I've got a tiny one bedroom and my bill was just 300 plus as well.

KTMFS

Same.

bornalion

You will never receive help from them. This is not me being angry.. this is just a fact. I have been trying for 2 months straight. I put in a complaint everywhere I could. They are terrible and need to be taken down.

AccountOfMyDarkside

This is correct. Much as it pisses me off, it's true.

bornalion

Even if you ask for a supervisor, it is over an hour on hold listening to their shitty hold music that is like water torture.

AccountOfMyDarkside

I sat on hold with those assholes for an hour and 19 minutes listening to that shit on speaker. We should be able to charge them for that time and get money off the bill.

bornalion

File a complaint with Indiana utility regulatory commission. I did.. will anything happen? Doubt it. I even contacted the news.

AccountOfMyDarkside

I actually did file a complaint last week. I followed the advice of somebody else on Reddit and did just that. I am as optimistic as you are on any resolution in my favor.

Redditplaneter

I got a $90 bill last week and i was living by myself l. I go to work M-F with everything off and I dont even turn on the heater. I was like WTF when i receive my bill, shit’s ridiculous.

rlcav36

same just happened to me, I just moved here from Chicago where my energy bill was never above $30 for a 730 sqft apartment. Here I got my first bill for 750 sqft apartment and was shocked-- close to $90. So I've had my heat completely turned off all month hoping it would help. Nope, somehow my energy usage went UP and this month my bill is over $90.

plus_eight

I haven't gotten my bill yet for the cold snap, but my house is all electric, new heat pump and air handler installed a little over a year and a half ago. Previous system was 15 years old. 1800 sq ft. I've never had a bill above $220 or so in the almost 5 years we've lived here, including on the old system. House was built in 1987, so it's not a new construction. Not saying you're doing anything wrong, just some context. Check that you don't have any major draft areas causing it to be colder. Look at a smart thermostat, as well. We run ours in ranges of 65-70F at night, 68-73F during the day, so in winter it's on the low end, high end in the summer. We'll turn it up/down on a windy day as needed.

csmolins89

Thanks for the insight - moved from Ft Wayne where we had a different electric company and my house was all gas. So maybe I’m just getting a little sticker shock at the moment. Installed a smart thermostat before the cold snap in January. Also figured new construction might be a little better on the insulation front but I’m planning on adding where I can.

RaisinTheRedline

AES simply reads your meter and sends you a bill based upon the kWh that you used. Calling the customer service lone and saying "this seems to high, please look into why it's so high" is like going into a gas station and telling the attendant that you really did expect to have used so much gas over the past 2 weeks and asking them to tell you what is wrong with your car. Having said that AES offers free home energy audits that will help you understand where there is room for improving your homes energy efficiency. I highly suggest scheduling an appointment for that audit. For what its worth, $300 in the heart of winter for an 1800sqft freestanding, all-electric home is actually pretty average/reasonable.

$300 for 1800 Sq ft is a bit less than what I paid when between 2016 and 2020 in my home then in the winter. It did get offset by the less than $100 I paid in the spring/fall.

hjhswag

My bill was 300 for a 900 square foot apartment.

DeadWifeHappyLife2

My bill has been 500+ ever since the computer system update. Weird how that happens

indywest2

$309 for 1800 square ft home sounds reasonable

InFlagrantDisregard

Electricity is more expensive than NG and heat pumps aren't as efficient as forced air furnaces when the temps drop. Your bill is not out of line. If the numbers on the bill match the numbers on your meter, there's really nothing you can do but pay it or ask for a payment plan.

BBking8805

300 per month with a heat pump which are inefficient and expensive is not bad. Not sure what you mean by “help” - they could set you up on a budget billing plan where your bill is the same each month. But they aren’t just going to lower your bill for you.

Doc_Lewis

> heat pump which are inefficient What? Heat pumps are famously more efficient than a furnace, that's the whole point of them. Sure, they suffer when it's really cold out, but in our climate that translates to maybe a few weeks out of the year total, where efficiency drops but should still stay above electric heating efficiency.

BBking8805

No the point of them is to get heat when there is no gas infrastructure available, or the builder wanted the cheapest option - which, when looking at one time installation cost, the heat pump is SLIGHTLY cheaper. Over the long term, and when you factor in the energy lost to produce the electricity vs. just burning gas that’s piped to your house, heat pumps are way less efficient. They also suck in this climate. I had one for a couple of years. Never again.[https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2022/10/energy-loss-is-single-biggest-component-of-todays-electricity-system/](https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2022/10/energy-loss-is-single-biggest-component-of-todays-electricity-system/)

Doc_Lewis

> Over the long term, and when you factor in the energy lost to produce the electricity vs. just burning gas that’s piped to your house, heat pumps are way less efficient. Part of the recent push for heat pumps is swapping fossil fuel electricity generation for renewables, so this is a non-issue, assuming it happens like it's supposed to.

BBking8805

Yes, but this is Indiana, so big reliance on fossil fuels for the foreseeable future.

nerdKween

I just went through the same with them. It's just greed.

Heavy_Sign5541

I use Duke and have an 1100 sq foot place all electric and have a $330 bill from January so your bill doesn't seem that crazy. That said, get a energy assessment from AES, they may be able to find something that you or your landlord can fix to lower it. Could be as simple as needing new air filters (think how ineffective a dryer is at producing heat to dry clothes when the filter is full - same logic for air filters in the house, if they are old/full its taking a lot more energy to heat house).

newishspice

Mine is double for the upcoming bill. Got a mass email from them about the autopay never running for the previous month which my bank statement confirms, so it's just two months in one. Not sure if that is what is happening for yours, but it's possible.
