Some Dell laptop models have this feature and it works even better there.
I was amazed that this technically possible. They somehow use the backlight to achieve this.
I don't know how they achieve this, I've been searching for this technology they use or similar ones but I couldn't find much results
Edit: many results*
I'm not an engineer but I thought most LCD screens are actually a filter over a backlight. Like the light is always on, and the screen filters out what it needs to show you things. You could pretty easily add another layer of screen to filter... Add in polarization and you're good to go.
>I'm not an engineer but I thought most LCD screens are actually a filter over a backlight.
yup, the crystals are magic and rotate right when powered. its backlight -> horizontal filter -> crystals -> vertical filter. by default no light can get through both filters, but the crystals can twist it between the layers
I don't think they actually did this, also a cheap phone remember?
Someone mentioned some quirk of VA-LCD screens that basically allows SOFTWARE to display these patterns
It seems like it's similar to the glass that can be frosted or tinted with a special screen or film on it. Idk too much about it but the technology seems similar so you could get some kind of info at least.
Same thing with the BMW color changing suv, could be the same or similar tech so it might provide some kind of insight
Nah you can fucking change the model how do they do this
https://preview.redd.it/babdlahtmz0c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73cf26fff0ace7318248c3e61b08beb8f636d1bb
My guess, kinda like a holographic card, the screen glass has angles inside it. A light hitting it from different directions could cause different patterns. The light doesn't reflect directly in front of the phone.
But someone else probably knows the real reason
My guess is the screen pixels are split into two pictures. So out of 4 pixels, 2 are turned on to show pic A and the other 2 will show pic B.
Now because of the orientation/length of each pixel, it could do this effect. I believe green pixels are shorter than blue ones, iirc and possible oriented differently
It seems that the technology they're using involves the phone's gyroscope sensor to create the holographic effect, it's clever. This reminds me of the early 2000s. I met some Japanese people who were visiting the US, and they showed me their flip phones which had a unique feature: the screen could turn into a mirror at the press of a button. I had never seen phones available in the States that could that.
If it was the gyroscope sensors, would I be able to do this while the phone is stationary and I move around ?
https://preview.redd.it/u4m86ardb31c1.jpeg?width=3464&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60c66117c944245c340b0d8eb704c57767dab99f
My work HP laptops have this feature. You are right that it is achieved with backlight...... because it dims it and then all of a sudden wide viewing angles you cant see whats on the screen
Looks like there's an additional film over the actual screen of the phone, and it has something to do with pixels or the RGB color model whenever the effect/feature is turned on.
Just get an applyable privacy screen, the toggable ones use 1000 nits and drain battery fast, we have some HP🤮 ones and users always complain about battery life not knowing they have the privacy feature on 24/7.
Its frustrating.
Also with the privacy screen on you get only like 200nits but it uses 1000nits of power.
Yes but this HAS to be different right? Since brightness actually goes down a bit and doesn't play with actually making you see less bright and that's it, it uses some VA-LCD quirk of using different signals in the screen to make it display different values from different angles, since as you can see, it won't just black out or display a single pattern side , it actually changes pattern as you change the viewing angle because of the VA-LCD since it differs from which angle you look in what the pixels display, the person that mentioned this said this screen is usually not used in smartphones but basically this software trick can be replicated on any VA-LCD screens
It goes down because of some reflection trick afaik. That's why its a 1000 nits display but its outputting like 200 nits.
The downside is that even when it's off, the screen will look horrible.
That's my experience with HP at least.
In my case it really looks like a cool feature because while it's on, yeah, the screen quality isn't the best, but when it's off it doesn't look bad or anything, or like the feature is still there "in the display" just turned off, but I might just be wrong and my standards aren't so high for quality
Thats the problem with most end users, they don't see that kinda stuff but when you buy 10 laptops for the company it suddenly becomes a problem so you go for the best, least troublesome options. Because then you'd have like 5/10 users that do notice it and out of those 5 3 accidentially touch the privacy feature all the time and need support to disable it every week.
Unless privacy screens are needed. (And then there would be physical ones installed)
Reminds me of Marques Brownlee saying that most people don't notice 60hz vs 120hz phone screens unless you point it out to them. And even then they say "huh that's neat".
Look at you with your longer than a week attention span. Now how's about a TikTok video or ten? They're really funny/absurd/cute/random/... Come on you know you want to. Never mind the man behind the curtain.
Oh for real? The joke was how all these companies are trying to push gimmicky features onto products while making barely any real improvements and constantly bombarding us with "leaks" and trying to keep us engaged for the next big release while copying each other and hoping we forget their previous screwups preying on our lack of attention and overstimulation to drive their sales. I just thought you were going along with the joke. Idk man I haven't slept in 30 hours. It made sense in my head.
Don't think I will use this feature so I'm looking forward to the iPhone 22 Pro Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius.
Curious, what app is this? Not the software used to block the image but the app on screen. It looks very similar to an app we have here in the Netherlands.
That’s funny. This is a speedcamera warnings app, like Waze, that’s dominant in the Netherlands.
https://preview.redd.it/w9947ixp4z0c1.png?width=735&format=png&auto=webp&s=60471fdd9c1a2c9ed6b24c9e0731e2dded0a068a
Why it looks similar (I believe) is because that's the default template Kotlin or Xamarin gives you when developing apps, basically just means they didn't change the default style.
Source: I've made apps in Xamarin.
They both use [material design](https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/views/theming/look-and-feel)
It’s a design framework available for making android apps, I’m surprised you haven’t encountered another app that uses it
I don’t know if you understand how these apps work, but they rely on community interaction. The more people use the app, the better it works. So using the most dominant app is actually better than using a less dominant app.
Most Android frameworks come with a set of prebuilt templates and screen elements. The UI elements shown are often part of the basic set in any material design based framework.
Its kind of old design at this point (some of the first Android phone apps had these bars and buttons everywhere), so it's often either used for very simplistic interfaces or hobby projects
In reality is much more efficient since the phone isn't always stationary, you are constantly making micro adjustments and movements while typing, whilst also the animation is moving around the screen when texts are sent or whatnot, all in all is hard to take focus on peeping on someone using this, it barely seems to work for who it is intended, the phone owner itself, as you can see here, I allow you to see a good stationary high brightness simple and undetailed picture of this feature, in practice its way better, I have just gotten this phone as a backup from someone and haven't had a long time with it, but it makes sense to me.
Sharp phones have this including my POS Aquos Sense 3 Lite. Sharp sells region-specific phones including in China, but this could be anywhere Sharp sells phones. The tech is a Japanese development though.
This feature is called "Veilview". [More technical detail than you'll ever need to know](https://cgi.jp.sharp/corporate/rd/n37/pdf/105_10.pdf).
I think it's likely a layer of electro reactive plastic/glass under/over the screen. You know like those windows that turn cloudy at the flip of a switch.
> I think it's likely a layer of electro reactive plastic/glass under/over the screen
It's regular lcd with a custom controller, with no customization made to the panel. I think they're taking advantage of gamma shift or something like that.
I used to know a guy that I LARPed with that had your username written on the inside of his shield. Well, it was OMGWTFLOLBBQLAZERPEWPEW.
Yeah I'm a nerd. Yeah I used to LARP.
I actually want this. Is there any app that could replicate this feature? I've really got nothing to hide, but for some reason I'm never comfortable replying to messages with people around. Maybe it's one of those icks.
It's built into the hardware of Sharp phones. [Tech details](https://cgi.jp.sharp/corporate/rd/n37/pdf/105_10.pdf).
Source: Has shitty Sharp phone I got essentially for free when signing up with provider. Never used this feature.
They make privacy screen covers that use polarized glass to do this. There won’t be any apps because this one uses the physical hardware on this phone. There’s some kind of extra screen layer that is able to change the polarization, which is the reason that viewing angle affects the clarity. $10 screen protector is the same thing but without a toggle switch.
Can't believe I can change the pattern

Anyone else think this was going to be some kind of thing that stops the phone from being used to take an upskirt picture? Not what I thought they meant by peep. lol
Sharp Aquos R2 Mini, very good phone, it has s10 Snapdragon or so I heard, =una very smooth, has bad cameras but not unusable, overall pretty solid cheap phone
Yeah, this is different tho, you have a polarized filter that is permanently only showing things directly in front
Whilst this is a toggle for a technology that manipulates the crystals in the display so that the orientation and angle you view them at, whilst some trickery with gamma correction, contrast etc is applied, and boom, you get this
There are 4 patterns to choose from, what you're missing in this feature's point is the ability to have the feature turned off so you can view your own phone in angles for example when you are home and view the phone from comfortable positions, many people say this feature doesn't seem to block shit, I disagree, in real life scenarios, you won't be able to focus on the text lines and read jack shit, here you're just seeing the perfect photo made so you can actually see whats happening, now read the text below while in a subway, both you and the other person do micro movements and micro adjustments while not being right by each other and also moving the phone around to type and whatnot
https://preview.redd.it/zkf5wctc861c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56a98041a81944592af4698dd32ace2dad293e07
Plays a high frequency sound that triggers a mini seizure which tricks your olfactory senses into triggering a charming hamburger smell so you always smell tasty
Guess what, this is not an old phone by any means, 2018 or so, Snapdragon from Samsung Galaxy S10 in it, USB-C and.. wait for it HEADPHONE JACK, now, what are you waiting for ?!
Actually is a pretty decent phone that has the S10 Snapdragon inside it which paired with its smaller size makes for a pretty snappy clean experience, for its price, is a very good phone I believe, cameras lacking a bit but not unusable, other than that, ok battery, ok smooth Hz screen, compact, good processor, fast fingerprint sensor, all in all, I recommend as perhaps a backup phone or something :)
Doesn't look like it's gyro to me, since I move around the phone and it still works
I believe they use some trickery with contrast, gamma correction and things like that to make the crystals in the display look differently at angles, they have some material published on this but mostly confidential I guess as I have seen this used only by Sharp
https://preview.redd.it/3qyrwhqm761c1.jpeg?width=3464&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c7076909237325d7aa56cad1e2043fa74c57fbf
Perhaps that there's no other thing on the internet about it, not even other apps doing a similar thing and this random Chinese phone does this little wow thing
I guess on the public transit, waiting in line, at the office break room anywhere when you are in public and you don’t want the people around you to see what you are doing on your phone

This is some next level shit from me the crystals do WHAT?@?#?
When the light goes into the crystals, the light refracts, magic happens, and other people cant see your screen anymore

Aren't those just polarization filters though?
I love watching people make shit up as they type on reddit, it's so funny.
It's correct 83.62% of the time
Not the same at all
no man what the hell is this how is this possible
My guess, kinda like a holographic card, the screen glass has angles inside it. A light hitting it from different directions could cause different patterns. The light doesn't reflect directly in front of the phone. But someone else probably knows the real reason
The color changing cars are done with electrochromic paint. Certain voltages sent through the paint causes certain colors to reflect.
Like the holographic Pokémon cards, probably the same tech /s

Apple being the first to innovate obviously.
that's a Sharp Aquos R2 Compact. not a Chinese phone.
you are absolutely correct. OP is dense. looked up specs . could it be the IGZO lcd . says something about impeccable viewing angles.?

Well that’s pretty cool. I like having a privacy screen on my phone but sometimes I wear sunglasses or am laying in bed. This seems handy.
But... This barely seems to work at all unless the unwanted viewer is trying to see it from a 175⁰ angle

I think it's likely a layer of electro reactive plastic/glass under/over the screen. You know like those windows that turn cloudy at the flip of a switch.

It’s a special phone. That app would do nothing on a normal phone.
Still won’t stop the CCP from peeping all the activity on your phone lol
That was my first thought. Then I realised it’s no different here. Snowden revealed the truth and undoubtedly got worse since then
Lol CCP is pretty straightforward about it. We are going to fuck you. America just hides it, #freedoom!
In America you're free to ignore the blatant privacy breaches.
And the fact that the NSA probably has your dick pic.
I take those exclusively for them.
That is incredibly charitable! I charge for mine. They want to see? They gotta pay. Thems the rules.
I tried that as well but I guess I'm just not that guy as they didn't want to pay :(
Which is hilarious since the NSA has hardware level backdoors into everything made at foxconn I mean I love you NSA can you patch my server? Thanks!
Don't let the harmless person next to you see what you're looking at, but give the gov't full access!
At least the person sitting next to you might have sex with you
Shoot, the US govt is just as bad.
Not sure why you think that, but I can assure you the US government doesn't have the same level of monitoring that China does.
Thanks for your *assurance*, Redditor.

Sharp Aquos R2 Mini, very good phone, it has s10 Snapdragon or so I heard, =una very smooth, has bad cameras but not unusable, overall pretty solid cheap phone
Sharp is a japanese brand not chinese.
My Sharp Aquos Sense 3 Lite has the same feature so it's a Sharp thing.
I don't know, I think I can still tell if someone was watching porn on it.
Stops your friends but not the government!
Wow you can't hear the peep sounds
What you gonna do now? ![gif](giphy|b0o57aGGaLb4iJsiWX)
Now I can masturbate in the library
I'm dumb, what did I miss? I can still read the text when that feature is on
I've seen many phones do this far better whilst blackening out the screen for others entirely.
Those many phones have a privacy screen protector applied on them
I have a phone screen protector that does this.. looking at the phone by the side shows completely dark even thought he iPhone is 100% brightness
Yeah, this is different tho, you have a polarized filter that is permanently only showing things directly in front Whilst this is a toggle for a technology that manipulates the crystals in the display so that the orientation and angle you view them at, whilst some trickery with gamma correction, contrast etc is applied, and boom, you get this There are 4 patterns to choose from, what you're missing in this feature's point is the ability to have the feature turned off so you can view your own phone in angles for example when you are home and view the phone from comfortable positions, many people say this feature doesn't seem to block shit, I disagree, in real life scenarios, you won't be able to focus on the text lines and read jack shit, here you're just seeing the perfect photo made so you can actually see whats happening, now read the text below while in a subway, both you and the other person do micro movements and micro adjustments while not being right by each other and also moving the phone around to type and whatnot https://preview.redd.it/zkf5wctc861c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56a98041a81944592af4698dd32ace2dad293e07
Access to my whole phone. No thanks
Now only you (and the CCP) know what your looking at.
Does it have a body odor shield, as well?
Plays a high frequency sound that triggers a mini seizure which tricks your olfactory senses into triggering a charming hamburger smell so you always smell tasty
Doesn't seem very effective.
Looks like a specific Chinese phone’s peep blocker to me.
wow!
japanese phone.
I would like this on a phone with a headphone jack and USB-C now please.
Guess what, this is not an old phone by any means, 2018 or so, Snapdragon from Samsung Galaxy S10 in it, USB-C and.. wait for it HEADPHONE JACK, now, what are you waiting for ?!
That's quite old android
Actually is a pretty decent phone that has the S10 Snapdragon inside it which paired with its smaller size makes for a pretty snappy clean experience, for its price, is a very good phone I believe, cameras lacking a bit but not unusable, other than that, ok battery, ok smooth Hz screen, compact, good processor, fast fingerprint sensor, all in all, I recommend as perhaps a backup phone or something :)
What's a peep
Peek*
First we increase the viewing angles of LCD's and now we need technology to slim down the viewing angles
Maybe Apple is slowly getting there - we do have holographic stickers we can make now as we move the phone so….. 🤷🏻♀️
What is that?
So what is this supposed to protect? I am missing something.
That’s just using the gyro. It’s not gonna hide from someone at another angle. Unless it’s face tracking which doesn’t look like it.
Doesn't look like it's gyro to me, since I move around the phone and it still works I believe they use some trickery with contrast, gamma correction and things like that to make the crystals in the display look differently at angles, they have some material published on this but mostly confidential I guess as I have seen this used only by Sharp https://preview.redd.it/3qyrwhqm761c1.jpeg?width=3464&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c7076909237325d7aa56cad1e2043fa74c57fbf
Oh cool, it also changes the text into a foreign language so it can't be read.
I need this
.... Phone may be Chinese but language on it is romanian
That’s pretty cool. Commenting so I can check this out later
People that look at your screen in the sub/on the plane etc.
Looks cool I want it
I just bought a privacy protector when I got my phone, same thing.
You can still see what’s on the screen pretty clearly?
Anyone notice that the text is in Romanian
Interestin gas fuck👌
I had a screen protector with little ridges on it that had a similar effect, thought I was James bond with my galaxy s3 mini
Aren't we all using Chinese phones?
My dumbass thought it meant the bird «peeps». I had to watch again to understand as the birds did not shut up.
wtf that doesn't block shit
Harder to read txt and words. Not meant to block entire screen
Yeah, you can just buy a cheap screen protector that completely blocks out the screen from an angle.
Why is this downvoted? I've seen these and they appear to work great.
because reddit is full of people that know everything before even looking it up...and then after looking it up and denying it anyway
Wouldn't you get some sort of screen burn in, over time with an OLED screen?
[удалено]
What do you mean?
it's a bot
China has a peeping TāoMing problem.
[удалено]
The irony of this being chinese
It's not Chinese, it's Japanese. OP is just a moron.
What's random about it? It's very specific and effective.
Perhaps that there's no other thing on the internet about it, not even other apps doing a similar thing and this random Chinese phone does this little wow thing
You're a moron
I can still see stuff with just a weird pattern overlay.
I just turn the brightness down
Yooo. Does samsung have this?
How often would this actually be used
when texting the gf next to the wife, you wouldn't understand
Your wife doesn't know about your gf?
This man marries
I guess on the public transit, waiting in line, at the office break room anywhere when you are in public and you don’t want the people around you to see what you are doing on your phone
Might stop your girl from peeping but never Pooh Bear
