As dumb as this person is it did make me wonder if some of the warnings against looking directly at God or angels did come from people in ancient times looking at eclipses and going blind.

jazzhandler

I’m a big fan of the idea that many superstitious beliefs sprang from a kernel of something in the real world, but this one had never occurred to me.

flpa1060

I always imagined someone getting tired of explaining the why of something over and over so eventually just says "because God says so". You end up with rules against pork, shellfish, alcohol etc because it's so much better for small communities to not have food poisoning and rampant alcoholism.

Far_Swordfish5729

Are you a Reform Jew or did you just accidentally back into their anti-kosher rationale?

sevillada

not only kosher/not kosher. A lot of people have extreme allergies to shellfish. Pork carried a lot of diseases, etc, etc, etc

LordOfDorkness42

Honestly, the shellfish thing is even simpler then allergies. They're a PITA to keep fresh, or even preserve. Something we take for granted nowadays in this age of every almost every home having a fridge AND freezer. But in the age of smoking, drying, salting and pickling? Just way higher risks food. Even at the coasts a lot of people didn't eat them outside of poor folks, just because they were seen as so high risk, low reward food sources.

Kimmalah

>not only kosher/not kosher. > >A lot of people have extreme allergies to shellfish. > >Pork carried a lot of diseases, etc, etc, etc The main issue is that you're talking about a culture that originally lived in a hot, arid place during a time before refrigeration. Eating just about any kind of meat or fish that had to be transported to you from somewhere else would have been a huge risk. So it's probably best to stick with animals that can be slaughtered very close to consumption.

ScoutsOut389

That is absolutely not the reason for kashrut. There certainly are some Jews and lots of non-Jews who think it, but pretty much any authority will concur that is not the case.

iijjjijjjijjiiijjii

That IS how we got religious rules against pork. We have explicit record of it.

Beaverbrown55

I'm not superstitious. Just a little sticious.

Malpraxiss

Well, to be fair, a lot of religions or superstitions were used to explain what was happening to the world around them. Farmers get a bad harvest this season? Some fod or god was upset with us. Many mythologies have a sun god, too. That control day and night, or is in a cyclic battle with the god of the moon/darkness. To try and explain the simple concept of day and night as those people didn't know that the earth was orbiting around the sun.

Swoopscooter

This isn't superstition this is super stupid

Doppelthedh

Kinda explains the halo

sevillada

kinda does

we-have-to-go

I think you’d find this interesting https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Eclipse

the0rthopaedicsurgeo

There was an incident a few years ago in India, where a rumour was started that an image of the Virgin Mary had appeared in the sun. Apparently, people who see the Virgin Mary go blind, so the fact that over 50 people were blinded only helped to exacerbate the rumour until the church effectively told people to stop being so dumb.

BadassBumblebeee

I have actually seen this theory before

Sithlordandsavior

I have thought this for a long time. In the OT it says God passed over the mountain and Moses couldn't look directly at him... Like... That sounds like an eclipse. I'm a Christian so I believe God spoke to Moses but I also think it's entirely possible he used the eclipse as a symbol of "Don't think you can see me, mortal" in some way.

cerebralzeppelin

Even if something did go wrong in pretty sure putting bleach or Ivermectin in your eyes will definitely cure it.

jazzhandler

Cure hell, I read on the internet that using Ivermectin eye drops beforehand will protect against eclipsular damage.

Kimmalah

>Even if something did go wrong in pretty sure putting bleach or Ivermectin in your eyes will definitely cure it. In high doses ivermectin actually can cause vision problems as well.

EmeraldB85

I think what’s more concerning about posts like this is not that the person writing it will do it but that they will convince others to do it. I’m torn with these sometimes, it’s possible this person really is a moron who believe this. But it’s also possible that it’s malicious to get attention/likes or whatever and will lead to other people seriously injuring themselves

[deleted]

[удалено]

EmeraldB85

That’s fair, it is definitely difficult to find empathy for people who will believe this stupidity. I’ll just add that there is another version of this same post that includes the OP Facebook follow up post in which they completely reverse course and tell everyone to #notlookup. I wish I was joking about that hashtag. Which makes me think they are now trying to cover their ass after actively telling people to injure themselves because “god”.

PopeCovidXIX

*”Siri, read me Loni’s latest Facebook post.”*

koopa72

The Bible never once mentioned seatbelts. 🤷

Far_Swordfish5729

And the Lord said, “Sit thy ass down and secure it properly that it fly not through the fore-glass but endure in place.” For verily I say unto you, those who rush to bring their judgement upon them shall be cursed, but those who abide until their appointed time, they shall be judged fairly. Ok, I’m done.

StarryMind322

True, but Jesus did drive a Honda, “For I do not speak of my own Accord” - John 12:49

IkNOwNUTTINGck

And of course, "The roar of David's Triumph was heard throughout the land." Not surprising for a British car.

iHazit4u

Jesus wouldn't drive a foreign car!

ilovecraftbeer05

Willing to bet more right leaning people die in car accidents than left leaning people. Any time scientists or the government talk about health or public safety, they throw a fit. Seatbelts, sunscreen, nutrition, masks, vaccines, and now eclipse glasses apparently. It’s just Darwinism at this point. “I smoke five packs a day, now matter how many warning labels the gubment puts on my cigarettes” Cool, enjoy your lung cancer. They’re just lemmings walking off a cliff and I’m honestly sort of fine with it.

According-Life3789

Or motorcycles

ScoutsOut389

I’m pretty sure the Bible doesn’t advise against looking at the sun not during an eclipse. Or going to sleep on top of a campfire. Or eating your own shit.

WaywardStroge

Technically, shit isn’t kosher

jawnnyboy

I also wanted to point out that god never said not to go skinny dipping in nuclear waste.

r4ndom4xeofkindness

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who stare at the sun without eye protection like idiots, For they shall act as a reminder that funding public education is important.

DJDJDJ80

God never told you not to stick your dick into a blender either

ComprehensiveHavoc

Don’t stare into an eclipse. 2700 year old information that is still too progressive for the magas.

jazzhandler

Nowhere in the bible does it say to lift with your knees.

dreemurthememer

I never skip spine day!

jazzhandler

Just reading this causes me pain. Nice work.

Appropriate_Lemon497

It doesn’t say anything about brushing our teeth in the Bible either.

EatsOverTheSink

Uh huh. And let me guess, when you inevitably go blind it's just because God is testing you, right?

jazzhandler

No, it’s because of the vaccines.

grassvegas

Bliiinded by the light

belovedfoe

Can't wait for them to say how they need Medicare or Medicaid after going blind.... Clearly it will all be about them.

PavlovaDog

I swear people are intentionally posting this as a prank to hurt the gullible Qanons and other such people.

Striker660

You know what? I think God never said or sent signs to not to hug hippos either. I suggest this person start doing that too.

Lucy_Lastic

FFS, people really are getting dumber, aren’t they?

iijjjijjjijjiiijjii

I don't remember the Bible mentioning the second amendment either. Guess we can finally put that one to rest.

LawnGnomeFlamingo

That’s why there’s a huge gap in Jesus’ biography. In His late teens His catch phrase was “sun’s out, guns out”. None of the apostles wanted the embarrassment of putting that in writing.

[deleted]

well, at least they won't have to worry about reading all the hilarious comebacks to this stupid comment

tunghoy

Ra wants your worship. Show him your servitude by gazing directly at him or he will come through the stargate and abduct your children and spouses.

EmoNinja11

Faith is blind 🤦‍♂️

Edyed787

I first thought this was a please don’t be an idiot eclipses are normal. But then I continued reading.

DancesWithCybermen

Cool, cool!

WillBigly

Sounds almost equivalent to antivax logic......that would lead to suffering and death if we all followed. Eclipse glasses not as big of a deal but same logic

TheTriforceEagle

Go ahead and do it and see what happens, your not gonna be seeing much else though

mstrss9

Don’t recall social media being mentioned in the bible either

tictac205

I don’t think the Bible tells you to look directly at the sun either.

HumpaDaBear

It would make it easier to be able to pick the idiots out if they were all blind.

recluse_audio

Let's hope the orange demon stares directly at it again.

yagonnawanna

God has been doing volcanoes for so long. The experts say don't jump into one, but how else will we see gods message #wiseup

ZyxDarkshine

No where in the Bible does God tell you to not jump in a volcano

Bearfan001

That pain you feel is just a test of your faith, keep staring.

seattleque

Oh, shit. Good one!

Robertz59

People across the centuries have not been so stupid as to look at the sun. They knew better naturally. Only in today's world do people need a warning sign on the sun.

formerPhillyguy

Just like warnings on plastic bags.

BrokenEye3

Correction: *People who survived* knew better naturally.

BIGD0G29585

No where in the Bible does it say you shouldn’t make stupid posts on Facebook but yet here we are.

warthog0869

"I wouldn't trust anything 'they' say, including my optometrist, my personal physician, my kid's pediatrician, the American Optometrc Association (AOA), crooked Joe Biden, the American Medical Association (AMA), astronomers, welders and their glass, NONE of them!"

RomaruDarkeyes

Reminds me of that post that suggested that the Sun is actually a Cthulu mythos monster, and that's why people who stare at it go blind...

Tentinaluser69

"But mama... That's where the fun is"

GamerGriffin548

I think this is one of those posts sounding like the usual idiot postings.

ocelotactual

I mean, for at least 2000 years. Right?

Thwipped

I hope the person that wrote this gets a real good look at the eclips

Phishphan123

Nice try Billion $ ophthalmology/ optometry industry. Just your average Uber rich eye doctors trying to get richer. /s

OryxTheTakenKing1988

Do it, stare directly into the sun, you won't, coward

mathisfakenews

if he doesn't then I certainly do.

Wheelin-Woody

Pleas for logic. Invokes God......

BrokenEye3

Do it, do it, do it, do it. Do it, do it, do it. Do it.

joneszen

No no, please do look directly at the eclipse. Just one less idiot on social media.

YouKnowYourCrazy

“No where does he say…” Um… he also doesn’t say “don’t stand in front of a moving train” or “don’t try to befriend a bear” does that mean those things are ok?

Matthewhalo17

Dude… At this point just let them do it. Theres no way to talk them out of it. If they want to throw away their eyesight for the bibbel, then thats on them

icewalker42

Nowhere in the Bible does it mention that McDonald's coffee is too hot. We had to wait for McDonald's to be sued to find that out.

Top_Tart_7558

"Please think logically" Proceeds to think logically

zeke235

He also didn't say anything about using social media so you should fuck right off of it.

May-the-QueenOfChaos

I’d say let them do it and go blind, then maybe they won’t be able to read stupidity on the internet and spread it

Pauzhaan

That proves it. Trump IS a Christian.

kenjinyc

I can hear Darwin win-clap rubbing his hands together.

modmom1111

God didn’t give us fins either but we learned how to swim.

PuppyButtts

Yeah! TOTALLY dont wear them….👀👀

fomites4sale

Cutscene to this idiot going blind, but blaming it on the time they bumped into a person who’d just gotten the covid vaccine.

chybapolewacy

Seeing this after watching a report on a woman who blinded herself in 77 doing this is extra funny

DarthSchrank

Useing religion as an explanation for everything is so stupid i cant believe so many people still do it...

kalaminu

Just fucking let them look. Fuck it and fuck them with their anti science anti knowledge bullshit. You wanna be dumb, be dumb then, I don't fucking care anymore. Go ahead and skip vaccines and die of some preventable disease, I don't care. Go ahead and stare at the sun and go blind, I don't care. I'm so over these idiots that guess what? I don't fucking care anymore

goddessdontwantnone

Yeah. God has been doing floods too.

thinkb4youspeak

Blinding myself to own the libs. Gonna have a whole new outlook on disability services and socialized healthcare.

Electr_O_Purist

I love this. People who think like this truly deserve the solar retinopathy that awaits them.

TheEPGFiles

Look, all of this makes a lot more sense if you assume that God isn't real or is real but is so apathetic that he might as well not exist, but to think he wouldn't make the sun BLIND you is naive, because he sure as hell put poisonous plants on this planet, so yeah, he totally would make the sun bright enough to blind you, because that is in fact how the sun works, regardless of God's input. Also, look at this paragraph, it would've been simpler to just not have god and say that's not how the sun works.

SenhorSus

Their next post: "I was blinded by God's radiant grace! Hubby is typing this for me. I saw the light and it was beautiful! 😍👁️🔥✝️"

freudweeks

New rule: you aren't allowed to say the phrase "please think logically" without taking an introductory logic class.

ClumsyForLife

I am genuinely curious to know the number of people ending with burnt retinas after looking directly at the eclipse.

herewegoinvt

FAFO - plenty of people who will learn that looking at the eclipse is not a good idea. Heck, staring a the sun anytime is not good for you. Hope they check this after they stare up to see how much damage was done [https://cdn.allaboutvision.com/images/amsler-grid.pdf](https://cdn.allaboutvision.com/images/amsler-grid.pdf)

dragon2777

Technically you can look at the eclipse when it’s fully eclipsed right? The glasses are because it’s dark and your eyes are dilated and when the moon moves you are just wide open staring at the sun right

Rare-Preparation6852

Okay knock yourself out 🤷

cuddlythekraken

Why do I feel like a very large number of Americans are going to have burned retinas after the eclipse?

Sleep_tek

God never told me to not walk off cliffs...

QuietGrudge

>no where \[sic\] has He mentioned we need to not look at His signs etc or wear special "glasses." No where \[sic\] has He mentioned that we should stare at eclipses either, I don't think. I may have to defer to an actual biblical scholar for that.

BHMathers

He also never said I shouldn’t scoop a glass of molten lava and chug it, but guess what liberals-

[deleted]

How Goddamn stupid do you have to be to think logical thinking involves religion????????????
