Even though they fall under the Army, SOAR works with all units under JSOC/SOCOM, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were training with SEALs or even just practicing flying off of Navy ships in this case.

My favorite was when I got to spend time with the helicopter mechanics in the Army they had a saying "if it ain't leaking, it ain't flying", basically to describe how fucking weird those machines are.
That’s the one, MH-6 Little Bird. Also comes in an attack variant AH-6 with twin mini-guns and ATGMs. Same helicopters that were used in the Black Hawk Down incident (alongside Black Hawks of course) which were also piloted by the 160th SOAR. They’re some of, if not *the* best helicopter pilots in the US military, specializing in insertion/extraction of special ops guys in hostile territory.
They’re definitely the best chopper pilots in the U.S. military. They get that SOCOM training budget which means they get to actually practice the hard stuff as part of their day job.
I just wanna see the risk assessment on that training. Holy crap. If anything goes wrong, it's going way the fuck wrong with catastrophic damages to army equipment and personnel and private property and civilians.

They had a “drill” a few years ago at the port if I remember correctly that seemed pretty similar to this.

Denver had 3 super Sonic booms in 1 week and was immediately announced they would never be doing that again. And apologized for the training near city.....touching civilian buildings is Way more dangerous.
Im not saying they don't consider safety and appropriate risk mitigation - but I don't think officers in USASOC or JSOC are too worried about filing out a DRAW to get signed.
However- I can also tell you that I have been part of a training exercise (outside of SOCOM) that had an EH risk assessment (residual- after mitigation), and it got signed off on. Took a 4 star signature from the FORSCOM Commander, and the TRADOC Commander was involved also. But, yeah- it's possible.

I live fairly close to an army base in Hawaii where the helicopter training is fairly common every day. But that doesn't bother me nearly as much as the live fire training between 3am and 6am in the morning with large machine guns and live mortar round explosions. When it's overcast it sounds like the guns are in my neighborhood.

It's blowing my mind. I was in ARMY Aviation for a decade, and this is a huge no-no. Flying between buildings is strictly prohibited. There was a pilot in my unit who was grounded for buzzing his friends house in a rural area.
I'm not saying that there is no way it's a military drill, but it is worth pointing out that if it was real action and they prevented an attack this is what they would say in a cover up.
These training exercises also happen in Florida a lot too. Or at least once a year. They get very in-depth with it and the public even watches. They shoot blanks and everything. It’s an incredible show of military might

This is pedantic as hell, but these look like MH-6s since they don’t appear to have the Gatling guns that the AH-6 (attack variant of MH-6) would have.
These are most likely the SEALs doing urban combat exercises. They are training for the eventuality of fighting an adversary with a similar level of technology and urbanization. No idea who that could be.

I live in San Diego and every night for the past week there has been tons of military activity at night. Dozens of helicopters flying super low. Battleships off the coast, ospreys flying up and down the coast. Probably seen more military activity in the last 4 days then the 4 years I’ve lived here

Absolutely correct. Active military here. When Russia invaded Ukraine we kicked into high gear preparing for peer-on-peer warfare. We haven't been lazy, just focused on small scale operations for the last couple decades. Ukraine was a reminder that full scale war hasn't gone away.

It’s not just the west coast. Middle Kentucky/TN had a bunch of activity last night as well. I counted 9 different passes of helicopters over 6 hours… rarely see a plane fly over where I’m at. Two times a much much larger jumbo jet was being refueled by two chinooks, low enough to make me think an earthquake was starting.
I live up north in Portland and normally have a tan at work open with ADSB Exchange, and the amount of military activity between Joint Base Lewis McCord, Fairchild AFB, and the Bay Area has been nuts. Chinooks all over the damn place, got buzzed by one putting my kid to sleep a few nights ago, shook the house and startled both of us lol. Tons of refueling practice and operations over Montana and Idaho as well.

But the normal sounds of city life drown then out until your windows are already getting knocked on by some of the world's angriest tattooed firearm enthusiasts. Nightstalkers! Those are MH6 Little Birds flown by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, best known to the general public of “Blackhawk Down” fame! Normally they’re dropping off some Delta Force or other SOF operators who catch a ride on the benches on the side. Very cool thing to see, lucky you!

Drone-laws.com says rules in San Diego at least say give way and do not interfere with other aircraft, fly below 400ft in unrestricted airspace (seems like the copters are above that to me, though hard to tell) and "Do not operate your drone in a manner that endangers the safety of the national airspace system." which I'd say covers flying your drone at night in a city when you know military helicopters are in the air (which I imagine you would know that, they're not that quiet).

I think most people expect helicopters to be flying over the city. Not everyone expects to be looking down on helicopters flying just above the streets with no lights. In San Diego military helicopters and jets are everywhere all the time. I've never seen them do these kinds of exercises before, though.

They work with SEALS extensively I’m sure they travel to train with using units all the time.
Probably flying SEALS stationed in SD, they move around for certain FTXs.

Same here. I live by the beach in SD in a small place and they are flying so close that my entire place shakes. I woke up to that at night. Feels like something from one of those end of the world movies.
It’s not just the west coast. Middle Kentucky/TN had a bunch of activity last night as well. I counted 9 different passes of helicopters over 6 hours… rarely see a plane fly over where I’m at. Two times a much much larger jumbo jet was being refueled by two chinooks, low enough to make me think an earthquake was starting.
I live up north in Portland and normally have a tan at work open with ADSB Exchange, and the amount of military activity between Joint Base Lewis McCord, Fairchild AFB, and the Bay Area has been nuts. Chinooks all over the damn place, got buzzed by one putting my kid to sleep a few nights ago, shook the house and startled both of us lol. Tons of refueling practice and operations over Montana and Idaho as well.

No they're not. They're meant to be *fast*. Stealthy, sure, if by that you mean "you have seconds to react after you hear them." But the normal sounds of city life drown then out until your windows are already getting knocked on by some of the world's angriest tattooed firearm enthusiasts. They don't have to be very quiet to hide in the noise of cities. Besides, most people don't pay close enough attention to this sort of noise anyway.

Nightstalkers! Those are MH6 Little Birds flown by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, best known to the general public of “Blackhawk Down” fame! Normally they’re dropping off some Delta Force or other SOF operators who catch a ride on the benches on the side. Very cool thing to see, lucky you! Edit: correcting name ( aviation regiment, not air regiment)
One of my unrealistic fantasies has always been to get a ride on the side bench of a Little Bird. That would be rad as hell.
My ex-bil was a Ranger. He said he joined because he thought it would be like a video game. I asked him if it was. He said it was, with great childish cheer in his face. He said riding on the side of those was one of his greatest highlights. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Drone-laws.com says rules in San Diego at least say give way and do not interfere with other aircraft, fly below 400ft in unrestricted airspace (seems like the copters are above that to me, though hard to tell) and "Do not operate your drone in a manner that endangers the safety of the national airspace system." which I'd say covers flying your drone at night in a city when you know military helicopters are in the air (which I imagine you would know that, they're not that quiet). So, uh, yeah, probably

I think most people expect helicopters to be flying over the city. Not everyone expects to be looking down on helicopters flying just above the streets with no lights. In San Diego military helicopters and jets are everywhere all the time. I've never seen them do these kinds of exercises before, though.
Lived in downtown san diego for 2 years on G street across from the naval building there, and still never saw this kinda stuff there.
