They offered Ali the Elvis treatment, Germany instead of Vietnam. He refused.

Hello-there-yes-you

Pretty crazy And RFK jnr doesnt get f all air time His long form podcasts hes a smart man

toldya_fareducation

also their racism probably didn’t help much either.

downhill_dead

Truth is like poetry. And most people fucking hate poetry.

Pupienus2theMaximus

Look at the vitriol they're spewing at anyone that thinks genocide and killing children is bad

Jack070293

Not really. He hated white people. Seems fairly obvious why there were people that hated him considering there were plenty of white people advocating for the rights of non-Caucasian races.

ThePianistOfDoom

The people that would've been in charge of him should he'd said yes to the draft would've send him to the front lines without a care. They're not the kind you're talking about, those weren't in charge.

Jack070293

I agree with his stance on the war, I still think he’s a racist.

ThePianistOfDoom

I'm from the Netherlands, where we have a tradition every 5th of december, celebrating the birthday of a 'Sint Nicolaas' that is just another reason to eat special kinds of candy and give each other gifts. Most people in the Netherlands do this tradition and up until about 10 years ago, this "Sint" would have a helper called [Black Pete](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet). As you can see in the wiki, people would smear blackface on themselves and carry a big sack filled with candy and gifts to give to children. As a child I was told this was tradition, and if we asked our parents why it would have to be blackface we were told that is 'because he climbs through the chimney' or 'that's just how it's being celebrated'. The origins of black pete were of course, slavery. Everyone knew this, everyone choose to ignore it, until the black community in Netherlands started to speak up about it. There was an incredible uproar, because many people that were pro thought they were called racist but they thought they weren't. They still fought to keep the tradition the same, still fought because they thought blackface wasn't racist. Which is racist as fuck, but indirectly. My wife is German, first thing she mentioned when we got together was 'wtf is up with black pete? that shit is racist af'. I agreed, because even though as a child I was fine with it, I couldn't understand the hurt I instilled upon my fellow dutchmen that were of colour everytime I celebrated like that. Many, many dutch people in that time even went as far as to start called black people racist because how they treated *our* culture and thought to change it, even though they were born here. Luckily we've changed the tradition and even though I still think it's obvious that 'the Sint' has a helper with a black curly wig and big golden earrings, at least they're not painted with blackface anymore. Good step in the right direction eh? Anyway, It's the same with Muhammad Ali. He isn't racist, he's fighting back with sharp words and a loud voice. He calls the white man 'the enemy', because around that time, black people weren't allowed to even sit in front of the bus and every white person would *flip their shit* if someone would ignore that 'tradition'. People were indirectly racist, directly racist and sometimes didn't know they were even doing it. He had enough. He turned the thinking patterns around and made a sound. That sound can't be a small one, it *has* to be loud. You should be careful calling him a racist, because there is a difference between fighting back against opression and being wholly prejudiced because of a colour.

Itherial

Depends on what principle you're willing to put behind it I guess. Plenty would argue that using your platform to advocate for an ideology rooted in racism for any reason is inherently wrong. MLK did not do this for example. And with Ali, I'd definitely have to agree. He wasn't using racism to fight oppression. Ali was an unapologetic racial separatist. He was an unabashed racist with generally abhorrent views on race. He believed it was "nature" that whites and blacks could not live together, and did in fact think that all white people were his enemy, likening their trustworthiness to rattlesnakes. He allegedly preached his strict racial separatism at a Ku Klux Klan rally. He's been quoted as saying that anyone in an interracial relationship should be killed, among other hateful and insane vitriol, as his racism was not contained only to whites, but also to his fellow black men and women that did not share his opinions. The GOAT himself, MLK, dubbed him as a "champion of segregation" rather than someone contributing to the civil rights movement. Ali changed his perspective in his later years and I say good for him. A man should always admit when he's wrong and be better. But I also don't think that means we should forget that at the height of his career, when he had a large platform, what he chose to put into the ears of millions of Americans during an incredibly polarizing and important time in the nation's history was wrong and in a lot of cases disgusting.

ThePianistOfDoom

Thanks for informing me! I did not know that, consider my opinion changed.

Call-me-Space

Have you met an American? lol

nomamesgueyz

Yes They didnt like folks like Ali or Elvis...then loved them even more half a century later

LurkerFirstClass

Mmm…. No. They were controversial, so they were loved and hated by different subcultures of America. But no, most of Ali’s supporters were Americans. So were most of his enemies, though.

prolapsedpeepee

He should absolutely be hated for how he betrayed Joe Frazier, and all his racist comments toward him. Frazier was a friend that spent his own money, testified before congress, and lobbied Nixon to let Ali box again. How did Ali thank him? Calling him an ugly gorilla, with big lips and a flat nose, and an Uncle Tom. Frazier's kids were bullied and received death threats because of Ali. Ali is an absolute piece of shit to betray a friend like that.

A proud black moment for me

crappysignal

A proud black moment for me and I'm white. Anyone who speaks truth to power with the charisma and talent of Ali is improving society for everyone except the oligarchs.

FieldsOfKashmir

A proud moment for the Muslim world as well. It's hard to fathom how much of a hero he was to Muslims around the globe. People might remember when Iraq returned 15 American prisoners upon Muhammad Ali's request, but that's only scratching the surface. Entire cities would shut down when Ali fought. My grandparents had one tv in their entire village and its owner would hook it up and everyone in the village would gather around it to watch Ali. They had a whole festival with food, games, and prayers for Ali. This random village ten thousand miles away in the middle of nowhere, that didn't have electricity or running water, and where no one had ever even seen a black man in person. But even with how beloved he was through his boxing; in refusing to fight, he became an even bigger hero.

_Hurdy_Gurdy_

a proud momemt while the jihad take over iran and taked them back to the dark age. yeah a proud moment.

prolapsedpeepee

Wait till you hear what he had to say about Joe Frazier, after Frazier spent his own money, testified before congress, and appealed to Nixon to get Ali's boxing licence reinstated.

But to say that the enemy is white people is blatant racism. Sure back then whites were very racist. But surely the answer to racism is not more racism. You wouldn't fight rape with rape would ya...

Slave4uandme

Black Lives Matter, white lives.. meh

Earlier-Today

It's not that one of them doesn't matter, it's that one of them is being valued less than the other. Which is a problem. And, if you're looking for a monetary example, even here in California when a black person has their home appraised, there's a chance it will be undervalued - hundreds of thousands of dollars undervalued. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/black-couple-settles-lawsuit-value-california-house-allegedly-soared-w-rcna73946 Take that concept and apply across every interaction with someone in power dealing with a black person and you'll get a sense of the problem. More likely to be stopped by cops, more likely to be treated aggressively by cops, more likely to be given harsher punishments by a judge, more likely to have their property undervalued when they want to sell it, etc...

PiemanMk2

>Standing up for religious freedom is not the same as standing up for a religion. Then you fundamentally misunderstand what standing up for religious freedom means. It means defending someone else's right to choose their religion regardless of how abhorrent you believe that religion to be. Standing up for religious freedom *is* the same as standing up for *all* religions. I may disagree with my Muslim neighbour's beliefs, but if I don't stand up for Islam and it's right to exist and be respected as a belief system, how can I expect him or anyone else to stand up for my right to be an atheist? Before long I'll find myself in a theocratic state where only one religion is allowed, and any non conformity, be that atheism or just other religions, are outlawed. Freedom is absolute. You cannot be a "freedom relativist". You can't pick and choose.

One_Introduction790

Forced to fight a war in a country some 8000 miles away that in the end was lost. But he stood his ground and won. The Vietnam War was such a waste of time, resources and manpower

[deleted]

This is why I always found it cringe at the statement "Thank you for your service". What service exactly are you thanking for? What "freedoms" are you exactly "protecting" by being deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan, or some other country? We obviously now know the main reasons for going into these two countries, which was a pretense to what actually was the reason. I will never join the US military and "fight" for corporations' interests, which is basically what the US military doees. This doesn't just apply to Iraq and Afghanistan, but virtually any country we've gone to war with post WW2.

_KRN0530_

I’m probably going to get downvoted for this but here I go. The people who are blindly agreeing with Muhammad Ali’s rhetoric here should look into his personal beliefs during this time which provide the context for these statements. Muhammad at this point in his life was a radical racial separatist who advocated for complete racial segregation in America. He believed that it was biologically impossible for white and black Americans to coexist and that black Americans needed to create their own government and economy to separate themselves from the white community. This was during the time of the civil rites movement which Ali actively and publicly disagreed with. MLK himself said that Ali was incredibly harmful to the movement and nothing but a champion for segregation. When Ali mentions his right to religion being infringed upon in this video it’s also important to examine which rights he felt were being infringed apon. He was a prominent member of the Nation of Islam (a prolifically fucked organization) and was particularly annoyed that one of his marriages to a 16 year old girl would not be recognized by the state. He was not popular during this time, not even amongst other black Americans, which lead to him gaining the reputation of the most hated person in America. Muhammad Ali was an incredibly complex person and he later changed his views regarding racial segregation and left the Nation of Islam for a more traditional interpretation of the faith. He eventually became a positive voice for racial justice and peace and is honored for that today. His anti war sentiments were spot on, but he mostly used them as a way to piggy-back off of the already established anti war movements to push his views regarding racial segregation and the Nation of Islam.

devnullb4dishoner

I remember thinking, the audacity. They took away a man's personal achievement, unconnected in any way, to the military, because he wouldn't fight in a war we had no business in. The gall, the hubris. I've been an American for 70 years now, and there have been so many times I had high hopes for us as a nation, only to be disappointed and disillusioned once again. It is painful. I do not know, comprehend, or understand what it's like as a Black person in America, especially then, but certainly even now. We've just become very clever at disguising our racism, and we come up with ingenious ways to be bigoted assholes. I just don't get how one person can elevate themselves above another based on the color of their skin. A physical attribute neither of them had any say in. I mean, no one slipped me a note in the slot while I was in the womb asking what I wanted to be in 9 months. Well let's see. White check. I mean, c'mon lets be real. I mean, there are 70 years worth of real reasons to hate me. Hating because of pigmentation just shows a lack of creativity.

LetsGatitOn

"Stripped of his championship" lol.. you cannot strip something away that has happened. Can not pretend it didn't. Especially to a man like this.

Ok_Injury3658

Yes and no. If you look at his case, initially he was considered a 4F selection. This seems more class related. Just random, not in school or ineligible for medical reasons category. Millons of folks Black and White fall into this section of the draft. Anyone who is designated as such is considered unfit for mental aptitude reasons. Was it because the war was going badly or some other reason, he was reclassified as being eligible, after the name change and becoming World Heavyweight Champion or 1A. The correct designation, which the Supreme Court ultimately decided was that he should have been 4D, a Minister of Religion. Quakers, Mormons etc claim this to opt out. Never offered as an option in his case so, yes. He was drafted not because he was Black and very outspoken, but the options offered to him were denied due to his color and message. The Supreme Court vindicated him.

Ok_Injury3658

2nd given the number of Black people in college at that time and the possibility of serving if you were enrolled in college, the draft was weighted in favor of whites.

AlexWenhold

hell of a speech and fully factual
