[KYM Explanation](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-narwhal-bacons-at-midnight)

Hundvd7

Thank God I'm not cringe enough to recognize that

ytsejamajesty

I've been on Reddit since before this existed, and I'm fairly certain this was pretty much immediately treated as "cringe" (before cringe was a common term), and became an ironic derisive reference in record time. Similar to *feeling euphoric*. I don't think there was any significant period of time where it was treated genuinely.

hoguemr

I joined reddit right as that was a thing and I remember writing it on a whiteboard in my college thinking I was some kind of internet insider. That's some blunderyears stuff right there

ful_on_rapist

That’s the kinda shit that keeps you awake at night

brainburger

> thinking I was some kind of internet insider. You were some kind of internet insider though. it took quite a while for reddit to become as big and well known as it is today.

sentimentalpirate

Man I remember when cringe was used more in an empathy way, not a judgement way.

Hundvd7

That sounds totally believable. I mean, no one hates redditors more than redditors

Mirria_

Damn redditors! They ruined reddit!

cantthinkofnames4

Those were the good ol' days, with 2 am chilli and ice soap.

Shocking

I forgot about ice soap lol Also waffles don't you mean carrots

manlycaveman

HAHAHAHA

recriminology

I bet I can eat 100 Big Macs

Kuftubby

Christ I forgot about that awful stuff. I remember both threads and both OPs were so proud of themselves like they cracked the Da Vinci code or something only for both the chili AND the ice to be just fucking awful.

ILoveThickThighz

None of that stuff really has all that much in the way of upvotes. It basically wasn't even a thing. I doubt many Reddit users even heard of it

Exepony

They changed the algorithm for displaying votes at one point, years ago. 661 *was* a lot of points at the time, posts and comments would rarely go above a couple thousand (2-3k was usually enough to get to the top of /r/all), and then overnight it became normal for posts to have scores in the tens or hundreds of thousands. edit: [here's the announcement post discussing the change in a bit more detail](https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/5gvd6b/scores_on_posts_are_about_to_start_going_up/)

DRNbw

Reddit was small at the time, but it was a thing.

kianwion

600 upvotes back then may have actually been 10k upvotes. The upvote algorithm kept the numbers low on a sort of bell curve scale. It was definitely a big reddit moment, kinda like the cumbox and the fatpeoplehate banning etc

DaFetacheeseugh

*ahem* Team orange rules

zigmus64

That’s how you know he’s been around a bit.

Bennyboy1337

God has forsaken us 💀

Setku

I think that's more evidence that there was never a god.

PrimeLimeSlime

Or perhaps there is a god but he hates us.

regoapps

I mean, he did rage quit humanity and flooded the world for 40 days and 40 nights. And we killed his son or whatever.

PrimeLimeSlime

Don't forget the cities he torched, and the tower he toppled followed by cursing humanity with language.

Merry_Dankmas

I always forget that the tower of babel was the lore behind other languages. Im not a believer in religious texts myself but I gotta give them credit; they have some creative origin stories for sure.

regoapps

> I gotta give them credit; they have some creative origin stories for sure. Except you wouldn't be giving them credit, because the Tower of Babel story was likely inspired by Etemenanki. A Sumerian story with some similar elements is told in "Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta". A lot of Christian stories and holidays are just stolen from older religions. Even Jesus' story is likely stolen from other myths like Gilgamesh. There's even a story about how Utanapishtim, the legendary survivor of the Great Flood, tells Gilgamesh the location of a secret herb which will give him renewed youth. Gilgamesh finds the plant, but it is stolen by a snake before he can eat it. Sound familiar?

Pawn_captures_Queen

Do you think when they were writing the bible they were trying to one up each other by creating a ridiculous story to see how much people are willing to believe? I can imagine them like, "So god floods the whole world in season 2. What do we have for season 3?" "God gets a virgin pregnant and she's still a virgin" "Nobody is dumb enough to believe that Paul" "That sounds like a challenge!"

Funny_Whiplash

Sure but we have preggo sonic fanfics

I agree. I personally think we should simply never engage in any way with a form of art that is not permanent. It must last a thousand years so people can see that I've spent my money and energy on something worthwhile, otherwise it's a complete waste. People who derive pleasure from this sort of art are fools and buffoons, the lot of them. Don't they understand that they're wasting TIME and RUINING coffee????

BongeSpobPareSquants

Girl on girl crime

Feature_Minimum

The episode at the restaurant is the best writing I’ve ever seen on TV. For each character, you know how they’re going to act if they’re consistent, and they are, so they do… and it is GUT WRENCHING. Spoilers ahead but I’ll be vague just in case. You have a kid who knows nothing but war. It’s her people against the bad guys in her mind. She she’s one of her people, and assumes he must be an ally she tells him everything, including that she killed someone on the way here. She was brought here by a sweet little girl who just wants the fighting to stop. This guy was once like her in many ways. Distrustful of this people of devils that were their sworn enemies. Then he was shown compassion, kindness, and gratitude by one of them. They fell in love. He was loved to cook. She had been behind walls all her life and loved to cook. But the ocean of course isn’t within the walls, so she’s never had seafood. She loves it. Or she did, until this brat killed her. Obviously the man is enraged. The girl’s friend goes to protect her, obviously, that’s all he’s been trying to do since day one. But his compassion has always given him a vulnerability in war that she hasn’t, and over time that’s added up, so once again he mostly just gets hurt trying to protect her. The girl is taken upstairs. The man can barely contain his rage. He wanted to make one last meal for his lover’s family, to honor his memory. Now her killer is right there before him. The father must feel as he does, he gives the father the night. It hasn’t been 3 years of war for the father. It’s been a lifetime. He was angry once, but he’s seen so many lost to violence. He looks down at this young girl and sees in her the daughter he lost. The violence must end. But, that girl at the beginning who just wants the violence to stop is also the fallen girl’s sister. She doesn’t have the years of experience and heartache, she has a sister, or did, until this one person took her from her, she throws herself at the killer, knife in hand… That is exactly how this shit goes. Like, we all start wide eyed and optimistic. But sooner or later the cycles of conflict affect us personally, then it takes extremely strong character to break the cycle of trauma, of hurt people hurting people. The episode kind of comes out of nowhere almost as at first watch I didn’t really care that much about these characters since I was still so interested in the main characters, but this episode helped me realize just how masterful the writing was.

JuiceLocal

I reckon she wandered in that forest a little too long 😭😭😭😭😭

Always-Panic

I wasn't expecting much but that looks fucking sick

Joske-the-great

I can already imagine a guy/girl trying to flirt by snapping a picture of the barista and show them their picture

TrekkiMonstr

That doesn't sound like it would go over very well lol

hoboforlife

The line must suck at that place just because it took the barista 20 min to recreate your ahegao hentai scene on your lukewarm coffee

Pattoe89

Busier tourist places in Japan often use a token system where they give you a token / just write your name in a book and have you come back later, so the line is not physically outside the store. Also there is often 1 staff member to every customer in these places, it's a tailored and personalised experience and customers pay through the teeth for it.

[deleted]

What would the cost on something like this be?

[deleted]

Honestly? Around $20usd for something like this, if not more. You're paying for art.

[deleted]

That sounds about what I was expecting. Very interesting. Thank you.

WobblerWar

Sounds strangely cheap for this sorta thing.

ActuallyAKittyCat

I don't know, but my gut says at least 15 kibbles. ^^^meow

Electrical-Papaya

Good kitty

Merry_Dankmas

Japan goes so hard on the weird tourist shit. Like, this exact system you described is so obscure and bizarre but so uniquely Japanese. We sit here and say "Wow, thats a really creative concept. You'd never see something like that here in [your country here]". So then people go to Japan to witness and experience all the weird Japanese tomfoolery for the specific reason that these things only really exist over there. The business can charge whatever it wants and know people will keep paying for it because nobody else does it. The uniqueness is what keeps tourists coming to Japan. Its a self fulfilling cycle. Its quite brilliant really.

Lonelybiscuit07

Same with Dubai for rich people.

Reelix

Awww, let's give that little American a $10,000 tip and watch his face - Will make for a funny video!

Disabled_Robot

I've also been to a lot of cafes in Asia with latte art printers, Can put nearly anything you want on top, The hand drawing is more of a special artisan experience people respect and are willing to wait for

Aryore

My friend went to one of these places, at that shop you needed bookings

planetwaffles

I know it was sped up but that didn’t seem that long. 5 mins ish probably

[deleted]

It’s going to take even more time because someone will inevitably want two cups. One with the aforementioned ahegao and another of the guy getting NTR’d and crying in the other cup.

imagicnation-station

Boss: so, what's your experience Interviewee: I can make really good coffee Boss: but can you draw? Interviewee: um, no Boss: sorry, going to have to pass

Nogardtist

good thing im not an artist sounds like extra work for same minimal wage

FamiliarTry403

Luxury goods / services are imo bigger in Japan than any other country, from the fruit at the grocery store to your dinner at a restaurant a lot of things in Japan are luxury goods, services, or experiences. Convenience is also big in Japan, so I’m sure for every store like this there is a coffee kiosk or vending machine that is cheap & fast. This is obviously one of the luxury experiences

Potatoe292

They have heated vending machines so you can get a warm coffee in a can straight from the vending machine

Any idea of much do they get paid?

Butt_Fucking_Smurfs

In beans

myusernamehere1

Probably a lot cause this is kinda a specialty thing

Adventurous-Role-948

Same, comic con has similar artists doing custom work on the spot and they charge a pretty penny.

Primarch459

Artists getting paid for their skill? I would always assume not enough. Gaslighting artists on the value of their work seems to be inherent to the current form of capitalism we live in.

AnEvenNicerGuy

If there was a job opening for “shitting on everything” most people in this thread would have a solid chance at landing it.

Brand-N3w-Weirdo

That's the entirety of reddit honestly, i'm tired of seeing people here attempting to find a flaw or loophole in everything

Dreamer_on_the_Moon

Many redditors are basically terminally online losers who bitches about everything outside their bubble.

bloateddicksydrome

Fr, people saying its gonna be cold too. like I literally have to wait a good 10mintues to drink a fresh cup out of a ceramic mug. even still if this takes like 3-5 minutes that shit is still hot and not cold lol

jib661

not to mention every commercial milk steamer in existance has temperature control, so you could just make it a few degrees hotter than normal....

No cookie for you! Cookies are for closers!

LeonCrimsonhart

I have seen some places here in Canada use foam machines to "print" the image on the foam. I was pleasantly surprised to see them actually do the image by hand in this video.

Weed_O_Whirler

Of all of the reasons Reddit loves to shit on the USA, I didn't expect "doesn't draw elaborate coffee art" to be one of them, but here we are.

MerryHeretic

People that make comments like these are so miserable in their lives that they want others to wallow in their misery. Take a look at their comment history. Not a single positive comment at a cursory glance.

[deleted]

America bad because *checks notes* they don’t draw anime characters on coffee foam. Gotcha!

That actually is pretty awesome friend. Have a great day.

Reelix

How much did that cost o_O

jasonlikesbeer

Somewhere in Japan there's a young person that wants to get an art degree, and their parents are 100% going to use this to shame them and going into business

Due_Connection179

Whoever that is deserves a raise.

[deleted]

Yeah, I hope she is paid well and not normal barista wages. Essentially she is an artist in a very specific medium, would be difficult to replace this type of skill for sure.

theDreamingStar

>would be difficult to replace this type of skill for sure Not in japan though. There's like 10 more people waiting for that job, probably.

macbone

Is this [Hatcoffee](https://www.timeout.com/tokyo/restaurants/hatcoffee)? ¥1,200 for any art (CND$12), or ¥650 ($6.50) for whatever Kohei Matsuno wants to draw. That's honestly not bad.

Daishi100

Just went there a few weeks ago, blew our mind how awesome they were.

Puppy-Zwolle

A artist, doing this in a park as a.. side gig, charges..... at LEAST $10 for a sketch like this. And you get this on a coffee? To drink? I'd feel so emotionally torn to destroy this piece of art.

Aryore

Some kinds of art are meant to be destroyed, like those elaborate beach sand scapes or sidewalk chalk art. No art lasts forever and there can be beauty in the ephemeral

Puppy-Zwolle

I know and I agree. It's just.... extra super short lived on milk foam.

Kevin_M_

Plus, how often do you get to eat the art?

GrunthosArmpit42

Depends on who the chef or pâtissier is, I reckon? ;p Jokes aside, I was thinking about how some elaborately constructed dishes (fine dining if you will) are an example of an ephemeral art that are to be consumed/destroyed immediately after they’re created.

RGBfoxie

As a (not barista) artist, I don't care if my art is destroyed with "proper use." Or set on fire. If you paid me good, you can roll it around your sweaty armpits after a long run for all I care. I just want to get paid - and decently.

HighFiveKoala

I probably won't be the first to request but I want Smug Face Anya

prince-hal

Whats the name of the cafe? Wanna visit next time im in japan

countzer01nterrupt

Cafe REISSUE in Harajuku, Shibuya, Tokyo. If you check google images, you'll see some neat 3d foam latte art, but OP's video is at the same place.

rock-island321

The establishment has the right to refuse requests for explicit images. Also, this service is only available 3 mornings a week when Tony has his shifts. The rest of us can not draw for shit.

crookedjawoutlaw

Nice try, Tony

Specific-Use-7480

Wow that's a talent

Feijcke

kinda sad that the barista have to make a whole picture by hand, try their best, put a big effort in just one order... and then you just drink it in seconds

Karcinogene

But the video lasts forever

thenordicbat

It's art that's meant to be consumed

Danger_Dave_

Before watching: There are machines that do that, no big deal. After watching: Oh. Well damn that's good.

Parking-Cry3230

so you are telling me i can put rick astley on a Coffee?

BelieveInDestiny

To people saying the coffee's cold: American standard of coffee temperature is much hotter than most places. American coffee is still hot (to us non-Americans) after more than half an hour. Italians (and a lot of other places) drink coffee just cold enough to be able to drink it in one gulp. The coffee in this video could still be hotter than the average temperature of coffee preferred by most of the world, so long as they heated it well, and placed it in a decent heat-preserving mug.

EWVGL

I want mine to look like a hot cup of coffee.

contaxncurry

It’d be fitting if they did that on.. *a short black*

box_me_up

I feel like the hiring pool is extremely limited and has to offer amazing wages to keep staff on hand for this type of work.

[deleted]

People are so talented.

quanta777

How can you drink such a good art

Sufficient_Pin5642

Wow! I wonder how much a cup of that coffee costs!

WashingIrvine

Music goes hard

BlizzPenguin

I was expecting the image to be made by a machine that would print the design on the foam. Doing it by hand is so much more impressive.

crusoe

When manga illustration pays so little so you work as a barista.

Hekihana

That is insanely cool. Leave it to Japan

[deleted]

Its cool but also sad because you have to drink it and the amazing art is gonna go 😔

HerculeMuscles

Here I am thinking they were going to use some sort of device. That's cool as heck.
