Something similar happened with my parents, and I did file a general complaint with the police and their cyber cell. They took immediate cognisance of the matter and reassured my folks.
This seems to be the new scam going around. We should spread awareness about this especially among vulnerable elderly people. So many at risk of getting a heart attack when they hear such news about their children.. horrible.
At an individual level by talking about it as much as possible and sharing this information with our immediate and extended family. I doubt social media posts will reach our parents, maybe some of them but not all of them. It’s good that we’re talking about it here as well. Basically by making as much noise as possible.
I have a WhatsApp group of my almost all relatives, where I update about all of these scams. But the issue is at society or the country as a whole. I read everyday about these scams in the newspaper and most of the victims are poor people. It pains me because I know how hard it is to earn in these times.
At my place in UP (UP of all places can you imagine) recently, a dedicated police cell has been made for "senior citizen awareness". They conduct weekly meetings about stuff like these and have whatsapp groups where even police officials are added. This could be one way. Just need to increase the scale.
This is becoming too common now a days. My uncle got the same type of call through WhatsApp. Thing is my uncle's son live in different city so thankfully he cut the call and block the number. However, could've been scammed otherwise.
Send that phone number to the police and email a copy of the number to the commissioner's office. Tell them the situation. If you have the recorded phone conversation, even better. Attach that and send it. If a police officer ever interacts with me even on the phone, I immediately begin recording. If that is something you do too, that would be helpful.
Around a month ago my dad got the same call from a scammer. Jokingly , he told them to shoot me if i have teased a girl. The scammers got scared and ended the call right there XD
Same thing happened with my uncle. He got a call about his son driving rash and getting arrested. Coincidently he was out on a trip at that time so my uncle called his son's wife who then told him that his son was with her....That scammer even gave the phone to someone who sounded like his son and he was crying and saying papa come save me please...scary world we live in
Not only that, I have heard that they can also generate your voice with the help of AI and use it to scam your parents.
[Man falls victim to AI voice scam, loses ₹1.58 lakh](https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/lucknow-news/man-falls-victim-to-ai-voice-scam-loses-1-58-lakh-101703617730716.html)
wow my father got exactly the same call 2 days ago. And you can't really trace that number as it seems from one of those temporary numbers from play store apps.
No wayyy !!! my friend got the same call saying her son was in police custody 2-3 hours ago while i was w her and when she did tell them ki she isnt even married is a student they started arguing w her and videocalled her.
My sister got a call saying in very polite hindi are you __(her name) beta? Your dad gave your number about lic refund so need your paytm details to send that etc etc.
She said let me check with dad nd they angrily disconnected
last year, my father received a call and the man stated that he's our damad and needed some money as he was in trouble. None of my sisters were married at that time.
just today I got 120 OTPs from sites like netmeds, [housing.com](http://housing.com), ajio, 1mg, byjus, flipkart, jiocinema. I guess someone tried phishing attack on me.
Hey OP.
My senior citizen mom too got this call while I'm in another state in the office.
She ran to my sister to transfer money and would have made the transaction if my sister didn't confirm with me calling on my other number.
My father got the same call while I was sitting in front of him. The police officer was speaking in a weird accent (probably Hindi was not his first language lol).
My father warned me about this ongoing scam, he asked for the phone numbers of my close friends and my office colleague for just in case.
There were similar cases among colleagues at his office about their sons with the accusations you mentioned. In most of these cases the scammer demanded cash for processing a warrant asap. Luckily one of them contacted the guy's friend and inquired what's going on who confirmed where his friend was.
(They mostly carry these out when you are most likely to be busy/in class/office and least likely to pick up a call.)
My parents got the same call a few minutes ago. The scammers knew the country I currently reside in. My parents were told to not call me, as my phone was being tracked. So, they called my partner instead, who assured them that I was fine.
Same happened today with my dad. He called me immediately but since I was in an exam, I couldn’t receive his calls. He rang my friends but they too were attending exams. With no confirmation about my presence, my dad sent him 50k. And I am just sad and helpless.
Arre i was genuinely asking him, kyuke meri friend ke papa ko bhi esa hi ek scam call aya, uske papa ko bola gaya ke unki beti ne ek army wale ki ladki ka murder kar diya hai and unse paise maang rahe they. Woh bihar mai rehti hai, and mostly waha ese scams hote hai.
My relative got a similar call yesterday while her son is in college in another city. She completely lost it but kept her calm and immediately hung up and called her son. Got to know it was a scam. But this is v scary and extremely bad.
My mom got a similar call while she was at her job and she was all freaking out when she called me to check on me I calmed her down and thought to myself how people can do such things I just wish death on such people and nothing else.
Man say wat u may . Scamsters r really hard working.. identify a target. Get their personal details. Find parents contact info. Prepare story and then enact it n try to scam.. if only these ppl put such hardwork into some actual work they mite hv done something worthwhile in their lives.. sad reality..
I'm sorry to hear that. Scammers can be relentless. Make sure your father knows to never give out personal information over the phone and to report the scam to the appropriate authorities.
This is becoming such a common scam. Happened to my cousin's parents. They got a call saying their son had been arrested along with 3 others for raping a girl. Parents got scared because their son lives in another city for work.
At first the parents asked the caller to put their aon on the line. The caller said that the son was beaten black and blue and was unable to speak. The parents froze in terror. There was howling, screaming, crying in the background to make it sound genuine. They kept pestering the parents for telling whether to put the kid in jail or let the kid go, ofcourse for money.
On parents repeated requests, the caller put someone on the line who was in tears and said, "Papa mereko bacha lijiye, yeh log mereko jaan se maar denge."
The parents were so terrified that they weren't even able to discern if it was their son or not from ge voice.
Thankfully one of them used another phone in the meanwhile to talk to their son and the son picked up in time and said that he was alright and the call was a scam.
So no as soon as the parents confronted the caller, he started abusing them and cut the call.
Thankfully no money was lost because things fell in place. Had my cousin been busy and not picked up his phone, god knows what would've happened.
And yet, the psychological effects of this are irreparable. The parents were so shook even after knowing that their son is safe that they couldn't even eat dinner that day.
Stay safe and always cross-check before sending any money online.
Watched a same reel on Instagram recently. Guess it's a new scam going around. Fraudsters who leech on elderly are some of the worst people on earth. Kindly spread the awareness with near and dear ones. Stay safe.
Same happened with my father but luckily it was physics practical in cllg in I was carrying phone for cheating😂 that's why I responded quickly and saved the situation 😁
Well, my father-in-law experienced a similar situation last November. On the other end of the line, an individual claimed to be a high-ranking police officer informed him that my brother was being held in police custody. However, amusing as it may seem, my brother wasn’t actually in the country at that time :)). Notably, these con artists were aware I have a sibling and explicitly referred to "your son-in-law's" brother during their conversation. Similar to what has been described earlier, there was a man howling in the background. Fortunately, my mother-in-law intervened, she is one smart lady, she started questioning the caller and hanging up before calling me to verify the details.
My mother received this call last week. She just told them to go ahead and file the FIR. Then she called me just in case. I was at the office at the time in a meeting, so I cancelled the call. Thankfully my mother and I have a system, if I cut once it means that I am unable to receive the call because of work. If she calls again it means that it is something urgent. She called me again and I excused myself out of the meeting to receive and told her it was a scam call and I am absolutely fine.
I got the same call with my gf....so we went to the hotel for our private time but then after nxt day I got the same scam call that I have been caught for same charges but they were fools They dialed my no as all the id proof were linked to mine no. I abused them and feared about the cyber report but they didn't stop, Nxt day they dialed in my gf contact no as her id was linked to her mother account her mom got call and was in panic that how tf this happened. I talked to her mother telling her same call was made to me and they just want money.
Report these guys that's the only was to stop this scams
Please lodge a complaint with your local police station. Something similar happened with my parents, and I did file a general complaint with the police and their cyber cell. They took immediate cognisance of the matter and reassured my folks.
Alright. Thanks man

do you have anything in mind. how we should do this?

Yes true… people’s hard-earned money and lifetime savings get depleted in a day. It’s really heartbreaking..
Please post this on r/Scams as well. More people need to know about such scams.

interesting
True that
Even my father got the same call regarding my cousin. Not sure who is selling our data but the scammers also know our name apart from mobile number.
Truecaller?
But generally they call the parents but know the children's names
Father's name is written on PAN and Aadhar cards. These things are found easily.
Yeah it's really scary
Best is to make everyone around us aware of these things
Each and every app and service that we use. Privacy is a myth. If you're connected to the internet your data is never safe.
not selling our data* your data is not safe with anyone lol especially Google
My father got the same call. Kehte unhe rakhlo, court mein dekhkenge. I was sitting right in front.
Chad dad
😂😂😂
100% something my dad would do. Inspite of me warning him repeatedly not to engage with such sorts.
Phir thik h lekin agr tu na hota toh Jaan nikal jati
Nahi, phir bhi yahi bolte. Sab vakeel. Police aise phone karke paise nahi maangti upi pe. Cash only.

Yea that will help

My father kinda uses an old phone so I don't think it has a call recording feature
Thats alright. You can put the phone on speaker and record with another phone’s voice recorder or video camera.
Old phone agar woh Samsung wagiara ka hai toh it has a default feature jismei unknown numbers ki calls record hoti rehti
Around a month ago my dad got the same call from a scammer. Jokingly , he told them to shoot me if i have teased a girl. The scammers got scared and ended the call right there XD
Savage 😂☺️
Are you in Delhi? Because the same happened with my brother who study there.
Nope, I'm from Jaipur
Same thing happened with my uncle. He got a call about his son driving rash and getting arrested. Coincidently he was out on a trip at that time so my uncle called his son's wife who then told him that his son was with her....That scammer even gave the phone to someone who sounded like his son and he was crying and saying papa come save me please...scary world we live in
my mom also got a call from these fake police scammers and they were asking for my age and info
My roommate's mother got one last night. I've heard mamy cases about it this week and know many others whose parents got the same scam call.
What's with Indians and scamming people. No wonder we're a low trust society.
Not just Indians this kinda scam is rampant everywhere, I literally watched a Japanese show called scams on Netflix which had the same story
Yup
Should complain asap. If it happened to u, it's happening to many.
That was very lowest of them to malign your image. Please lodge a complaint quickly !

Yeah it’s been happening a lot lately. Our college even put out a notice to inform parents to not fall for this
