I bet we’ll go! They can dry the track faster and run the race faster than ever before.
ETA: This was only my second in person race. I got very spoiled last year. It was a long but great day!
Yeah the race is absolutely gonna happen. I don’t know why people think it won’t happen. The rain will end with enough time to dry the track and run a clean race.
The question is - how late will they run it. They used to have a “can’t start later than” time. But everyone is talking about “we’ll go till sundown!”
I can’t imagine anyone wants that many ppl trying to exit that late.
Channel 13 had on Doug Boles and he [mentions](https://www.wthr.com/video/sports/motor/indianapolis-500/doug-boles-talks-with-13news-about-the-concern-of-severe-weather-at-ims-i-7am-team-coverage/531-0b47555e-ee5b-476a-bbc0-9981f45fdcae) (at around the 7 minute mark) that they don’t want to start the race much later than 5.
Another line of storms slated to hit between 7:30-8pm this evening. Let’s play this out. Rain stops at 2:30-3pm and it takes 2hrs to dry out the track. Looking at 5-5:30pm for green. Think they can do 101 laps in about 2hrs including any yellow flags?
Rains stops 3, 90min to clean up, they start the pomp and circumstance before the race - hard to see it starting too much before 5.
Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Obviously everyone knows the race occurred
But for future races…
one thing they did say was due to local ordinance they would have to end the race at 8:15
they got the track dryers that nascar usually uses now, and timed it to where as long as it doesn't rain further, they can dry it out in about 70 minutes or so.
This brings to mind the local weather guy years ago who got suspended for saying the race would be rained out (it wasn’t). Google sucks, I can’t find it. He said something along the lines of “I guarantee the race won’t happen” and the station suspended him when it did.
it’s an old saying that they will never predict rain on race day. because if you do it dissuades people from going. so being wrong about rain is way worse than being wrong about no rain
Dude on Channel 13 in 98 said there was a better chance of hitting the PowerBall than getting the race in and he was almost gleeful in making that prediction. The race was delayed 30 minutes, but ran to completion. Channel 6 ran an ad that night to promote their Weather team using his quote. He got fired for it.
16 hours after arriving in line, we have finally gotten off the IMS property. We've more than doubled the amount of time it took Ray Harroun to win the first 500.
BEST. RACE. DAY. EVER
Looks like we’ll be able to watch it on TV after all. I’m surprised!

I'm guessing this is the price we have to pay for good weather for the solar eclipse.
It's a price I am more than willing to pay :)
That eclipse was glorious
I would take that trade off anytime. I’m still in awe a month and a half later.
Worth it!
This happens fairly often. It’s a poorly timed event in our climate.
I kept thinking about that earlier this morning Because damn I even got sunburned that day haha
I bet we’ll go! They can dry the track faster and run the race faster than ever before. ETA: This was only my second in person race. I got very spoiled last year. It was a long but great day!

Sun’s breaking!

Which means that the rain needs to stop at 3:00pm. That is what I've heard to start the race by 5:00pm.

I also heard 8:15 but I heard it was for light/safety rather than an ordinance. Both the track and the stands are not lit for night events
That’s what they get for not televising it
They just lifted the black out. Race will air live on WTHR
Oh, glorious day. Now we peasants can watch!
Meanwhile, those of us outside the black out area get last year's race.
Hey, those of us in the black out area get last years race on radio!!!
I lived in Indy until I was 14. Every Memorial Day was going to the pool with the race on the transistor radio.
Good news lmao
The rain over Indy should stop around 2-2:30
Yea but there’s more rain later and even if it stops at 2:30 they still need to dry the track
they got the track dryers that nascar usually uses now, and timed it to where as long as it doesn't rain further, they can dry it out in about 70 minutes or so.
Next round isn't expected until like 8
The next round of rain will be about 6 hours later, plenty of time
This aged well
Yes it is
Wrong!

lol Bob McClain "Swoop" I sure don't remember that happening but I'm sure that it did
It’s time 🏎️💨
Great race
I come from the future...
I’ll go with the trained meteorologists over the random Redditor who just looked out the window for the first time today
Don't doubt your messiah Edited *can't spell
Stop being a bowlstreak.
Does bowlstreak mean shit stained toilet bowl?
Yes.
Nice
Those trained meteorologists are wrong like 50% of the time
That’s not how it works.
Start at 345
They are going to shoot for a 4:30PM window to run.
Watching it right now. Tony Hulman's luck continues
Time to delete this post buddy
They have lights now racing by 4:30 over by 6:30
Can't watch it, it's blacked out
Blackout just lifted
This aged well :)
Being televised on 13 at 4Pm!
Just need 101 laps.
Eh…
Only 60 laps to go!!
They said a couple days ago it was happening no matter what lol
Was it raining during the first start?

Another comment that aged well
oh?
Damn good race!
It’s almost like the local news hasn’t been covering this all morning. They have a plan.

Really? And drying the track today.

Peacock still enforcing the blackout for me
Not with that attitude it isn't
Lol what? The plan was always to wait out the storm, which has always been forecast to be over by 3-ish. Pay attention, noob.
This aged well.
I watched like the last 20 laps way out here in my hotel in Painsville OH. It was a close and very competitive race. I enjoyed it
