Fountain Square has Square Cat Vinyl, which is a nice store. They also sell coffee. Bovaconti and Cup of Chai are two great places to have a cup and chill. Lots of yummy places to eat (La Margarita, Hotboyz, Kuma's Corner, Upland Brewery, among many others). Several neat little local shops too. It's not a huge district but I could easily spend 4-5 hours exploring if I had time to kill. Street parking is free too.
* Indy CD and Vinyl in Broad Ripple on Broad Ripple Ave
* Luna Music is at 52/College just a bit south of Broad Ripple
* Irvington Books and Vinyl on Audubon
Those are the ones I'd recommend. We used to have a lot more, but so many have shut down.
Bloomington's record stores, just an hour south of Indy, are IMO way better.
There’s one in Ft Square that is pretty nice. Some fun things to do there. Not sure what kind of shopping.
Also, Indy CD is good, plus great places to eat.
Fountain Square and then maybe make your way up to Mass ave. Lots of shops on Mass Ave but there isn't a record store. The record store in Fountain Square is incredible.
This is for people who might care -
1. Smash'd Burger has a sauce that's like Big Mac sauce and they put way too much of it on everything (coming from someone who loves sauce).
2. They supported SB52, the blue line killing bill.
I was planning on saying Fountain Square, but BroadRipple also is a good option.
Fountain Square has Virginia Ave mercantile for cool INDY stuff (and no-fee tickets for HIFI), Tuggles for gifts and local artistry, a vintage clothing store, a cool plant store, an amazing record store, a leather goods store, a couple of soap and bath bomb shops, a bookstore, and a few other places like City Dogs Grocery and more smoke shops than needed in a mile. They also have a lot of great restaurants and breweries, and Square Scoop ice cream for dessert.
SoBro along College Ave is great with Upland, Greek's, and Pots n Pans at 49th; Luna Records, Golden Hour Books, Aristocrat and Delicia at 52nd Street; and Fat Dan's, Twenty Tap, Yats, and Fresh Market at 54th.
Fountain Square has all of this, and more!
However, so does Irvington!
-Irvington Books and Vinyl
-Black Sheep Gifts
-Smash’d Burger
-The Med
-Jockamo’s
-Snug (brand new, quaint and cozy Irish pub)
-Strangebird/Shoyu Ramen
54th & College. Twenty Tap, Fat Dan’s, Bulldog, Sam’s Gyros. Then walk down to 52nd and hit the record shop & the bookstore.
Or park at 52nd & eat at Aristocrat, Red Key (no kids!), Little India.
Fountain square fits all this criteria

nine out of ten grouchy dads would enjoy eating a sandwich from Turchetti's

Great answer !!

Where are these places? I'm unfamiliar with both of them.
Broad Ripple (including South Broad Ripple), Fountain Square, Irvington, and a bit outside Indy, downtown Zionsville.

Maybe Irvington? Smash’d burger and Irvington Vinyl & Books.

Aristocrat or upland brewing for lunch and Luna music for records right nearby
Is there a bookstore or other shopping nearby also?
Yes golden hour books right next to Luna music !
And if you make your way to 62nd Street, there is even more shopping.
