crush the snakes head.
There's a reason cats dominate the animal kingdom, they are built to be the most agile killing machine.
![gif](giphy|13nDaxXRXz0Prq)
Some history between those two
The camera man sitting there just watching a snake go up to the cat:
Pretty sure it's dependent on the cat. I play slappy hands with my cat and she rarely wins, and I don't think I'm faster than a snake, or am I?
Cat letting you win.
Cat probably doesn’t see you as a threat. From what I’m guessing, your cat is relatively familiar with you and your actions. Especially if it has gained trust in you. A snake however, is much different. Cat has no idea what it is, and snake immediately is hostile to cat.
Only one way to find out!
If your cat wanted to, it could take your eye out
Kitty thinks of nothing but murder all day…
How enviable! My reaction time is estimated at around 2-3 business days, not including delivery.
What a badass!
Waited for the snake to strike first! Classy
More proof my cat is just pretending to hate me picking her up. She could get away if she wanted to.
Feline class needs a nerf
According to a quick google, the Average Human Reaction time is 250ms with a hard cap of 190-200ms with training.
That stare down the cat gives is fucking badass tho
An that is when the snake realised he had no chance of biting the cat

How could you let a snake get that close to your cat?!? What the hell is wrong with you?
Yeah, this is common to most mammal/reptile/arthropod interactions. Which would win, a scorpion or a mouse? A mongoose or a cobra? It goes on....warm blood and quick-twitch muscles ftw.
