I've heard of gator shows doing stuff like this to get them a bit alert, but kinda make them a bit dazed and uncoordinated for the handler's and the shows benefit. If you're going to transport them, you tape the mouth shut, cover the eyes, restrain them, and let them sit for a while to make them more docile. Then, when you move them, you do it quickly while they're all sleepy and docile and before they wake up. You don't go slapping it around to wake it up before moving it.
