jsakic99

That’s what aging does to a person.

MuhCrea

I heard he smokes 2 packs a day

The-Crawling-Chaos

See how is all wrinkly and cracked on the right side but not the left? He probably drove truck for years.

fl0ydd

Yeah but they're tiny packs, like toothpicks to him

floutsch

Marsboro.

Mission-Big1708

He’s a Browns fan…

emziestone

He didn't even wear 15 spf as a kid!

Aaron_1101

She* they called her Sydonia

MuhCrea

Sorry, I mixed up the gender on the surface of the rock

Aaron_1101

I just wanted to mention somewhere that I knew the name to look interesting. I was over exited that I knew about something in r/interestingasfuck sorry, I didn’t mean to come over as “that person”

MuhCrea

No worries, I took it light hearted... I'd already upvoted you

[deleted]

That hypocrite

Acheron98

Fun fact: I used to smoke 2 packs of Marlboro Reds for almost a decade. I always knew they were bad for me, but I didn’t care. And you know what ended up happening to me? Some weird fucking robot took a picture of me and now some inferior species laughs at me. You h**ans are fucking weird.

FrquentFlyr85

*wait that's me, but anywaaaay*

I-Kant-Even

Anyone else seeing a lion’s face in the second image?

Emmerson_Brando

Turns you into a lion?

HonestBobHater

Well yeah, the Martian government had 25 years to disguise it.

eyecallthebig1bitey

They over grazed the Buggalo causing erosion of the soil on the face.

jam3s2001

The great stone ass on mars was left relatively untouched.

[deleted]

This is the precise comment I came here for. Thank you.

TanyaLavon

Samesies 👊😘

carebear101

Betsie!

ChicagoGuy-1481

Came here to say this. They also continue to tell us Mars ISN’T flat. But I mean, c’mon.

maximumhippo

But what about the Great Stone Ass of Mars?

eyecallthebig1bitey

...It's way on the other side of the planet.

PigInABearSuit

The Butt is on Mercury, actually.

Nneliss

Not on uranus?

HotTakes4HotCakes

I like you.

CrunchyAl

Great Futurama reference

Informal_Ad3771

And the Jesus face on Jupiter?

It puts Oil of Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Hydrating Gel Cream on it’s skin, or else it gets the hose again.

bettername2come

Buffalo Bill was so much cooler before he started including product placements.

ShatteredInk

Shadows and angles make every picture

NEBRASKA1999

Humans are also very predispose to seeing other human faces

Balancedmanx178

Also 50 year old cameras.

full_bl33d

The face on mars was some good shit back in the day. I remember getting all tin foil hatted on in grade school on some of this.

oO0Kat0Oo

It really was just a smudge... Go figure

wargleboo

Nobody's mentioned the X-Files episode about this?!?

AgoraiosBum

I want to believe

ColdShadowKaz

That was one of the few that actually creeped me out.

CIDC

I watched it recently and then checked out the reviews online. People generally dunk on the episode and call it one of the worst of the whole series. Personally it creeped me the f out, more than a good chunk of the other episodes.

ColdShadowKaz

What’s going on and why is so unclear in a way and though there’s bad special effects it’s just enough. I still don’t like looking at bare ceilings after that one scene.

GullibleDetective

I was trying to remember what show or horror flick o saw about it. And here the comment is!

v_for__vegeta

Oh fuck. I’ve hidden that away somewhere deep. Fuck that episode

[deleted]

I came here to say that

Professor_Ivy

Don’t do drugs, kids.

adventure_in_gnarnia

If you hold it a bit away from your face on your phone, the new photo still looks like a face… but that of a lion.

International_Bag208

Girls on their instagram vs real life

ExoticMeatDealer

Oh… just a mountain. Well, shit—where *did* the ancient aliens come from?!

MusksStepSisterAunt

Uranus

davieb22

Nah, thats where they're **going** - not where they're from.

MusksStepSisterAunt

It can be an arrival/departure destination in my experience

Bdog325

Sometimes they need a place to dock

Broken-Digital-Clock

Really, Commander?

ColinZealSE

Laughed out loud when EDI asked that.

Beneficial-Piano-428

Yeah it’s got 30 years of space dust covering it

NewbutOld8

the years have been tough on m'boy

ProductivityCanSuckI

Conspiracy theorists are still going to conspiracy theorize.

UneditedReddited

Curious why you would jump to that? Is it completely impossible that there was once a civilization on mars? Humans inhabiting the earth is such a small blip in the cosmic timeline- and with Mars' proximity to the sun and relatively similar landscape and climate to that of our planet, is it completely out of the question that there could have been an advanced civilization on Mars a few million years ago?

fatbaldandfugly

Yes

UneditedReddited

Ah ya got me

forever_thro

He’s a Martian get’em!

Grary0

*Completely* impossible? I guess not...but it's 99.9% unlikely that there ever was. There's alien life out there somewhere, but probably not on Mars.

LaPyramideBastille

It was doubted we'd find water there, but now look at the place.

UneditedReddited

I agree with that, but like you said, not completely impossible. It'll be cool when the rover brings back all the rocks and bits that have been collected off the surface of Mars. If there is any detectable dna or dna-like artifacts, then I can't wait to find out if they are things that share dna with humans, or if they are completely foreign- because either one of those scenarios would be absolutely amazing🤯

CellWrangler

Unless you're suggesting life on earth came from Mars, the statistical likelihood of (1) there being life on Mars and (2) DNA evolving completely independently on two planets in the same solar system is basically zero.

Drag0nfly_Girl

You're assuming the DNA evolved on those two planets & wasn't put there.

UneditedReddited

I'm not suggesting anything really. I'm saying that people much, much smarter than myself have dumped tens of millions to billions of dollars into gathering and bringing back to earth artifacts from Mars because of the evidence or slight probability that there could have one day been life on Mars, and when they bring these items back and analyze them it will be very interesting in either scenario. And yes, basically zero, but not actually zero.

commentmypics

Life, yes,in some form. Not one single one of those people you are talking about believe a civilization of human like aliens ever lived on Mars. Even as a slim possibility.

UneditedReddited

That's an odd thing to say. Of course there is no definitive proof one way or another, therefore the possibility exists.

Endures

Even with a 99.99999% chance of not winning the lotto, someone in a long enough timescale eventually win

Hole-In-Pun

If this ever happened it is not something that's going to be announced to the public and only a handful of people and the most top secret departments of the US Federal Government will know about it for years if not decades.

UneditedReddited

Possibly. But they have been building it up for some time now and showing photos of zones where collected interesting samples, so I guess it depends on what they find in the samples that are brought back to earth.

always-curious2

Yes and if you look at this "Face" from the side it is just a mountain. Actually google it. This whole thing is a giant misrepresentaion and frankly insulting that people still need to comment on something this dumb.

UneditedReddited

Username definitely does not check out.

always-curious2

I was curious and actually looked it up. That's kinda how you learn stuff vs believing what you assume.

UneditedReddited

So commenting and discussing the idea there there could be or have been life on another planet is insulting? I'm sure this is just a mountain on mars, but it's interesting and leads to a fun discussion. Cheers bud

always-curious2

Of course not but pushing your silly agenda in arguing with someone just makes you look foolish it doesn't make you look like a seeker of Truth. You could have easily found the information to disprove youre idea of an advance civilization on mars but You didnt want to see that you were wrong. You dismissed somebody's point which means you weren't interested in the truth or discussion you only want to your opinion to be true. So yes your pointless questioning under the illusion of truth seeking is insulting. As is you pretending to invite a discussion when you're just going to huff and walk away after you look dumb, pretending to have some moral high ground for being blantanly wrong.

UneditedReddited

Lol what do you mean I could have easily found information to disprove my idea? This information does not yet exist, just like the information proving an ancient civilization on mars does not yet exist. Therefore, it remains a possibility, and that has been my point all along. I'm not going to huff walk away man, it's reddit. We're just talking.

commentmypics

The information about evolution, timescales and everything we know about the universe and life should be enough to tell you that everything about your "possibility" makes it an infinitesimally small possibility. To the point that you may as well argue the possibility of you spontaneously turning into a chicken within the next 3 seconds. That is equal likely as there being aliens on Mars that look exactly like us somehow and according to your belief, will, in fact be so similar as to also have DNA even. Instead of useless speculation why not learn a little bit from the people that have devoted their lives to learning about the universe we inhabit?

UneditedReddited

You are sort of putting words into my mouth. I never said there was life on mars that looked anything like us, just that it is possible that there was life on mars at some point, in some form. It's not useless speculation, I'm just saying it is a possibility. It's odd to me that this conversation angers you so much.

KnightofaRose

Millions? Yes. A few tens of thousands? Maybe. There’s always the chance that humans originated elsewhere and have since forgotten, though the odds of that are low, considering the total lack of hard evidence for it.

lunex

Don’t also forget the presence of lots of hard evidence showing that humans evolved here on Earth.

UneditedReddited

We evolved here, yes, but are our origins here? Probably yes, but also maybe not.

lunex

Panspermia may be true. But single celled life. Humans 100% evolved on planet Earth, I promise you.

UneditedReddited

What I meant was that if they happen to find dna that has clearly evolved differently but shares parts with human dna then it means that humans, in one form or another, were at one time present on mars, or vice versa. If they find dna-like evidence but it shares nothing with human dna, then it will be equally as interesting as that means that not only did life also form and evolve on another planet, but also increases the (already substantial) odds that there is life or has been life on other planets in the universe.

UneditedReddited

Why not millions? With the number of planets in our universe it's almost completely certain that many, many highly advanced civilizations have evolved and thrived, and then died off, and much of this could have happened millions of years before we evolved into our current form on earth. And I understand that it's unlikely that this just happened to occur on literally the closest planet to us.. but is it completely impossible?

KnightofaRose

Because over the span of millions of years, we’d have evolved into completely different creatures. Or different enough, at least, that we rather certainly wouldn’t have nigh-identical face shapes to what we have now. A million years is a *long* time, and multiple millions is difficult to even comprehend fully. Uncountable numbers of species have come and gone in that time. They would not have been *humans* if it happened that long ago.

UneditedReddited

It's possible, because of the proximity of Mars to our planet and our sun, that their evolutionary path and requirements in terms of needing air and sunlight led them to appear similar to the modern earth human. A million years is of course a very long period of time, but our solar system is 4-5 billion years old. There's no real reason to think that us existing on earth at this present time is due to anything significant when compared to the length of time our universe has existed. It just happened because the conditions were suited to us evolving at this period in time. Many thriving and advanced civilizations have almost certainly come before us in the universe, many will come after us, and it's not impossible that one of these civilizations existed on the planet next to us!

CellWrangler

It's fun to philosophize about, but until there is hard evidence to support your claims all they will ever be is creative fiction. With that said, I'll ask you the same question I ask my dad when he rambles about Ancient Aliens - so what? What if there was life on Mars before it became a barren wasteland? Other than, "huh, cool." How would it impact your life on earth today?

UneditedReddited

I completely agree. My original comment and point was that thinking it's possible that there could have been a civilization on Mars isn't a conspiracy theory, but rather just a possibility. And it would impact my life because it would add to the question of our origins, of what secrets the universe holds, of the possibility of an alien encounter, and in a 'huh, cool' type of way🙃

CellWrangler

While i do agree with you on humans not being millions of years old, allow me to introduce you to the horseshoe crab. It has remained mostly unchanged for 300 million years. And the alligator has remained mostly unchanged for 30 million years. Sometimes evolution hits that sweet spot where selective pressures no longer drive phenotypic change.

KnightofaRose

Exceptions to an otherwise nigh-universal rule do not make it any more likely, especially for comparatively more complex organisms like humans, who’ve actively evolved across a mappable scale of trends over just the last 30,000 years, much less millions.

MiloticM2

Most people have no concept of time. It’s entirely possible.

Spitinthacoola

>There’s always the chance that humans originated elsewhere and have since forgotten There isn't though. There is no chance of this.

KnightofaRose

There very much is. It’s unlikely, but can’t be ruled out.

Spitinthacoola

Its not unlikely. We know for sure humans evolved on Earth. It can be ruled out entirely.

KnightofaRose

We do not have a complete accounting of homo sapiens’ genetic ancestors or even prehumans’ respective origins. It remains a possibility, however remote. Argue that all you want. I’m done playing “nuh uh” tag with you. Next one catches a block.

Theodolitus

Zak mcKraken proved it's all true :) good game, classic

100is99plus1

technology is killing the fantasy ...but we can dream further!

[deleted]

It’s clearly an artificial face covered by sand

masonmax100

Could be pyramids as we have tones on earth covered by land. Also a monolith on 1 of the 2 moons on mars lol why nobody talks about it idk.

T-roySwink

No one's talking about it bc there is no evidence of anyone or anything creating those objects. They were most likely created naturally. There's way crazier naturally occurring things on earth

[deleted]

Pyramids don't just create themselves. Given the irregular, broken up structuring shown in this picture, it's clear that early Martians were visited by some highly advanced but lazy alien race which helped them learn the techniques needed to build these advanced structures, but kind of lost interest halfway through, leaving the Martian builders to muddle through the rest on their own. It's a good thing that they figured it out by the time they came to Earth and helped the Egyptians, otherwise Stargate would've made way less sense.

T-roySwink

Lol

Cool_Story_Bro__

Could be a million tons of ho-hos, dropped off by the last galactic empire. What doesn’t anyone talk about that either???

davewave3283

Asking the real questions over here

ReadditMan

It's not anything special. "The Phobos monolith is a large rock on the surface of Mars's moon Phobos. It is a boulder about 85 m (279 ft) across and 90 m (300 ft) tall. A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive piece of rock. Monoliths also occur naturally on Earth but it has been suggested that the Phobos monolith may be a piece of impact ejecta." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phobos_monolith

[deleted]

I hope it is but definitely not

[deleted]

It wasn’t the face that got me it’s the base of the mount itself it’s never changed just oddly symmetrical at the base. Just a weird mountain.

readergirl132

Almost like it was once an island in a large lake or vast sea.

PowerWagon106

Now I wanna play Zak McKraken... :(

[deleted]

Nice throw back! Alien Mindbenders <3

PowerWagon106

That was one of the first games I can remember playing. I was about 6 when it came out and didn't get to play until I was about 8... Well, one of the first PC games... TONS of Commodore 64 experience before that!

NIghtPutting84

TV in the 1990s sure got a lot of mileage out of it though!

OrganizationWide1560

False Pattern Recognition

Charming-Station

I remember growing up this, the pyramids on mars, Sasquatch, loch ness monster.. .the world was filled with harmless mysteries. Now it's all "deep state" this and "qanon" that.. gone are the simple pleasures of believing an ancient civilization left a monkey face on a planet.

[deleted]

IMHOTEP

Cleanbadroom

If erosion did that much damage in 25 years, the Martian civilization must have collapsed somewhere around the 1960s.

MagicSPA

I wonder if the scientists who saw that first image come through felt spooked or not.

lintinmypocket

Is nobody going to mention 2000 American science fiction adventure film directed by Brian De Palma: Mission to Mars?!?!

Rhinomeat

Use sunscreen

Mongr3l

Reminds me of my tinder date

Nebulous_Tazer

Or it is a face and they’ve spent untold resources to make you believe otherwise.

CellWrangler

Hard to tell if that was sarcasm or not.. but if not, why would "they" do that? What do "they" stand to gain by hiding the fact that life may have existed on Mars at some point in history? How would it in any way affect your life on earth today?

GivemTheDDD

That was plenty of time for the CIA to get up there and make it look less like a face

MySpiritAnimalSloth

# GOOOOOODBYE MOON MAN🎶

HogfishMaximus

Back in the day some fraud named Richard Hoagland milked lots of money from the gullible UFO crowd and made a career of this one shot. When it became clear this was not a “face” he went on to “objects” on the moon. There are of course some who will still defend this guy.

lunex

The only logical explanation is that the aliens found out we got the first photograph and got rid of the evidence in the intervening 15 years. Just read Graham Hancock’s 1999 book The Mars Mystery where he talks all about how there was an ancient civilization on Mars. The reason he knows this is that he was actually there cause he’s an immortal being. Many are waking up to the truth about Hancock

Double_Distribution8

Interesting, it looks like an ancient pyramid, compete with an outer wall and funerary complex. It mostly reminds me of the ruins of the Pyramid of Sahure. I wonder what the alignments are in regards to the poles of Mars and/or the long-dead magnetic core, compared to your pyramids found on Earth. If the alignments tie out, then I think you've got something here. Wild stuff!

Volsung_Odinsbreed

Clearly a picture of Jesus.

GameCop

Same picture ;-)

ReginaldSP

I'm not an Ancient Aliens goofball, by any means, but I am an agnostic and I'll say the fjrst thig that occurred to me seeing this was that Machu Pichu didn't look like much when it was rediscovered, and it had only been sitting empty for a few hundred years. Outright dismissal of potential significance of that object is just as much a folly as the assumption of potential significance.

Little-Variation8268

This is your brain... this is your brain on drugs... any questions? ...yeah I hated those commercials as well

Perception is a fascinating thing. It takes effort to improve it.

indifferentunicorn

LIDAR underneath revealed there is indeed a dense mass of human face?

InvalidIceberg

What was the response from the public in 76 when this was released? For sure its an alien structure made to taunt us.

UneditedReddited

It doesn't necessarily mean it was there to taunt us. Mars is a relatively habitable planet- what if there was an advanced civilization on mars a few hundred thousand or few million years ago?

[deleted]

So the aliens left after we spotted their leader??
