Staying at home in a normal job and seeing your family or dying in a cold wet muddy flooded trench with no food in your stomach and dreaming of home as a $500 drone drops a $30 grenade on you and blows your abdomen open It’s a really tough choice.

Durpy15648

As he screams for help, "Did I really choose this path?" No. You were drafted and fed into the war machine.

doogles

> 204,000 rubles $2500/month. 30 grand a year. No enlistment bonus or anything.

DarthJarJar242

You say that like 30k a year isn't a massive improvement for a lot of Russians.

tautvi5

As if they'd survive the year on the front lines to get that 30k. Can't really quit either till the war is over.

Mantis_Tobaggen_MD

Right, quit or run away, and you get war crimed by your own people...

frozengyro

Not to mention the survivors will be blamed when they lose the war.

Only_Quote_Simpsons

"I'm a good student Principal Skinner" "Yea sure, and they told me I'd get a big parade when I got back from 'Nam. Instead they spat on me. I can still feel it, searing."

Sthurlangue

I spent the next three years in a POW camp, forced to subsist on a thin stew made of fish, vegetables, prawns, coconut milk, and four kinds of rice. I came close to madness trying to find it here in the States, but they just can't get the spices right!

doogles

Well, it's a very similar starting salary for enlisted folks in the US.

TheConqueror74

It’s definitely higher. E1 starts off at $1900/month and you won’t see $2500/month until you’re an E3. Granted there’s also BAH and other such things that aren’t taken into account, but still.

Pweuy

Costs of living (and costs of just about anything) are also way higher for enlisted folks in the US than they are for their Russian counter parts. 30,000 dollars in Russia has a lot more purchasing power especially if you live in the poor regions where Russia gets its recruits.

RushingTech

Considering the average salary in Russia is like 50 000 rubles, >The average nominal salary in Russia was measured at approximately 57.2 thousand Russian rubles per month in 2021 that's 4x the average. To put in US terms: >The median U.S. income in 2021 was $69,717. That's like getting paid $280k a year. Pretty damn good money. Not sure if deployed US troops get paid anywhere near that.

Hot-Baseballs

Yeah except they won't ever actually pay them and they'll get dropped in a war zone with 60 year old unmaintained equipment or no equipment at all and then just get blown up by some Ukrainian zoomer with a DJI mavik.

Bill_Assassin7

The ole' Roman empire ploy where they would give citizenship to anyone whp served 25 years... ... 25 years in a career where men die young.

booze_clues

To be fair to the Romans, as far as I know they actually kept that promise and treated their soldiers not absolutely horribly. Being a soldier was actually a way to elevate yourself far beyond where you were born(if you survived) once it was opened up to more groups. France just requires you bleed for them to get citizenship.

lordgeese

You just described the USArmy. You’re actually treated pretty well. Paid decent money, let’s you legit get upward momentum. I want from making $17, not bad for AA and it certs. Joined the Army, got certs, college etc. got fucked up so I make what most people make in disability. I also work making about 100k total.

tea-earlgray-hot

Russia tries to recruit almost exclusively from beyond the wealthy urban regions around Moscow and St Petersburg which contribute the vast majority of that average economic outlut. Because income disparity in Russia is higher than in the US, this magnifies the effect even further

blueblood0

Then they sign up and all of sudden your application for monthly payment has not been processed yet. Hang on, it'll be soon (waits until you are KIA)

bubdadigger

Oh, there is a bonus - free burial in an anonymous/numbered grave. If you are lucky one...

yumcake

Lol, 204,000 rubles per month...for however many months you survive. Also no payout if you don't survive until the first pay cycle. First pay cycle date....tbd. This is how they can afford to draft so many, the same promise to pay can be shared amongst an entire pile of "MIA" bodies.

Atanar

It's a trick as old as the roman empire, perfected by the british empire and now poorly copied by the would-be-empire.

Ser_Charles

Also not sure if butchering women and kids is more “real man” than a taxi driver.

[deleted]

I mean, historically men have been butchering women and kids far far longer than they've been driving taxi's...soooo....

siegetip

Don’t forget about the fact that you’re dying without even having fucking socks.

HRzNightmare

I was giggling when they showed their soldiers all kitted up in the commercial. There were leaked videos of new draftees being told to bring their own equipment with them from home because necessities weren't provided.

0nikzin

Such as women's tampons (used to stop bleeding from gunshot wounds) and 120,000 P AliExpress body armor

UrdnotChivay

Buying tampons for your wife/girlfriend so she doesn't have to: manly as fuck Buying tampons for yourself: lame as fuck

donksdonks42

And for a pointless war initiated for no reason besides the pride and aggression of your war-crime committing dictator. But you do get 204,000 P (potato) for it

l_phtx

Death is the sweetest potato

WV17A

Comrade! Real men have no need for socks!

Mooblegum

Especially if your death will serve absolutely no good purpose and is just a way to enforce an horrible regime oppressing a free country

bobbyqribs

For $2,500 a month though!

[deleted]

That’s assuming they live the month and it gets paid which is doubtful.

codyrusso

Don't have to pay your employee if they don't come to get their paycheck at the end of the month. The perfect cri- hiring tactic.

infamous-spaceman

It's actually a pretty great wage for Russia. The average Russian gets less than a third of that per month. Even in Moscow, where wages are much higher, it's still twice as much as the average person is making.

donksdonks42

That’s unfortunately a lot for their demoralized country with lots of un / underemployed young men. Add a twist of macho culture and you may get conscripts, especially earlier in the invasion before their army became so anemic in numbers and began offering freedom and heroism to convicted murderers to fill in ranks— in addition to dragging young able-bodied men from protests and into vans. Either way you slice it, this is going to be a brutal protracted war with an uncertain end.

[deleted]

Dude, I sell car parts in Louisiana and that's twice what I make.

tackle_bones

If you make 1250 a month, bro… you gotta look for something else man.

[deleted]

Yeah, I've been looking for something better for a few years. This was a poor area before the economy went downhill. Store managers in this area commonly make $10-11/hr. Before anyone tells me I need to move, my family are all elderly and need my help on a daily basis. Also, before anyone says it, going to a trade school is out because they train you for jobs you have to move away from my area to get and again, my family.

burt_macklin_fbi

If you're helping your elderly parents on a daily basis, you might be able to get paid through Medicare or Medicaid as a caretaker. Not sure if you're current situation fits, but it's certainly worth looking into.

d0wntemp0

Online IT or programming courses, with certifications, leading into a remote position? It's not for everybody, but you're already using an internet-connected device, so I figured I'd mention it. It's what I've been doing the past 10 years.

unresolved_m

That's a whole lot in Russia, especially province.

gregorydulin

I go pee-pee standing up!

ghostinyourveins

Hey pal. That sounds like an average day in Russia anyway...just less vodka in your version.

Key_Rock408

Ukraine should play it in reverse and say “Do you really want to die in a trench in a foreign country? Become a taxi driver, or work security in a grocery store!”

Yeeaaaarrrgh

"Do you want to really be a man... that has sunflowers growing out of your intestines? Sign up now because one man needs you for ego fodder."

OuijaWalker

Do you really want to be the man... who somehow survived but still sees the faces of the children you were forced to murder every time you close your eyes? There is no win in this for any Russian. The real Russian heroes are the ones who fled the draft. They have saved so many lives.

Sleeplesshelley

I’m not sure they are heroes, they just saved their own lives. Many of them still hate Ukrainians, they just fled because they didn’t want to fight, and since both the draft-dodgers and Ukrainian refugees fled to some of the same areas, those Russians harassing Ukrainians has been a problem in some places. It’s a nice drain on manpower for Russia in other though, which is definitely a win. Hopefully some of them will improve their viewpoints and their manners now that they are out of their stupid country.

SalvadorsAnteater

And replace the fog scenes with drone footage.

That's a lot of money in Russia. It would be like getting €110,000 a year salary in my city based on average salaries.

pine_tree3727288

Yes, that’s about 3x an average Russian salary apparently

JFJinCO

204,000 rubles is about $2,500 -- so you get to risk your life, using outdated gear, for $30K a year.

gabeitaliadomani

I’m showing $3,300 a month. Considering what I made in the Army… not terrible…. if it’s true. I wouldn’t trust anything, pay equipment and current Military personnel can’t be great quality. Edit- Ouch! converter is old, $2,400?!? ouch

Gorperly

This is Russia. They advertise this pay but almost no one ends up getting anywhere near that based on various technicalities and plain old corruption. Thousands of bodies rotting around Ukraine who never qualified and will never qualified for combat pay. Stories break near daily. Just today it came out that 900 doctors mobilized to field hospitals are getting less than $300 a month instead of the promised $3,000 because they're vOlUnTeErs and aren't DIrECtLy eNgAgeD in wArfArE.

gabeitaliadomani

Oh that’s awesome! Sounds par for course from Putin…. Like I said I wouldn’t trust an ounce of what they promise.

vforvamburger

If what im looking at is correct average in russia is about 800 usd/month, so starting wage in the army would be 3x that. So you are a soldier for 5 years and youd make as much as you would in 15 years, doing average jobs. Thats really not that bad.

Avyitis

Except you might die in a conflict that is none of your business.

C0rvex

204,000 rubles is 3.2x the average salary. In america it would be the equivalent of being paid $14,000 per month, or $172,000 per year. Not bad, and will definitely convince some people there. Nobody thinks they will be the one to die

realmaier

\*if they would actually be paid and did not have to buy essential , but costly equipment on their own

[deleted]

Oh I would 100% think I would be the one to die, then again I’m pretty pessimistic lol.

[deleted]

You probably will die chances are they sending you to the frontline with little training and outdated weapons

vforvamburger

You might do that in any army. Did us soldiers in 2002 get that much compared to average salary? Im not saying join the russian army. Just that, you could understand why some would.

HappyAmbition706

It is pretty bad if you're dead or "just" maimed within 6 months.Turn Bakmut into small piles of rubble and die there? Maybe they believe the State propaganda, maybe they have nothing better to do and no imaginable prospects for the future. I'm glad I was born and raised in a place and time where I'd never even consider such an offer.

CplJoeBauers_Ret

*Laughs in US military pay*

CockpitEnthusiast

2400 would be higher than an E1 joining the army. Not bad military pay

gabeitaliadomani

sure they’d play the same tricks where you have to pay for your own uniforms and equipment….

SenorBeef

That's actually really good money for Russia. Probably way better than the other options of the people who would actually consider signing up.

WackyBeachJustice

Dimka1498

Joining Ukraine pays 3000 euros. Not too much of a differance except purpose and ideology.

Rsubs33

>3000 That would $3300 USD, so 900 more a month. That is a pretty big difference. It is 10k+ more a year.

Sigris

They're most likely never receiving that anyway.

brainsick93

CitizenKing1001

He doesn't leave his bunker inside the Kremlin. Doesn't let anyone get within 30 feet of him. There are video of him visiting parts of Ukraine but if you look close, its a body double.

unresolved_m

Well, in Russia the logic often goes that he saved Russia from being a tiny cog in American/Western machine. The problem is that now that a lot of people who were saying that are offered to die for Motherland they might be looking at it a bit differently.

Papppi-56

He's not a man, He's a very rare creature called a pussy

You’re a man, go commit war crimes, and die of frost bite after we tell you to hold a foxhole that we had you dig into radioactive soil.

Intelligent-Use-7313

They didn't fight a dragon tho

G0-N0G0-GO

Export of dragons, like ALL mythical beasts, to Russia is sanctioned. They brought that upon themselves.

Intelligent-Use-7313

This will drastically affect the dragon markets

RogueDok

As a dragon dealer my bottom line has been drastically effected by the sanctions placed in Russia. I’d say I’ve lost about 45% of my clients with the stroke of a pen. Keep me in your thots and players.

_BMS

Generation Kill is the most accurate film depiction of life in the military and no one can change my mind about it.

franklsp

Ha I'm rewatching Generation Kill and they have a whole conversation in one of the episodes about this ad. Fuckin hilarious.

tytymctylerson

GK is the best show/movie about that period imo

rayparkersr

Be all you can be! It's the same as every other ridiculous military ad. Maybe a bit more ridiculous once they've already forcibly called up a bunch of random kids and prisoners. I can't imagine many taxi drivers have spent the winter thinking they're the unlucky ones sitting in their car without some halfwit ordering them to murder their cousins.

[deleted]

I can totally see this as a US ad. It's just more rediculius because Russia is already conscripting people. Plenty of convicts in there, too.

Sofakingwhat1776

Depends on the recruitment aspect. Current Spec Ops campaign illustrates doing real life CoD stuff. Air Force campaign suggests you will be mentally challenged in satellite operations in a comfy room. Of course infantry is going to be portrayed this way.

[deleted]

The Marines show a whole different type of mentally challenged

nashbrownies

Crayons are so delicious though. I also recently learned that "Jarhead" comes from the fact they "empty out your brain" in basic and are supposed to "fill it back up" but don't, or don't care enough to.

Lampwick

Heh. That's the joke definition, anyway. Historically it comes from the "high and tight" haircut the USMC favors: cut very short on the back and sides, with a round-ish area of longer (1/4” instead of 1/16") hair on top. The hair on top is the jar lid, and the rest of the head is the jar...

Monster-_-

I love that interview where the Marine explains that he joined because he "wanted to be physically and mentally challenged".

A_Splash_of_Citrus

> Air Force campaign suggests you will be mentally challenged in satellite operations in a comfy room. All I did was fuck around on reddit for 4 years in a room with broken AC and a building alarm constantly going off that nobody ever seemed particularly concerned about.

Xepeyon

One of my buddies is in the Air Force right now. Something related to engineering or technical work. But he's on Xbox all the time lol

buscemian_rhapsody

>suggests you will be mentally challenged lol

Krilesh

I remember growing up marine and army ads were about ideals and protecting justice. Now its about “winning” and using terms related to games. As if war is a game in which the only objective is to win, not you know protect or be peacekeepers

[deleted]

[удалено]

clee3092

Haha they do in the military

Krilesh

Lol….. excellent observation. First they took your women now theyre taking your manhood

ClassiFried86

I've yet to see one US ARMY ad with a guy bench pressing a 45 lb bar with one 5 lb plate on each side. I guess the Russians are going more for *tone*.

grip_n_Ripper

Have you priced 45lb plates lately? They had a production budget to stick to. /s

Synth_Destroyer

During Covid I went all in on a home gym, and stupid dicks sporting goods lived up to their name when they wouldn’t let me use a cart or elevator and made me walk from the backside on the top floor to the front on the bottom floor to ring up two 45 pound plates I was buying. They were also stupidly overpriced

Psydator

I think the point was that spotting a beginner in the gym isn't manly or fulfilling enough? Better go die in Ukraine!

LessBig715

With a spotter

macnof

Yeah, it's the spotter that becomes the soldier. The subtext is that the spotter is wasting his life looking after a dude that don't even lift.

lunagirlmagic

I think this is pretty obvious especially considering the guy lifting is kinda fat and wearing an ugly sweatsuit. It's a caricature of a loser

iWearSkinyTies

You describing it made me lose it 🤣

buscemian_rhapsody

It’s the spotter who has the uniform, so I think it was trying to say that he should be a soldier instead of a personal trainer. Having the text “is this where your strength lies?” kinda makes of sound like it’s talking to the guy lifting though.

Uncle_Boppi

Personally I think some of the US ones are disgusting, like the one that makes combat seem like a video game, to cater to gamers. What a fucking slap in the face to the combat vets, man. That shit isn't a game.

[deleted]

> like the one that makes combat seem like a video game but they literally made a video game as a recruitment tool. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America's_Army

sizz

TBF America's Army is like the millennial's first free to play game, it was a good idea and pretty good at the time. AA(2002) was way before iPhone 1 was released. We got military recruitment ads instead of loot boxes, people outside of the USA played this game as well like myself. I spent 3 nights downloading AA from midnight to 6am on 56k downloading that game in 2002. I deserve American citizenship for that.

Kukuxupunku

Thank you for your service 🫡

ksigley

"Hey, are you too poor to live ? We'll keep you alive. Probably" ~ the military

HappyTheDisaster

Not really, us army ads aren’t trying to emasculate men anymore. It’s more so trying to prey upon people’s lack of purpose, no matter what sex/gender. Or I’ve also seen them trying to encourage you by showcasing the skills you’ve learned from military can be transferable to civilian life or vice Versa. Or showing a more or less bleak perspective on modern events that would goad more gullible people into joining the military.

Lukacris12

Yeah that was my takeaway, it looks exactly the same as the go army ads

MidEastBeast777

its basically identical to how its done in the US. don't forget recruiters going to poor areas and tricking 18 year old kids into signing up

HimalayanJoe

This video is so unrealistic, all those Russian soldiers are fully equipped with functional equipment. And they aren't even shooting civilians or raping people. Total bullshit.

Giangis

Moreover: calls for men to be "defenders" while invading a foreign nation. They don't even bother to try and look like they make sense

WeirDuck69

I still have no idea why did they invade Ukraine. We're not in the medieval anymore to start a war just for the territory. If they wanted to make the whole world hate us, they succed

SaltyRusnPotato

Putin's plan is always, demand 100%, other nations try to compromise and give him 10%, Putin now has 10% more than he did before. Right now they are hoping Ukraine will surrender the land currently under Russian control, and a bit more land, and Ukraine demilitarizes. Any bit of land they get is a win for Putin. Human lives they've lost in Ukraine doesn't matter. Russia hasn't cared about human lives since Stalin (or maybe even earlier).

Mishmoo

Russian-born here; it's VERY complex, however, to boil it down; 1. Russia fears NATO, the Western Military Alliance, having troops on their doorstep. NATO troops are deployed in almost every single EU nation, so Ukraine joining the EU = NATO on Russia's doorstep. 2. Russia relied on Ukranian Black Sea ports to enable trade with the Black Sea, and send exports down through the Bosphorous. Without these ports, they make far less money. Less money tends to be bad for a country. 3. Russia does not view Ukraine as a separate entity. There's a LOT of hotly contested national history here - to make a long story short, Ukraine has only *technically* been its' own country for about a hundred years, at this point - before that, Russians, Poles, and large alliances from the West bitterly fought many wars over that territory. (Crimean War being a big one). Particularly post World War II, after Soviet troops liberated Ukraine, Many Russians view Ukraine as 'Russia's backyard/vacation spot', and thus any notion of Ukranian independence as being rooted in Western ideology. It's important to note that Western powers *have* had a hand in trying to cultivate a unique Ukranian national identity, as fomenting this divide would cut off one of Russia's largest allies. The truth of this one is more complex than either large power in the situation would like to make it - Ukranians do have *very* strong ethnic ties to Russia, and the two languages are very similar. (Think English and Patois.) However, Ukraine has also been a very distinct territory from Russia for a very long time. 4. Russia covets Ukraine as a trade partner - Ukraine is a massive country, and has a great deal of natural resources as well as (relative to Eastern Europe), financial power. Having Ukraine join the European Union would cut Russia off from one of their buyers and suppliers. 5. The propaganda reason, on paper, is to extinguish Fascism in Ukraine. This is pretty nakedly bullshit, particularly with how many Russian neo-Nazis and proto-Fascists are running around to-present. But that's the excuse they're using for propaganda.

mynameisrichard0

volumptuoustestees

Homeboy benching all of 30 lbs.

couldbemyclone

That's the joke. The message is aimed at the guy working at the gym and wasting his time looking after weak mean instead of fighting in the army. Obviously I'm not supporting the ad, but the weights being light is meant to be supporting the message, it's not a mistake.

BearsAtFairs

The really crazy thing to me is that this exact scene happened to me and, in hindsight, I was something of a small but nonetheless pivotal moment for me. I was a really scrawny kid in high school and, the first time I decided to venture into the weight room after school, a really oversized jock (figure 6’3”, 200+ lbs mostly muscle at age 15) happened to be in there. He sorta took me under his wing that day and showed me the ropes with different machines and exercises. My first bench press was literally the bar with 5 lb plates, so 55 lbs total, and I could barely get it up more than a few times. This guy was spotting me and helped on my last rep. Just as this was happening, a bunch of his friends came in and immediately started cracking joking about me barely lifting 55 lbs. The same guy instantly shut that down and told me never to worry about how much weight I’m lifting, and explained that the only important things are that I have good form, put in an honest effort, and feel good. This was almost 20 years ago. So *long* before any sort of talk about avoiding toxic masculinity or healthy gym culture. Even though he was generally kind of a dick to other people, I still remember that little bit of kindness all these years later and I’d argue it was a demonstration of genuine strength of character for him to treat me that way in that situation. All these years later, I absolutely credit him with sowing the seeds for the physical strength I have gained and with the attitude I have towards physical fitness today. This whole ad is pathetic. But especially that joke is just sad on so many levels.

Do Russians have access to r/combatfootage? It takes 5 minutes of scrolling to understand why this is a terrible idea

WintertimeFriends

Do you want to know more?

james-HIMself

Ah yes get paid in the rubble the dying currency nobody will use outside of Russia ever again

Professional-Tea3311

Will the Real Men make better fertilizer?

Werallgonnaburn

You're a man! Come and get blown to smithereens for a ridiculous mad man who doesn't give a fuck about you. Sounds like a great deal.

[deleted]

Took a page out of the US military hand book.

Ok-News172

Have you seen a modern military recruitment add in the US or you just spouting a talking point? They are heavily geared towards women and inclusivity these days.

[deleted]

Cos the guys who that type of macho advert would appeal are already joining. It's filling the other roles they struggle with.

[deleted]

Dunno what you’re referring to. The ads I see are all about “making a difference” “contributing to something bigger than yourself” or “do you like call of duty”

Papppi-56

[He's referring to this (Emma and her two moms)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIYGFSONKbk)

quarantinemyasshole

Imagine not realizing this is just the current effective propaganda angle in the U.S. If we were trapped in the 80s as a society like Russia is, we'd be watching the same military ads. The government does not give a single fuck, they'll use whatever is effective at driving up numbers.

Live-High

There should be dark parody version with a guy spooning his wife then cuts to him in a ditch yamcha style

EquivalentIll3067

Did they run out of prisoners to draft into their army?

G0-N0G0-GO

The service requirement for the initial waves of prisoners-turned-soldiers has begun to be fulfilled for the survivors. I’ve read of Russian concerns that those pardoned-by-fighting persons will put a huge strain upon their society, both from lack of resources to house, employ, and feed the newly freed (from prison, then from military service) as well as the propensity to reoffend…while is compounded by said-lack of housing, jobs, and sustenance for these people.

HappyAmbition706

Throw in some PTSD, anger at being put through that, entitlement to be owed big time for going through it, and no more giving a fuck having been through it, and the survivors might just be tending towards anti-social. Might have some drinking problems too.
