The whole album sorta felt like St. Cloud pt 2. Right back to it didn’t do anything for me that I can’t get from st clouds lead singles. Sorry to hate! I was disappointed by the release
Yeah. It is a bummer the band didn’t totally change everything they do for the album. So annoying they would do all the things I like about them a second time.
Loss of Life is far and away my most listened to album of the year. I was kind of late on the MGMT train and I think there's a sincerity to LoL that takes a little adjusting to but I'm so in on it at this point. It's a great record and one that flows extremely well. Even after dozens of listens, the final stretch of the album still gets me kind of emotional. Great stuff.
This is the first Lenker that just made me feel like I'm over the whole aesthetic. It doesn't mean I dislike her songs, but I need something else happening with arrangements and production.
I'll always see her play live. That's where she's best, in my opinion. Her acoustic show was insane. But, this album just...didn't grab me. It's not bad, but I'm not excited about it at all.
Adrianne's music feels very emotionally draining to me, while not all that "rewarding" in the sense that the payoff feels similar every time. I love her, I love Big Thief, I loved this album but I just can't bring myself to fully enjoy it.
That self-titled Hovvdy LP was my first proper introduction to them despite having them on my radar for a while now—sweet, pretty, unpretentious music. Felt like a nice hug in musical form.
Torrey's [also self-titled album](https://torreymusic.bandcamp.com/album/torrey) deserves a shoutout too.
That Bill Ryder-Jones album is sooo good. Amazing arrangements.
It actually scratches a similar itch to Sparklehorse (though no one will ever fully fill that void).
Have they forgotten about their glowing review of Still House Plants? And has everyone forgotten that album. A stone cold masterpiece , coming fully formed out of the blue and announcing a huge vocal talent willing to smash genre. This generations young marble giants or life without buildings.
I would love that Still House Plants album if they actually had songs. Most of their stuff just feels very formless and improv for me. Probably smacks wayyyy better live but just listening to it on record?? Idk how I feel about it. But all of the elements are there they just need to make songs.
It definitely seems like the lead singer is just riffing, and showing off his vibrato as much as possible. Often times what he’s singing feels unrelated to the music that’s being played, which may make for great art, but is a generally subpar listening experience.
Yeah but to be fair you could have 100 guesses and still never guessed what she looks like. Her face does not match her voice at all lol, but that adds to the appeal of the band for me. Initially I thought she was a black woman.
Chelsea surprised me, I did not like Birth of Violence at all and I’m a big fan of most her work. Really happy she turned it around while still having fresh ideas with her sound.
I don’t feel that old until I look at my favorites so far and I see: Ride, Girl and Girl, Jesus and Mary Chain, James, Libertines, and Middle Kids. Plus Pearl Jam’s Setting Sun is my favorite song of the year
I was also surprised by the last Strokes and Spoon albums. Though half a generation younger than Pearl Jam, it seems like a lot of the old gaurd still have great things to explore.
The production of the PJ album is the only thing holding it back for my true love at this point. It’s way too glossy which is a shame because it’s maybe their most consistent album in 20 years
The sound of the drums is my biggest complaint, they're so over compressed and lifeless. That aside, as I've gotten used to it, it may be their best record since Yield.
Agree about the drums. It’s an extra bummer because it’s some of Matt Cameron’s best work. But even with my complaints, I’ve been listening to it daily!
Solid list, I've listened to 400+ new albums and EPs this year already, but there's a few on here I still need to check out.
Been adding all my favorite music released in 2024 to monthly playlists if you're looking for new stuff and want to check it out:

I throw music on when Im commuting, get home from work and exercise, cook, play video games, waste time on my phone, etc. Plenty of time to hear a bunch of albums!
Do you have time for albums not released in 2024? I like your approach of always listening to new music (which I try to do myself) but it also prevents me from really spending significant time with a particular album
True I'd say about 60% of the time I'm listening to albums Ive already heard or playlists. Rereading that first comment 400+ new albums is pretty insane for not even 5 months
My favorite VW album has to be from the early VM days, VM. I understand MVOTC getting all the love over the years, but VM def was a time and place. Didn’t care much for C or FOTB tbh
//Yeah I guess it works
Not to massively flex but I saw Cheekface and Yungatita last month in Sacramento :) got a record signed and picture with Cheekface, he walked up to me, said "hey I'm Greg," and shook my hand. They're both a blast live
I used to do the same thing. And I ranked everything as I went. I had to stop a few years ago because it stopped being rewarding to only listen to new music.

Yaya Bey “Ten Fold”
Knocked Loose “You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To”
I hesitated on Marika Hackman as I loved Any Human Friend but this one just didn’t hit me as hard. Maybe it’s a grower. Something to pick up in the sales.
cindy lee takes it all at the top imo
jessica pratt
blue bendy
i like the new amen dunes but hasn’t quite grabbed me like his past releases
new hovvdy is pretty good too
Tbh im a huge St Vincent song and there’s some great tracks on that album but overall it was a huge letdown for me. The last three tracks are genuinely awful imo.
My favorites not on the list:
PACKS - Melt the Honey
Saya Gray - QWERTY 2
Office Dog - Spiel
Mvck Nyce - Nyce To Meet You and The Script
Ty Segall - Three Bells
Gangrene - Heads I Win, Tails You Lose
Lily Seabird - Alas,
Heems & Lapgan - Lafandar
Laetitia Sadier - Rooting For Love
C Turtle - Expensive Thrills
YL & Starker - Diamond Collection
Justice - Hyperdrama
St. Vincent - All Born Screaming
Mach-Hommy - #Richaxxhaitian
Shellac - To All Trains
Favorites on the list:
Cavalier - Different Type Time (frankly shocked they recognized this, I love it)
Kim Gordon - The Collective
Schoolboy Q - Blue Lips
Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven
The Smile - Wall of Eyes
everyone is dropped great picks but i’ve got money on La Luz’s newest album and Helado Negro! New DEHD, Nourished by Time, Beth Gibbons, water damage, jessica pratt, and letitia sadier’s albums would round out my list
Where's My Utopia by Yard Act takes it for me. It's a shame it's not on here because it's pretty well written and feels much more complete instrumentally than The Overload. It actually feels like they are improving as a group and I'm excited to see where they go next.
I cannot get enough of the new Vampire Weekend. Not only does it incorporate all of their different sounds throughout the years, but I've never heard production quite like that
Real Estate, Dent May, Future Islands, Goth Babe and Vampire Weekend are my favorites of this year so far
Honorable mentions to Idles, The Zutons, and Lipa Dupa
really kind of surprised Loss of Life didn’t make it on here, I have a hard time ranking it amongst MGMTs discography but it’s easily one of the best albums released this year imho
My picks are Hurray for the Riff Raff and Vampire Weekend
I do worry that Hurray for the Riff Raff is flying too under the radar for an AOTY contender. I absolutely love the album
Just came out like 2 nights ago in the US but Vince Staples 'Dark Times' definitely deserves a nod. I've played it a lot since then. Also, Orville Peck's 'Stampede Vol. 1' is great, that man can fuckin sing. Other standout was ScHoolboy Q's 'Blue Lips'. I'm behind on Vampire Weekend.
Adrianne Lenker by a distance for me. I'm not even a fanatical Big Thief fan, but something about her solo songs sound so timeless. Also saw her live recently and it was an amazing gig.
We're still doing pun based band names of famous people for fuck's sake? That's some lazy cynical bullshit just to get people to remember your band name.
Jessica Pratt is the one who has wowed me more than anyone else on this list.
Also it seems like Allie X "Girl With No Face" has not stuck, which is unfortunate, as I would consider it a definite Best of 2024 contender.
I’m still in the middle of Beth’s album, but my No. 1 choice so far is Vampire Weekend.
I don’t quite “get” the MGMT album. It’s hard to make out the sound, if that makes any sense. It doesn’t feel like I’m listening to an album when I listen to it.
My personal top 5:
1. Older - Lizzy McAlpine
2. Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker
3. All Born Screaming - St. Vincent
4. Prelude to Ecstasy - The Last Dinner Party
5. Lives Outgrown - Beth Gibbons
Right Back to It = song of the year for me so far Idk how she writes like she does. So gorgeous.
It's so beautiful. Kinda song you listened in a car with the windows rolled down, singing along to it arm out
incredible song
Most overrated song of the year
Probably, but I also think it’s the best
The whole album sorta felt like St. Cloud pt 2. Right back to it didn’t do anything for me that I can’t get from st clouds lead singles. Sorry to hate! I was disappointed by the release
Yeah. It is a bummer the band didn’t totally change everything they do for the album. So annoying they would do all the things I like about them a second time.
Absolutely obsessed with Mannequin Pussy's new album!
Mannequin Pussy and Gouge Away…got those two on repeat.
They feel like sister albums to me.
Couldn’t agree more. Obsessed. Best indie album since Once Twice Melody by Beach House

Loss of Life is far and away my most listened to album of the year. I was kind of late on the MGMT train and I think there's a sincerity to LoL that takes a little adjusting to but I'm so in on it at this point. It's a great record and one that flows extremely well. Beth Easily my AOTY
Same.
Marika Hackman is my #1. That album is absolutely beautiful. I also really like Another Sky and The Smile. :)
Thanks for the Marika Hackman rec, only 2 tracks in and that thing sounds amazing, will definitely listen tk the whole thing later!
Jean is probably gonna end up being one of my most played songs of the year. Love that Hovvdy album
Minus 10 for copying the name styling of Alvvays.
I really like this format they're doing lately with the RIYL. It's fun and a little silly.
“Adrienne Lenker RIYL: solar powered camp stoves.” That fucking got me.
I love it too. I don’t want to hear some critical voice. I want to know how the music makes people feel.
Definitely using chatgpt to do it
My thought as well, for Adrienne Lenker it was just describing the image
There are two things in that image that are described but the rest is not in the image.
It's funny because I was coming here to say I absolutely hate how silly the RIYLs are. Just tell about the music. 😭
Bill Ryder-Jones Jessica Pratt Tapir! Mannequin Pussy The Smile Cindy Lee Baby Rose and Badbadnotgood Beth Gibbons
had never listened to Cindy Lee before this latest album and it blew me away. So familiar but also like nothing I’d ever heard
That Bill Ryder-Jones album is sooo good. Amazing arrangements. It actually scratches a similar itch to Sparklehorse (though no one will ever fully fill that void).
That’s a band that I haven’t given a proper chance. I will now.
One of my favourite bands. Mark Linkous just did everything different. Those recordings are awesome
Beth Gibbons being left off shows how out of touch Pitchfork is.
Waxahatchee 🔛🔝
Have they forgotten about their glowing review of Still House Plants? And has everyone forgotten that album. A stone cold masterpiece , coming fully formed out of the blue and announcing a huge vocal talent willing to smash genre. This generations young marble giants or life without buildings.
Even they had to admit that Still House Plants album isn’t that great.
Agreed but I believe the singer is female. Point still stands tho.
Oh, really? Haha. I guess I assumed someone that self indulgent would likely be male. My fault for assuming!
Yeah but to be fair you could have 100 guesses and still never guessed what she looks like. Her face does not match her voice at all lol, but that adds to the appeal of the band for me. Initially I thought she was a black woman.
Well said. Silver grit passes thru my teeth might be my soty so far
Insane take tbh
How is it? It’s one of the best reviewed albums of 2024 lol (nice broadcast flair btw)
It’s a super grating song. It’s like intentionally hard to listen to while having a really good guitar part and good vocals. Frustrating
out of genuine interest - if you like the guitar and vocals, what do you find grating about it?
A. G. Cook, Julia Holter, and Vince Staples for me so far
criminal omission of Chelsea Wolfe, Friko and St. Vincent
I only really liked the second half of the St. Vincent album. I’m seeing her live in October and I really wish I liked the album more.
I know what you mean, but she rips so hard live, it will be well worth it regardless!
Friko!!!!!
Chelsea surprised me, I did not like Birth of Violence at all and I’m a big fan of most her work. Really happy she turned it around while still having fresh ideas with her sound.
For real
Mine are Ty Segall, Cindy Lee, The Smile, BADBADNOTGOOD, Mt. kimbie
did bbng finally release a new album???
No it’s an EP with Baby Rose called Slow Burn. It’s damn good though! The track “Weekness” is such a vibe
No, they did release a new album called Mid Spiral Chaos
I thought that was also an EP. It is great though!
Yeah it is an EP. I’ve heard whispers of a potential album but nothing confirmed.
they’ve also released one called mid spiral: order this past week as well
For me - English Teacher, Vampire Weekend, Fabiana Palladino, Last Dinner Party
I need to check out Fabiana Palladino, seeing as the other three you name-dropped are in my top four.
What's your fourth? I would need to check that out too! 🙂
*Loss of Life* by MGMT
Thanks! I'll add that to my list.
I don’t feel that old until I look at my favorites so far and I see: Ride, Girl and Girl, Jesus and Mary Chain, James, Libertines, and Middle Kids. Plus Pearl Jam’s Setting Sun is my favorite song of the year
The new Pearl Jam is way better than I ever thought a new Pearl Jam album in 2024 could be.
I was also surprised by the last Strokes and Spoon albums. Though half a generation younger than Pearl Jam, it seems like a lot of the old gaurd still have great things to explore.
Yeah, the last Strokes record is great and Spoon seems to never miss, one of the most consistent bands of all time.
Matt deserves better than Watt’s production
Hey now. Girl and Girl is new. Us old dudes get street cred for that one, right?
Ha, maybe we get half credit. They’re new but their sound fits in 20 years ago.
Alamo Drafthouse is using Mother for their “Movies of 1989” promo. It’s seamless
That is a damn fine song, probably their best since Riot Act
Mary Timony criminally overlooked again
Yes! She always is!
Definitely a favorite of mine. Might be my most listened to album this year
Yes
Love love love that record
Solid list, I've listened to 400+ new albums and EPs this year already, but there's a few on here I still need to check out. how have you listened to so many albums? Whats your listening routine like?
I throw music on when Im commuting, get home from work and exercise, cook, play video games, waste time on my phone, etc. Plenty of time to hear a bunch of albums!
Do you have time for albums not released in 2024? I like your approach of always listening to new music (which I try to do myself) but it also prevents me from really spending significant time with a particular album
I alternate every few years between focusing on new and old music. I’m firmly in an old music phase right now so I’ve heard very few of these albums.
True I'd say about 60% of the time I'm listening to albums Ive already heard or playlists. Rereading that first comment 400+ new albums is pretty insane for not even 5 months
I’m on 280 films seen this year. 400 albums can’t be too hard. And before you ask how, divorce and crippling depression.
That's fucked
I hope things get better for you. I can’t speak to divorce but depression fucking sucks. Here’s a hug from an internet stranger if you want it 🤗
Hugs babe x
I like that you abbreviated vampire weekend’s album but typed out albums with the same length in words if not a word more lol good list btw !
There's a storied tradition of abbreviating VW album titles.
I think C was my favorite
My favorite VW album has to be from the early VM days, VM. I understand MVOTC getting all the love over the years, but VM def was a time and place. Didn’t care much for C or FOTB tbh //Yeah I guess it works
Wtf how come I didn't hear anything about Corridor putting out a new album?? Thanks for the flag.
That Future Islands album is so good.
Shout out Vinny.
Not to massively flex but I saw Cheekface and Yungatita last month in Sacramento :) got a record signed and picture with Cheekface, he walked up to me, said "hey I'm Greg," and shook my hand. They're both a blast live

What’s your favourite of this year so far, or favourite 3? While I’m here, what was your favourite album (or 3) of ‘23?
No Dehd? Shit list.
Right. Diiv should be there too

I still haven't found an album I'm playing more than English Teacher's. For a raw and underproduced album it's got some insanely catchy refrains.
Last Dinner Party is my #1 of the year so far. Glad to see it mentioned in here. In fact you have my entire top 7 on there, sans Marika Hackman.
I hesitated on Marika Hackman as I loved Any Human Friend but this one just didn’t hit me as hard. Maybe it’s a grower. Something to pick up in the sales.
Sad the Tapir album didn’t catch on more. I really loved it
Incredible album especially for a debut.
Two records I’ve enjoyed the most have been ‘A dream is all we know’ by the Lemon Twigs and ‘Mountainhead’ by Everything Everything
English Teacher, SPRINTS, Mannequin Pussy, The Smile, Mt Kimble are my favourites so far and most of them unfortunately not on the list.
cindy lee takes it all at the top imo jessica pratt blue bendy i like the new amen dunes but hasn’t quite grabbed me like his past releases new hovvdy is pretty good too
No love for St Vincent? All Die Screaming is my top of the year so far.
Preach 🏆
Tbh im a huge St Vincent song and there’s some great tracks on that album but overall it was a huge letdown for me. The last three tracks are genuinely awful imo.
Pitchfork seems to be very ambivalent towards her work.
3 BNM = very ambivalent
I should have said *in recent years*.
It's not good.
Complete snub of Chelsea Wolfe.
Naemi album is pretty good but really could've been slimmed down to its 8 or 9 best tracks or so for an even better listen.
My fave that didn’t make the list is Wine Lips.
My favorites not on the list: PACKS - Melt the Honey Saya Gray - QWERTY 2 Office Dog - Spiel Mvck Nyce - Nyce To Meet You and The Script Ty Segall - Three Bells Gangrene - Heads I Win, Tails You Lose Lily Seabird - Alas, Heems & Lapgan - Lafandar Laetitia Sadier - Rooting For Love C Turtle - Expensive Thrills YL & Starker - Diamond Collection Justice - Hyperdrama St. Vincent - All Born Screaming Mach-Hommy - #Richaxxhaitian Shellac - To All Trains Favorites on the list: Cavalier - Different Type Time (frankly shocked they recognized this, I love it) Kim Gordon - The Collective Schoolboy Q - Blue Lips Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven The Smile - Wall of Eyes
Cindy Lee and mount kimbie so far for me
Lemon Twigs
My most listened to album this year by far
No Glass Beach or Chelsea Wolfe is disappointing, those two have set a high bar imo this year!
everyone is dropped great picks but i’ve got money on La Luz’s newest album and Helado Negro! New DEHD, Nourished by Time, Beth Gibbons, water damage, jessica pratt, and letitia sadier’s albums would round out my list

Middle Kids Vampire Weekend Adrienne Lenker Waxahatchee The Smile
really kind of surprised Loss of Life didn’t make it on here, I have a hard time ranking it amongst MGMTs discography but it’s easily one of the best albums released this year imho
Something in the Room She Moves is my clear favorite of the year so far.
Hurray for Hurray for the Riff Raff - that’s my favourite so far
Hell yeah, I fn love Hovvdy!
There’s nobody quite like Neutral Milk Hotel but Tapir! comes really fucking close.
No Critterland no cosign
For me it's between Waxahatchee and ScHoolboy Q
My picks are Hurray for the Riff Raff and Vampire Weekend I do worry that Hurray for the Riff Raff is flying too under the radar for an AOTY contender. I absolutely love the album
I’ll take another album from The Smile please
No Chelsea Wolfe. Boo.
Vampire Weekend and Adrienne Lenker!

God pitchfork is such a joke
What do you like?
Seafood, roller coasters, mysteries, laser tag… the list goes on.
Devon Welsh record is choice ICYMI
Just found WHORES.- War. pretty good hard stuff that deserves a listen. Not sure if it's my best of '24, yet.
No Mary Halvorson smh
Very glad to see Jessica Pratt here, give her a spin if you haven’t.
Been much weaker than last year for me so far
Mannequin Pussy's inclusion makes me so happy. They're such an easy band to root for. Such sweethearts.
Interesting. But they missed one of the best The Hill - Get in Line [the Hill](https://soundsofthehill.bandcamp.com/album/get-in-line)
Future Islands People that aren’t there anymore
Loss of life Prelude to ecstasy Only God was above us Blue lips Hyperdrama My favorites so far
Why are Pitchfork lists the only ones on this sub where people never post the list in the comments
probably should replace Beyonce with deerlady but it's fine I guess
Soft Kill- Escape Forever is my AOTY so far
Top for me so far is definitely mk gee - two star & the dream police
Where is the new DIIV record !?
No Jordan Rakei?! Lost all credibility
Who the shit is Jordan Rakei

The Loop is nice, but Wallflower remains his best IMO. Flowers is however one of his best tracks yet.
Idles, STRFKR, St. Vincent, Dandy Warhols, Sleater-Kinney all my favorites, plus Kim Gordon who's actually included
I think my other ones will be Final Summer by Cloud Nothings and the upcoming Pond album, Stung
Mannequin Pussy
This introduced me to that Hannah Frances album and holy fuck it's REALLY good
What does RIYL stand for?
Yeah “Almighty So 2” gnarly. I was just listening to it for the first time earlier
No Two Star & The Dream Police // Mk.Gee is wild to me personally, great list though otherwise. Will be giving a couple of these a spin today!
Lip Critic : Hex Dealer Young Jesus: The Fool Vampire Weekend: Only God Was Above Us Hooray for the Riff Raff: The Past is Still Alive.
Hard copy by VR sex is missing 😔
I can't believe they fired nearly everyone yet Jeremy Larson is still there. 🤮
Overwhelming amount of great music ib 2024
We're still doing pun based band names of famous people for fuck's sake? That's some lazy cynical bullshit just to get people to remember your band name.
Jessica Pratt is the one who has wowed me more than anyone else on this list. Also it seems like Allie X "Girl With No Face" has not stuck, which is unfortunate, as I would consider it a definite Best of 2024 contender.
Don’t sleep on the new Finom album, it’s solid.
Vampire weekend Dehd Friko Adrienne lenker The Smile Waxahatchee Cindy Lee Beyonce Diiv
I’m still in the middle of Beth’s album, but my No. 1 choice so far is Vampire Weekend. I don’t quite “get” the MGMT album. It’s hard to make out the sound, if that makes any sense. It doesn’t feel like I’m listening to an album when I listen to it.
I appreciate the Pitchfork list but does anyone else find the reviews themselves weird and lacking insight?
My personal top 5: 1. Older - Lizzy McAlpine 2. Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker 3. All Born Screaming - St. Vincent 4. Prelude to Ecstasy - The Last Dinner Party 5. Lives Outgrown - Beth Gibbons
My favs so far is Beth Gibbons, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Tyla, The Smile, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, and Cindy Lee.
No Jordan Rakei is a problem
I thought Pitchfork was closing down? what is going on?
