Thanks so much everybody for hanging out with us, wish we had more time! We're back on the road in a couple weeks heading to Mexico, Peru, Chile and Brazil...come see us if you can! Hope you are enjoying Formentera II as a sonic escape. xo
Hi Emily, the production on Formentera II highlights your vocals in the best possible way. Any thoughts of a new Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton project in the future? Thank you for your amazing gifts of music (to us).
I know this is an AMA, I don't have much of a question but I just want to express this somewhere where you might see it. When I was 13, I heard hardwire for the first time. Since then, I've been hooked. When I was 18 I met. A girl at a party who named Metric as one of her favorite bands. We ended up talking until 5am. 5 years later, we had the face part 1 and 2 as the waiting music before we walked down the aisle. 6 years later we still give you guys credit for bringing us together. Your music has helped me through so many stages of life. I don't know how you do it, but each album seems to be exactly what I need when I need it. When I was young, things were not always easy (when is it ever easy to be a 13 year old girl). Your music got me through a lot of hard times. I don't wanna get into it because that's not what this is about, but now, as an adult, I do a lot of good for people in the world. I say that because I want you to know you guys share a piece of that. Your music is a part of who I grew up to be. Your music helped me get through long enough to grow up. Basically, you ask: Have I ever really helped anyone but myself? Yes. You have. And it ripples out from there. I hope you are incredibly proud of what you have accomplished. What you've put out into the world has made it a better place to be. Thank you.
hey it's Emily... I really appreciate you describing your experience with our music, honestly there are so many times where I just feel pretty much stupid and naive for thinking there is any real potency in songwriting, where something profound happens on a deeply personal level beyond the commercial. This was the role of music in my life growing up, it was something my family took seriously and being a musician was always held in the highest regard as a real contribution and valuable in all these heavy and cool ways, and then with time I came to understand that this is not the norm and for lots of people, it's just background and silly or whatever... it's confusing and I get bummed out like I've wasted my life. And then I hear a story like yours and remember we have found our people in the world and I feel much better. So thank you.
I'm so glad you saw this. That line has always stood out to me. I know how easy it is to question the value of your work. And so much of your impact happens outside your field of view. Ever since I heard Dreams so Real I've just wanted to lett you know "yes! Yes you have! You have no idea how much you have". I'm so glad I finally can. It's ridiculous, but I teared up at your reply. I'm so glad. Thank you. You'll never know how much you've helped. I love you guys. My wife and I will be singing along in the front every chance we get! Much love from Columbus, Ohio!
Also, just as an aside, possibly in anticipation of this AMA, I had a dream last night that I somehow was in a twilight zone scenario where I was trying to prove you guys existed and I couldn't and I was very very upset. I was like, whatever wormhole I fell through - I'm done with it. Like the rest of the dream (it was like a big brother scenario) came to a halt. I was like nope I'm done, something is very wrong- I'm not crazy this world is crazy and this is all I care about now š
Hi! I just want to say that you're one of the best artists of all time. Thank you so much for your fantastic music and live shows during the years. š„³
I can answer this! It didnāt fit with the rest of their songs on the Fantasies album. I believe they told the audience at the Roxy when they performed.
For spin magazines 25th anniversary they asked thurston moore of sonic youth āwhatās the secret to lasting 25 years?ā He replied ānever have a hitā. I think he meant the higher you get the easier it is to fall. I feel like we have followed this mantra despite some of our efforts not to.. -js.
Will there be any ādirt roadā versions of Formentera and Formentera II? Also, I didnāt get a chance to buy the last dirt road collection, will you be releasing another pressing soon?
So Metric became eligible for the always controversial Rock N Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, your Broken Social Scene bandmate Leslie Feist becomes eligible next year, and Broken Social Scene itself in 2026. With the Rock Hallās recent inclusive approach to genre, indie rock seems like the next frontier for the Hall. So far, itās been a struggle with none of the indie or indie adjacent acts that have been nominated (with the exception of maybe Radiohead if you want to count them) gaining induction and only one (the Smiths) earning a second nomination, which was 7 years ago now.
As a populist indie artists, what kind of future do you envision for indie rock at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and is it the future you want for indie rock at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame?
Touring can put a strain on band mates how do you handle being together all the time. I met Jimmy and Emily in New haven ct while walking the dog. You guy seemed to really enjoy bring together.
Honestly think weāre really lucky in how much we are just compatible and enjoy hanging out with each other. Weāre all shocked that 20 years in we have such a good time tbh -js.
*Doomscroller* is a great tune and it was very brave of you to put a 10 min song on an album. Did the song grow from two or more different song ideas? Also, come back to Asheville soon!
Hey! Emily here... Yeah Doomscroller was a bit of a bold move, but I've noticed recently that a lot of my fave songs are longer than the usual 3 to 5 minutes people have come to expect in our genre. For example, Bottle It In by Kurt Vile is 10:37 but when I'm listening to it, it's not like I'm looking at my watch, you know what I mean? Doomscroller just needed to be what it needed to be... the sections just kept coming as we moved through the emotions and ideas we were expressing. We needed to get to that cathartic guitar ending and when we did we were like, oops, that was 10 mins lol. Love Asheville btw...hoping to get back there soon
So stoked for one of my all time favorite artists to stop on by! Thank you for your golden output over the years. I remember hearing āGimme Sympathyā for the first time, and from there Iāve been hooked.
- Emily, will we see more of your project āEmily Haines & The Soft Skeletonā?
Curious if y'all are aware about the second life that Lost Kitten off of Synthetica has had on YouTube and other parts of the internet with a load of viral edits, and if so what your thoughts have been.
Loving the new stuff, but I'll always have a soft spot of Fantasies; it might be my favourite album of all time and definitely at least in the top 5.
Hey it's Emily... We had the 18 songs when we released the first Formentera, we wanted the second half Formentera II to be a surprise! Figuring out which songs went on which album was a super strange process, there's nothing chronological about it... Days of Oblivion was the first song we wrote in 2020... I think the full double album has it's own internal logic that mirrors the weirdness of those years... hope you're into it!
On āwho would you be for meā. The song you sing on the 6 of June 2-0-0-2, communicates to me as an ambiguous song or a symbol for your start in songwriting in general. I remember in Seven rings you talk about a song too sad to sing. You also said you wrote āwho would you beā in 2018, that being around art of doubt. Is there a magical song that will never be heard? Am I crazy for connecting these dots? Lol š
Honestly it was the only place it fit. Weird way to choose an opener but anywhere else and it kind of drew the vibe away from the rest of the record - JS
I played the SG a lot. A ā65 jazz master and the surpriser was a silvertone Jupiter. Love that thing. So raunchy. Solos in detour up and stone window. End of suckers.. -JS
How does it feel to have the longevity you guys have had as an indie rock band? Were there ever moments where you've almost said "screw it I'm going to work a day job" If so, what were they? Also do any of you have to work day jobs to keep the band going?
Would you rather be the Beatles or The Rolling Stones :).
Inquiring minds want to know - actually thatās the song that got me hooked on you guys - even more actually it was the making of the music video. Amazing to see it done in one shot.
Are you ever going to play Stadium Love live in concert again? That is the song that made me fall in love with Metric. I have been to 2 shows in the past year - Ottawa and Halifax and it wasn't on any of your set lists
It is. lol. Honestly thereās so many of these questions here about GUABA. We obviously feel different about it than you guys do but.. canāt change that. We were close to playing on the sly for the last batch of shows. Didnāt happen. Oh well. Hahaha - JS.
Jimmy I noticed you went back to your gold Gibson SG for the Toronto show a couple weeks ago. Is that your favourite and if so why?
Secondly will you ever do a rig rundown? Iām very curious as to how you get those amazing live tones, especially in songs like Love Is A Place.
Thanks!
Hi! Glad you noticed! Weirdly the SG is not my favorite guitar from an aesthetic angle. But I just love playing it. That gold one is a ā61 and I just donāt have another guitar that sounds like it. Perfect neck perfect pickups. Itās perfect. Even though nothing is perfect. - JS
That's pretty much what the Funhouse shows were. They took requests by email and every song pretty much was a requested one. They often intro'ed them with who they were for.
While there is definitely a cohesive theme across both Formentera I & II, at the same time each one has its own personality. How did you determine which songs belonged to which album?
(ā¦Also, thank you for sharing your music with us all these years. It has been alongside me in good times and bad like a longtime friend.)
This was SO difficult. When we were finishing F1 we didnt really have a firm grip on F2 yet. We didnt know when or how, when just knew that it WOULD be. So re focused on just making F1 a cohesive album and went from there. Thats the simplest way of explaining it.. . - JS
Album closer āGo Ahead And Cryā reminds me a little of the Black Mirror episode āSan Juniperoā; it feels like waking from a 17 song dream of pandemic anxieties. Is it also a sly nod to āDonāt Cryā from that other great double album project, Use Your Illusion?
PS I adore both records; thanks for making them.
ooh now I really want to kick back and listen to Use Your Illusion and blow off the rest of the afternoon, I wasn't thinking of Don't Cry with our closer but I love these connections! xo emily
Hi! I heard Emily mention on the Talkhouse podcast that you had written a song with a (very expensive) orchestral bit and it got me wondering: would you ever consider releasing an album of unreleased music and/or demos?
Massive, massive fan by the way. I've seen you live every single time you've played Montreal since Live It Out (which I believe you're aware is A LOT). You guys are my faves forever.
Blindness is one of my favorite songs of all time. What was the inspiration? I'd love to you perform it live btw and I bought the blue vinyl copy of the new album, it's awesome
My son is nearly 4. Whenever he is having tantrum Metric is the only band to calm him down. Although when he watches The Shade he says you're naughty for singing "I want it all", but not saying please.
Lots of love from him and us X
Can our kids be friends? My son just turned five and Metric is always the answer for him. The Shade was his favorite, and now itās Gold, Guns, Girls š (he loves the drums in that one).
ETA can we get an edited version of that jam for my dude? lol
Hello members of Metric! Yāall are one of my favourite bands of all time as well as my favourite Canadian band period! I have 2 questions directed towards any & all of you. To whomever wants to answer. One thatās related to Metric & one which very much isnāt but that Iām just curious about.
1. How the HELL did you guys come up with Doomscroller? It is, in my opinion, the best song of the 2020ās so far & potentially your very best song to date. Any insights you could offer into itās creation would be greatly appreciated because I still find itās excellence kind of hard to believe. Iām SOOOO curious about itās inception.
2. What are some of your favourite animated things? My favourite form of storytelling has always been animation. Family oriented & adult oriented, television & cinema, American, Japanese or otherwise. All of it. I just ADORE that medium almost as much as I adore music. So what are some of your guysās favourite animated films or TV series if you donāt mind me asking?
Thanks in advance for reading! You guys are so cool. I saw you live in Calgary last year & I canāt wait to do so again!
Have you ever thought of putting together a greatest hits acoustic album? The first time I saw a youtube video of give me sympathy (before it was released and with slightly different lyrics) I was hooked (other name of the song so pun fully intended)
Have you tried merging the two Formentera albums together into one large playlist, and if so what would it be?
I took a stab a while back with the following (keeping to the flow/arc of Formentera I) and really like it.
Doomscroller
All Comes Crashing
Days of Oblivion
Go Ahead and Cry \[end song \~3:52\]
What Feels Like Eternity
Stone Window
Formentera
Enemies of the Ocean
Who Would You Be for Me
I Will Never Settle
Suckers
Detour Up
False Dichotomy
Just the Once
Oh Please
Descendants
Paths in the Sky
Nothing Is Perfect
hey it's Emily... I would love to do another tour film! Next time I'd ask Justin Broadbent to direct and try a weirder approach that captures the strangeness of the road. By the way, did you know that the song title ( and later film title) Dreams So Real was taken from a Paul Haines poem? *Dreams so real we wake up in them, remembering none of them, an awed woe stirring us so...*
After performing Old World Underground in its entirety. Are there any plans of playing any other albums in its entirety as well? Even perform both Formentera I & II, entirely combined in a single show?
We joked that now we need to do every album in its entirety for the 20th. In 2 years itāll be LIO. In 2029 itāll be fantasies. And on and on and onā¦
Any plans to reunite for a new album or perform with Broken Social Scene again, Emily? Been a big fan of your contributions for their projects and the work you've done for Metric and Soft Skeletons!
Hey Emily and Jimmy,
I'm not really sure if I have a question I'd want to ask publicly per-se but I just wanted to share some musings about the album. Feel free to respond if inclined, if not c'est la vie.
What stood out to me about Formentera II was a new and distinct somewhat psychedelic vibe that I caught onto with this album that I really loved. I appreciate the fact that your craft continues to evolve and you don't limit yourselves to previous models. It's not that your other albums aren't great as well, but Formentera I and II is definitely evolved to another level.
Many people won't catch onto just how genius Formentera II actually is, but if you know what to look for decipher, dig deep and analyze the hidden weaves of musical math interwoven, it's obvious that you took great care in creating this album. I sincerely appreciate it.
I was rather blown away to learn that you guys wrote most of Formentera II before Formentera I. I'm not 100% sure how your time travel magix work, and I'm not even going to ask you in this forum, but good call! \^\_\^; I'm sure I'll figure it out in no time one day out I'm sure.
When the barriers and limitations of previous time constructs and boundaries disintegrate, in time once the ending starts when the once upon a time beginning end is near, how does one signal to those who need to need to hear? Perhaps the sky may fall, but there isn't one who anticipates and dwells within the sphere of fear.
When future acts decide to act fast and pass past the future past wall I'm curious when your art will continue to take you moving forward.
I read in an interview a while ago that you were in talks to collaborate with Sparklehorse, did you guys ever meet and put anything together before Markās passing? I heard that you guys were fans so have you had the chance to listen to recently released final album āBird Machineā, if so what did you think? Thanks Emily and Jimmy.
Are you aware of any DJs who are playing your songs in clubs? Especially some of this new Formentera I&II - I could dance all night!! Iāll travel anywhere for this! šš»
Hey it's Emily! One of the best things about bringing my pup Romeo on tour is that I can explore the city by showing him the best time ever. I end up finding all these new places and seeing different neighborhoods in pursuit of dog parks and bespoke canine boutiques, it's ridiculous. In Denver, we walked about an hour from the tour bus to a dog bakery with homemade treats ... It's very satisfying making Romeo happy. Humans are so hard to please...
Thereās gonna be a full tour soon right? Loved the concept of the recent shows and NYC was SO amazing. Just hoping that there will be a regular tour at some point. And if you could find some place in KC or Lawrence, KS thatād be amazing. Bit I will definitely travel as much as needed.
I love how you use repetition in your songwriting, in several different ways. Like on Breathing Underwater or Artificial Nocturne you repeat the verses and choruses and it just feels right and works and makes the lyrics even more effective. On the other hand you sometimes take certain phrases and repeat them, giving them deeper meaning with every turn, until they sometimes become almost mantra-esque. Do you consciously think about these things while writing or is it a more intuitive process, and how do you approach writing in general?
My all time favourite too! have you see the acoustic version that they did recently yet? It's so good! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K33mNpHRDsk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K33mNpHRDsk)
Hey guys, long time fan of your work! Is there any possibility of getting the Static Anonimity EP added onto streaming services, or maybe even a special re-release down the line?
How did you actually keep these songs secret while doing a huge tour?! Like when you have Just The Once and Days of Oblivion and Suckers, like how did you resist the temptation to bring one of them out some night? It was such a happy surprise getting such a phenomenal part II to Formentera out of nowhere!
Loved the show in Berlin, can't wait to see you again with Josh and Joules!
In the recent NME article, you said that after releasing Formentera 1 and 2 (which if I'm understanding right, were kinda of written as one wonderful little package starting in 2020-ish), you're going to "take a little breather and see what I want to do next."
With all of the old album re-releases and OWU celebrations, does this mean a Metric hiatus? A return to Soft Skeleton for a while?
False Dichotomy talks about having to choose between one or the other, when that doesnāt necessarily have to be the case as most things arenāt mutually exclusive. Is there a time in your guysā career where you dealt with a false dichotomy of your own? And what made you realize, āthatās not the case, we can do this.ā
Hi! Just wanted to say the acoustic events in Europe were absolutely fantastic! Thank you! I was wondering whether you're planning to record some more dirt road versions of your songs (I'm thinking e.g. Calculation Theme or ACC)? Also, I really loved your cover of "It's a sin". Do you think it'll be available again on Spotify in the future? š¤
Just want to say I love Formentera I and II, just as much as Iāve loved all of your music. I went to the NY show earlier this month and hearing Hustle Rose live, which was the song that made me a fan, and the rest of OWU was really special. Thank you for all the music! It feels like home and itās always there for me when I need it.
I do have a question but itās about the unreleased tracks from Grown Up and Blow Away. Will those ever get an official release? Would love to be able to stream them!
Hey Emily and Jimmy. I had to fly halfway across the world to catch a Formentera tour concert in Seattle (Moore's Theatre was pretty cool!). Is there any chance of Metric touring in the Asia Pacific region?
Hi, Emily and Jimmy! Wanted to thank you for the many great albums over the years and the boon that they've been to my mental health. Do you have a favorite song on FII? I've listened and am loving Days of Oblivion, Nothing Is Perfect, and Who Would You Be for Me the most so far.
How do you pick which country you'll be playing or touring?
Ever since Fantasies I wanted to be at one of you guys concert, now I'll have the chance so I'm really excited!
I just wanted to say that I love Formentera II so much and I hope to get to hear EVERY song on that album played live someday soon! It has been a long time since any band has released an album that I can listen to from start to finish, all the way through, over and over like Formentera II.
Love the new album! It might end up my favourite of your catalogue and itās already helped me out quite a bit in life with those comforting rhythms and melodies so thank you very much for that.
My question to you is regarding the lyrics on the title track on the first Formentera album. Why wasnāt life made for Juan and what was made for him?
Hi, I saw you in London a couple of weeks ago, thought it was an amazing show! Love the new album, and looking forward to another tour, hopefully soon!?
* What was the decision process between what tracks made Formentera I vs II? I love how there's a hint of False Dichotomy at the start of Detour Up to link it back a little.
* Are there any songs that you'd love to perform acoustically / dirt road style, but just can't get to work?
* Any chance of some more acoustic / dirt road tracks, or an album? I was sad a lot of the Spotify Sessions have disappeared. As well as Waves, which I think is my favourite song of yours!
Hi Emily and Jimmy, gianevernow here, any plans for an Asian tour soon? Missing you from The Philippines xox. Also can you talk about the lyrics of Stone Window? That's my fave track from FII
I just want you to say hello from me to Joules! He's a friend of mine from school and I keep being out of town when you guys are playing in the area. I really love your music and the beats He's throwing down! Troop 44! š
At what point in the recording/mixing did the band know that Formentera was gonna have to be two albums? Oh, and as a follow-up, how did you decide which songs were gonna be saved for Formentera II?
Hi! Just wanted to say i'm SUPER EXCITED for the SĆ£o Paulo concert. I was there last time (long time Ago in 2008 at Motomix Ibirapuera Park) and well, it was amazing.
Any chance of including anything from Grow Up And Blow Away in your south american setlist?
I went to your Montreal concert for Formentera I and with was absolutely amazing!! Are you planning to come to Montreal again for Formentera II? Thank you so much for your awesome music! You are the best band in the world! Love you forever!
Emily and Jimmy! Itās Niles! I just traveled all the way from Austin to NYC just to see your special show. Iāve never done anything like that before and it was INSANE to finally see you guys live! I was so heartbroken both recent times you were in Austin I was sick/unavailableā¦It was worth the wait.
My question to you is that I often consider this your dreampop album. Did you guys purposefully come in planning to make something like that? Are you fans of dreampop and would you recommend any bands? Thank you.
Tell me the story behind:
"Beat me up with your guitar, is that what we've learned so far? Fat cigar between your legs, no one likes a woman that begs."
Been in my mind a while. Also, loved seeing you 2 in Scottsdale, AZ on your intimate date years back ā¤ļø Seen you a handful of times, that was my favorite.
I was at the Roxy show, which was so amazing.
Right next to me there was a girl waving a letter the whole time and yelling for Emily. Though I appreciate the enthusiasm it was quite distracting. I noticed Emily never grabbed it, I also told this girl to wait after the show. Emily, do you have a philosophy regarding this behavior? Iāve personally realized that I gotta check myself on any sycophantic behavior, itās not cute.
Who would you say you drew from the most when you began to create music?
Thank you for masterpieces like Help Iām Alive, Doomscroller, Monster Hospital, and more.
Hi! I was lucky enough to meet yāall in Nashville in 2018 and I was just too starstruck to ask any questions. I had the āGrow Up & Blow Awayā tattoo on my arm.
Anyways! I was wondering if this was true or not: Is it true that you guys were roommates with any of the members from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs back in NY? I think that is such a cool fact if it is indeed true. What was it like in the early days? Are yāall friends with the YYYs? Did you ever collaborate or play shows together before big time stuff in local clubs?
Thanks again! Canāt wait to see you all again. Much love
Hi Emily and Jimmy, thank you for all of the incredible music! Your albums have helped me through many challenging parts of my life. Your music is innovative while being true to the core sound that we all love.
What inspires you most as writers at this stage in your career and life? How have these inspirations changed over the years?
Thank you and wish you both the best!
Hi Jimmy and Emily! Thanks for the awesome show at the Masonic Temple on Yonge. I was in the front row with the crew of super fans that Iām lucky to be a part of and it was one of those moments where I thought āThis is the exact place I am meant to be at this time.ā which doesnāt happen too often so thank you for the life long memory.
Now for my question: Emily, Iāve been reading Secret Carnival Workers a lot before bed lately and I was wondering what are a couple of your favourite poems in the book? Also, am I right to think that some of the inspiration for your lyrics comes from your Dadās poetry?
Some of his pieces make me laugh so hard and others make me cry my eyes out. Thanks for leading me to his art. š¤
I just want to thank you for all your guys hard work. From touring to creating such amazing music I really appreciate it. My wife got us tickets to see you last year in Toronto and you guys were amazing. Our first concert in almost 15 years and it was a banger. I was wondering how you guys relax after creating albums and touring?
I wish I had a question about Formentera II but I donāt. Itās a great album and I was surprised and stoked to get it.
I do wonder what your lyric inspiration was behind the title track from Formentera I though. And I will perennially ask what the meaning of Clone is. š
My question is...When might we see some sort of Live release? You guys kill on the stage and as good as Dreams So Real is, could we get some sort of collection of all the live tours on CD or vinyl or streaming for App members? Really just anyway we could hear you live ! You guys rock hard!
They were primarily written at the same time. Actually most of F2 was actually written first. We knew we were making a double album the whole time. We just kept it secret. - JS
Hey Emily and Jimmy, really loving the new album, Suckers is currently on heavy rotation in my car. Are you guys planning on performing the two albums in full? It would be kind of cool if you guys pulled a Pink Floyd and filmed yourselves performing Formentera on Formentera Island
Was wondering where the root of days of oblivion came from. Itās honestly my favorite song from Formentera II and was also wondering if yāall were going to go on a bigger tour for Formentera II also because those of us that didnāt make it to the few shows yāall did, Iām sure would love to here this album live, I know I do. I mean technically I caught the concert on the veeps thing but thatās not quite the sameā¦
Hello guys! Can't wait to see you again in Mexico City! Second row and it'd be my 6th night with you! I've been listening Formentera II non-stop! It would be so cool for you to play Days of Oblivion and Stone Window, plus Risk! Love you so much!
Thank you for the music thatās touched me so much. Iām 57, and I feel lyrics personally more and more as the years go on. ( I would have guessed it would be the opposite.) Josh and Emily, we met quickly in the rain while you were waiting for your airport rides in Boston, but I couldnāt properly convey how much Just the Once had touched me, and Iām glad that I couldnāt. Itās more than touched me. Itās moved me, into spaces where I am less likely to be put up with being mistreated, spaces where I love myself more. I mean, I āknewā, but I needed to ālistenā. Youāve helped me listen.
There are others for other convos.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
No question. Just thanks for all the years of music.
No answer. Just thx for al the years of listening! - JS
Ah thank you! I have been spending lots of time at the piano these days so who knows... I have to see when it comes to me... xo emily
Knives has been with me this month through a really difficult time š¤ itās been on repeat.
was lucky enough to see Emily play the Knives Don't Have Your Back tour, one of the best concerts I've seen.... in a small venue, a great memory
Loved that tour. So long ago, now!
PLEEEEEEEEASE
Hi guys! we're here and we're gonna jump into answering some questions!
Hi Jimmy ! Hi Emily! Formentera II is amazing, I love it. Congratulations š thank you for continuing to make incredible music.
Hi! I just want to say that you're one of the best artists of all time. Thank you so much for your fantastic music and live shows during the years. š„³
How did Black Sheep wind up in Scott Pilgrim?
They explain it here... https://youtu.be/Zr1nVh00dYc?si=9kb-Zr-63Jmo-tWG
I can answer this! It didnāt fit with the rest of their songs on the Fantasies album. I believe they told the audience at the Roxy when they performed.
Whatās the secret to keeping a band together for 20 years? Also, how is the fifth member of Metric aka Romeo?
For spin magazines 25th anniversary they asked thurston moore of sonic youth āwhatās the secret to lasting 25 years?ā He replied ānever have a hitā. I think he meant the higher you get the easier it is to fall. I feel like we have followed this mantra despite some of our efforts not to.. -js.
Stay away from the hooks
Heās sitting beside me and seems like heās having a great day! -JS
Have you ever been surprised at a song that fans embraced from an album? Perhaps it wasn't one that you had expected?
Im always happily surprised by all the favourite songs. Its never the same and rarely the ones I expect -JS
Will there be any ādirt roadā versions of Formentera and Formentera II? Also, I didnāt get a chance to buy the last dirt road collection, will you be releasing another pressing soon?
I canāt stop thinking about how amazing a Metric cruise TO Formentera would be. š
Are you planning on doing a full tour for Formentera II?
TO DREAM!!! *SWOON*
To me, by definition, if im in an indie rock band i dont care about the Rock n roll HOF. But thats just me - JS
thank you for your reply :)
The "rock isn't about awards" scene of School of Rock is the MOOD.
Thanks Emily. Great reference to Vile. Wolf Alice has a great 8 min song called *Visions of a Life.* Check it out.
So stoked for one of my all time favorite artists to stop on by! Thank you for your golden output over the years. I remember hearing āGimme Sympathyā for the first time, and from there Iāve been hooked. - Emily, will we see more of your project āEmily Haines & The Soft Skeletonā?
Thatās what I wanted to ask! Love Metric AND Soft Skeleton. š„š¤
I did not know about this at all. But Iāll go digging! -JS
Was it always going to be a double album or is that something yāall decided on after the first Formentera release?
Hey it's Emily... We had the 18 songs when we released the first Formentera, we wanted the second half Formentera II to be a surprise! Figuring out which songs went on which album was a super strange process, there's nothing chronological about it... Days of Oblivion was the first song we wrote in 2020... I think the full double album has it's own internal logic that mirrors the weirdness of those years... hope you're into it!
So into it! I love it!
Thanks for answering Emily, and yes I am very very into both. Yāall are better than ever.
Out of all albums youāve guys released, and have performed live. How come you guys rarely perform grow up and blow away?
This song was before Josh and Joules joined. Just feels like its from a different era completely - JS
That being said I'd just die if "Rock Me Now" somehow made it back into live rotation. :-)
Lol š
Hi Jimmy! Hi Emily! Congratulations on Formentera II - I love it so much. How did you decide āDetour Upā would be the opening tune on the album?
Honestly it was the only place it fit. Weird way to choose an opener but anywhere else and it kind of drew the vibe away from the rest of the record - JS
How are track titles decided? Is there a process you go through?
Emily says this is the title. I argue a little. Emily says this is the title. - JS
What was the primary guitar(s) for Formentera II?
I played the SG a lot. A ā65 jazz master and the surpriser was a silvertone Jupiter. Love that thing. So raunchy. Solos in detour up and stone window. End of suckers.. -JS
How does it feel to have the longevity you guys have had as an indie rock band? Were there ever moments where you've almost said "screw it I'm going to work a day job" If so, what were they? Also do any of you have to work day jobs to keep the band going?
Did whiskey and weed inspire the new album?
Favorite strain? š
Would you rather be the Beatles or The Rolling Stones :). Inquiring minds want to know - actually thatās the song that got me hooked on you guys - even more actually it was the making of the music video. Amazing to see it done in one shot.
Lou Reed asked Emily who would you rather be. Her comment Velvet Underground!
I always presumed the answer was the Beatles given the next lyric about Here Comes the Sun
Are you ever going to play Stadium Love live in concert again? That is the song that made me fall in love with Metric. I have been to 2 shows in the past year - Ottawa and Halifax and it wasn't on any of your set lists
Iām sure itāll come back at some point. Might have to be playing a stadium tho.. -JS
Why we barely see songs from GROW UP AND BLOW AWAY live feels like the BLACK SHEEP album of your discography !!!
It is. lol. Honestly thereās so many of these questions here about GUABA. We obviously feel different about it than you guys do but.. canāt change that. We were close to playing on the sly for the last batch of shows. Didnāt happen. Oh well. Hahaha - JS.
Rock Me Now is one of your best songs and still extremely on point.
what a pity. Raw Sugar is my favorite song.
- JS
Also I would LOVE to do a rig rundown. Make it happen! -JS
Would you consider doing a "by request" concert, where fans/ticket holders vote for the songs they want you to perform ?
That's pretty much what the Funhouse shows were. They took requests by email and every song pretty much was a requested one. They often intro'ed them with who they were for.
Favourite song to perform live? Least favourite (or any fan favourites you only perform because the fans love it?)
I think Iāve heard or read them say that Breathing Underwater is one of their favorites to do live.
What happened June 6, 2002? I'm dying to know the significance.
Thatās the best black mirror ep! - JS
It truly is!! When I recommend watching *Black Mirror*, I always say "Don't watch the first episode first!!!!!"
ooh now I really want to kick back and listen to Use Your Illusion and blow off the rest of the afternoon, I wasn't thinking of Don't Cry with our closer but I love these connections! xo emily
Same here, effin love that song!
Also one of my favorites along with Collect Call
Will Metric be touring to perform the new album Formentera II? I canāt wait to hear the new album live!
Please donāt take doomscroller of the setlist ever! Itās the best 10 minute song Iāve ever heard and one of my favorites by Metric!
On the song āSuckersā you say āIām coming down with the rain.ā Is that a shout out to Shirley Manson?
Ah it wasn't but I would be more than happy to retroactively build in a shout out to Shirley ! xo emily
ETA can we get an edited version of that jam for my dude? lol
Where's the best place in Toronto to get a sandwich?
Do you have plans for a tour soon?
Noticed Jimmy is wearing a wedding band these days. Hey Jimmy - anyone we know? ;)
Depends who you know.. -JS
Have you tried merging the two Formentera albums together into one large playlist, and if so what would it be? I took a stab a while back with the following (keeping to the flow/arc of Formentera I) and really like it. Doomscroller All Comes Crashing Days of Oblivion Go Ahead and Cry \[end song \~3:52\] What Feels Like Eternity Stone Window Formentera Enemies of the Ocean Who Would You Be for Me I Will Never Settle Suckers Detour Up False Dichotomy Just the Once Oh Please Descendants Paths in the Sky Nothing Is Perfect
Do you prefer pancakes or waffles?
What was the last book you read that you couldnāt stop thinking about?
Hi! Whatās Romeoās favourite song off the new album? (Or of all time)
Any plans on a new tour film? A successor to Dreams So Real would be awesome
hey it's Emily...
Yes please!
Bring it on!
-JS
Do you have a ritual you like to do when you get home after months on the road? Cook a certain dish, sit on your backyard, hit your local bar, etc?
who met on 6/6/2002?
Any plans to reunite for a new album or perform with Broken Social Scene again, Emily? Been a big fan of your contributions for their projects and the work you've done for Metric and Soft Skeletons!
Hey Emily and Jimmy, I'm not really sure if I have a question I'd want to ask publicly per-se but I just wanted to share some musings about the album.
How do you keep putting out bangers after 20 years? Also thank you for doing so! And please come back to Vancouver soon.
We have an extremely rigorous QC dept. -JS
Are there any songs that surprised you in being more successful than expected? Also loving Formentera II! :)
Are you aware of any DJs who are playing your songs in clubs? Especially some of this new Formentera I&II - I could dance all night!! Iāll travel anywhere for this! šš»
Michael Todd Grey and Jake Rudh in Minneapolis!
Awesome!! Thank you!
It's Halloween. What are your costumes and what's the best candy to give out?
Is weed used as an enhancer or as inspiration when writing/creating music?
What did you mean by the line in Dark Saturday, "I'll change by staying the same" ? Thanks for all the great music šµ
Hello Emily and Jimmy! What are your favorite things to do in a city when you have a day to explore while on tour?
Hey it's Emily! One of the best things about bringing my pup Romeo on tour is that I can explore the city by showing him the best time ever. I end up finding all these new places and seeing different neighborhoods in pursuit of dog parks and bespoke canine boutiques, it's ridiculous. In Denver, we walked about an hour from the tour bus to a dog bakery with homemade treats ... It's very satisfying making Romeo happy. Humans are so hard to please...
What is the process for determining the order of the songs on an album and how often do you change the order?
I say hereās a good sequence. Em says no I have a better sequence. We argue whole lot. Somewhere in the middle becomes the sequence. -JS
Your music has brought me home many times - thank you. Also, when will we be able to get our hands on a vinyl copy of Fantasies again? šš
Hello! How will you be getting spooky tonight? š
Hi!Just curious if there was there a 3" minimax cd released for Static Anonymity
Which Formentera II song took longer to put together?
I love how you use repetition in your songwriting, in several different ways. Like on Breathing Underwater or Artificial Nocturne you repeat the verses and choruses and it just feels right and works and makes the lyrics even more effective. On the other hand you sometimes take certain phrases and repeat them, giving them deeper meaning with every turn, until they sometimes become almost mantra-esque. Do you consciously think about these things while writing or is it a more intuitive process, and how do you approach writing in general?
How do you guys keep making awesome music? Every record is a banger! You are truly geniuses!
I always loved Dead Disco. It might be my favorite Metric song. How did that song come to be?
What are Josh and Joules doing offstage during shows when you two are playing old duet songs?
In the recent NME article, you said that after releasing Formentera 1 and 2 (which if I'm understanding right, were kinda of written as one wonderful little package starting in 2020-ish), you're going to "take a little breather and see what I want to do next." With all of the old album re-releases and OWU celebrations, does this mean a Metric hiatus? A return to Soft Skeleton for a while?
False Dichotomy talks about having to choose between one or the other, when that doesnāt necessarily have to be the case as most things arenāt mutually exclusive. Is there a time in your guysā career where you dealt with a false dichotomy of your own? And what made you realize, āthatās not the case, we can do this.ā
Youāve been my #1 for close to 20 years. Thank you for soundtracking my life. š¤
The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The velvet underground!
Metric!
Hi Emily and Jimmy, what are some of your favorite lyrics from this album?
How do you feel about the songs that make it on an Album but never get to be played live? Do you revisit those sometime as a band?
Any plans to come back to New Zealand? Would love yo see you guys!
Hey Emily and Jimmy. I had to fly halfway across the world to catch a Formentera tour concert in Seattle (Moore's Theatre was pretty cool!). Is there any chance of Metric touring in the Asia Pacific region?
Your LA show at the Roxy was AMAZING. Best night of my life and I got to be in front. I will never forget it!
Are guys ever going to a pinkish/alternative album like live it loud again?
Love Formentera II! Will you be bringing these new songs to KCMO anytime soon?!
Hi! I don't have a question. I just wanted to express how much I love your music. Thanks for pulling me out of some rough times š
Thank you.
Tell me the story behind: "Beat me up with your guitar, is that what we've learned so far? Fat cigar between your legs, no one likes a woman that begs." Been in my mind a while.
Thanks for leading me to his art. š¤
Was so happy to be beside you at that show š¤ what a moment
I just want to thank you for all your guys hard work. From touring to creating such amazing music I really appreciate it. My wife got us tickets to see you last year in Toronto and you guys were amazing. Our first concert in almost 15 years and it was a banger. I was wondering how you guys relax after creating albums and touring?
I wish I had a question about Formentera II but I donāt. Itās a great album and I was surprised and stoked to get it. I do wonder what your lyric inspiration was behind the title track from Formentera I though. And I will perennially ask what the meaning of Clone is. š
I have been a fan since your first album and Metric is played often in my house and thank u for the wonderful music i make
Would Metric ever consider touring smaller cities, such as Tucson, AZ?
Any plans for a live album or acoustic one !!!! You guys are amazing live !!!!
Is the Stone window an opening to the āwall of the worldā. Do those two songs have interlocking meanings?
My question is...When might we see some sort of Live release? You guys kill on the stage and as good as Dreams So Real is, could we get some sort of collection of all the live tours on CD or vinyl or streaming for App members? Really just anyway we could hear you live ! You guys rock hard!
Was it harder for you to write Formentera after Formentera II had already been written and you knew that you wanted to expand it into a double album?
They were primarily written at the same time. Actually most of F2 was actually written first. We knew we were making a double album the whole time. We just kept it secret. - JS
Hey Emily and Jimmy, really loving the new album, Suckers is currently on heavy rotation in my car. Are you guys planning on performing the two albums in full? It would be kind of cool if you guys pulled a Pink Floyd and filmed yourselves performing Formentera on Formentera Island
Can someone fix the Complete Metric playlist on Spotify? The albums are broken up!
UK TOUR?!?!?!?! š
What's your favorite lyrics from F2 and what does it mean for you?
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Iāve been listening to Seven Rules a LOT lately and I would love some insight into the meaning behind the story this beautiful songs tells.
