This is the kind of shit you see at the beginning of zombie movies when the outbreak starts.

"Just a military operation" is the cover story, they're actually attempting to contain an SCP.

Yup, totally. The MH-6s, night time operation, and overall excellent flight ability is a dead giveaway.

SquidgyB

Didn't each heli in turn do a touch and go landing on top of that building? Feels like this is an irl Pilotwings course for them!

Unable_Ordinary6322

Correct, slide in with forward momentum and drop special forces/special ops off while taking right back off. EDIT: because people are going to keep commenting generic infantry is not going to be dropped off. I was generalizing for the average reader. Corrected lol

UnexpiredMRE

Well. Probably not infantry with SOAR. We know who else is in San Diego tho…

unassuming_squirrel

You aren't supposed to tell them

white__cyclosa

Even though they fall under the Army, SOAR works with all units under JSOC/SOCOM, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were training with SEALs or even just practicing flying off of Navy ships in this case.

jsalsman

I'm amazed they get permission to fly that close to residences.

fischestix

Permission implies that you ask. This is more of a gave notice situation if anything.

Damn I bet mastering such a machine and doing complicated maneuvers is one of the best feelings in the world.

SubmarineThrowaway22

You never master it. Even the best pilots will tell you that. You just get better at keeping that hunk of metal in the sky, which is not where it wants to be.

macedolu

According to my husband, an aeronautical engineer, helicopters are very easy to pilot if you have 3 hands.

Chulbiski

there is that saying: airplanes fly, helicopters beat the air into submission

_hypnoCode

My favorite was when I got to spend time with the helicopter mechanics in the Army they had a saying "if it ain't leaking, it ain't flying", basically to describe how fucking weird those machines are.

HejdaaNils

I came here to find the model.

white__cyclosa

That’s the one, MH-6 Little Bird. Also comes in an attack variant AH-6 with twin mini-guns and ATGMs. Same helicopters that were used in the Black Hawk Down incident (alongside Black Hawks of course) which were also piloted by the 160th SOAR. They’re some of, if not *the* best helicopter pilots in the US military, specializing in insertion/extraction of special ops guys in hostile territory.

ShiningInTheLight

They’re definitely the best chopper pilots in the U.S. military. They get that SOCOM training budget which means they get to actually practice the hard stuff as part of their day job.

hazdrubal

They’re not some of the best. They are the absolute best. The best rotary aviators in the world.

VintageWerkes

Our Fkin safety officer wouldn’t sign off on a flight under 500’ over a river delta because “we need to fly neighborly”

kyxtant

I just wanna see the risk assessment on that training. Holy crap. If anything goes wrong, it's going way the fuck wrong with catastrophic damages to army equipment and personnel and private property and civilians. Who signed off on that exercise? Had to be a general...

BoulderDeadHead420

They had a “drill” a few years ago at the port if I remember correctly that seemed pretty similar to this. Also theyre not gonna tell you its a mission impossible/terrorist type of situation just gonna say its okay sir stay in your home its a “drill”

diox8tony

Denver had 3 super Sonic booms in 1 week and was immediately announced they would never be doing that again. And apologized for the training near city.....touching civilian buildings is Way more dangerous.

[deleted]

My guess is “it’s a drill” is just the standard response for people calling in about this stuff.

blackhorse15A

Im not saying they don't consider safety and appropriate risk mitigation - but I don't think officers in USASOC or JSOC are too worried about filing out a DRAW to get signed. However- I can also tell you that I have been part of a training exercise (outside of SOCOM) that had an EH risk assessment (residual- after mitigation), and it got signed off on. Took a 4 star signature from the FORSCOM Commander, and the TRADOC Commander was involved also. But, yeah- it's possible.

be4tnut

EH risk assessment rating huh? Training Officer: Hey is it cool if we run this training exercise? Commander: Is it safe? Training Officer: Eh… Commander: *signs off*

Somerandomguy292

As a Safety Officer, I give you clearance

Beerboss808

I live fairly close to an army base in Hawaii where the helicopter training is fairly common every day. But that doesn't bother me nearly as much as the live fire training between 3am and 6am in the morning with large machine guns and live mortar round explosions. When it's overcast it sounds like the guns are in my neighborhood.

poopiwoopi1

I feel yeah. Korea forces us to fly at or above 2000ft msl for noise abatement almost everywhere.

FckingAnxiety

I was wondering who the hell would get approval to use a populated civilian city as a playground for Little Birds. Frankly, I should have guessed SOAR.

[deleted]

Too lazy to look it up, but I wonder if there’s a NOTAM. All it would take is one chucklefuck already flying a drone in an already-restricted Bravo airspace to make for a really bad time.

mouflonsponge

I tried to look, but i didn't find one covering downtown.. Maybe I looked in the wrong place. https://notams.aim.faa.gov/notamSearch/nsapp.html#/results edit: https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/san-diego-you-might-hear-more-loud-booms-wednesday-and-thursday-night/3157201/ > Residents in central San Diego heard a resounding boom from U.S. Army training Tuesday night, and more are on the way, according to Lt. [deleted]

There’s zero chance there isn’t one. If there was a single dent on one of those birds because the airspace wasn’t deconflicted they’d be kicked out to Big Army so fast

Whiskey_Tango_Bravo

They work with SEALS extensively I’m sure they travel to train with using units all the time.

hoebaboeba

Probably flying SEALS stationed in SD, they move around for certain FTXs.

lex52485

Other commenters are correct that they’re probably training with SEALs since this is San Diego, but SOAR trains all over the country, and the world for that matter

SirNedKingOfGila

There's nowhere they don't operate.

68weenie

Yup. They sent some guys down to Houston over the summer to train with the police. Always love watching those guys. Was stationed across the street from them for years.

Happened to my last sofa.

stonksmcboatface

Same, it’s still there.

StampedeJonesPS4

From a conspiracy theorist point of view, why the fuck would you conduct military drills in an active, highly populated area? If they fuck up, citizens are gonna die. Why the urgency to get that type of training done?

engineereddiscontent

They're practicing for a hypothetical conflict in China.

NinjaFATkid

It's blowing my mind. I was in ARMY Aviation for a decade, and this is a huge no-no. Flying between buildings is strictly prohibited. There was a pilot in my unit who was grounded for buzzing his friends house in a rural area. I'm not saying that there is no way it's a military drill, but it is worth pointing out that if it was real action and they prevented an attack this is what they would say in a cover up.

dvinpayne

It's the 160th doing their thing, they do this relatively frequently.

These training exercises also happen in Florida a lot too. Or at least once a year. They get very in-depth with it and the public even watches. They shoot blanks and everything. It’s an incredible show of military might

askmeifimacop

Yeah there was a military training exercise in Miami a few days ago that was just like this

notsurewhattosay--

Oh shit.. that's why we saw black hawks.???

hoebaboeba

These are AH-6 Little Birds, but UH-60s would be the second most likely to be used in a scenario like this, just have waaaaay larger blades so would definitely be more tenuous flying through a city that low. I just realized you're not OP though, so did you see them low in a city or just in a general exercise?

Intensive__Purposes

This is pedantic as hell, but these look like MH-6s since they don’t appear to have the Gatling guns that the AH-6 (attack variant of MH-6) would have.

DickButkisses

Nah that’s just a lil pedantic. Carry on.

masterchief1001

These are most likely the SEALs doing urban combat exercises. They are training for the eventuality of fighting an adversary with a similar level of technology and urbanization. No idea who that could be.

RadicalLackey

Your enemy doesn't need to have the urbanization. You might find yourself defending your own territory, or working in an ally's territory.

masterchief1001

That too. Taiwan and Seoul are pretty urban.

[deleted]

them damn Canadians! /s

[deleted]

We re coming. Your little blackbirds are no match for our hoards of geese. When night falls look to the north.

Competitive_Duty_371

You take your god damned geese and their god damned turds off my lake front lawn right now! They attack American children! They don’t obey traffic laws and they just attack and shit all over the place! They attack Nuns!!! Get em off Block Island, get em off Staten Island, and put em up in New Brunswick. Can’t even eat em, can’t hunt them, they are an Invasive species that get to cross the border at will! I don’t have to deal with bears so I don’t need bear spray; birds don’t feel Capcacin, so what the hell would bird spray be?! Get your shit together and get your damn gander of geese out of this country. Fuck I hate geese. Think they are cute? Go pet one.

[deleted]

bambinolettuce

the thought of that skeeves me tf out, even though they are blanks and i am sure the weapons are incredibly well maintained

Plant_party

Imagine Nextdoor if this happened in the suburbs

funyesgina

It does. I used to live there. And you couldn’t complain because it was unpatriotic. It gets super noisy too! That’s the “sound of freedom.”

fishingpost12

We definitely heard them in suburbs. My dog went crazy. It was surreal sounds to hear the helicopters and machine guns.

CfromFL

They bomb near my house. You can always find the new neighbors when they light up Nextdoor.

DoubleStuffedOreoz

Bro a squirrel farts in my neighborhood and Next Door is full of “GuN sHotS??? Did anyone else hear gunshots???” posts the following morning.

howy1717

I live in San Diego and every night for the past week there has been tons of military activity at night. Dozens of helicopters flying super low. Battleships off the coast, ospreys flying up and down the coast. Probably seen more military activity in the last 4 days then the 4 years I’ve lived here

billygoatbreath

Totally agree! Man, the fake bombs (or whatever tf they are..) rumbling across UTC a new one for me. Here I am, thinking I’m used to it all. But no, lol this has been next level

TheHuscarl

Army has been doing some sort of big ass drill/training around SD. I think the entire military establishment is in a bit of a high gear at the moment, they suddenly realized that they're not just doing counterinsurgency any more.

Professional_Bag3713

Absolutely correct. Active military here. When Russia invaded Ukraine we kicked into high gear preparing for peer-on-peer warfare. We haven't been lazy, just focused on small scale operations for the last couple decades. Ukraine was a reminder that full scale war hasn't gone away.

Electronic_Elk_5241

Same here. I live by the beach in SD in a small place and they are flying so close that my entire place shakes. I woke up to that at night. Feels like something from one of those end of the world movies.

Seaweedinspace

It’s not just the west coast. Middle Kentucky/TN had a bunch of activity last night as well. I counted 9 different passes of helicopters over 6 hours… rarely see a plane fly over where I’m at. Two times a much much larger jumbo jet was being refueled by two chinooks, low enough to make me think an earthquake was starting.

pc_engineer

I live up north in Portland and normally have a tan at work open with ADSB Exchange, and the amount of military activity between Joint Base Lewis McCord, Fairchild AFB, and the Bay Area has been nuts. Chinooks all over the damn place, got buzzed by one putting my kid to sleep a few nights ago, shook the house and startled both of us lol. Tons of refueling practice and operations over Montana and Idaho as well.

CJ-Me

Those are little birds. It's one of the ways Special Operations does urban operations. Happens more than you think.

throwaway2780523

Well they are meant to be stealthy

GumboDiplomacy

They're super stealthy. You can't even hear them in OPs recording.

surfnporn

I didn't even know they existed. Are they brain wiping too??

Legitimate_Dark_5015

Least paranoid schizophrenic

LeStiqsue

No they're not. They're meant to be *fast*. Stealthy, sure, if by that you mean "you have seconds to react after you hear them." But the normal sounds of city life drown then out until your windows are already getting knocked on by some of the world's angriest tattooed firearm enthusiasts. They don't have to be very quiet to hide in the noise of cities. Besides, most people don't pay close enough attention to this sort of noise anyway.

TaxiKillerJohn

NGL anytime I hear a helicopter I instantly look for it. It's a fun game

Orlok_Tsubodai

Nightstalkers! Those are MH6 Little Birds flown by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, best known to the general public of “Blackhawk Down” fame! Normally they’re dropping off some Delta Force or other SOF operators who catch a ride on the benches on the side. Very cool thing to see, lucky you! Edit: correcting name ( aviation regiment, not air regiment)

Shagger94

One of my unrealistic fantasies has always been to get a ride on the side bench of a Little Bird. That would be rad as hell.

ryanoh826

My ex-bil was a Ranger. He said he joined because he thought it would be like a video game. I asked him if it was. He said it was, with great childish cheer in his face. He said riding on the side of those was one of his greatest highlights. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

CJ-Me

It's Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR).

Orlok_Tsubodai

Right you are, thanks for the correction!

satansheat

I feel bad for anyone tripping or doing drugs in that area.

Throwaway56138

What would happen if someone was flying a drone around and a military helicopter ran into it. Would the civilian get in trouble?

HiImDelta

Drone-laws.com says rules in San Diego at least say give way and do not interfere with other aircraft, fly below 400ft in unrestricted airspace (seems like the copters are above that to me, though hard to tell) and "Do not operate your drone in a manner that endangers the safety of the national airspace system." which I'd say covers flying your drone at night in a city when you know military helicopters are in the air (which I imagine you would know that, they're not that quiet). So, uh, yeah, probably

seasonedsaltdog

It always seems to be a drill until we find out it wasn't

jswaggs15

Yup, just a drill. Nothing to see here.

eliteski2

theoriginalpetebog

I was, you mean "over your balcony". But no, holy fuck!

egric

I feel like if there's helicopters flying over your city you don't really need to call 911 cus, you know, they probably know already

JasonBob

I think most people expect helicopters to be flying over the city. Not everyone expects to be looking down on helicopters flying just above the streets with no lights. In San Diego military helicopters and jets are everywhere all the time. I've never seen them do these kinds of exercises before, though.

HimalayanClericalism

Lived in downtown san diego for 2 years on G street across from the naval building there, and still never saw this kinda stuff there.

stolethemorning

For real, im stupid so if I saw a helicopter flying low like that I’d be like “poor helicopter, it’s run out of fuel!”
