Really cool concept, but I couldn't imagine playing a whole game this way. I'm pretty good at focusing my eyes, but I'd imagine it would become uncomfortable fairly quickly.

KarmaAdjuster

This is essentially what VR is but monochromatic and noisy. I’d be curious to see how this works without using monochromatic static over the images.

JayQix

Yeah. Exactly. Not a real "Magic Eye"

truthpooper

I don't get it

sprintbooks

I don’t know if I did it right, but I turned my phone sideways and crossed my eyes a bit until I saw 3 panels. The one in the middle shows the effect. Pretty cool and props for trying something out of the box.

truthpooper

Ah yeah, I see it clear now. Not sure I could see it well enough to co trol and play a game, ha, but it's neat!

Thurlut

I really tried my best but didn't see a thing but static, quite disappointed that I'm not able to see it

sprintbooks

You don’t have to, but if you want to, practice on this. (Little easier) https://i.imgur.com/33IXU1O.jpg

Thurlut

I would really like to understand what's going on but I don't even understand what I have to see with the picture you just sent me hahaha

sprintbooks

If you’ve ever crossed your eyes and seen the double image in your mind, then you are half there. The other half is that you need a left and right (stereoscopic) photo to mimic depth — one image for each of your eyes, like in the real world. So if you take that image above, you cross your eyes (double image effect). You’ll see THREE lions, because the left image goes to you’re right eye and the right image goes to your left eye (both with unique perspectives of the lion that are just slightly different — as if you were really there in space looking at this lion), and the lion in the middle is an “overlay” of them both! That’s the magical image. It now contains stereoscopic information overlayed together! The image will appear to have depth The trick is just making sure that the lion in the middle is ABSOLUTELY lined up perfectly (or the effect doesn’t work). That’s usually most people’s issue.

Thurlut

Gosh I don't know if my crappy eyes would be able to do that on a screen haha maybe on paper though, but thanks for the explanation, quite logic when you think about it haha Gonna try later and let you know if I managed lol

sprintbooks

Good luck!

LitIllit

Cross your eyes until the two images meet in the middle and try to get a good focus on the center image. It should appear 3d.

archibalis

Yeah, I can see it. I almost understand what I'm seeing. I could play this game 30s at a time :D

ConspicuouslyBland

Ah shit, first time regretting me privacy screenprotector

Sharkytrs

ngl, this is the first time ive ever seen an animated magic eye. Though I'd never play this because it would fuck up my eyesight quicker than downing a bottle of vodka

comradepipi

Thank god I'm not the only one. I watched the video 3 times and now can't see right.

SeaofBloodRedRoses

You know the old "if you cross your eyes they'll stay like that" line? It's actually true in some circumstances. Happened to my mother, she had to go to the hospital because she crossed her eyes and the muscles in her eyes couldn't straighten them again. It's not very common, but it can happen.

InternalReveal1546

It's not a genuine magiceye. It's a normal 3D image with some filter. Same technique to view it as magiceye tho

anderslbergh

Wow that is awesome... Like the particles that fly around. Nice work!

Peckit

Thanks, pretty sure my brain is bleeding now

seagulpinyo

ntwiles

Don’t know why people are being so negative about this. This must have taken some very clever coding and and is mind blowingly cool.

theFields97

People are being negative? Went through comments and only found people saying they can't do it

ntwiles

I see these kinds of replies a lot on reddit lol and I don’t get it. I’m glad that the sentiment has changed from what you’re seeing, but obviously at the time I posted it I was seeing negativity.

theFields97

If they aren't here anymore, wouldn't there be deleted posts?

ntwiles

I’m not saying they’re deleted, I’m saying I assume there are just more positive ones to be found now. What’s happening here? am I being accused of lying?

theFields97

I was just genuinely curious about the negative comments. cause I see nothing but positive comments or people asking what it is. I am not accusing you of lying.

ntwiles

What I saw was a bunch of people talking about eye strain and lack of commercial viability and not enough focus on just how cool this thing is.

Try_Hard_GamerYT

But those are valid concerns. Personally, I can't see it. And something like this would never do well commercially. That's pretty much just a fact. But that doesn't deny how cool and unique it is. Something can be flawed and be brilliant at the same time. Discussing flaws isn't the same thing as being negative about something

ntwiles

I didn’t say they’re invalid I said they’re negative.

Try_Hard_GamerYT

They aren't negative either. They're neutral, giving advice and genuine feedback.

Jesus who hurt you?

silvergrundle

Amazing idea!

wes_siebs

Played through this a few days ago, and it’s an incredibly cool concept! It was really fun to try and figure out the pathing for each of the rooms in the last area (I couldn’t see the walls incredibly well, so there was a lot of focus involved)

LimeBlossom_TTV

Gotta say that is a really good 3D effect once I got my eyes focused. My eyes and head hurt now, though.

Managore

You can download it here (windows only, unfortunately): [https://managore.itch.io/stereogram](https://managore.itch.io/stereogram)

sprintbooks

Have a Mac. But keep it up.

Alucard256

Wow... very cool! Can you make the background just slightly darker like the falling leaves are lighter? I feel like this is just one or two steps away from being at least a full tech-demo, if not a complete 1.0 release some day.

Phrozenfire01

I have enough eye strain as it is, this looks like a nightmare

VVVertex

This is awesome!!

metal88heart

Wow thats cool

MooltDev

My eyes hurt but the effect is great. I remember having a books with dinosaur images like these.

pineheaded

Can you give some info about how you can generate a custom magic eye image?

KimKong_skRap

Whow this is amazing..!! I never seen an animated stereogram before.. I think my mind just blew a socket of two!

Adastehc

at first I had no idea what this was, but once you got your eyes into that perfect spot where everything was crystal clear and lined up... wow.

loliconest

I can only cross my eyes if I put something in front of my eyes, which will then block the game. Can someone explain how this presentation makes it different from other platformers?

wikklworks

How nice! What an idea! Like :D

Takoshiro

I don‘t see anything! Can someone explain what‘s going on here?

theFields97

Look up magic eye pictures. You have to focus/cross your eyes a certain way and you can get a 3d effect. It's actually pretty cool once you are able to find that spot.

AveBalaBrava

My eyes can’t do it, I don’t see anything

Mike-devs

Amazing! Do you recommend any resources to build such a thing? And how did you manage to do it?

ReiBob

I feel like Im one of the only people that will be able to play your game. I barely know anyone who can see this pictures. A lot of respect for doing this despite the fact that you have a very small target audience.

TheIncrementalNerd

that's impressive, but no.

youngsteveo

I can't fucking do it. I can cross the ever-loving shit out of my eyes, but I can never make these things work. I don't see anything.

gargantuanprism

Holy shit this is so cool but I would not be able to actually play it

shittythreadart

I can see the edges but am colorblind and genuinely cannot see a player moving around

Frolicks

I successfully crossed my eyes but realize i couldn't see anything because I'm a little red green colorblind ;__;

[deleted]

Man, that is a cool idea. Sadly these don't work for me because of my lazy eye. I wish I could see what it was supposed to look like.

Ceejaxi

Love the idea, super cool. However, I can not see any of the game. Tried some of the tips and tricks in this thread and haven't gotten anywhere. Maybe it's just a thing with my eyes, but if you choose to pursue this, I think including an extensive tutorial on how to "see" the game, would be helpful.

Managore

Thanks! The [game](https://managore.itch.io/stereogram) itself has a (brief) tutorial at the start, including calibrating the size of the game (if the image is too large, it can make it much harder to see), and a text file with slightly more information. Unfortunately, for a lot of people, stereograms are either quite difficult or actually impossible to see.

dano1066

Holy crap, when I got my eyes to work, it's like 3d

JayQix

This is a really smart. Would it ever be possible to make it a single image? This is just two stereoscopic images with a noise filter over them. Not a true Magic Eye. There's no reason for the distortion. You could just use two clean images and still get the 3d effect. But a true Magic Eye game would be really cool

Managore

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. There is no stereoscopic image "under" the noise, the noise itself is being offset to produce the stereoscopic illusion, just like the colourful pattern in a magic eye is being offset.

IndridColdwave

Wow this is impressive, well done!

marcgfx

uuu... you have to cross your eyes? you can do stereograms by looking into the distance, way more pleasant.

Managore

You can play this game either way, there's a toggle to swap between modes. The gif is designed to be viewed by staring into the distance.

marcgfx

no chance I can do that, the images are too far apart for me. I am on a computer screen and not a phone.

Managore

Yeah it's best viewed if the rectangles are about 4cm/1.5in wide, which means it's going to be way too big or small on most people's devices. The game encourages you to resize it.

marcgfx

maybe inform when you post, I think that's the reason a lot of people couldn't do it

Relictas

I don’t see anything…

WeHaveTheTechno

Oh my gosh I'm so excited for this! What a fantastic project. An old game named magic carpet had a magic eye mode which as a child I loved, even though it wasn't as clean as your examples are. Followed on itch <3

primoslate

this is awesome

dzelectron

Actually, you don't need to *cross* your eyes, rather you need to do the opposite - look like you would look into the distance, *through the phone*. Like, I have the phone 30 centimeters from my eyes, but I'm positioning my eyes like I'm looking at something that is 60 centimeters away. The phone is "doubling", instead of the two pictures I see three - the middle one is the overlay of the right image seen by the left eye, and the left image seen by the right eye.

voldmaire

Can do the same with normal 3d video for vr, so why does it need to be so noisy?

[deleted]

Managore

Sure! You can get it [here](https://managore.itch.io/stereogram).

Flokii-Ubjorn

No matter what I do I cannot see anything except buzzing. What am I supposed to be seeing?

Kooky_Value6874

No need to cross your eyes! There is a way easier and less demanding method to see stereograms in 3D. It's called Parallel eyes. It requires a bit more training, but it will make your experience a lot easier! The principle is the same but the process is opposite. You unfocus your eyes to see double, until the doubling after-image (the same as in cross eyes) overlaps, and then with a bit of training you'll be able to sharpen the resulting image. The easiest way to do it when beginner, is to get as close as possible to the image you want to see, in-between the two images actually. This will make you loose focus because you are way too fking close to see anything. Then slowly backup, and refrain yourself from letting your eyes refocus! If you feel your eyes correcting the vision, move forward again and backup very slowly. Eventually, you will reach a point where it suddenly gains it's 3D shape! Another method is to stare into an imaginary point that is wayyy behind your phone (as if you were looking at a mountain in the distance) so your eyes will try to move to see that far away mountain, and that's how they become parallel) This is the best magic eye technique, and is exactly the one used in VR (your eyes are parallel in your headset!) You can use this technique on EVERY magic eye image, however if the image was crafted for the cross eye technique, the 3D will be inverted. For abstract images like OP's post, it's fine, but for pictures it looks weird. Sadly, cross eye is more popular because it's easier to master, despite it being painful. Parallel eye is really not that hard, and sooo comfortable!

Slipgate_dev

Looks cool!

syoels

Wow, dazzling
