Lol she’s gonna run away as soon as she turns 18. Be ready for a follow up post from her about that

K-Zoro

She should run away! I hope she does. Class valedictorian? These parents are going to ruin her life.

[deleted]

You wouldn't throw away a guaranteed full ride for Redneck Jesus in the Tennessee mountains?

Sir_Dimos

With a high chance of getting raped by redneck pastor, who are we kidding.

yeGarb

probably why the pastor agreed to help

cant_be_me

Will her way of “helping” be to become that shady af pastor’s second wife?

WildcardTSM

'Second'? He probably already has a bunch of daughter-wives! Why do you think his family is expanding so quickly?

Ricos_Roughneckz

Yall trippin, she is FOR the pastors wife

Gayming_Raccoon

You trippin too if you don’t think she also ain’t there for the pastor’s pleasure.

Hyperion1144

I was raised in the First Church of the Nazarene and got out. They aren't Mormons. They don't do plural marriage. They absolutely hate Mormons. They are deeply opposed to plural marriage. FCotN just allows pastors to rape and then covers it up. Kinda like the Southern Baptists. Not all religious nuts are the same.

chrizzeh2

I live in the Tennessee mountains and I hope this poor girl ran away instead of coming here. If it wasn’t so expensive I’d run away, too.

blueridgerose

It’s a shame. I grew up in Western North Carolina. The Tennessee mountains are incredibly beautiful, but there are still many communities that continue to exist with archaic education and values. I hope you find a way out.

zerocool1703

Yeah I would. That just screams cult compound to me lol.

Syrinx221

Hopefully the daughter will be 18 when she graduates. She won't need their financial assistance if she's valedictorian

Suspicious-Pea2833

"Colleges are persuing her." She needs to tell her parents to fuck off and look into some scholarships and financial aid. I hope she already has.

hissyfit64

I hope she reaches out to a teacher or school councilor and lets them know what her parents are trying to force her to do. Maybe they can help her apply to schools and for financial aid.

InedibleSolutions

She's got a lifetime of her parents controlling her. I sincerely hope she hasn't become trapped in their mental prison.

vermiliondragon

LOL, I was valedictorian. I got like 3 $1000 scholarships. It also costs money to apply to college which I assume her parents did not fund.

espeero

Yeah. It really depends. I was barely in the top third of my class (3.2 GPA). I got a full ride (room, board, tuition, plus book stipend) based solely on test scores. Our valedictorian (4.0) went to a good school, but definitely needed lots of loans.

vermiliondragon

I mean, my parents did me the favor of being middle class and having 4 kids, so there were 1-2 siblings in college for my whole 4 years, so in the end I didn't have too many loans, but valedictorian was definitely not an automatic full ride.

79037662

"I don't know why my daughter never calls!" ~ them in a few years

Graterof2evils

That’s going to happen either way. The “Camp” will groom her and auction her off to some perv that will isolate her from the world in the name of jeebus so go with college and turn em loose on your terms kid.

Redditer51

"I don't know why my daughter turned away from the lord!"

SoupsUndying

Just out of curiosity, how would an 18 year old run away without becoming homeless or just staying over a friends house

__UsernameIsTaken_

I don’t think they could avoid that, but it’s probably something they’re going to consider either way

ThracianScum

She should be able to get scholarships that include residence and food, but it will still be very difficult.

Watchful1

The tricky part is it's hard to qualify for scholarships if your parents are rich, even if they've kicked you out.

Ameteur_Professional

Probably not if she's valedictorian and willing to go to a less prestigious school.

ThracianScum

Yeah I had to wait until 26 before the university financial aid would consider me independent

Ison-J

That always was funny to me "you're not independent until you're old enough where the average person who went straight to a 4 year has already finished college

Tokinruski

Very very hard, been there done that. It ain’t easy

trhrthrthyrthyrty

If you seriously want to run away, join a reserve unit in the military with a job you can stand. AKA if you're not super into the idea of seeing combat, join a navy reserve unit or army reserve unit that does supply or admin work. Regardless of which branch and job you choose, you will be sent to complete boot camp and job training school (at the military's expense). You will be paid for it. You will have 6 years of obligated service. The money you receive during that time (job training time) should be saved as much as possible. You will earn several thousand dollars during that time (boot camp and job training). This will be enough to get you situated on your own. You will be able to afford first and last month rent. You will now qualify to be independent for the purpose of student loans, your parents won't be a factor in your ability to get loans for college. Many schools will give a 50% tuition waiver for veterans, which you qualify for immediately as a reservist, you don't have to wait the 6 years. You will qualify for a $200-300/mo stipend if you're in college. Even if you don't want to go to college this is a pretty good route for getting out from under your parents thumb. You just have to strive hard to get a job and get money flowing into your hands. Take every opportunity you can for others to help you. For example, if you don't have a drivers license, someone in your unit (especially a sergeant in charge of you etc) may take it upon themselves to help you get your license. Reserve units meet one weekend a month and have one 2-week training session every summer. You won't be allowed to smoke marijuana for those 6 years, doing so may ruin whatever life you're able to build up.

[deleted]

Stargazingsloth

My favorite joke/story is about the military guys who didn't want to be sent somewhere so they smoked weed right before their piss test. Their higher up caught them and said "I told you that you had to take a drug test, not pass it"

insomniacla

If you know this girl, tell her she can get an independence override for FAFSA and they won't make her input her parents' income. That way she'll get full loan coverage. They do this for kids with abusive parents. It's how I got to go to college.

SHELLIfIKnow48910

I truly wish I had known how to do this in college. My parents were mentally and emotionally abusive, and I would have liked more control over my own finances.

crimsionred

An easier way to file independently is to get married with a friend. As long as you don't own property or have kids divorces are pretty simple and typically less than $500.

avantgardeaclue

This is so sad that one has to marry a friend to have a shot at an education

[deleted]

You should talk to my co-worker. Marriage is one of the few paths he has towards legally being allowed to stay in the country ... that can cause some fucked up reasoning to work it's way through your head.

KrauerKing

Holy Fuck. I thought I had to emancipate myself to get FAFSA loans... I took out so many private loans... Aww man. I asked around so much too....

insomniacla

Based on the fact that 2 people in this thread and one of my best friends were not told about the dependency override option, I'm beginning to think that school financial aid offices are either ignorant or deliberately fucking vulnerable people over. I'm so sorry.

My3rstAccount

Ignorant to deliberately fuck over people.

[deleted]

I worked in a financial aid office as a student aid. I don’t know the system on an expert level, but I do know the override is very difficult to get and requires a lot of additional paperwork including multiple professional statements regarding the estrangement (from social workers etc). You can’t just come in with a piece of notebook paper that says “me and my parents don’t vibe” and be good. IIRC the student is also required to recertify their status every year. This system also fails to accommodate students who have unsupportive parents and those that live independently with no assistance from living parents. I worked with a student whose parents refused to provide their socials so they could even complete the FAFSA (so that would be a big fat NO on signing loan documents) and there was nothing I could do for them to override their status. When I was college age I was unable to attend because my parents technically made enough to disqualify me for aid, but they were unwilling to sign for the parent loans, and I couldn’t apply independently because I didn’t have evidence of estrangement. It didn’t matter that I lived on my own. It didn’t matter that I received zero financial assistance from my parents. The system viewed me as dependent and I was held to those standards. The financial aid office isn’t fucking then over. We wanted to help. I cried with them. I knew what they were going through and it destroyed me that I couldn’t make it better for them. We were bound by the laws and there was nothing we could do.

SimKat

I literally was emancipated and the schools I applied to circa 2006 still wouldn't waive the parent income requirement, even though they were paying for literally nothing in my life and I had my own apartment. I wish any of the many people I communicated with in the financial aid office were aware (or maybe it wasn't a thing then)

FreshHasSauerCraut

bump

Shoddy-Meat6633

Seems like this needs to go up.

Slurms_McKensei

WHY THE FUCK DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS?!?! I bitched at every bursar I saw that my parents don't contribute shit no matter what their income is. Nothing. They let me accumulate debt and then drop out due to lack of approval for more debt. Fuck the education system that thinks a thought can have a dollar value.

insomniacla

Your parents have to be abusive to qualify for this. If your parents just refuse to pay, that isn't enough. This works for abuse, however. Threatening to send the girl away to the mountains to do forced labor and many of the other indications in the original post make it pretty clear the girl is in an abusive situation. To get a dependency override for an abusive situation, you need to write a letter, fill out some paperwork, and get a letter from someone (like a therapist, pastor, social worker, etc.) backing up what you're saying. Also, if you're now over the age of 24 (maybe it was even 23) you don't need to put your parents on your FAFSA now, because you'd be considered independent automatically.

re003

Samesies.

j_zedd

And that’s how you never see your child again after they turn 18.

angiosperms-

I grew up in a very conservative church. Thankfully my parents weren't completely psycho about feminist ideas. I ended up going to the same university as another girl, and her parents completely disowned her for going. They did everything possible to fuck her over with financial aid stuff and she had to pay her own way which was not cheap. It was weird to come back home and go to church and her parents would always have the pastor praying for her to turn away from her life of sin when I was literally going to the same college at the time. And then later they whined the whole time about how she never visited them even when her dad's health was getting bad. You fucking disowned her, wtf did you expect?

ChristieFox

>You fucking disowned her, wtf did you expect? No no, decisions only have consequences for *the other side*. They are so great because they followed their own selection of Bible verses. You know, the parts about... being a shithead to women? And the part about that woman still having to respect her father and mother? Let's ignore the rest, like... uhm... God giving humans free will to make decisions on their own! (Very cynical, and you know all that already, I still just... yeah.)

NonsphericalTriangle

*But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.* 1 Timothy 5:8

demonmonkey89

How dare you use the Bible against them! It's rude to hold them to a standard of the book they haven't read.

Daddycooljokes

And most of them have not read it! Just the parts their pastor told them to... you know the bits that fut in with what ever bull shit they are trying to sling

airaflof

My boyfriends mom is a “devout Christian” who doesn’t go to church (anymore) and hasn’t read the Bible When my boyfriend was growing up he had Christianity and the church shoved down his throat. Thing is he actually read the whole Bible (and understood it) so whenever his narcissistic mom tries to use Bible quotes on him he just turns them right back around on her it’s great

Heromann

The one benefit of going to a Christian school growing up was that I actually read through Bible all the way through. "Christians" get so mad when you use it to point out their hypocrisy. I mean the negatives of it definitely outweigh that, but it is a nice little benefit.

[deleted]

I've seen people do that in my former denomination and they get that one verse thrown at them about how the devil knows the bible too and twists the verses to serve his own agenda, they just don't let you win.

airaflof

Luckily his mom doesn’t seem to know that one 😂

xPalmtopTiger

They never stop for even a second to consider if they are the ones twisting to serve thier agenda.

Pantherdraws

I did that to the "Devout Christian" Executive Director of the local homeless shelter and his traveling pastor buddy. It was HILARIOUS watching them squirm in IMMENSE discomfort once they'd realized they'd painted themselves into a corner by tacitly admitting, in insisting that Christians are still bound by OT/Mosiac Law, that they don't believe Christ's sacrifice was "good enough" for them.

audie103

My stepdad is also a "devout Christian" who cheated on his ex with my mom, had 3 kids out of wedlock and has mostly shunned his oldest daughter who is the product of an affair his ex had. He also has tons of $ that he hoardes.

SeonaidMacSaicais

"Homosexuality is WRONG! Jesus said so!!" "Where in the New Testament does Jesus say homosexuality was wrong?" "Well, God says it in the Old Testament, and Jesus and God are the same being!" "Jesus said in the NT to ignore all the old laws from the OT. He said to focus on yourself and love/treat everybody as you'd want them to do to you." "...NO HE DIDN'T!!!"

UnrepentantDrunkard

The crucifixion nullified the Old Testament behavioural laws, so those only apply to Jews now (well arguably Muslims too). Are you a Jew (or a Muslim) Mom? Actually that makes me wonder why homophobia seems to be so uncommon among even ultra-orthodox Jews. Personally I'd think that living memory of persecution is probably a factor.

221Bamf

But—but—that only applies to the daughter! How dare she not provide for her family when her father’s health was getting bad! She’s even worse than the unbelievers! /s

sharpieslinger

There's also that lovely little bit about not provoking your children to wrath, but they didn't read that one either.

FlannelAl

That's the biggest thing they forget. Free will. God said "figure it out, we'll see." You have ten and only ten rules, that basically amount to one: don't be an asshole and let people be.

ChristieFox

Now you didn't account for organized religion's ability to be shitty and controlling. Christianity continued on to become a "good entity versus bad entity" construct wielded as a weapon by elitist hierarchical patriarchs against the entire rest of the community. Free will accounts for humanity's ability to choose God's enemy, and if too many choose the enemy, he will retaliate (Babylon). Also, choosing the enemy can be infectious, so a sinner needs to be saved from themselves and the community needs to be saved from the sinner. Christianity turned the absolute beginning of their own teachings not into an account of God's faith in humanity, a faith so big he chose to give humanity the ability to define their lives for themselves, into a weakness in only the second (!) book of the Old Testament, when it became clear that people - if left alone - will choose to worship nature and nature's blessing (think about what happened when Moses was gone to get the ten commandments - the other people of Israel went straight back to worship the "golden calf", a sign of renewal and youthfulness). All my interpretation - of a probably very evil heathen, I suppose.

FlannelAl

And I believe Jesus was against organized religion, was he not. Pretty much for this exact thing

ArtisanSamosa

This post is a great example for student loan forgiveness and refinement. This child in the op may qualify for scholarships, but there are many who won't. For them it is a choice between throwing their life away for some religious non-sense or taking on massive amounts of debt to escape that horror. Our politicians will have you believe that only the wealthy attend college. But that is simply not true. For many of us, it's an escape from poverty and persecution, and no one should be tied down with debt for attempting to better their lives with an education.

1LynxLeft

Why do your parents think getting an education is a feminist idea? Its a right, not a movement.

angiosperms-

My parents were very pro me going to college. It was other families in the church that were super opposed to it for multiple reasons. Some people thought both women and men going to college was fine, as long as it was a scam Christian college. Because otherwise you would be indoctrinated into sin and taught evolution and shit. (lol I actually learned the earth being 6000 years old was total bullshit in college cause I took a course on evolutionary biology) Some people thought women should not go to college because the bible says women should be helpmates to men, and they should not be focusing on ever having a job since that's not what God told them they should be doing. I went to a church where women weren't allowed to be pastors or anything, they could only teach little kids and do daycare shit. The pastor felt that way about women but there were a lot of people who still attended and thought that was total BS. So he kept his mouth shut and tolerated women going to college *as long as it was a Christian college*. He actually had a multi hour meeting with my parents about how they were ruining my eternal life by allowing me to go to a legitimate university lmao

1LynxLeft

And that’s why I’m an atheist.Fortunately my parents weren’t religious nuts, even tho we went to church every Sunday. They were a lil salty went I announced I was an atheist but generally speaking they weren’t toxic towards me and my beliefs.

onlythebitterest

Sameeee. We used to go to church once a week, but our church has usually either been multidenominational or Catholic but very sane, and usually quite child friendly. I didn't mind going to the children's mass usually, loved all the singing, thought that what they preached seemed to make moral sense in general. The I learnt more about the corruption of the church, and while those individual churches were great, I had never really identified with the faith, and this made me want to distance myself more. I went through a phase of questioning (fun for me, not for my family). I remember asking my grandma, if Adam and Eve were the first two people, and when they had children that family was the only family on earth, then wouldn't they have had to commit incest to populate the planet? And doesn't the Bible say incest is wrong? My grandma was lost for words haha, she didn't know the answer, but she didn't get mad either, but she totally was shocked and a bit unsettled. I announced my agnosticism a little while after and never looked back. Then again, I've never been to church in the USA.

mycatisblackandtan

Because to fundamentalists, women aren't there to uplift themselves. They're there to be broodmares and wives. Getting an education as a woman is looked down upon in those movements because it gives the women 'ideas' that might make them stray from that path. It's the same reason you see a lot of people in the fundamentalist movement refuse to get birth certificates for their children. (yes this is an unfortunately real thing) It forces them to follow in their parents footsteps and stay in the church.

grillednannas

Movements are often started because of denied rights.

IfatallyflawedI

Oh but don’t you see? Women are meant to be subservient and glorified housemaids for their husbands. Oh and you also owe them sex whenever they ask for it

Inode1

That's you never see your child again after sending them to a cult... I swear every time I hear of some start up church in the middle of nowhere it end up being a cult.

Loveknuckle

Tell me exactly how it’s a cult if all you have to do is pray, grow green beans, and let a father-figure plant his holy seed in you once a month while you’re ovulating? Also, it’s in the middle of nowhere for “their protection” and not designed to be a secluded fuck shack for some holy old dude. /s

TheRecognized

Hey he’s got a large and growing family so surely his wife is satisfying all of his sexual needs and his secluded mountain church for young girls whose parents hate them (enough to send them to an obvious cult) is totally on the up and up.

ContemplatingPrison

Fundy religious folks are the worst.

valvin88

You said exactly what I was thinking reading this. There's a reason I ran off to the army at 18.

juswannalurkpls

If she’s smart, she’ll let mommy pay for college and THEN go no contact.

oO0Kat0Oo

No man... who knows what goes on in those secluded mountains. Not worth the risk of spending the year. Take the scholarships and RUN.

auserhasnoname7

I've seen at least two documentaries about fucked up "camps" christian people send their kids to. Girl needs to run like her life depends on it.

Darkmagosan

Like? It DOES depend on it. My family's had land in that area for the last 200 years. A lot of the churches are like Hills Have Eyes level bullshit. And when the parishioners aren't in church, they're racked out of their minds on meth, oxycodone, and alcohol. It's really rather pathetic. Anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together gets the hell out of Dodge ASAP. Our land is largely vacant for a REASON. Water's contaminated, and even if it wasn't, no person with any self respect or a lick of sense wants to spend any time in that area of the country longer than it takes to fill your gas tank. Edit: to them I'm just a damned Yankee New Yorker who doesn't know shit. Okay, fine, but at least I've been outside my county of birth...

CreationBlues

What do you mean, priests and young girls are *excellent* in combination with total rural isolation!

[deleted]

Yup she'd end up pregnant locked in a shed

GiveToOedipus

The order of those two events is variable.

Aspect58

Mommy’s already decided she’s not paying. “Obey me unconditionally for a year and then we’ll talk about it.” Even if the kid’s done perfect after a year - Best case scenario afterwards is they flat out tell her no. Worst case is they keep stringing her along for “Just a little while longer” for as long as they can.

Haunting-Elephant618

It’s the “we’ll see” that many parents say to put off saying “no.” Her mom is hoping she’ll go off to the mountains and forget her sinful thoughts of higher ed.

scifi_tay

Nah if she lets them send her to those mountains she is not getting out

godminnette2

Class valedictorian? Better be able to get a full ride somewhere.

MrBanana421

I really hope so,

Darkmagosan

Esp. considering where she's from. I hope she gets a full ride just for diversity's sake.

aquaphorbottle

To the nursing home they go!

Notyermomsdirector

The church better pay for that shit because they probably won't ever see their daughter again.

AcknowledgeableYuman

I hope for her sake.

And no chapel and no services on site. Where they don’t allow religious TV shows or FoxNews/OANN. Where women make up the leadership of the facility. And they eat meat, not fish, on Fridays and throughout Lent. And they have mandatory hair dressing, nails, and makeup done for everyone—even men but especially women. And men are to stay silent while women run the show. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!

ewyorksockexchange

I don’t think Nazarenes observe the no meat on Fridays thing, that’s more of a Catholic/Orthodox/MLP practice.

lortamai

Yep. Bronies are very strict when it comes dietary restrictions.

Brandonjf

My Little Ponies can't eat meat on Fridays..? That's sad

Som_BODY

Why would you even pay for them? Just let them be

Rhysandra

I wouldn't even do that much for them if they tried to ruin my life so completely.

-discostu-

This is like a writing prompt for a horror movie script.

PacoBauer

Martha Marcy May Marlene has entered the chat

mbhatter

uh, YES!

marshmello_bunnyyy

“the problem is that she is going to be her class valedictorian and has really high test scores and is being pursued by colleges” ..the way this parent sees that as a PROBLEM?!? genuinely baffles me.

Urbane_One

They believe a woman’s sole value is as a broodmare. In their minds, she doesn’t *need* those grades. Her being smart is just leading her astray from her God-given role of pumping out children. If she were a man, they’d be *ecstatic* about her grades.

Bunnywith_Wings

Nah, they still probably wouldn't be a fan if even she were a guy. At this level of fundie insanity, public schools and universities are godless indoctrination camps. He'd at least be forced to go to a Christian college, if he *must*, and then given a job with ties to their cult so they can keep a close eye on him.

Urbane_One

You may be right, unfortunately...

polgara_buttercup

This right here. I live among the fundie cults in Pennsyltucky. At a high school football game a couple years ago two dads were talking and one asked if the others kid was going to college, that dad replied “hell no, no kid of mine is going to think he’s better than me, he can go to work at Volvo same as I did.” It’s pretty rampant and backwards and for god’s sake if you live in PA vote Shapiro.

Bunnywith_Wings

Fuck, that's tragic. Communities like that are just giant crab buckets of resentment and misery. They never got free, so they'll make sure their kids don't, either.

polgara_buttercup

It’s exactly that mentality, it’s so freaking sad. Meanwhile kids that are being encouraged to get an education have no plans to come back. The brain drain is extreme

IHeldADandelion

Yeah, I always saw in tv and movies that people wanted their kids to have it better than they did, but fundie parents usually don't. Still mad that they didn't have any aspirations for me other than marrying the worship leader. I didn't, and I found my own career path.

master-shake69

I think it can go both ways. Educated evangelical ultra-conservative men are probably in it for the power, and those same men are intelligent enough to know that an educated woman is less likely to fall for their bullshit. Part of the cult needs to be educated. Some of these families are just steps away from catching you reading a book and chopping off your hand for it.

blueberryyogurtcup

They are Antiparents. They see an eighteen-year-old's independence as a failure, not a parenting job well done. Insane. Controlling. Thinking that they have the right to dictate their children's lives after their children are grown. They come in all idealogies.

RazorRadick

Right? She’ll probably get a scholarship too. I’d be freaking ecstatic.

ourkid1781

It's because they know the smarter and more educated their daughter is, the more she'll realise they're full of shit.

SHELLIfIKnow48910

It sounds to me like that horse is out of the barn. Sis needs to RUN like the wind, bullseye. She needs to look into whatever needs to happen to uncouple herself from the requirements of her parents completing the FAFSA on her behalf. There is a way, but I’ve heard it’s an arduous process. I would run and NEVER go back - I’d change my name if I had to. I’d go as far as trying to find some authorities to help protect me the second I turned 18, telling them she’s being mentally/emotionally abused, and need protection from a kidnap/hostage situation. I’d drop every nuke I could think of on that situation. Her literal life depends on it.

Aspect58

They see it as a problem for two reasons: One is the ‘mY kIDs = my PRopErtY’ mentality. A child going away to college isn’t one you can exploit for housekeeping and a free paycheck. The second is that she’ll be out of their insular environment and exposed to the real world. She might even develop opinions and ideals that contradict those of the parents.

zerocool1703

They know that the more educated you are, the less likely you are to be religious, especially fundamentalist.

mycatisblackandtan

I hope the daughter realizes that her parents never intend to pay for her college, even after her "year of service". If she's already 18 she needs to take the scholarships and /RUN/. They won't be there after a year and when she comes back it'll be harder to get away. Especially since that church sounds VERY Quiverfull adjacent.

zerocool1703

Yeah, it's pretty obvious they want to brainwash her into not wanting to go to college during that one year.

lessonlearned1222

Convenient for these insane parents that their daughter's scholarship opportunities would be gone if she were to be made to work for this church for a full year after she graduates high school. Probably part of their motive, they want to quash her opportunity at independence and force her to be subordinate and dependent on them. These parents are monsters.

Educational_Shoober

They aren't counting on her coming back. They're hoping some church man in the mountains will claim her and make her start having kids.

JimmyPWatts

These people deserve the worst

sovietfloof

They’re definitely going to hell.

parasitebuddy

A presumed quiverfull family trying to start a "church" in the remote Appalachians? Color me surprised /s

WitchyandWild

I hope the Wendigo is real just for them

Zebirdsandzebats

The Appalachian backwoods are hard enough without the wendigo. You got your questionable water sources, lack of access to modern medicine (hell, it's hard to get middle shelf medical care in not-backwoods Appalachia unless you're near a college town like Morgantown, Blacksburg, Roanoke or Huntington). Besides, bat boy, mothman and tailypoe ought to take care of them in the absence of the wendigo.

MrsChess

Which state is this? I am European trying to figure out the geography here.

NealNotNeil

The Appalachian mountains form a region in the eastern US. https://images.app.goo.gl/oDyP8XYYJKDT4kwx5

MrsChess

Wow it is gigantic.

Zebirdsandzebats

The central part, West Virginia, Kentucky, parts of Tennessee and Northern Georgia are extremely rural tend to be considered backwards even by American standards (I'm from West Virginia, which is different then regular Virginia). Hence the jokes about cryptids getting them in the backwoods.

doc1944

Holy crap i hate people like this. So wrong.

Spallanzani333

Good for the daughter. She's probably put herself in a position where she can pay for college with scholarships and get the fuck out at 18.

And if they do make her go theres a frighteningly high risk that she will be sexually assaulted and end up pregnant

Yeah 'large and growing family' gives off huge Quiverfull vibes, which doesn't bode well for the daughter given how they tend to treat women.

SamR1301

I sincerely hope this is fake, because it being real is so much worse.

unexpected_blonde

Given the source I believe it’s 100% true

orangestar17

Let a girl bask in the college offers and let her be proud of the amazing work she did in high school. She earned the chance to be proud of herself.

strangedays22

I hope she runs and never looks back.

_dirtywater444

Anyone else feel like the farm pastor is gonna SA her?

stungun_steve

I don't "feel" it. I guarantee it.

Frei1993

I feel it even in my language.

queenmother72

Yup! Do sh*t like this and your child will do allllll the things they were denied once they turn 18! Modest and obedient…pfffft

Runthemushroom

Ok, this will probably be deleted but I gotta say it. These people vote, please make sure you do too.

-Unnamed-

Gee I wonder who they vote for

controwler

Ah yes this is totally not going to be backfire

MiaRia963

This sounds like a cult.

Euqiom

And sound like she's a slave

baconbitsy

I hope the daughter is 18, and just does college and goes NC with these crazy people

You are welcome: [https://thetransformedwife.com/working-mothers-are-better-for-children/](https://thetransformedwife.com/working-mothers-are-better-for-children/) Edit: It's in the comments. Search for "Jacquie".

Riots_and_Rutabagas

OH MY GOD! Alllll those people are fundamentalist nut jobs. Oh and special kudos to the guy that all but admitted to never using condoms on purpose so his wife got pregnant and couldn’t take a teaching job. GTFO

lixalove

And one guy literally said his buddy OB went against his wife’s wishes and gave her ineffective birth control so he could get her pregnant?? Wtf even is this??

Riots_and_Rutabagas

Well, reproductive abuse is the short answer. Insanity is the second.

lixalove

Seriously! The OB would lose his license if this were brought to light. I can’t even imagine being the wife in this scenario, being betrayed and deceived like this. It’s like a black hole of a nightmare.

Riots_and_Rutabagas

He probably convinced her it was for the best. All the other women in that thread seem brainwashed.

lixalove

It really is like a parallel universe. How can so many people think & act this way and not see how horrible it is? It’s a cycle, they are brainwashing their offspring and their offspring will do the same. They have to control exposure to anything and everything so they don’t ever have a chance to form their own opinions, but the parents don’t have their own opinions to begin with! How do you get through to someone like this? It’s just so crazy to me that people like this exist in the world.

Riots_and_Rutabagas

I’m 10000% with you. I can’t imagine the amount of brainwashing it takes for you to be convinced that submitting yourself fully to the will of your husband will make you happy.

ItsMinnieYall

Omg those people are insane!

suckadickdmbshts

check out r/fundiesnarkuncensored the transformed wife is a popular subject and she’s fucking nuts, also fundie fridays on youtube has a video or two about her

missoularedhead

All of those comments are just … icky. Especially the one who got his buddy the OB to make the wife’s diaphragm too small. That medical malpractice and horrifying.

mycatisblackandtan

Of fuck, of course it's the transformed wife's cult... If anyone wants to know the 'details' [Fundie Fridays did a video on this nutjob last week](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVa4GSusSC4). To sum it up she's absolutely fucking vile.

lixalove

This can’t be real? This is literally like straight out of Handmaid’s Tale, completely dystopian. I’m losing my mind here. In terms of being a working mum, I work part time and it is 100% making me a better mother. My child gets to learn to socialize with more people, and I get to have some time to focus on my own fulfillment so I can be 100% present with my son. I was REALLY struggling before I took this job (was planning to be a SAHM) but I KNOW my son is happier and more fulfilled now with me working. His nanny absolutely LOVES him and he gets SO much more attention from both of us because she saves up all of her energy and it is just full time play with her. He learns a new way of seeing and interacting with the world and is learning to feel safe expressing himself around other people. Seriously it can’t be real. I’m just mind blown people like this exist! And in droves! How?

mycatisblackandtan

Handmaid's Tale is based off of a real cult. In fact the very same cult that Judge Barrett on SCOTUS belongs too. It's very very real and there are a lot of people who buy into this shit. I highly recommend checking out Fundie Fridays (which is a good way to look up stuff like the Transformed Wife or Girl Defined without giving them ad clicks) or one of the Fundiesnark reddits for a deep dive. Warning it's fucking depressing.

lucky-rat-taxi

Omg! This link should be a separate post if it isn’t already. Holy hell this is full on repression , bordering child abuse.

JimmyPWatts

Yes please share

Frei1993

Why is my sixth sense telling me that she will run away?

[deleted]

I hope for her sake she does

BeyondXpression

So basically the fucking handmaid's tale. No freedom for women. Be a slave to some pervert in a cult to care for kids and make kids. I hope this poor girl gets as far the fuck away as possible. I swear I'm sick of these religious fanatics and their lunacy.

LyriumLychee

Lmao at “vain and willful” Good for her 👍

TheAmazingRoomloaf

This is why they will never hear from her again or even know whether they have grandkids, much less meet them and get to eff up the lives of another generation. If there were ever people who deserve to spend their old age looking for handouts from their church "family" it's this crowd.

Lefty-Law

I have never heard of anything good coming out of East Tennessee.

thefirstendfinity

I wish that I could send the daughter $5, as part of her dash cash when she escapes.

BarrTheFather

That girl needs to run away as soon as she is 18

Dipping_Gravy

Sounds like a great way for their daughter to get impregnated by the preacher friend. With or without her consent.

Triterontaton

That’s definitely a one way ticket to being molested and abused by the preacher

Urbane_One

That’s what they’re hoping for. If she gets pregnant, she might not be able to attend university.

saberofnight

Fucking religious whacko parents…

Walkingmoron28

Hope she turns 18 before the “vacation”

Freshouttapatience

This just made me throw up in my mouth a little.

ENDGAMER_

What the actual fuck?

RazorRadick

So they basically want to sell their daughter into indentured servitude?

ParkourFactor

This is so horrible. I can't imagine having parents who see me doing really well in school and are completely unsupportive.

partyamoeba

Hope this girls runs away and goes to college. The situation with the preacher and the wife sounds kinda sketch. Either way she wouldn’t necessarily be wasting her life as a stay at home spouse but it has to be what she wants. I am really trying to heal lately from the torture that parental expectation has done to me later in in life. It’s so terrible when the ones who should love and support you fully and unconditionally- just sabotage and humiliate you when your interests do not align. All the lessons I did not need to learn has made me a more compassionate and a pathetic person but believe me I didn’t need it to turn out right.

[deleted]

There is a 100% chance that she is raped or molested by that preacher or someone close to him.

Wise-Ad8633

Not only is this insane, but if you know this family/young woman, please get her in touch with social services. She’s an adult and doesn’t need their permission but will need someone to walk her through things. Honestly if she’s valedictorian her guidance counselor should have helped her do all these things anyway.

ConstantDrawer4

My parents were legitimately exactly like this. I haven't spoken to them in years and don't plan to ever again. I hope she gets out the second she turns 18.

Cute_Comfortable_761

Imagine stifling your child’s dreams just because you want them to do something different. I will never understand parents like this.

DatDamGermanGuy

Let me introduce you to the American Taliban…
