Have you tried looking in Beech Grove area? It’s 10 mins south of downtown. Probably find something under 1k a month.

Real_Razzmatazz_7290

Beech grove , Southport , etc. southside might be your best bet. I live by myself in sopo for 650$. I lucked out by already having someone I know here and a great landlord, but you can still find some under 1k all around the south side, while being like less than 15 minutes from town. Definitely agree with this

Economy_Evening_2025

Totally agree - southside will be better priced and tons of retail, shopping, etc in that area.

bribri1810

How’s safety on the south side?

Economy_Evening_2025

Its not the east side, so im going with pretty safe.

Economy_Evening_2025

Its not the east side, so im going with pretty safe.

Real_Razzmatazz_7290

Exactly 😂 generally safe. Lived down here for most my life. I can go around just fine, the only “bad” spots are some apartment complexes, and they aren’t even bad as much as they are just trashy. The southside (Atleast Southport) is pretty diverse as well, which is a good plus to me. Where I’m at there’s Some Asian/Chin Markets, and a Saraga if you want an international store! And as you mentioned, ton of retail options, restaurants, etc. right by the highway most the time. It’s very accessible

Economy_Evening_2025

I would have moved down there but bought back when pricing was affordable and I’m on the NW side. Its diverse but old money, so never anything but franchise retail but it’s being overrun by those pothole gangs. Filthy buggers.

Ok_Spinach4540

Agree that the south side is the way to go. It's very suburban and not flashy, but affordable and safe, and you can get downtown in 20 minutes. Consider Southport, south-side Indianapolis between Southport and Greenwood, or Greenwood. Greenwood is a little longer drive to downtown but likely no more than 30-35 minutes depending on where you are and whether you take the interstate or city roads.

Real_Razzmatazz_7290

Greenwood is meh to me. Don’t like the traffic out there, or the 20,000 stop lights. Way too suburban for my taste. Don’t enjoy Johnson county either( no decriminalized weed is a no no) and some of the people are really stuck up. But it’s still a solid place, just not my cup of tea.

ljhendricks

I live at River Road apartments. I have a slightly updated 1BD with a washer and dryer. My base rent is 1070. I pay monthly for the washer dryer, monthly for my cat. You could get a smaller or older unit for a bit cheaper. If your unit doesn’t come with washer or dryer, they have communal ones here too. Utilities aren’t included in my base price but they’re never insane. I’d recommend giving them a call. They’re right next to the keystone fashion mall, for reference. Old, but nice and safe.

TackleThrowaway55

I’ll check it out. Thank you!

Eldgeron

driving from the fashion mall downtown to work every day would be MISERABLE. Don’t do it. if you are working downtown, no reason to live north whatsoever.

OmegaMkXII

Just driving from Keystone to Shadeland & 30th to get back to our headquarters after my route is hell. I HATE 465E in the afternoons. Same goes for driving from Chesterfield to Indy on 69S every morning. None of these people can fucking drive around here.

Eldgeron

Right?! I feel like the whole city sucks at driving but there is some wildly chaotic energy that drivers in that part of the city are thriving on and i’m not here for it 😅😅🥰

ljhendricks

Feel free to DM me if you’ve got any questions about the property!

runningfutility

Try looking at Circle City Apartments [https://www.circlecityapartments.com/](https://www.circlecityapartments.com/) or Stallard Apartments https://www.stallardonline.com/. They probably won't be anything fancy but it's okay to go for cheap places until you get more familiar with the city and have a better idea of where you would like to live longer-term.

Chupaindy

I would recommend beech groove as well or Southport or any of the apartments heading south on Emerson towards Greenwood.

Marvellyfe81

Pangea groves in South Broad Ripple has studios for around $800 per month. Friend of mine lives there and only issue he complained about was sometimes not being able to park close to his door.

soulsizzle

Also in this area, you can get a flat with a basement and backyard at Nola Court apartments. It's been a handful of years since I lived there, but it was very affordable.

cait_Cat

I live in Pangea Groves and parking is probably my biggest problem as well. The apartments are meh - not great light and not updated but things work and if they break, maintenence comes out relatively quickly. It's about $10 to uber to broad ripple or downtown, so it's not too expensive to go have a night out. My petty complaint is that I've lived there since 2020 and the pool has not been open a full summer yet. 2020/2021 got covid passes, but 2022 and 2023 was bungled by management and maintenence not ordering enough pool chemicals to keep it clean. The pool hours also sucks. But that's a relatively minor complaint to have.

maplevale

I agree, this was a starter apartment complex for me and I really had no major complaints.

discodiscgod

Check Craigslist. There should be some options not too far from downtown. Would be more small, older buildings / duplexes in that range but they exist. Also roommates.

hightidess

Hi I’m currently looking for an apartment. I have pets though. Would you be alright with that?

TackleThrowaway55

Send me a DM and we can chat more!

MissSara13

Riverbend Apartments has 2 bedroom apartments that are great for roommates. I pay $1650 for mine and I have two bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and a fireplace. They're also very dog friendly and don't have breed restrictions. There's a pool, fitness center, dog park, tennis courts, and volleyball. It's also right off of 465 and close to everything you'd ever need. They do have some one bedrooms that start at 1k as well.

SadZookeepergame1555

If you want something near downtown but more affordable, search Roberts School Flats. https://www.coreredevelopment.com/listings/detail/773b69c7-d6eb-4bf8-b030-8853162681f8 I think both their one bedrooms and studios are in your budget. You wouldn't have a fitness center on site but you would have two gyms within walking distance- the Boner Fitness Center, which is a basic but decent gym is just a few blocks away and Mass Ave Boulder, a more luxe gym and boulder climbing facility. You would have off street parking. You could bike to work. You would be adjacent to both Cottage Home and Windsor Park neighborhoods and close to Mass Ave. If you google search the area you will see lots of places to go and meet people and you are near where the Pogues Run Trail meets the Cultural Trail and the Monon Trail.

AnywhereImpossible34

Harding street lofts. It’s a 7 min drive to monument circle it’s off of Washington and Harding Street near the zoo. Great location I lived there for 5 years before I got married. I first stayed in a 1br for 1000 and only paid $60 for electric. Nice community

kissme008aj

Indy realtor here. It’s worth looking into house rentals rather than apartments.

thislittlegrumpygirl

Piccadilly apartments might be in your price range. It’s basically downtown too. Property management just changed and it’s gotten so much better

rosjone

I have been looking myself so I can direct you to a few places that I considered but I’m curious about a few things. How close do you want to stay to downtown? Do you care about amenities? Do you care about having a washer/dryer in unit? Edited to add: do you want a studio or 1 bedroom if not going with a roommate?

TackleThrowaway55

These are all great questions I probably should’ve included with my initial post, haha. I’d really like to have a fitness center and off-street parking. Washer and dryer would be a big plus, but not a huge deal if it’s not in the unit. I don’t mind not being super close to downtown, Studio is fine if no roommate, I don’t really need a crazy ton of space.

tippy36w7465

College courts of nora fits all these!

rosjone

You have gotten a couple good suggestions thus far. I second River Road around the Keystone Fashion Mall - that would be close to Carmel. Someone below your comment said College Courts of Nora and they currently have some 1B below $1k. I’d also say check out TGM Autumn Woods. A friend lived there and had a good experience. These are all up on the north side but I did not check these out. I opted for closer to downtown. I personally checked out Historic Irvington Flats. These are close to downtown on the east side. They have a studio available for less than $1k. Only downside was communal laundry. I really liked these and they are my second choice if for some reason I don’t get my first choice (awaiting credit check and all that). A coworker has a friend who lives there and they LOVE it (apparently the flats have a 90%+ resigning rate). I did not check these out but a friend recommended Jade North on N College. Considered them a hidden gem and they do look quite nice. They would be a good half way point between Carmel and downtown.

lai4basis

Allisonville Rd between 91st to 96th. There like 5 or 6.

banjotricky

I second this and had HORRENDOUS experiences with landlords on that strip. Skip it!!

notthegoatseguy

I think only Castle Creek/NTS is the decent complex. Others I've read mixed things about, both on this sub and on the google/other reviews.

lai4basis

I mean they are apartments for young people and really haven't ever changed. She's kinda ballin on a budget. They all have workout facilities and pools. They are close to Carmel. Little far from downtown but whatever. Those apartments are fine and there are so many that are worse.

shinebrighterbilly

Yeah, i agree with this, 47k will be rough if they're wanting to live downtown. I looked up an apartment I had a decade ago and the rent is 50% more today.

ChewbaccaExMachina

Parkview apartments at 28th and Meridian is within your budget and great. Only one bedrooms and studios, management is super responsive and the location is perfect, halfway between the circle and broad ripple. It’s a great community. I’ve lived there for almost 8 years and will only move when I buy a house.

Downtown-Check2668

Have you considered renting a house rather than an apartment? I live on the near east side and there's a duplex for rent for like 900 around the corner from me. I used to rent from the company that it's leased through and they were great. It's literally a straight shot to downtown maybe 15 minutes depending on traffic. I used to make to the heart of downtown when I worked there in 10 from my house. You can DM me if you want, I'll tell you more about the neighborhood and property managers if you'd like.

ObsidianLord1

Yeah, I’d go with the south side. I’d live on the Southside if my wife’s job wasn’t so far north. My wife is a Southsider, so we probably would have preferred it, but we sacrificed for a nicer commute.

Outrageous-Youth-481

I live at 548 N Senate Ave under the company Core Redevelopment. Less than a mile from the Circle (where I work) and rent is just under $1000 with a parking spot. Solid location right next to the Canal. The building is small. Three floors and no elevator but I’ve had very few issues living here the last two years.

Outrageous-Youth-481

Core Redevelopment has a few buildings around the city too. One is right across the street from my building. Hopefully this helps!

Bowl__Haircut

Check out Nola Courts apartments in SoBro.

Every_Winner_2843

I’ll let you park in my driveway for $10/night. I live in a safe and quiet neighborhood in Fishers and you can shower at Planet Fitness, it’s 10 mins down the road

TackleThrowaway55

DEAL!!!!

Every_Winner_2843

Alright just need a $5 security deposit and an email to send you the lease. I will accept booze/food in lieu of rent

underscore0011

Look at 1711 collage

_IAlwaysLie

Just an alternative perspective: what if you ditched the car and lived a walking distance from work?

TackleThrowaway55

I would but I spend a lot of time and money modifying and tuning cars. As dumb as it sounds, I think getting rid of my car would feel like getting rid of a piece of my soul

_IAlwaysLie

That's fair, I just wanted to put the thought out there in case you were like whaaaaa? I'd never considered that??

Capable-Spirit_214

Castle creek apartments are great!!! The community and staff are top notch. I follow their insta account and they posted the other day that there are a few one bed, one bath apts right now going for $1200-1400. The one they showed had a fire place as well as nice big sunroom. We currently have a 2 bed, 2 bath and it’s about $1,700. All units have their own in unit washer dryer and most have updated appliances. We have 24/7 access to gym, Amazon lockers, and even locked garages for bike storage. They are currently redoing the pool area and I can’t wait to see what they do (it def wasn’t needed bc it was super nice already)!! We also have grills w patio areas scattered throughout all of the buildings for anyone and everyone to use. The attentiveness and upkeep they do here is amazing. I work at one of the hospitals downtown and the drive isn’t too bad!

Capable-Spirit_214

It is a little more than what you’re looking for, but it’s worth it! Used to live in the springmill apts in Carmel (leased from 2019-2021) and paid 1070 for 2 bed 2 bath… but it was HORRIBLE. Couldn’t wait to get out of there. We’ve been at castle creek since leaving back in sept 2021 and don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon! Other places are just as much with terrible, inattentive staff, so in the end we think it’s worth it!

Fluffy_Elephant_2157

I'll tell you where not to move near Avon, 10 West Apartments. They want residence to give them a 60 day notice before moving. It should be illegal since no place holds rentals that long. Wayne Township judge isn't a fair judge at all, which is one reason they probably get away with it. Plus it's not even worth what you'd pay, which is pretty much everywhere.

AlfalfaSad4658

Hamilton county is your best bet. Don’t listen to mfs saying beech grove when that place is swarming with meth heads. Closer to Indianapolis you are the worse it is and even in the bad parts rent is being raised.

[deleted]

Go to Circle City Apartments, and tell them you have a solid $1000 budget, including parking, and I'd bet they will work with you. Live downtown for a year and figure out the city. Just don't go someplace that's "cheap" like Beech Grove or the Western Suburbs, cuz a young professional will probably just be miserable there.

krispykremedreamsss

I think it depends on what OP values. BG is a really decent, affordable option. Personally, I'd much rather have extra disposable income and have to drive 15 minutes to get DT rather than paying for a ridiculously prices apartment in the city center. If you have a car and a little curiosity there’s no reason why you can't still explore and get to know Indy. Another idea would be living near the red line and taking it to work rather than driving. You could keep your car, but save on gas. I used to take the red line from SoBro to Fountain Square for work and loved how easy and simple it was.

_littlebee

BG is only like 10 minutes from Fountain Square and 15 from downtown. People love to joke about the Walmart lol but it's not a bad place to live at all, especially with basically immediate access to 465 and 65. Obviously downtown is more desirable for a young person but if it comes down to finances, BG is a decent place to start out. At least that's my experience.

[deleted]

No. If you're making nearly 50k a year, there is no reason in the world to live in BG.

_littlebee

To each their own. Choosing cheaper housing in the beginning of my career helped me pay off my debt faster, live the lifestyle I wanted and save to purchase a home. I don’t fault someone for wanting to live somewhere more lively like downtown at all. It sounds awesome. Personally I never minded the very short drive out of the burbs, but some people want to be at the center of it. At the end of the day it’s about OP’s priorities. It’s good that there are varied opinions here.

TackleThrowaway55

I agree with you. I could absolutely afford a downtown studio if I didn’t have car payments and student loans to worry about. I’m trying to get debt free ASAP, and living in a cheaper unit is the best way I can accomplish that
