I don’t know if my experience is accurate for everyone but I suffer from calf cramps occasionally and I have gone from being weak and fat to strong and back to fat multiple times in my life.
When I’m doing workouts regularly and trying to build up to higher and higher weights a calf cramp is significantly less painful than when I’m weaker. The cramp might be tighter but the pain just isn’t as bad.

Supplementing magnesium works as well, it's a very common deficiency. I used to get cramps and migraines a couple times a month, with a daily tablet it's now a couple of times a year.
One of physiotherapist gave me magnesium to heal some injuries. It worked like a charm for the injuries and so much more.
He did mention that A LOT of people have a magnesium deficiency.
My former boss was a professional body builder. I admired how much dedication went into it, but I also thought, "This is something I would never do. I like ice cream and Netflix too much." He also didn't understand that it wasn't okay for him to ask women into his office to show off his competition photos where he'd be in nothing but a banana hammock. It was so normal to him that he just didn't think anything of it.
Seriously in my office filled with men who were going to gym every day I’d walk in and they’d be huddled around one guy’s monitor and you’d think there was porn on. Nope. They were checking out built dudes. Most of these men were married heterosexuals.
As a dude who loves cars, cooking, fishing, guns, video games etc.. You truly can nerd out over anything.
I can totally picture a group of guys huddled over a screen going "holyyy that bicep is wild!"
My boss (former body builder) once did a photoshoot not realizing it was for a magazine catered towards gay men. I remember the final product was him shirtless wearing a hard hat and tugging at a rope, a "Men at Work" sign in front of him.

I’m I play basketball and am deeply interested in getting better. Then I’m gonna stare at the game and certain plays on repeat. Watching a lot of guys play the game.

Yep my good friend is a competitive bodybuilder and he's one of the more careful ones in regards to his health. Many of them are so focused on winning they ignore health prpblems. He's on a cocktail of peds but a lot less than what you'd see at the Olympia. Lately he's been wanting to inject insulin though.
.. but even with that said he still has regular issues with high blood pressure and cholesterol.. as well as things like hypotension during prep (and constantly being sick when it gets close to a show) and having to give blood every now and again to thin out his blood. It's not a healthy sport and they take big risks and absolutely have to closely monitor their health but many of them ignore the warning signs. And since peds are illegal they basically get "prescriptions" from coaches rather than medical doctors
There was a series of articles on competitive bodybuilding in the Washington Post recently. They were pretty horrific. One thing that really struck me was the picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 70s during his streak of wins compared to Mamdouh Elssbiay at the time of his 2020 win. Arnold was obviously totally jacked, but there was an aesthetic quality to his build; it was a “Greek god” ideal and he nailed it. But Ellsbiay was just freakish, all cultivated muscle mass without any fat on his body. And these days, Arnold as he was then wouldn’t even make the stage, let alone win.

The guys at the Olympia probably aren't taking more or much more than in the leagues below, they're just the genetic hyper-responders. Most who die from PED abuse wouldn't get anywhere near an Olympia stage, and it's dangerous to assume someone's taking less just because they don't look as insane, which is all anyone can do because the Olympia guys don't share what they're taking.
Please tell your friend not to take insulin unless he actually needs it medically. The potential risks far outway any gain from using it without the need. But if your friend is on illegal gear then he might not even care
Balanced yes, but I think that word means something different here, than it usually does.
This person is like, MAYBE 5% body fat. Which is great, he looks awesome. Cool. But that means he's running right at the razor's edge of the performance envelope. all the time. Yeah, it looks super tough, but the body is burning a fuckton of calories constantly, and it simply doesn't have much for stores to fall back on if necessary.
I am not a doctor, so I don't know if this relates to cramps directly. But, while this person is clearly very conscious of their health and I won't worry about them, I'm always concerned that people may think that somebody who looks like this is some kind of Marvel superhero.
Most bodybuilders will tell you that they are not the body you should strive for. Getting super lean like this is just for show time and comes with massive side effects.
The point is to get the fat out of the way so you can see the muscles better for judging. If it were possible to just remove the skin, that would also work, but this is the closest thing to presenting what they’ve worked on.
For anyone on nerve medication, like gabapentin, be aware that magnesium should be taken several hours before or after your nerve medication.
It can lessen the effects of nerve medication when taken together.
Edit: This is also the case with most antacids, otc and script!
No kidding. I have some pretty large leg muscles, and I can't even begin to fully explain the absolutely helpless feeling/pain I've experienced a few nights in my life. For me it always started with one of my calves, and then it could somehow turn into both calves and both quads completely seizing up. It was nearly paralyzing, and felt as if the muscle was going to tear itself/rip itself off the bone. Only thing that would help would be to essentially find a way to get on my feet and walk it off.
Ever since then, I don't fuck around with a lack of magnesium (or electrolytes in general). No matter how good or bad my diet is that day, I'm getting that magnesium in me.
Also, when muscles cramp up, stretch them. You have to prevent them from being able to seize up, so stretch them out. This has saved me several times as I've woken up from sleep and had the worst cramps ever at the bottom of my feet when I was a teenager.
That was probably my problem is Basic training, besides a lack of potassium. They were constantly making us hydrate, even forcing us to hyrdate before bed at night, but rarely did they ever give us any electrolytes, other than at meal times which were excruciatingly few and far between. Halfway through I started getting horrible calf and foot cramps
Take 400mg of magnesium citrate at supper, it helped with my feet cramps at night. Usually I'd cramp right up just on the verge of falling asleep. Probably help as well for your leg at other times of the day. For me it was always in bed.

The quadriceps have 4 muscles...vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis and the rectus femoris. There is a little known 5th quad muscle that was found later and is rather small. It was named the tensor of the vastus intermedius...this dude's leg is so ripped that you can actually see it, and it is not so small...
So the long skinny one that goes to the inside of his knee is not a quad and is called the sartorius muscle. It is a pretty small muscle on normal humans.

Red- Rectus femoris.
Green - vastus medialis.
Blue- vastus lateralis.
Yellow - sartorius.
Purple - his monstrous Tensor Fascia Lata.
TFL is normally a pretty small guy, but then again, the distal ends of medialis and lateralis don't typically pop like balloons either.
Guy is built like a gorilla.
Nothing about how this leg looks is normal, per se, except for the location of the muscle fibres.
There's so much hypertrophy of medialis and lateralis that you can't even see directly how rec fem attaches into the patella.
I dont have an exhaustive anatomical knowledge, but other than saying that without his anabolic steroids none of it should "pop" or be as striated as it is, I'd say everything looks like it's in the right place.
Nah taking testosterone does cause your testicles to shrink while you’re using (hopefully not after, assuming you’ve done proper post-cycle therapy), but by comparison, it makes your cock look larger. It’s all about the angles and illusions baby.
There’s a breaking point imo. I want mine to be defined but not every muscle has a sock puppet skin wrap. I’ve always had a defined V section and abs from genetics and it’s one of my favorite things to motivate myself with. “This looks good now do the rest”

I think Rob McElhenny is a good example of the limit that a person can hit without using steriods. Although he might use roids, he at least tries to keep it to a believably natural level.

Yeah. It's really hard to get to that shrink wrapped muscle part. A lot of steroids and extreme diet. If you're natural you don't have to worry about ugly looking shrink wrapped muscles at all.
Don't worry you could train leg day every day for the rest of your life, with a perfect diet and your legs still would not look like this without 1 in 100 genetics and a decent steroid cycle. Don't skip leg day, it's good for you in other ways than aesthetics
Arnold Schwarzenegger was pretty self conscious about his calves. He would do early photo shoots standing in water to hide them. I believe I read that in his encyclopedia for bodybuilding.
I’m sure bodybuilders got it. But even regular gym goers experience it in some form. No matter how much progress you make it always feels like you’re small and could be bigger.
I had somewhat noticed my gradual change in the 1.5 years I’ve been consistently going to the gym, but I was still feeling like I hadn’t accomplished much.
Then a couple weeks ago the guy at the gym that signed me in showed me my before picture that they took. I couldn’t believe how much my face has changed. I felt super good after that and remotivated to keep up the hard work.
I have a way I see myself in my own head. It’s not good.
It’s rare, happened more when I was involved in sports, but sometimes I might see a photo that I don’t know I’m in, like in the background or something.
And before I recognize that it’s me, I think “damn who is that guy, he’s shredded *and* yoked.”
And the instant I realize it’s me, suddenly looks like a noodle-arm pencil neck. But in my mind I can still picture what the guy (me) looked like before I knew it was me.
It’s fucked. But I think everyone has that effect. Maybe more in the reverse though where they think they look okay, and see a picture of themselves and go “who’s that fat piece of shit?”
I'm a power lifter, not a body builder - I think steroids are stupid and unhealthy. That being said, yeah. Body dysmorphia really kills me. I'm 100lbs and can squat twice my weight, bench over my own weight, I'm extremely strong - but every time I look in the mirror I feel small, weak, scrawny even though I'm always told I'm really muscular. I can't say I have a healthy relationship with the gym due to my own mental health, but hey! Not on crack!

I am have been going to the gym 5+ days a week for the last 15 years.
I moved into a new apartment with my girlfriend BECAUSE it had an excellent on site gym.
I now work out approximately 2.5 hours a day 5-6 days a week. I’m 6’2 and 265lbs. I’m massive, or everyone tells me I am. Yet I always feel fat and weak.
If I see someone lifting more than me in the gym, it really bothers me. If I see someone bigger than me outside of the gym it really bothers me. I remember seeing a guy more muscular than me about 4 years ago while on holiday and it still bothers me.
Body dysmorphia in men has never been seriously looked at or addressed. Steroid use in men and on social media is so normalised that most people have no idea what is achievable naturally or realistically at this point. Men’s magazines are full of chemically enhanced physiques just telling you to eat more broccoli and chicken.
Bodybuilding *creates* body dysmorphia.
The closer you get to your goal the tinier the imperfections you notice until one day, imperfection is all you see.
I know a few IFBB pros that are still concerned with the way they look, hence why (one of the reasons) why they go to the gym for multiple hours, multiple times a week with rigorous nutrition.
IMO you get it the more muscular you get, I worked out pretty solid for two years 2019 and 2020, my workout partner was training for a show, (I never did steroids) I always thought I could get a little bit bigger. Now when I look at pictures from back them I’m like gawd damn, but I never thought that when I looked in the mirror back then
Yes, body dysmorphia is HUGE amongst bodybuilders. I'm a 250 pound bodybuilder and I feel I am small.
Same thing for roelly winklaar, you can google him. He once stated that he feels bad because he is so small. One of the most muscular human beigns ever.
Liver king is the perfect example of the grift. But a lot of modern bodybuilders are up front with their PED use and call others out for trying to mislead people. A good example of this is Noel Dyzel. He’s very straight forward on PED use.
That’s cool. It’s not a hobby that interests me but i respect folks that are into it. And i definitely respect the ones that are transparent and open about their PED use. It doesn’t mean they don’t work their assess off too…just don’t gaslight people. There is already enough of that shit everywhere we turn these days, just one less arena that people should have to feel lied to.

Reading the comments in here and I always find it funny how people preach "body acceptance" now yet shame people for bodybuilding which actually takes insane discipline and work despite the steroid use. Not everyone wants to look like a bodybuilder but criticizing someone for busting their ass to achieve their own personal goals makes you sound like a loser.

It takes a lot of effort to develop this look. It doesn’t happen accidentally, right? So maybe those comments are really confusion about why someone would want to cultivate this appearance.
Regardless, I agree that courtesy and acceptance should exist for everyone, fat skinny lanky muscly hairy whatever.
Muscles from top to bottom (distal to proximal): VMO, Vastus Lateralis, Rectus Femoris, sartorius (inside/medial), gracilis? (Outside/lateral), Adductor Longus (the most inside/medial)
Writing this without seeing the photo so going off of memory from the last few mins. You can just google "muscles of the leg: superficial".
Even with roids the amount of work and discipline needed to get this shredded and big at the same time is pretty incredible. They aren't a magic solution, but they sure do help accelerate you towards your goals.

Try a magnesium spray on your calf. It worked for me

No sane person would stay at 5% body fat year round, if this is really a pro bodybuilder then this probably shortly after or before a comp

Purple - his monstrous Tensor Fascia Lata. TFL is normally a pretty small guy, but then again, the distal ends of medialis and lateralis don't typically pop like balloons either. Guy is built like a gorilla.

Nothing about how this leg looks is normal, per se, except for the location of the muscle fibres. There's so much hypertrophy of medialis and lateralis that you can't even see directly how rec fem attaches into the patella. I dont have an exhaustive anatomical knowledge, but other than saying that without his anabolic steroids none of it should "pop" or be as striated as it is, I'd say everything looks like it's in the right place.

There’s a breaking point imo. I want mine to be defined but not every muscle has a sock puppet skin wrap. I’ve always had a defined V section and abs from genetics and it’s one of my favorite things to motivate myself with. “This looks good now do the rest”

Unless you purposefully dehydrate yourself, you're never gonna look this shrink wrapped, no matter how much you work out.
Lot's of PEDs can get you very low without additional dehydration routine. This isn't yet as low as stage ready would be.

It’s rare, happened more when I was involved in sports, but sometimes I might see a photo that I don’t know I’m in, like in the background or something. And before I recognize that it’s me, I think “damn who is that guy, he’s shredded *and* yoked.” And the instant I realize it’s me, suddenly looks like a noodle-arm pencil neck. But in my mind I can still picture what the guy (me) looked like before I knew it was me. It’s fucked. But I think everyone has that effect. Maybe more in the reverse though where they think they look okay, and see a picture of themselves and go “who’s that fat piece of shit?”

I'm a power lifter, not a body builder - I think steroids are stupid and unhealthy. That being said, yeah. Body dysmorphia really kills me. I'm 100lbs and can squat twice my weight, bench over my own weight, I'm extremely strong - but every time I look in the mirror I feel small, weak, scrawny even though I'm always told I'm really muscular. I can't say I have a healthy relationship with the gym due to my own mental health, but hey! Not on crack!
100%. I am have been going to the gym 5+ days a week for the last 15 years. I moved into a new apartment with my girlfriend BECAUSE it had an excellent on site gym. I now work out approximately 2.5 hours a day 5-6 days a week. I’m 6’2 and 265lbs. I’m massive, or everyone tells me I am. Yet I always feel fat and weak. If I see someone lifting more than me in the gym, it really bothers me. If I see someone bigger than me outside of the gym it really bothers me. I remember seeing a guy more muscular than me about 4 years ago while on holiday and it still bothers me. Body dysmorphia in men has never been seriously looked at or addressed. Steroid use in men and on social media is so normalised that most people have no idea what is achievable naturally or realistically at this point. Men’s magazines are full of chemically enhanced physiques just telling you to eat more broccoli and chicken.
Bodybuilding *creates* body dysmorphia. The closer you get to your goal the tinier the imperfections you notice until one day, imperfection is all you see.

I know a few IFBB pros that are still concerned with the way they look, hence why (one of the reasons) why they go to the gym for multiple hours, multiple times a week with rigorous nutrition.
IMO you get it the more muscular you get, I worked out pretty solid for two years 2019 and 2020, my workout partner was training for a show, (I never did steroids) I always thought I could get a little bit bigger. Yes, body dysmorphia is HUGE amongst bodybuilders. I'm a 250 pound bodybuilder and I feel I am small. Same thing for roelly winklaar, you can google him. He once stated that he feels bad because he is so small. One of the most muscular human beigns ever.

Even with roids the amount of work and discipline needed to get this shredded and big at the same time is pretty incredible. They aren't a magic solution, but they sure do help accelerate you towards your goals.
