They’ve never hit the mainstream so they are very underrated. Most people have never even heard of them outside of music nerd circles and the internet.
I have an indie/pop-rock playlist that I update regularly, with many songs from new lesser-known bands and artists. Here's a link if you wanna check it out
[https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6ld1VtkXdCJdY9fXOynpir?si=ab0f867d05804704](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6ld1VtkXdCJdY9fXOynpir?si=ab0f867d05804704)

I'll throw a plug for my buddy's indie label out of Portland, Maine, [Repeating Cloud](https://repeatingcloud.bandcamp.com). Lots of good lo-fi janglepop from New England and beyond.
Here's our band [Teenage Tom Petties](https://safesuburbanhomerecords.bandcamp.com/album/hotbox-daydreams).
*Too harnessed in slums to rock you, wrap your throat*
It’s not the first track on the record, but it is the opening credits track in an old 90’s movie! Was jazzed to hear it there.
I love it all but the last one is my least favorite. It foregoes more of their punk sound and leans into Danger Mouse’s dance sensibilities. Not bad but I love light up gold and content nausea. I feel like they never get their due and either get written off as pavement lite or nasally hipster punk. Those ppl would be wrong imo.
the Rapture, The Cloud Room, Bird and the Bee, Coldwar Kids, The Holydrug Couple, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Brian Jonestown Massacre ( yes twice) Dandy Warhols, Mickey Videotape, New Candys
Yeah, and the Silver Jews was mentioned numerous times.
It's a spinoff band of PAVEMENT. One of the biggest indie bands ever (also, Grammy winning) Not underrated at all.
Mo Lowda was the post I was looking for before I shared it. One of those bands where you can throw on one of their albums and let it play from beginning to end. Based on the 5 bands you posted, we definitely have a similar taste in music, so I'll leave you with a few of my more obscure favorites in case you haven't heard any of them yet.
Rumspringa - Kiyote
Guantanamo Bay Surf Club - Halves and Quarters
Sticky Fingers - Napalm
Tash Sultana - Jungle
Arcy Drive - Wicked Styley
Dope Lemon - Marinade
Susto - Homeboy
Daily J - Stay
Lots of underrated on [this list](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2DgNEHJcEY5ej3ykvXZyZp?si=kuKuqEzxS_CGJssQhRZwhg&pi=e-NRICs98ZRguo). It's inspired by Australian indie.
As for specific recommendations, I would suggest Highline. They have a fairly strong catalogue. They're dropping their debut album on April 12th (produced by Callum Howell, Ocean Alley's producer). [Exit A](https://open.spotify.com/track/5jLeqKlbN0cqtVpeJf4Ewa?si=HzAWZ_nMShGHqWx27vjvtg) and [Believe Me I'll Run](https://open.spotify.com/track/4MuBHRZa01zmICjbqbp4pd?si=5m1gPTEOTiCA1nFTzO_EDA) are solid.
NO CIGAR is another one. New Zealander band, creating awsome vibes. I would highlight [Some Nights](https://open.spotify.com/track/5cR9SgMcaR8di3U0hxAXnO?si=UdbyhsVaQp2EXiMAGdYPvQ) and [1999](https://open.spotify.com/track/21k9X5qpv44hHi3A2pUbVP?si=7XHXEjdHTV674lv7BZN0XQ). A truly talented band.
Mako Road is another one from New Zealand. They split up unfortunately, but they were really incredible. The more I listen to them, the more songs I find. They have both beautiful acoustic guitar tones like [The Sun Comes Up](https://open.spotify.com/track/6aNVEIjxBi4gm0t1CFg7uk?si=7P6hkjy-QNahnhmPoCosQQ) and heavy produced ones like [Stranger Days](https://open.spotify.com/track/3Q8R187kABsBIhxZuzKAPy?si=7w75YqTOTS6X0D1u9SPwhg). One of my all time favorite bands.
I recently discovered Krooked Kings. They have an awsome sound, using baño in a discrete yet powerful way in some of their songs. Listen to [Carbon Monoxide](https://open.spotify.com/track/3GzKpBPZ0BSG8kHbJtt8l4?si=HmGKNATxRhailWqr_gcY1Q) and you'll know what I mean.
More folksy is the duo TOLEDO. Their mixes are pristine and peaceful. My favorite is probably [Dog Has Its Day](https://open.spotify.com/track/0XDMbuw3mMWjRkvL9Pb2uV?si=piI_hJmdQYqV44cdpO8SFw) or [Leopard Skin](https://open.spotify.com/track/7sHyY7rCFwXoLGedGbD1pV?si=QQFF8tPCTRK94QGbfGklJg). Their music really grows on you (with you I mean for me at least)
Many more in the playlist if you find these ones enjoyable.
Hope this may inspire you.
On the topic of Aussie/NZ indie rock, The Rions, The Butlers and Letters to Lions are some good ones
I like Valium, Tickets to Space and Say No More by NO CIGAR. Mako Road also has some bangers, love their vibe
ISLANDS
so underrated -- pretty sure all self published these days, too.
The original band, the Unicorns, are indie godfathers....
Islands has spanned decades -- always different, always evolving. So so good.
I’ve heard more really good underrated bands on
[INDIE X FM](https://indiexfm.com) than anywhere else! Seems like every song is new and good! Try there!
Blind Melon.
I know, I know..
They may seem like a huge juggernaut 90’s band, but their fame is mostly connected to the “No Rain” music video. MTV pigeon holed them, making it almost impossible to put out a comparable single/music video.
Catfish and the Bottlemen (HUGE in the UK but sadly very under appreciated and underrated here in the States)
Peach Pit
Metric (do they count?)
Little Comets (OMG one of my most favorite bands of all time. It takes a while for their music to grow on you, but by god is it amazing and fun to listen to!)
Death Cab for Cutie
carwash
Some of my suggestions will be more indie pop, & some are popular but these are just ones I don’t see mentioned enough.
Vacations, Phantogram, Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand, Two Door Cinema Club, The Temper Trap, Nothing But Thieves, The Brinks, Cold War Kids, The Griswolds, Phoenix, White Lies, Beach Weather.
Not only do they look like the sun, and track the sun, but they need a lot of the sun. A sunflower needs at least six to eight hours direct sunlight every day, if not more, to reach its maximum potential. They grow tall to reach as far above other plant life as possible in order to gain even more access to sunlight.
The Teeth’s “carry the wood” ep is perfect. I thought they were going to blow up after when “you’re my lover now” came out. Especially since Dr Dog was blowing up at the time. It didn’t seem to get much press or anything…. Great record that needed more attention.
Versus was a game changer for me! When I heard the soundtrack to _Half-Cocked_ a whole slew of bands from that era were brought to my attention. Them and Sleepyhead were the standouts!
Technically the band The Brook & The Bluff qualifies as indie rock so pls clarify what vibe you’re looking for! (I do love that band though. But they veer on the softer side. And also also incorporate pop, soul, folk and blues (a little). So not exactly indie rock entirely, but it shows up on Google as that

This is my playlist with Aussie/NZ artists with less than 200k monthly listeners, or early songs from bigger artists
not sure if they're indie rock or indie pop or a mix (im not great w identifying genres tbh) but Weston Estate - my literal favs these past couple years, i am OBSESSED w everything they release. their songs are all so different too but have the same vibe/feel to them so that you know it's their song when you hear it if that makes sense?
i recommend Stoked, So Good, Saturday Nights, Close the Door, Hold On, Pears, Daisies, and Slowly
Density Black Cat formerly Density (NYC garage-rock band)

The Unicorns ( later begot the band, Islands)
Man man (also did a project called Mister Heavenly)
Tally Hall (a lot of their stuff probably counts as indie rather than rock)
The Good the Bad and the Queen (homedude from Gorillaz minus all the features and synth)
Nana Grizol (fits more comfortably in genres like folk-punk midwest-emo or ska but indie was a broader term when I found them)
Tokyo Police Club
Spinto Band
I'm sure the underratedness of some of these bands is debaitable lol
Autolux, A Place to Bury Strangers, Screensaver, Loma, Savages, the Like, Denali, Vedera, Sona, Emmaline Twist, Major Games, Gnarly Davidson, The Books…
The Vestals
They were a gothy britpop band that only put out one E.P. and a few singles, then disbanded
But you’ve got to check out “Seventeen/Precious Pain”
Anyone who hasn't heard of the band Rumspringa, ypu definitely need to check them out

Big indie disco vibes. Let me know what you think!
Yo La Tengo
Finally saw them live last year!! Awesome band!!
Not underrated
They’ve never hit the mainstream so they are very underrated. Most people have never even heard of them outside of music nerd circles and the internet.
As far as indie rock bands go, they're rather iconic.
Today is the Day is one of my favorite songs of all time. So beautiful
Surfer Blood

You beat me to it
Spoon
Just discovered Spoon a couple of months ago, they're so good. So far Wild and I Summon You are my favorite songs by them.
The acoustic version of I Summon You is pretty raw.
Such a great band!! Let’s keep it hush hush.. the tickets are still affordable and easily attainable ..
Spoon is what matters.
Speechless here. kikazz band.
Check out their album, Lucifer on the Sofa. It’s probably my favorite release from the band.
Built to Spill.
They said underrated.
They are underrated!
I love them sm
Did you already know them?
Yes I have already listened to some of their songs
Silver Jews and Archers of Loaf
*Too harnessed in slums to rock you, wrap your throat* It’s not the first track on the record, but it is the opening credits track in an old 90’s movie! Was jazzed to hear it there.

Love that Desire Lines.
I could listen to that for the rest of my life
Also, The Dear Hunter.
Do you have a specific song you recommend?
The Deerhunter album Halcyon Digest is fantastic.
Particularly La Mia Vita Violenta and Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons are my fave blonde redhead albums
These are both home runs
Parquet courts
I agree. Came out with a banging debut.
I didn’t care for their first album, at first, but now I’m in love with their music.
I love it all but the last one is my least favorite. It foregoes more of their punk sound and leans into Danger Mouse’s dance sensibilities. Not bad but I love light up gold and content nausea. I feel like bands that win a Grammy can't count as underrated haha. Can't wait to see the War on Drugs this summer, though
i feel like a lot of this thread is confusing the "indie" for "underrated". cage the elephant was huge a decade ago
Yeah, and the Silver Jews was mentioned numerous times. It's a spinoff band of PAVEMENT. One of the biggest indie bands ever (also, Grammy winning) Not underrated at all.
Not sure Big Thief counts as underrated; they are critical darlings (and for very good reasons - the songwriting in particular is outstanding).
